SMU Student Travel
Eligibility
All undergraduates (UGs), Postgraduates (PGPs & PGRs) & Non-Graduating (NGs) students on
official travels sanctioned by the SMU.
Scope of Coverage
Provides 24 hours cover whilst on authorised school trip, including personal deviation before or after
an authorised trip (max. 60 cumulative days)

Emergency Medical Evacuation
If the insured member is in a critical medical condition whilst overseas and in the opinion of
an authorized representative of ISOS, it is judged medically appropriate to move the
insured member to another location for medical treatment or return the insured member to
his country of residence

Repatriation Expenses
If the insured member died whilst overseas, an authorized representative of ISOS, shall
make the necessary arrangement for the return of the insured member’s mortal remains to
his city of residence or usual place of residence.

Post Journey Medical Expenses
If the insured member sustains bodily injury or sickness and seek medical treatment whilst
overseas, extend to include the follow up treatment back in country of residence within 60
days after the end of the journey.
If the insured member sustains bodily injury or sickness and does not seek medical
treatment overseas, the insured member must first seek medical treatment in his country
of residence within 7 days upon return to his country of residence and subsequent medical
treatments are covered up to a maximum of 60 days after the end of the journey.

Trip Cancellation
Cover the expenses (unrecoverable expenses, for charges, deposits, payment or advance
payments for travel or accommodation charges which have not been or will not be used) If
insured member is forced to cancel any part of a planned journey prior to the
commencement of the journey as the direct and necessary result of any specified cause
occurring within 30 days prior to the commencement of the planned journey.

Trip Curtailment and Rearrangement
Cover the expenses (unrecoverable expenses, for charges, deposits, payment or advance
payments for travel or accommodation charges which have not been or will not be used) if
the insured member is forced to curtail or alter the itinerary of any part of a planned
journey during the course of that journey, as the direct and necessary result of any
specified cause.
Rearrangement expenses mean all reasonable travel and accommodation expenses
incurred in transporting the insured member back to the point at which the journey was
curtailed to complete the journey where it is commercially reasonable to so o provided that
such expenses do not include first class or business class airfares.

Travel Postponement
If a journey is postponed due to serious injury or sickness, death of a closed relative,
unexpected strike, riot or civil commotion, terrorism, adverse weather or natural
catastrophe, subpoena or jury service occurring within 30 days before the departure of the
journey.

Cover loss of money due to robbery, burglary, theft or threat of violence.
Cover financial loss as a direct result of a credit, charge or bakers card being lost or stolen
and being subsequently used fraudulently by any person other than the insured person.

Travel Delay
If the departure of the public conveyance in which the insured person has arranged to
travel is delayed for more than 6 hours due to event leading to airspace or airport closure,
strike or industrial action, civil commotion, terrorism, adverse weather or natural
catastrophe, mechanical breakdown / derangement of the public conveyance (excluding
taxi), bomb threat, grounding of a public conveyance as a result of mechanical or
structure defects, discovery of a suspicious object as declared by the relevant authorities.
$200 per every 6 hourly

Baggage Delay
If the insured member’s check-in baggage is delayed due to misdirection in delivery for
more than 6 hours, a sum of $200 will be paid out for every 6 hourly.

as compensation in respect of death or harm, accidental property damage as a result of

Emergency Travel Expenses
If the insured member is confined for more than 5 consecutive days in a hospital and no
adult member of his family is with him, CHUBB will indemnify a reasonable travel and
accommodation expenses necessarily incurred by 2 relatives or friends of the insured
person to visit and stay with him, until the insured member is medically fit to return to his
country of residence

Travel Misconnection
If insured member misses a connecting flight due to late arrival of the incoming flight or any
event leading to airspace or airport closure and no alternative transportation is made
available by the Public Conveyance, CHUBB will pay $200 for every 6 hours of delay.

Overbooked Flight
If an insured member is denied boarding on a confirmed flight due to overbooking and no
alternative transportation is made available by the Public Conveyance to the insured
member, CHUBB will pay $200 to the insured member.

Emergency Mobile Phone Charges
If the insured member needs to contact iSOS for assistance in an emergency situation,
CHUBB will indemnify the mobile phone charges incurred to contact CHUBB Assistance up
to $200.

General Exclusions
This policy does not cover or indemnify any amount, directly or indirectly, caused by, as a consequence of, in
connection with or is contributed to by any of the following:
1. Declared or undeclared War or any act of War, foreign invasion, Civil War, rebellion, revolution or insurrection.
2. Any intentional self-injury, suicide, reckless misconduct or any illegal or criminal act committed by the insured
member.
3. The insured member undertaking any journey against the advice of a Physician or for the purpose of seeking
medical attention.
4. Any pre-existing condition unless the insured person has been insured continuously under any group or corporate
hospital and surgical insurance policy (excluding individual medical schemes paid by using Medisave Account
under the Central Provident Fund or in partial payment made in cash by the insured member) for at least 12
months immediately prior to the date that the insured member is added to the Policy If at any point after this 12
months period, the insured member changes his employer, this exclusion shall not apply so long as the date that
this insured member is added into the policy occurs within 30 date of the termination of his previous employment.

General Exclusions
5. Training for and/or participating in professional sport of any kind;
6. The Insured member engaging in testing of any kind of conveyance; works onboard docked or sailing vessels,
offshore oil rigs and offshore platform or mining; handling of explosives or diving activities.
7. Any congenital anomalies.
8. Any loss or damage which could have been avoided by the exercise of reasonable care by the insured member.
9. Any condition which results from or is a complication of pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage (except Accidental
Miscarriage not attributed to any natural causes and/or sickness) or abortion, intoxication by alcohol, or drugs not
prescribed by a physician.
10. Cosmetic surgery, dental treatment and other elective treatments.

Guideline For Claims
Immediately report to the relevant parties or authorities (such as police, airlines, travel agent, hotel) and obtain written
confirmation of the loss or damage sustained.
Retain all relevant information / documents (such as police report, airline’s irregularity or loss or damage / flight or
baggage delay report, medical reports, original detailed bills / receipts), damaged items and photographs as well as
witnesses’ particulars (if any) to substantiate your claim.
Promptly notify all loss or damage to CHUBB Claims Representative. In any event, written notice must be given within
30 days after the occurrence or loss. To ensure prompt processing of your claim, please submit a completed claim
form together with the supporting documentation as soon as possible. If in doubt, please contact the hotline.
To enable claims to be dealt with promptly, the claimant is advised to submit all available supporting documents which
are summarized below, without delay. Any documents required that are missing when completing the claim form can
be submitted at a later date when the documents are available.
Please retain a copy of all materials for your records and submit all claims with supporting documents to CHUBB. You
will be contacted if additional information or documentation is required.

✓ Duty Schedule (not required if payment is made to Named Insured i.e. Employer)
✓ If married with child / children, certified copy of marriage certificate and birth certificate of each dependant
child as defined in the policy in respect of Family Security Benefit (if applicable).
✓ Documentary Proof of the Commencement Date of Employment and confirming that
✓ the Deceased was a student of the Policyholder prior to the time of death (e.g. Certified True Copy of Pay
Slip).
✓ If death occurred overseas, please attach burial / cremation documentation and letter from Immigration &
Checkpoints Authority (ICA) confirming the invalidation of Deceased’s
✓ Singapore NRIC / Passport.
✓ Documents must be authenticated
✓ by either of the following:
➢ Singapore Embassy in the country of death;
➢ Singapore Consulate; or

Loss of Personal Money and Travel Documents✓ Original bills / receipts for replacement of personal documents
✓ A copy of the police report
✓ Any document (such as ATM withdrawal slips, money exchange receipts) to substantiate loss of cash.
✓ The loss or damage must be reported to the police or relevant authority having jurisdiction where the loss or
damage occurred, within twenty-four (24) hours from the incident.
Loss or Damage to Personal Baggage / Property✓ Original purchase bills / receipts for lost or damaged property
✓ Photographs of damaged items and the original repair bills / receipts
✓ Copy of the police report
✓ If loss occurred in the custody of the airline or airport:
➢ Property Irregularity Report from the airline, and
➢ Written confirmation from the airline on any compensation payable or paid
✓ The loss or damage must be reported to the police or relevant authority having jurisdiction where the loss or
damage occurred, within twenty-four (24) hours from the incident.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1. Am I covered on the way to and from the airport in Singapore?
Ans : Yes, you are covered when you leave the place of residence and on the way to the airport or 3 hours before the
schedule departure time, whichever is later. The cover will terminate when you return directly to the place of
residence or 3 hours after the scheduled arrival time, whichever is earlier.
Q2. What is the duration of each trip?
Ans: 183 consecutive days (including personal deviation)
Q3. What is personal deviation?
Ans: Personal deviation means personal vacation taken by an insured member immediately before, during or
immediately after an authorized trip and within the applicable territorial limits that the insured member is
covered, up to a maximum cumulative of 60 days.
Q4. Which country is not covered under the travel program?
Ans: Country on war, as well as sanction countries (Iran, Syria, Cuba, North Korea, North Sudan and Crimea)
Q5. What is the timeframe for me to submit claims?
Ans: Standard practice is within 30 days.

Q6. If I am overseas for more than 6 months, can I submit the claims?
Ans: Yes, you may submit the claims via the CHUBB claim portal first even the amount is more than $1,000 and submit
the hardcopy once returned to Singapore.
Q7. If my medical report is in foreign language, can I submit the document?
Ans: Yes. CHUBB may reserves the right to request for an English translated document.
Q8. If required to translate the language, can I request the university overseas to assist and can CHUBB
accept?

Q9. Can I purchase additional cover?

Q10. How does CHUBB reimburse me if I do not have a local bank account?
Ans: CHUBB will T/T the payment to your overseas bank account. All the bank charges to facilitate this fund transfer
are not covered under the policy.
Q11. If I have submitted a claim and while processing, I have returned to my home country, can CHUBB T/T the
payment to my account?
Ans: Yes. All the bank charges to facilitate this payment are not covered under the policyPg 18

Q12. I am pregnant. Wil I be covered while I am overseas.
Ans: No, the policy does not cover any pregnancy related issues (except accidental miscarriage not attributed to any
natural causes and/or sickness).
Q13. Is dental treatment covered while I am overseas?
Ans: No, dental treatment is not covered except for accidental injury ( Dental charges to restore sound and natural
teeth resulting from an accident).
Q14. What is “Specified Cause”?
Ans: Specified Cause means any of the followings:
a. Insured member’s death, or bodily injury or sickness sustained by him and rendering him unfit to travel in the
opinion of a physician.
b. Death of a closed relative or bodily injury or sickness necessitating him to be confined to a hospital.
c. Compulsory quarantine, jury service, subpoena, or hijack.
d. Unexpected Strike, Riot or Civil Commotions, Terrorism, adverse weather or Natural Catastrophe arising out
of circumstances beyond the control of the insured member.
e. The insured member’s residence or country od residence becoming uninhabitable resulting from fire, storm,
flood, theft, subsidence or malicious damage.
Q15. Are Act of Terrorism covered?
Ans: Yes, this policy is extended to cover terrorism ( including Nuclear, Chemical or Biological Terrorism)Pg 19
