A new watershed ethic is taking root here in Grand Lake and it’s focused on our outstanding waterways. “Outstanding Grand Lake” is a grassroots movement toward sustainable community development, marketing, and education, emphasizing our unique relationship with Colorado’s largest natural lake and neighboring waters. The “Outstanding” concept grew out

of a local Rotary effort to refurbish the Information Kiosk in Grand Lake Town Park. Working with Town Trustees and the Chamber of Commerce, local Rotarians are repurposing the old Rocky Mountain Repertory ticket booth in Town Park into a family-friendly Trailhead Hub to guide visitors around town and beyond into Rocky Mountain National Park, Arapaho National Recreation Area, and Grand Lake Metro Recreation District. During early project scoping, a visiting preschool teacher suggested artistic, knee-high panels with a watershed theme inside the kiosk, so that younger kids can learn as well. Involving youngsters is a key element of the Outstanding Grand Lake outreach. The Grand Lake Rotary Kiosk will showcase the aquatic world kids might encounter when hiking in the area with their families–like fish and otter in the lake, dragonflies and frogs in the marshy shore, voles and songbirds in the riparian woodland. Educating Grand Lake’s youngest

visitors fits well with family-friendly summer events, including our Duck Derby Ducky Races, Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast and Parade, Buffalo

Barbeque, Spirit of the Lake Regatta, and Constitution Week. It also opens doors to new partnerships in “Citizen Science” with Shadowcliff, headquartered in Grand Lake, offering workshops in watershed sustainability, along with Infinite West, a local group focused on better stewardship of natural resources through connected collaboration and education for sustainable healthy communities, economies, and environment. Grand County Water Information

Network (GCWIN), also headquartered here in Grand Lake, promotes outdoor

watershed education, including the popular Watershed Week where local students get outside to perform real scientific measurements including “bug counts” that monitor local stream health. Rotary has worked with GCWIN to bring a water-quality perspective to the internationally popular Geocaching sites in the area. We’re looking at how me might set up a local water-quality testing lab to help USEPA, the US Bureau

of Reclamation, and our own Three Lakes Watershed Association monitor water quality while bringing technical jobs to the community. Working together, Outstanding Grand

Lake aims to cultivate a forward-thinking ethic of watershed sustainability through fun activities, workshops, and real community engagement that includes visitors of all ages in shaping the future of our Colorado River Headwaters, starting right here in Grand Lake. www.outstandinggrandlake.org.

BEAUTIFUL LAKE TOWN

Grand Lake has cobalt blue skies, the largest natural body of water in Colorado, and 12,007ft Mount Baldy as

a backdrop. With all of that, plus the snowcapped Never Summer Range, you can see why the travel writer for World Property Journal ranked the town of Grand Lake number one in the “Authentic” Small Town List. To quote the Journal: “… this town has wood-planked sidewalks, funky Western restaurants, friendly folks with wide smiles and cowboy hats, fresh mountain air, craftspeople in colorful old studios, quaint bookshops and galleries, first-class live theater.”Grand Lake is one of Colorado’s oldest

resorts. Never a big mining or ski town, the town of Grand Lake began as a supply center in 1879 when gold and silver were discovered nearby in the Colorado River. The amounts of gold and silver were small and Grand Lake survived by becoming a lakeside resort in the early 1880s. What gold and silver couldn’t do, the motor vehicle did. Although a two-day drive from Denver, this area attracted families who built summer homes along the shores of the lake as early as 1902. Many of the homes around the lake have been in the same family for generations.Walking on the wooden boardwalks and

browsing in the unique downtown shops and restaurants, you will experience a warm, friendly, small-town feeling. Beaches, footpaths, parks, and picnic areas are snuggled along the lake shoreline.

THE HEART OF SOMETHING GRANDGranby was once a tiny ranching and

farming community that has become a destination for both vacationers and second homeowners. Centrally located between Winter Park and Grand Lake, at the intersection of the county’s two main highways, US Hwy 40 and US Hwy 34, Granby has become a popular spot for the many activities in Grand County.Granby is best known for its family-

friendly atmosphere. A designated “Colorado Main Street”, cute retail shops dot the town and a variety of lodging is available from quaint motels to lodge rooms on the lake.Granby is accessible by

Amtrak train, and has it’s own airport.

Timber Creek CampgroundSituated along the Colorado River in the Kawuneeche Valley eight miles north of the

park entrance, the campground (8,900ft) has 98 sites, all on a first-come, first-served basis. $26/night while the water is turned on late-May through mid-September; $18/night when the water is turned off. Cash or credit card. Ranger-led campfire programs in the amphitheater at Timber Creek during the summer. Tent camping as well as RV and trailer sites are available.

Activities in the ParkThe park offers more than 350 miles of hiking trails, from leisurely strolls to technical

climbing and hardcore backpacking options. For the adventuresome trout angler, the park has 147 lakes, many with fish. Pick up a brochure listing lakes with fish and park regulations at the visitor center.Bicycles are permitted on Trail Ridge Road; however, there is very little shoulder and,

with steep drop-offs, it is not for the novice cyclist. Guided horseback trail tours are available on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park and leave from the stables in Grand Lake.Ranger-led activities and nature programs are offered at each of the park’s visitor centers,

including Kawuneeche Visitor Center on the west side of the park near Grand Lake.Kawuneeche Visitor Center (kah-wu-NEE-chee, Arapaho for “valley of the coyote”) is

one mile north of the village of Grand Lake on US Hwy 34 at the entrance to the park. Open daily year-round. Summer 8am-6pm, winter 8am-4:30pm. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. List of all ranger talks and walks available at the visitor center.Warm Tip: The alpine tundra is windy and 20-30 degrees colder than Grand Lake. Bring

a warm jacket, sweatshirt, and sweater. The weather can change in a moment at this elevation.Every Kid in a Park Pass gives all kids in the fourth grade free access to Rocky

Mountain National Park. The pass is valid for the duration of the fourth-grade school year through the following summer (September-August). It is available at www.everykidinapark.gov.

The Alpine Visitor Center is a must stop. At 11,796ft above sea level, it is the highest visitor center in the entire national park system. It’s about four miles west of Rock Cut and overlooks the Never Summer Range. The only place to purchase food and beverages in the park is at Trail Ridge Store, adjacent to the visitor center at the top of Trail Ridge Road.

Established in 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) protects 415 square miles of spectacular mountain scenery that encompasses 77 mountains of more than 12,000ft in elevation, as well as one of the most technically challenging 14,000ft

peaks, Longs Peak. The park is home to 280 types of birds, including eagles and hawks, and 60 species of animals such as bighorn sheep, black bears, coyotes, elk, mule deer, and moose. More than four million people visited Rocky in 2015, up 21 percent from the previous year, making it one of the busiest national parks in the United States. Total park acreage is 265,795, with 252,085 acres designated as wilderness, making it one of the largest national parks in the United States.

Entrance FeesOn October 1, 2015, Rocky Mountain National Park increased entrance fees to fund

maintenance and improvement projects. Please contact the park for more information. Fees and passes can be paid in U.S. currency by major credit or debit card, cash, or check.

Trail Ridge RoadOpened to the public in July 1932, the 48-mile long Trail Ridge Road, climbing to an

elevation of 12,183ft at its highest point, connects Grand Lake and Estes Park. Approximately 12 miles of the drive is above timberline across tundra, making it the highest continuous paved road in the United States! Past the Grand Lake entrance, the road passes through scenic Kawuneeche Valley where moose munch greenery in the upper reaches of the Colorado River. Grazing elk greet sunrise and sunset in many of the park’s forest-rimmed meadows. Trail Ridge Road then climbs through a series of switchbacks at a grade that doesn’t exceed seven percent. Stone-walled turnouts provide parking spaces for visitors to take in the expansive vistas of the Kawuneeche Valley. The road then crosses the Continental Divide at Milner Pass (10,759ft), where headwaters of the Colorado River flow west to Mexico and the headwaters of the Cache la Poudre River flow east to the Mississippi. From approximately mid-October to mid-May, snow closes Trail Ridge at the Colorado River Trailhead, about ten miles from the Grand Lake entrance. For overnight stays, park visitors must be in a designated campground site or a backcountry campsite reserved by a valid permit.

Holzwarth Historic SiteA preserved, 1920s-era dude ranch nestled in the forest, Holzwarth Historic Site is

located along Trail Ridge Road about seven miles north of Kawuneeche Visitor Center. (John Holzwarth erected the ranch buildings after Prohibition shut down his Denver saloon.) The lodge buildings are reached by a half-mile walk from the parking lot.

NO BARSCell phones don’t always work in the

mountains. Before heading out, make sure your cell phone is charged. When you don’t have cell service, turn your smartphone to airplane mode, which will save the battery by stopping the phone from searching for service. In airplane mode, photos can still be snapped.

TRAVELING IN NATUREPart of vacationing in the Rocky

Mountains is getting away from it all. However, any activity in the mountains involves risk. You must be self-reliant. Be realistic about your physical abilities, know your limits, and use common sense. Have the proper clothing, water, map,

equipment, and food. Most importantly, don’t be a loner. Do backcountry activities as a group. If you do venture out alone, let a responsible person know where you are going and when you return.

PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUTFood scraps, empty cans, bottles, and

other debris are dangerous to animals. However small, litter is litter. No one wants to see other people’s trash, especially in unspoiled nature, so if you brought it in, take it out. Better yet, if you find trash left behind, take that too!

AN APP FOR THATKnow what the

weather is doing before you take off on an adventure! Check the local TV stations or your smartphone for the forecast and the wind chill factor. If it is a windy day, it will feel colder than what the thermometer reads. This is the wind chill factor. For example, if the temperature is 0 degrees and the wind speed is 20 miles per hour, the wind chill makes it feel like it is minus 22 degrees, so dress accordingly.

PROTECT OUR WILDLIFEBears, and other animals like fox, coyote,

raccoons, and birds can be attracted to human food and trash. Purposely trying to attract wild animals to get closer by enticing them with food is against the law. Animals that become dependent on human food will die when the humans leave. No matter how cute they are, don’t feed them!Don’t go for a selfie with a photo

bombing moose or try to get closer to one. And, if you think mama bears are protective of their young, you are wrong. Female moose are very protective and can move much faster than you think!

CHOOSE WATERDehydration can lead

to numerous health complications. Begin

increasing your fluid intake (meaning water!) before starting any activity. The decreased atmospheric pressure will cause you to breathe more rapidly and lose more body water. Always carry water and drink two or three times more water than usual. It is better to take small sips at regular intervals instead of a lot at one time. The water in Grand Lake tastes great. You don’t need to buy bottled water. Instead, buy a souvenir Grand Lake water bottle and fill it up!

ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINEConsuming both dehydrates the body

and you will feel their effect more quickly at high altitude, although everyone reacts differently. Match the alcohol or caffeine you consume with an equal quantity of water.

SUCH PRESSUREOne is under a lot less pressure here,

and we don’t mean stress. We mean atmospheric pressure.While it may seem that there is less

oxygen here, there is less atmospheric pressure, which gives the impression of a lack of air to breathe. This relative decrease in oxygen content in the air requires the body to create more red blood cells to increase its uptake of oxygen. While adjusting to high altitude takes time, overcoming the effects of altitude is often resolved as the body acclimates. There is nothing specific about a person’s age, sex, or physical fitness that is linked to altitude sickness. Some people get it and some people don’t. Altitude sickness symptoms include

fatigue, decreased appetite, nausea, headache, and sleep disturbances. Rest and drinking lots of water during the first two days usually resolve the sickness. If symptoms become worse, medical advice should be sought.

BOOMSummer storms in the Colorado

mountains can be electrifying so keep an eye on the sky. Lightning can occur more at higher elevations due to the air and climate being drier.Most storms roll through in the

afternoon and generally don’t linger. If caught in a storm, seek shelter on a low spot and allow it to pass over.

DRESS FOR SUCCESSThe best way to dress all year round is

to layer. Avoid cotton, especially when doing high-energy activities. Cotton retains water and will cause you to get chilled. With layers, you can add one if you are cold and remove one if you are too warm. Maintaining your body’s temperature is essential. A vest and shell are always good to have with you.Most adults lose ten percent of their

heat through their head, so wear a hat. Your hands and feet get colder for several reasons — they are farthest from the heart so, when you are cold, your hands and feet can get cold. Have non-cotton socks and gloves with you.

SNOW!?Heed this warning: It can snow

somewhere in Colorado every month of the year. Be prepared in case you are in that “somewhere.” It can get cold very fast, even in the summer, so be prepared and carry an extra layer of clothing.

PRACTICE SAFE SUNApply sunscreen with SPF 25 or higher.

Lube up at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun, which allows the sunscreen to bond to your skin. You will sunburn much more easily than you’d expect because of the thinner atmosphere.Don’t forget the lips. Use a lip balm that

contains sunscreen and reapply every one to two hours to avoid chapped lips. Wind can really dry out your lips so keep them protected.

Hummingbirds are beautiful tiny birds that weigh only two to three grams. The humming noise is their wings beating 80 times per second. They can maneuver at 50mph darting in and out. Hummingbirds are the only bird that can fly backward, and their feet are only for perching, not walking. Due to their rapid breathing and heart rate, they eat often and love the sweet Rocky Mountain wildflowers. Four species migrate to this area of Colorado: Broad-tailed, Rufous, Black-chinned and Calliope.

Elk are sociable animals; they are seldom found without other elk nearby. These majestic animals with a prominent white rump and tan coat can stand up to five feet tall and can weigh 1,100lbs. The stately elk (wapiti) can be seen in the morning or early evening along the edges of clearings in the Kawuneeche Valley meadows of Rocky Mountain National Park or higher up. In the fall, bull elk are famous for their bugling that echoes across the valleys.

The official Colorado state animal is the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, found only in the Rockies. With massive, curved horns, these large animals are known for their agility and perfect sense of balance. They are related to goats and have balance-aiding split hooves and rough hoof bottoms for natural grip. In late fall, the loud crack of two majestic rams head-butting one another can be heard for a great distance.

The beautiful and cunning red fox is found throughout the Rockies. It is very intelligent and

adapts well to human environments. Its long bushy tail with a distinctive white tip provides balance for jumping. The red fox has orange-red fur on its back, sides, and head and white fur under its neck and on its chest. Its strong legs allow it to reach speeds of 45mph, a great benefit for catching prey and evading predators. Red foxes are solitary hunters who feed on rodents, rabbits, birds, and other small game, but their diet can be flexible, depending on their environment.

Moose jams have nothing to do with music. A moose jam is a condition caused by people in cars stopping to view moose in a meadow or by the roadside. Moose can be spotted at almost any time of the day, along the road, in parking lots, even walking into town. Moose can be considered the unofficial mascot of Grand Lake. Male moose, called bulls, average seven feet tall at the shoulder and can weigh in excess of 1,500lbs. Female moose, called cows, usually aren’t as big as bulls, with an average weight of 450-800lbs. It’s exciting to see moose but walk out of your way to avoid them. Respect a wild animal that stands 6ft tall, can weigh half a ton, has sharp hoofs, big antlers and a really mean disposition.

The name “black bear” is misleading since the bear can range in color from blond to black. Bears are generally shy, but you should always use caution in brushy areas, near a stream, or where the trail rounds a bend. Never underestimate the power of a surprised bear! Bears usually have a clumsy, plodding walk, but don’t be fooled; they can move like greased lightning. Bears have been known to approach cabins if trash is left out. In most cases, they will detect you and leave, but if you see a bear, calmly and slowly leave the area. Do not run or make sudden movements.

Coyotes in populated areas are not fearful of people. Able to run 40mph, they have been known to attack pets and approach people. With grayish-yellowish-brown fur and white fur on the belly, coyotes can be three to four feet long and weigh 20-50lbs. They have long bushy tails and run with them down, while domestic dogs run with tails up. Coyotes communicate with a distinctive call, which at night often develops into a raucous canine chorus. These adaptable animals will eat almost anything and form packs in the fall and winter for more effective hunting.

Graceful pronghorn antelope can run at 44mph with short bursts to 70mph. They can leap horizontally four to eight meters but they can’t jump fences. (Go figure!) You can see bands of pronghorns in the meadows between Granby and Grand Lake.

on one of the four courses this area has to offer.Grand Lake Golf Course, Country Road

48 off US Hwy 34 past the entrance to the village of Grand Lake, is par 72 playing 6,650 yards. This 18-hole championship golf course is at an elevation of 8,420ft and borders Rocky Mountain National Park with vistas of the snowcapped Never Summer Range. Eat at Sly Fox Restaurant and Lounge. Golf Granby Ranch is two miles south of Granby and 17 miles north of Winter Park. Par 72, 18 holes, 7,200 yards. The front nine is set along the Fraser River while the back nine runs up and down a narrow valley. This scenic course consistently ranks as one of the top mountain golf courses in Colorado. south of Granby. Par 108, 27 holes, three distinct nines. It was named the 2015 Best Mountain Golf Course by Colorado Avid Golfer magazine. KAUFFMAN HOUSE MUSEUM

The museum is in the historic Kauffman House, a former stage stop and restored log hotel built in 1892. The museum

provides a glimpse into the early days of Grand Lake and the colorful characters who made western history. Grand Lake Area Historical Society operates and maintains the historic building. A gallery was added in 1990 to house additional exhibits, which change periodically.The museum is listed in the National

ATV/UTV RENTALSGet out and explore the backcountry on

an ATV single ride or a side-by-side UTV (RZR). An ATV has handlebars and an open saddle and is small enough to get-up-and-go. A UTV is larger with side-by-side seats. Trails around Grand Lake are generally rideable in early June through early October.

HIGH-ALTITUDE FISHINGThe waters around Grand Lake and

Granby offer many opportunities for just about every type of fisherman.Brown trout, rainbow trout, and

mackinaw (lake trout) have made Grand Lake (256ft deep) their home. While shoreline access is limited, the best areas to fish around the lake are public. Shadow Mountain Reservoir is a

shallow lake (24ft deep; yes, this is correct!), prolific in undergrowth, with a deeper basin closer to the dam. As the Colorado River flows through the spillway, it forms an excellent year-round, tail-water fishery. Lake Granby (221ft deep) is a destination

County is an exhilarating experience and offers something for everyone, no matter what your winter passions are. However, it is important to recognize avalanche-prone slopes. If you are serious about your backcountry adventure, take a class from a professional. Never take unnecessary risks! Always check current weather and forecasts posted by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. http://avalanche.state.co.us.Here are some tips to help ensure that

your experience is fun and safe.• Never venture into avalanche-prone

territory alone. • Have the proper equipment, which

includes a map of the region, an avalanche transceiver, a probe pole, and a shovel. Know how to use them.

• Understand your limitations and stay within them.

• Even when you are in a group, tell a reliable person where you are going and inform them when you’ve safely returned.

• Carry extra food, water, and a first aid kit. Also carry extra socks and gloves.

• Keep your cell phone turned off or in airplane mode and inside your coat so the cold doesn’t drain the battery. You will likely not get service in the mountains so don’t rely on it; however, text messages can often be sent with less signal.

• Follow all posted safety warnings.• Prepare your car for winter driving.

Leave with a full tank of gas. Keep boots, blankets, water, snacks, and a flashlight in your car. A shovel is not a bad idea either.

trails around Grand Lake, it’s no wonder it is considered the Snowmobile Capital of Colorado™ . The best snowmobiling in Colorado includes 150 miles groomed by Grand Lake Trailgroomers Snowmobile Club. There are an additional 700 miles of trails in Grand County.Unguided snowmobile trips may be

taken on any of the trails that are open to motorized winter vehicles. To protect wildlife habitat, motorized vehicles are not allowed in wilderness areas nor in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). An exception to no machines in RMNP is the North Supply Access Trail in the southwest corner of the park, which connects Grand Lake to interconnected trails adjacent to the park. IMPORTANT TIPSRide your snowmobile with the same

respect as when you drive your car. Slow down when approaching corners, be respectful of other trail users and stay alert for wildlife, although they’ll hear you coming! All trails are two-way so ride with care and be aware that backcountry skiers, snowshoers and riders on fat bikes might be using the same trails.

Always ride a trail as if you’ve never been on it before, even if it is a familiar one. Big sleds are subject to the same avalanche danger as other backcountry users, so know conditions before you go.Out-of-state residents who bring

snowmobiles into Colorado must purchase a Colorado Non-Resident Snowmobile Permit, which is available at a State Park office, at authorized businesses in Grand Lake, or at www.parks.state.co.us.

COLORADO NOISE LIMITPlease ensure that your machine is up

to date with the maximum allowable noise level for snowmobiles in the high country, which is 88 decibels. The Colorado Snowmobile Association supports the limit: “We don’t think a loud sled with exhaust is an appropriate use of public land.”

FIREWORKS IN GRAND LAKEA long-standing tradition is the

incredible fireworks display over Grand Lake on New Year’s Eve during Winter Carnival in mid January and on the 4th of July. The fireworks can be seen from many local businesses in town with patios. They may also be viewed from Lake Avenue, Lake Park, and the beach. Another viewing point is near the East Inlet boat launch. Many businesses have live music and extended hours following the fireworks. Firework shows are dependent on weather and fire advisories.

two distinct styles of skiing. Most people are familiar with the original form, classic skiing, that resembles a walking motion, kicking and gliding on groomed, parallel tracks.Skate skiing resembles

in a cross country ski area, so are the trails. Classic skis are longer and, for beginners, are often waxless with a fish-scale pattern under the midsection of the ski, which grips the snow. Boots are mounted on the skis only at the toes; the heel is free to move up and down. Skate skis are shorter and stiffer and don’t have a metal edge for stopping. When the trails are groomed, a track is created for classic skiers; skate skiers use the open groomed part of a trail.

SNOWSHOEINGSnowshoeing is a great way to extend

your hiking and running into winter. Simply attach a pair of lightweight

aluminum frames to your shoes or boots and trek off onto your old favorite or new to-be-discovered trail. It is a wonderful activity to share with a group of all ages and ability levels, and it can also be a tremendous and inexpensive way to discover the solitude of the abundant trails in the area.

WHERE TO GOGrand Lake Nordic Center has long

been a jewel in Grand County, offering scenic views of Rocky Mountain National Park and Arapaho National Forest. The Center offers beginner to advanced skiers a variety of terrain on 35km of classic and skate skiing trails. The terrain and trails are also excellent for snowshoeing, plus there is a dedicated dog loop and a free tubing hill. Visitors can relax in the lodge, sit by the fire, and have a warm drink while overlooking the trails and

mountain vistas. If you’ve not tried Nordic skiing, take a lesson from one of the trained instructors. Season passes and rentals are available. There are many special events during winter months, including Full Moon Skis, free lesson days, and guided snowshoe

Colorado Headwaters Land Trust is highly successful and highly regarded in the state of Colorado. Its mission is to preserve and steward open lands in the headwaters of the Colorado River for vistas, wildlife, ranch lands, and water, in partnership with landowners and for the benefit of all. Most visitors to Grand Lake aren’t aware that the headwaters of the

Colorado River — one of the west’s most majestic and, sadly, threatened rivers — are in Rocky Mountain National Park. In 2014 the Colorado briefly flowed all the way to the Gulf of Mexico for the first time in over 30 years. According to the Colorado Headwaters Land Trust:“The name Colorado Headwaters Land Trust reflects our mission, our

geographic focus, and the fact that the headwaters of the Colorado River — including many of its headwaters tributaries such as the Fraser River — are located in Grand County. From its headwaters in Rocky Mountain National Park, the Upper Colorado River is struggling to retain its valuable natural attributes: critical cold-water aquatic habitat, wetlands, vital water rights, working ranches, scenic open space, and world-class rafting and fly fishing.”The land trust’s primary land-protection tool is the conservation

easement, a voluntary, binding legal document between the landowner and the land trust. It identifies the conservation values that qualify a property and permanently protects those values for public benefit by restricting development, subdivision, and other non-compatible uses. Colorado Headwaters Land Trust currently holds 60 conservation easements on 7,423 acres.As Grand County residents, we feel fortunate to have the birthplace of
