The market in the 1980s was dominated by Danish manufacturers who early on had cornered a significant share in export due to large projects in the USA. In this period in Germany, the first pioneers of wind energy recognized its enormous potential and started to develop and build the first commercial wind turbines.

In these pioneering days of wind energy in Germany, we developed our first pro-ject, a 30 kW wind turbine, which was later manufactured by Husum Shipyard (HSW). This first successful project has been followed by 29 other development projects to date, with the wind turbines having very different technologies and up to 10 MW power. The success story of our projects and our customers is seen in a market share of 11% of the worldwide installed wind energy power.

Thirty years experience is like a small eternity in wind energy, a branch that is still fairly new on the scene. The pioneer of wind energy has turned into the leading, globally operating engineering firm for wind turbines.

Already at the beginning of the 1990s, the rated power of some new devel-opments went beyond the magic threshold of 1000 kW. Because of the rapid growth in wind energy in its early years, many developers and manufacturers however were faced by enormous technical and organizational challenges which not all could cope with. In this turbulent period, some manufacturers did not survive these problems.

We played a leading role in these days and our engineers were able to avoid many mistakes due to the huge background experience they had accumulated in the meantime and to their systematic engineering work. An example of this is the cooperation with Husum Shipyard in the development of the HSW 750. In 1993, this grew into the HSW 1000 which sold very well right into the new millennium.

At the beginning of the millennium, a new power class, the 1.5 MW turbine, became established and for the first time built in mass production based on modern aspects. This transition from a small-batch production to an industrial mass production however placed great demands on the engineers, suppliers and turbine manufacturers. Questions such as delivery reliability and quality assur-ance for components, cost reduction, enhanced reliability and efficiency of the turbines as well as easy-to-assemble and maintenance-friendly designs led to a series of progress and enhancements.

In this period, we once again proved our innovative strength and foresight with the development of the MD70/77 platform which still leads the field today. From the beginning of this development, we kept an eye on the new challenges that result from mass production and developed a wind turbine that is optimized for it and is produced under license by five manufacturers.

This platform concept has been continued to the present and optimized and has resulted in the aeroMaster product series with 1.5 MW, 2.5MW and 4 MW turbine models for onshore projects and 5 MW and 10 MW for offshore projects as well as the AEblade product series for rotor blades.

The 1.5 MW platform developed by us is so successful that it is manufactured under license by five German manufacturers at once.

At an early stage, experts saw the necessity of using offshore wind energy to achieve ambitious goals for climate protection and expansion of renewable ener-gies. However, initial enthusiasm suffered a few setbacks because the available turbines were not up to the noticeably harsher offshore conditions. New pro-cesses and technologies had to be developed to master these challenges.

In 1996 we are the first to develop a new turbine generation which is opti-mized specifically for offshore use. With Multibrid technology, a new drive train concept emerges which combines all the advantages of the previously known technologies. Uncompromising lightweight construction, compactness for opti-mal transport and installation plus unmatched reliability for lowering operational costs are only a few of the features which illustrate the qualities of the Multibrid turbine and the engineering feat implemented in it.

To date we have added four further offshore projects to this first one. These make us the leading engineering firm in the field of offshore wind energy.
