Over the past few years, our country has suffered through one of the worst financial cri-

ses since the Great Depression. Many people have lost their homes to foreclo-sure and seen their retirement accounts dwindle. The media has been filled with stories of large Wall Street banks whose investment banking and lending practices contributed to these economic woes.

In the process, financial institutions as a whole were painted with a broad, negative brush. Big Wall Street banks and small com-munity banks were all viewed as responsible for the economic meltdown.

In reality, most local community banks were not a cause of the financial crisis.

In thousands of cities, towns and rural areas across the country, most community banks have continued to adhere to safe, secure lending practices. Every loan request is carefully reviewed by local banking pro-fessionals to ensure that it meets the bank’s high standards. As a result, these banks have maintained levels of capital that enable them to lend money in the communities they

serve. Much of their lending helps support commerce and small businesses leading to more job creation.

“Banks are not lending money” is an-other refrain frequently heard in the news. That may be true for some larger banks. But community banks continue to play a critical role in our economy by stepping in and making sound loans. Their in-depth knowledge of their markets and locally-focused team give them an important edge. From growing a small business to financing a home to sending your children to college, community banks are ready to help people achieve their dreams.

In response to the financial crisis and its effects, many news reports clamor for more government regulation of banks. Although a substantial system of national banking regulations has been in place for many years, there is always room for improvement, including the need to improve risk manage-ment practices of all banks.

But most community banks take pride in meeting or exceeding the federal govern-ment’s requirements for everything from

capital levels to earnings to loan and invest-ment portfolio quality to the bank manage-ment’s ability to identify and control risk. They are continually mindful of the govern-ment’s number one objective to ensure the safety and soundness of the national bank-ing system.

Community banks remain true to their mission. As always, they will continue their daily commitment to provide financial products and services to their customers in local markets. Their sound banking prac-tices have always and will continue to make a positive contribution to the communities they serve.

What To Know About Community Banks and the Financial Crisis

Craig S. Connor is the President and CEO of Hillsdale County National Bank and CNB Com-munity Bancorp, Inc., a $340-million community bank headquartered in Hillsdale, Michigan. He

currently serves on the Hillsdale Community Health Center Board of Trustees, and is a mem-ber of the Hillsdale Board of Public Utilities.

This time of year is so exciting with all the baking, laughter and Christmas lights. Families coming together to celebrate holiday cheer. There is nothing better than piling into a car, singing carols and going out to see all of the holiday lights illuminating in the night air, smiling faces everywhere. It’s not hard to imagine, at least one thing that you are grate-ful for, whether it be family, friends, co-workers or the first beautiful snow fall of the season.

In this issue of Metro You magazine, we show you gift ideas for your loved ones, neighbors and friends. What is not mentioned among our pages are the gifts of Gratitude and Kindness. These days, with the holidays starting as ear-ly as Halloween, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. We tend to forget the true meaning of giving, being thankful and sometimes just showing kind-ness. It’s as easy as giving a casual smile as you hurry by to brighten someone’s day or allowing a car to merge in ahead of you. Can you imagine how great it would be if everyone paused for a moment and said to themselves, who could I help today? How can I make a difference in just one per-sons life? Who needs my help and how can I pay it forward? Now.... that would be a gift worth giving. No matter what

your status is in life, there will always be someone who is less fortunate than you. There are many ways that we can help in our community, whether it be taking time to help in our local soup kitchen, giving a homeless person a pair of mittens as you drive by in your nice warm car, cleaning your closets to give clothing to a family in need or adopt a fam-ily for christmas. It helps more that you know. It could be kind gesture such as, knowing that your neighbor has had a rough year with unemployment and taking a casserole over to them, just because you care. In a world that struggles with so much hurt and despair, be someone’s shining star. Marlanea and I would like to wish all of you a very blessed holiday. We hope that you find the time to sit and reflect on all the good that life has to offer. Pay attention to the young children, their innocence and happiness can be contagious if you let it. To our readers; we ask that you take the time to read our advertisements and support those business’s that make Metro You possible, as they are the reason that we can offer a women’s publication each and every month to enjoy. From Our Home to Yours, Wishing you the blessings of warmth and good cheer this Holiday Season.

Happy Holidays!

From the

publisherWelcome to the premier issue of Simply Hers Magazine. I am pleased to present a local magazine that woman of all ages can enjoy. I love the way a woman can get lost in the pages, the way a daydream can sneak in when you see the perfect holiday decorating idea. I love the excitement and anticipation of trying to create the perfect soufflé from the recipe pages. I even love to cry when I share the struggle of a

woman fighting against the insurmountable odds of cancer.

This is why I have chosen to come home and begin Simply Hers. Although Hillsdale has always been the place I called home for the last 5 years I have lived away. It’s so nice to be back and to share my passion with the community that I love. I also wanted to begin in the most wonderful season of the year, the holiday season. So please join me in celebrating the beginning of a dream. I welcome all of my readers to share ideas, thoughts and criticisms. In this issue I am introducing a wonderful movement with which I hope to change our little corner of the world. Pay it forward is not my idea but I have chosen to join the movement and I encourage you to do the same. Also, I would like to thank each and every advertiser who has supported this magazine. What a leap of faith! I have listed each of them on the next page and encourage everyone to patronize their establishments.

Well, Thank you again for taking a moment out of your busy schedule to visit. Please enjoy, I’ll see you again in January, 2011.

FASHIONFOR THE HOLIDAYS

Dana Buchman basket weave sweater $50, jeans $50, bracelet $28, hobo handbag $70, and shoes $70, available at Kohl’s, Michigan

locations, www.kohls.com.

Whether your social calendar is completely full or you just want to look as festive as you feel this time of year, the days between

Thanksgiving and New Years Day are definitely the perfect opportunity to raise your fashion game to a whole new dazzling level. While the runways of Paris, Milan and New York may not be entirely meaningful to your lifestyle (or wallet), they do show trends that the rest of us can adapt to give our holiday look some extra cheer and style this year.

TREND: RED, CAMEL AND BLUEThere aren’t many colors that say “holiday” more than red. All shades of red are hot, hot, hot and traditionally festive for the holidays. If you want to tone it down a bit, camel is a very popular color this fall and winter season and can look really fresh and updated for holiday when mixed with denim, or warm golden browns, mahogany or copper. Also, blues in an icy cool color range from cobalt to dark turquoise are striking enough to send away any holiday blues that might try to come your way.

TREND: CHUNKY SWEATERSMichigan winters can be brutally cold and snowy during the winter season, but with fashionable chunky sweaters EVERYWHERE there is no reason this season to catch a chill for the sake of fashion. Chunky sweaters are versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Jenna Kator Collection Rochester clutch, $62, available at Especially for You, Adrian, 517.263.0408 or www.jennakatorcollection.com.

Elle dress $60 and wristlet $36, available at Kohl’s, Michigan locations, www.kohls.com.

TREND: STATEMENT JEWELRYA wonderful way to take any ho-hum outfit to the next level is with statement jewelry. A basic black dress or sweater can go from, well, basic to fabulous with the addition of a stunning statement piece of jewelry such as a necklace, earrings, bracelet or ring. Be careful not to wear too many statement pieces of jewelry at one time or your statement will be overwhelming.

TREND: PARTY DRESSES

The little black dress is always in style and can be stepped up this season with a statement necklace or touch of lace. However, if you feel confident adding to your party dress collection with a new dress or two, dresses with embellishments or fun colors and prints (leopard is still very hot) worn with tights are a great way to get noticed at any occasion and, as a bonus, dresses are a wonderful, pulled together look requiring little effort during this busy time of year.

TREND: SHOES AND ACCESSORIES WITH SOMETHING SPECIAL

It’s not the holiday season without a little glitz and glamour and a terrific place to show off special trend right details is in your choice of shoes and/or accessories. Feminine details such as ruffles and bows on any shoe, handbag or accessory are a pretty yet sophisticated touch. If you would like to add a little holiday sparkle and shine to your outfit, it can be done subtly as in metal hardware on a fun clutch or a bit more obvious with metallic stilettos and matching handbag. Anyway you look at it, the holidays are definitely the best time of year to add something extra special into your wardrobe.

The kids seem to really enjoy this opportunity to make a difference. Hopefully now, they understand you don’t need to be prompted to do nice things and maybe they will recognize when nice things are happening around them. Mes. Butler

Pay It Forward. What comes to mind when you hear those words? Do you think of the movie with that sweet little boy who believed he could change the world through a chain of kindness? Do you think of the book from which the movie is based? Do you think of kind gestures?

Since watching the movie Pay it Forward, I have always been fascinated with the idea that helping in even the smallest way can bring about huge change. It begins with doing a favor for another person ~ without any expectation of being paid back. Indeed one would request that the recipi-ent of that favor do the same for someone else ~ ideally, for three other people. The unconditional favors can be large or small. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. It can just seem that way, depending on whom you do it for. There’s really no end to what you can do when you set your mind to Pay It Forward. So Let’s change the world! OK, I know that seems a little over the top, but just think about it for a moment. The world isn’t just on the other side of the globe; it’s also on the other side of the street. Maybe, if we all join together, we CAN change the world.

As part of the Pay it Forward movement Charley Johnson of Snug-ZUSA created a white silicone bracelet with the words “Pay It Forward” printed in bold purple letters. The idea that wearing the bracelet provides that subtle reminder to help others and then passing the bracelet along to a person they have helped. Johnson is currently working cooperatively with Catherine Ryan Hyde, the author of the book, Pay It Forward and the bracelet concept has reached 53 countries and nearly every continent. After reading the article about Johnson’s vision and the Pay It Forward To-day movement I was inspired to introduce the program in our community. “Changing the way we think, one bracelet at a time.”

The program was recently introduced to Mrs. Butlers 4th grade class at Pittsford Elementary School. She and the students were very excited and plan to continue the “Pay It Forward” Program throughout the

year with a variety of Activities that the children can participate in. The first scheduled activity will be designing and delivering Halloween cards to the residence at the Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Butler has also indicated that many of the children in her class have family members serving in the armed forces, the class plans to send care packages. I look forward to regular updates from Mrs Butlers class and will share their Pay It Forward experiences with you! I will dedicate a portion of Simply Hers to tell the stories that emerge as Pay It Forward circulates throughout our community.

Have you been inspired to make a difference? To receive your Pay It Forward bracelet send your request via email to [email protected].

We all want to look our best on a regular basis, but during the holidays with many

parties, celebrations and events to attend the stakes somehow

seem higher. Since women typically focus

on everyone and everything else but

themselves during the busy holiday season, it

is the perfect oppor-tunity to treat yourself

to a few new beauty products to update

and renew your look to make it look fresh and current – even if

it doesn’t reflect your energy level at the

moment. It’s amazing to see how a hot new

lipstick or eye shadow color can brighten

your holiday look and outlook.

‘TIS THE SEASON TO SPARKLE

PHILOSOPHY MAKEUP OPTIONAL SKIN KIT FOR DRY SKINTrend: Flawless Skin

Just when you want to look your best, holiday stress and late nights along with party food and cold weather typically provide a cocktail that is hard on your skin and

beauty regime. Flawless skin provides a clear, beautiful canvas for your makeup and is a beauty trend that pretty much never goes out of style. During the holiday rush, it is especially important to keep up with your skin care routine (or start one!) in order

to look your very best during this festive time of year.

WHAT GLITTERS GLOWS EYE PALETTETrend: Striking EyesThe perfect holiday eyes this year are either smoky, smudgy and sexy with a touch of shimmer or memorable and merry with bright colors that really make peepers pop. Whatever the occasion or your mood, one of these dazzling eye opening looks is sure to make a celebratory statement wherever you go.

KAT VON D LIPSTICKTrend: Red Lips vs. Neutral Lips

Whether you want to rock a bold red lip look with subtle, neutral eye shadow or a neutral, nude lip look with a bolder eye, winter lip colors run the range and can help

emphasize your best facial feature. If you prefer red lips, be sure to select a shade of red that is complimentary to your skin tone and personality – a burgundy red just might be a better choice than an orangey red. If a neutral lip is more your speed, then be certain to select one that is more beige, pink or brown to enhance your natural skin and lip colors.

REACH FOR THE STARS NAIL TRIOTrend: Attention Getting Nails

New nail colors are bold, daring and anything but boring. From a classic red that never goes out of style to a trendy gray or a sparkly gold,

tips and toes can pull together your look and help set the tone for any occasion big or small.

I love the holidays-the hustle and bustle; the food and drink, the traditions. It’s busy, it’s stressful and it’s a time for overindulgence on

all fronts. It’s also a season of GUILT.

GUILT-FREE

HOLIDAYS

18

Page 19: Simply Hers Nov/Dec 2010

Just when you have the opportunity to enjoy all the decadence of the season, you’re worrying about the extra pounds you are going to gain; the cholesterol that’s going to go up; the exercise

routine that’s going to fall by the wayside; and the sleep that is going to be lacking. Of course there is no shortage of articles around this time of year that will tell you how to behave during the holidays so that you will NOT sabotage your best efforts of the past year. “Guilt-Free” holidays are full of the same messages about nutrition and weight gain; exercise, stress and sleep-the four areas that generally go out the window at this time of year. The truth of the matter is, “guilt-free” should really be about putting your fears of completely wrecking your health, in perspective. There are probably 45-60 days out of 365 that your stress levels, exercise habits, food intake and sleep patterns are going to take a hit. And even during that 6-8 week window in November and December, not EVERY day is going to be one of overindulgence, stress, lack of exercise and sleep. Take the long view and enjoy!

NUTRITION/WEIGHT GAIN-it goes without saying that you probably will gain a few pounds during the holiday season. “Let’s get together over the Holidays” is a familiar

mantra that will have you going to more lunches, dinners and happy hours than at any other time of the year. Here are the words of wisdom you will hear at this time of year to ward off those evil calories and eventual weight gain-“eat a plain salad and 32 oz of water before that holiday party and don’t stand by that buffet table when you get there. Water will fill you up and the salad will take an edge off your appetite so that when you arrive, you will not be tempted by the buffet table”(which by the way, includes a Spinach and Artichoke Dip bread bowl; mini mushroom and sausage quiches; fried ravioli, maple glazed nuts, eggnog cheesecake; pumpkin mousse pie and chocolate trifles). All the water and salad in the world is not going to keep you from that selection of goodies! Go ahead and enjoy. You have until the next holiday party to exercise and eat carrot sticks.

EXERCISE-if you are a consistent exerciser throughout the year, good for you! Exercise has benefits you don’t want to miss out on. There’s no reason you shouldn’t try to keep

up with your routine throughout the holiday season. Consistent exercise will help burn extra calories, keep your energy levels high, and keep your immune system strong during the stressful times of running around and celebrating the season. However, the reality is that your schedule is going to be jammed with new, “one time” celebratory occasions. Since exercise generally isn’t an option at 3:00 in the morning, your routine will probably slip a bit. The good news is that there are very few studies, if any that indicate that mortality rates spike for all those that slack off a bit on their exercise routines for two out of twelve months. Your lifespan will not be shortened. Give yourself a break and don’t waste precious time lamenting your lost exercise routine for this short window of time. Exercise when you can, build extra activity into your day (taking stairs, parking further away from the door to the mall, etc.) and you’ll keep a little of the guilt over not doing your usual, at bay.

STRESS-it’s here to stay for a couple of months. No two ways about it… money is flying out of your wallet faster than ever and your “to do” list is long. You can cut half the people off

of your shopping list or decide not to decorate the house or say “no” to all of the events-but you won’t. So focus on the joy and the spirit of the season; acknowledge it will be stressful and that you and others will be crabby and overextended at times and then take a deep breath and enjoy the revelry.

SLEEP-you’ll be deprived for all of the reasons above-you’re over-extended. Of course, feeling your best requires adequate rest. Get it while you can-steal away extra minutes,

if possible, by going to bed a little earlier, taking a “cat-nap” in the afternoon or adding some time on the weekend when you don’t absolutely, positively have to get up at 6:00am. Again, it’s a short- term problem in the scheme of things.

Just remember, eating carrot sticks at a holiday party is no fun-eating the spinach dip is! Enjoy it all in a moderate fashion and leave the denial for the New Year-that’s what New Year’s

Resolutions are all about!

Why do Sue and Sandi call themselves the Pink Eyed Sissies? They jokingly admit, “We cry a lot!” The name also reflects their tendency to view life through rose-colored glasses. This quality gave them the confidence to start a business doing something they truly enjoy. Sandi, previously a controller at an auto dealership, was searching for new opportunities after the dealership changed hands. Sue, who lives in Florida, was helping her homebuilder husband run his office, but business had been slow. When an opportunity presented itself in the form of an old flea market find, the sisters put on their rose-colored glasses and got to work.

Sandi’s home in Jonesville, MI serves as a fitting headquarters for Pink Eyed Sissies. The quaint red-brick farmhouse, owned by her husband’s family since 1946, displays beautiful antique and vintage furnishings. Sandi says her older sister significantly influenced her style. “I’ve always enjoyed antiques, but Sue has been into vintage for years. Her closet is full of vintage clothes, vintage jewelry. She’s really taught me to appreciate vintage; it gives us a commonality, something to do together.” The sisters’ shared passion manifests in the beautiful necklaces and earrings they create.

With the exception of the hardware, Pink Eyed Sissies jewelry consists exclusively of vintage and antique materials. Each beaded necklace features an antique lens pendant. The sisters create settings for the pendants using vintage glitter, die cuts, and monograms. Pieces of old one cent postcards and Victorian trading cards serve as a background for each setting.

Sue and Sandi acquire their materials from suppliers as far away as Germany and Australia, but they prefer to obtain them the old-fashioned way. “It’s most fun when we can go do some shopping,” says Sandi, “although a lot of times we just have to do it online.” They find inspiration anywhere from vintage shows to flea markets. “I love the idea of using something historical that may have meant something to someone else,” Sue says. “It’s a way of preserving a little piece of that history.”

In addition to offering jewelry through their website (www.PinkEyedSissies.com), Sue and Sandi love to interact with clients at different shows across the country. This fall they will head south to participate in Country Living Magazine’s South Fair and Southern Lady Magazine’s Celebration, both in Atlanta. The sisters have found at every show that women of all ages love the jewelry.

This widespread appeal allows them to create custom pieces for different occasions. For an upcoming wedding, Sue and Sandi are designing matching pieces for the bridal party. They also combine their love of old and new in custom pieces refashioned from family jewelry or heirlooms. Because old-fashioned pieces often clash with contemporary fashions, the sisters will work with a client to design a new piece featuring materials from the old. It’s all a part of following their business model of viewing old things from a new perspective.

by Emily ReaganSimply Hers Magazine

When Sue Losey and Sandi Pfeffer discovered a case of antique optometrist

lenses during a flea market excursion, they were intrigued. The sisters immediately conspired to repurpose the lenses. Given their ability to view old things from a new perspective, friends and family had often encouraged Sue and Sandi to turn their creativity into a business, but the sisters lacked the necessary inspiration. Their fortuitous discovery at the flea market combined their love of old things with a desire for new adventure, and the antique lenses became the focal point of Pink Eyed Sissies jewelry.

Why do Sue and Sandi call themselves the Pink Eyed Sissies?

They jokingly admit, “We cry a lot!”

Laura Loveberry

Ever pick up the telephone and you immediately sense something is devastatingly wrong in the caller’s voice? This recently happened when I answered my mom’s long distance call. Within the first few words in the phone call, I recognize in the tone of Mom’s voice, something is just not right. The earth shattering sentence seems to be spoken in slow motion as my world momentarily stops spinning.

“Dad’s cancer is back.”My dad has just months to live. My mind is in

disbelief. In the past ten years, Dad has fought valiantly and beat cancer 5 times. We all felt he would beat it again. He conquers the battle every time. Can this be happening?

Dad is in his 70’s. Just in the last year and a half, Dad made a life-altering decision. He put his faith in Jesus Christ, and his life is made new. So he has new life with dying cancer-filled lungs. Dad stopped drinking, cusses a whole lot less, and has a peace inside him that shows outwardly.

What lead to his decision to trust in Jesus,

receive forgiveness, and embrace newfound refreshing faith? Was it his God-serving wife who goes to church every Sunday, gives compassionately to people, and loves Dad unconditionally for 55 years? Was it the casual outdoor Sunday service where my Dad was invited to hear Bible-based messages for campers? Was it the personal letters Nana asked Dad read to her on her death bed (Letters from Believers who wrote to inspire Nana to put her faith in the one true living God)? Was it the knowledge that an all-knowing God blessed Dad with many years of great health and a handful of

children and grandchildren who honor, respect, and appreciate their Dad and Grandpa? Was it the impact of prayer warriors and church prayer chains all over the country who have kept Dad in their hearts to pray? Was it the 30-second God-talk message on a music CD given as a gift? Was it Mom’s Christian music station playing in the background daily? Was it Dad observing how Christian homes handle life’s conflicts with strength from the all-powerful God? Was it the blessing of family and true friends who reached out and supported Dad with cards and letters in his earlier bouts with cancer and continue now? Was it the heart of his special-needs granddaughter who prays for her hero and grandpa every time prayer requests are asked?

What I know for certain is my Dad is a life at peace by faith in Jesus Christ even in the midst of a deadly diagnosis. It is the power of the cross. The morning I picked up the receiver to hear heartbreaking news is the same morning God used my Bible reading to confirm Dad’s future in heaven. I read the parable in the book of Matthew about the men who worked in a field at different lengths of time (all day, part day, and one hour). All got paid the same, even the one with much less hours. My Dad’s life is in this story. Late in my Dad’s life, the last “hour” of his days on earth, Dad is confirmed to have entrance into the kingdom of God because of his decision for faith in Christ.

Where are you on life’s journey? Are you near the end? Do you have serious health issues? God’s peace is available to you at any hour in any circumstance. Your conversion time could be right now. Reading this short article written through my tears, could be pointing you in the direction of great joy and an everlasting relationship with Jesus Christ. If you discover God’s peace late in life, you find “the last will be first…” Matthew 20:16a NI

Jenna Kator

hile names like Adrian, Traverse City and Detroit evoke vastly different pictures in the minds of Michigan residents, for media

planner turned handbag designer, Jenna Kator, they provide a wealth of inspiration that she blends with clean lines of East Coast designs to create handbags that are distinctively Michigan and universal at the same time.

A Troy native, Jenna turned to a career in fashion accessories after being laid off in December of 2008 from an automotive industry job she held for nine years. Encouraged by her father, Mickey, and her husband, Michael, she decided to strike out on her own and start her own business.

“They say that the best time to start a business is in a bad economy,” Jenna said. “I wanted to help create economy for the state and I found a need in the market place for accessories.”

The following January she began working on designs for handbags, and in October of 2009 she launched her first line in the Jenna Kator Collection. Each bag pays tribute to the Michigan cities for which they are named. With her first line, Jenna drew upon the cities she’d visited as a child.

“I just tapped into my state for inspiration. The bags are all about the residents, the characteristics of the towns, and the unique hidden gems found there,” she said.

Among the cities, of course, are Troy, where she was born and raised, and Adrian, where Michael grew up and where his parents still live. She’s also designed bags inspired by Detroit, Traverse City, Mackinac, Holland and Royal Oak among others.

Jenna is now on her third collection of bags and developing ideas for her fourth with her business expanding rapidly. While the bags look and feel like they are made of genuine leather, Jenna uses vegetarian leather that is made without animal byproducts. The bags are refined, yet she’s able to keep prices affordable.

“Going into the process I wanted leather,” Jenna said, “but I learned that if I was going to

have leather and keep my bags under $100, that’s not realistic.”

Her designs are functional and versatile, yet stylish and refined. Bags range from small clutch pieces to roomy over-the-shoulder totes with unique detail and personality. Jenna says she’s constantly watching how various women carry bags in order to come up with ideas for new designs.

“Creativity comes from observing the market place. I watch the different demographics, how they use their bags. A woman with a stroller uses a bag differently than, say, someone in their 70s,” she said.

Jenna Kator designer handbags are now carried in shops in Florida, Indiana, Virginia and Washington. In addition, 25 stores throughout Michigan showcase the Jenna Kator Collection, including Especially for You, located at 129 S. Main Street in Adrian. Jenna also has a showroom in Royal Oak.

MOORE INSURANCE SERVICESLife insurance may be one of the most overlooked items people forget about. In the event of a tragedy, life insurance proceeds can help pay the bills, continue a family business, finance future needs like your children’s education, protect your spouse’s retirement plans, and much more. Life insurance provides cash to your family after your death. This cash (known as the death benefit) replaces your income. What’s more, there is no federal income tax on life insurance benefits.

It’s always a struggle when you lose someone you love. But your emotional struggles don’t need to be compounded by financial difficulties. Life insurance helps make sure that the people you care about will be provided for financially, even if you’re not there to care for them yourself. Call Moore Insurance Services (517) 439-9345 today and let us show you the many different life insurance options.

When decorating your home for the holidays, you don’t always have to deck the halls. Sometimes it’s the simplest details that make your spaces feel warm and inviting. Pick a few areas here and there that might benefit from a little embellishment. Then you can stretch your creativity and your budget to make an impact without going overboard. While adding to what’s already there is a given

when you decorate for any occasion, it’s easy to get carried away. Remember to remove some existing pieces to make way for your seasonal selections.

Accentuate mirrors with feathered boas in celebratory hues. Glass bowls can be filled with color-coordinated candies, such as gum drops or jelly beans. You might also try some festive faux fruit for a more sophisticated feel.

Fill a few picture frames with your favorite holiday cards. Then group them together for a

cheerful composition. You can also attach your cards to a large message board for a one-of-a-kind collage.

Sticking to a particular color scheme or holiday theme will tie everything together for a more cohesive look. Search for multiples of ornaments and other seasonal décor for repetition.

Fabrics offer a fast and affordable way to give your home a more festive feel. Go for velvet or felt that can be layered for more texture.

Wrap holiday lights around something unexpected, such as a table base or a large container. Plug them in and dim your overhead lights for a soothing holiday setting.

Create a scrapbook from last year’s photos that can be propped open on a coffee table for everyone to enjoy. Take pictures of your favorite decorations for future inspiration.

Adorn your candles with colorful earrings and pins for a more decorative look. Chandeliers come to life when draped with anything that dangles, such as ornaments or seasonal greens.

The holidays offer the perfect opportunity to appeal to the senses when sprucing up your home. Cinnamon-scented pine cones are a welcome addition as are bells that hang from your front door to announce the arrival of your guests.

Winter boots become spontaneous containers for your seasonal floral arrangements. Place vases inside to hold the required water for real blooms. Or simply fill them with a variety of

silk flowers for a longer lasting look.

Opt for a variety of smaller trees placed throughout your home instead of or in addition to a large one. This gives you the opportunity to create different themes or color schemes, such as a kid-friendly version for a child’s room. Consider placing your tree inside a garden urn in lieu of a tree skirt.

Start gathering ideas from store displays and magazines to come up with something new or to tweak what you already have. You can start by setting the tone for your home with your outdoor spaces. Potted evergreens make a simple statement when they flank your front door. This will let your visitors know to expect more of the same inside.

When you walk into someone’s home, you see beautiful, warm carpet, rich-looking ceramic tile, elegant hardwood floors and attractive drapes or blinds. This shows a true investment in a home. What can you do to keep your investment at its fullest potential? Proper maintenance is the key. All manufacturers recommend that you have skilled professionals come to your home to clean using the proper tools.

Most carpets have a warranty which is maintained as long as you have the carpet commercially cleaned every 16 to 18 months. Professional carpet cleaners using a truck mounted system and CRI approved equipment will lift dirt out of the fibers of the carpet. In most cases this will reset the fibers and twists making the carpet come back to life and looking like new.

Hard surfaces, such as ceramic tile, need to be scrubbed to pull the dirt out of the grout. Professionals then suggest resealing the grout with a good penetrating sealer. Grout can also be stained with an epoxy for a new color and clean, fresh look.

The finish on hardwood floors will last longer if you don’t use water. You should use a cleaner specifically designed for wood floors which does not contain pH. Be careful not to use old wax on new pre-finished wood designs. This could do more damage than good to your floor.

As for window treatments, I would recommend a certified fabric care specialist to clean drapes due to the different mixes of fabrics involved. Drapes should be carefully dry cleaned to avoid shrinkage. Bleeding of the material may occur if the drape is not properly dried or is not hung cor-rectly during the drying process.

Cleaning blinds can be very touchy as there are so many styles and fabrics. Very few blinds can stand up to the old bathtub wash and still keep their original look and shape. This method of cleaning could also void the warranty. You should contact the manufacturer or company where the blinds were made for proper cleaning instructions and procedures.

Daily maintenance such as mopping and vacuuming will make your investments last a very long time. Count on professionals to help keep your investment in the best shape possible, looking as though newly installed. Enjoy our home!

Find the perfect gift for

the chef in your life

About three years ago, I left my job of thirty one years. Like many working women, I had spent the biggest share of those years juggling a full time career with being a mother and wife.

In the first few months with my new-found freedom of time, I experienced a burst of pent up energy and motivation to tear into my cluttered house. I couldn’t wait to finally experience organized perfection!

During this quest, I have learned a lot (one obvious thing is that perfection will forever elude me)! I love reading every organizing article and magazine I can get my hands on. I also enjoy finding creative solutions for my storage-challenged house. Making an honest effort to clean out what I don’t need/want and organize what I do need/want, I have made some discoveries.

From that evolved a newsletter I’ve been writing to share with friends and family. I titled it S.O.S. because there have been times when knee-deep in “treasures” and overwhelmed, I almost had to send out a distress signal!

I also realized there are three key components to dealing with clutter and keeping it under control...the commitment to sort, organize, and simplify.

The newsletter will now become this column where I will give you organizing tips, ideas, projects, and most of all, encouragement. In the months to come, I will share things I’ve read about, figured out, and tried in my own home. Let’s face it, most of us can identify with these basic facts- 1. We have collected way too much stuff!

2. We don’t have the time or energy to deal with way too much stuff!

3. Our kids do not want to own or get rid of, our way too much stuff!

4. We are not ready to stop collecting or buying so we continue to add to our way too much stuff!

We will tackle these problems with easy, inexpensive, and practical solutions. Whether you are at a point in your life where you are ready to yell “SOS” and jump in with both feet or just want to take baby steps, I will help you reclaim your space with realistic solutions. No journey is without its frustrations but we’ll do it together and probably even share a laugh or two along the way! So get your label maker ready and meet me back here- prepared to Sort, Organize, and Simplify your life.

— Your organizing questions, suggestions, and comments are welcome. Email Peggie at [email protected]. Please put ‘SOS’ in the subject line. **

Imagine the joyful sight of twinkling holiday lights on richly decorated, towering Christmas trees and halls

decked with boughs of holly. Picture a traditional seasonal feast for the senses made that much more enjoyable because you didn’t have to untangle a single strand of lights, wrestle to straighten the Tannenbaum, or hang a bit of greenery. ‘Tis the season for holiday home tours, when historic house museums as well as neighbors in towns across Michigan open their wreath bedecked doors to share the décor and spirit that one song calls, “the most wonderful time of the year.”

41st Annual Holiday Bazaar

Hi, I’m Willie. I have one husband, four kids, two dogs and one cat. One or all of them have at one time or another has pushed me over the edge. Right now though, it’s not any of them. It’s me! I’m fat.

Okay, maybe not FAT, but I do have an extra 25 pounds or so packed onto my butt and thighs. It’s not evenly distributed, it’s not pretty, it’s just fat. There’s the 7.5 pounds in each thigh that has no business being there, the 10 extra pounds hanging onto my butt for dear life. All right, there’s the extra 7 or 8 extra pounds in my belly. Oh yeah, I can’t forget the extra 2 or3 in my upper arms, aka bat wings. Now that I’m looking, I’ve got that spare tire thing squeezing out of the bottom of my bra. (Let’s see 7.5 + 7.5 + 10 + 7 + 2 + 2 + . . . yep, that’s about 25, give or take) How in the world did this happen? Let me give you an example.

Last evening after I had gorged myself sitting in front of the TV I told myself, tomorrow is THE day. I’m gonna get up early, exercise, eat right – I’m going to lose weight!!! Morning comes – I’m tired and don’t want to get out of bed, especially to exercise. I lay there thinking to myself; I’m not really THAT fat, am I? Nah, I can still get into those dress pants. There is the fact that I’ve recently bought new pants for work in a bigger size to accommodate my big butt, but let’s not start the day on a bad thought, eh? Forget the pants. Think about . . . hey, what’s for breakfast? I can’t work out without food in my belly, can I? That’s a bad thing, isn’t it? I don’t want to pass out sweating like a pig during my workout because my blood sugar level is too low. Horror upon horrors! What if my husband had to call EMS to revive me? I’m sweaty, I’m grubby, I’M FAT!!! No, we can’t have that, so I go to the kitchen and try to decide what to have for breakfast. While I’m looking for something that sounds good to eat, I hear the bag of m&ms in the snack cupboard calling me by name. (Willie... Willie, we’re in here!) Being the good wife that I am, I don’t want the m&ms to wake my husband, so I eat them just to shut them up. I’m only thinking of my husband you understand.

While I’ve got the cupboard door open I decide to clean up the mess that I made last night when the bag of cookies I was trying to open broke apart and spewed cookies everywhere. I get the cloth out to wipe the crumbs up, but what’s that behind the potato chips – a cookie? It’s probably stale, having sat out all night so I eat it. I can’t waste it; my mother would kill me for wasting food. Oops, when I shove the chips aside to get to the cookie, the clip comes off and potato chips fall all over. I scoop them up and pop ‘em in my mouth. I would have put them back in the bag, but what with my hands touching all that stuff in the cupboard, I don’t want to take the chance that my husband would get any germs from my dirty hands and fall ill. What kind of wife would I be if I allowed that?

As I’m putting the securely closed bag of chips back in the cupboard, I find the Twinkie I’d been looking for last night and couldn’t find, thus the whole cookie incident. Well, dang – it’s the last twinkie and if I don’t eat it my husband will and he’s really getting chubby so what can I do? Now it’s not as though I really want the Twinkie, but for my husband’s sake and being the good wife that I am, I eat it.

I look at the clock. Holy smokes, where did the time go? I have got to get myself around for work. No time for a good workout, no time for a good breakfast. I’ll just grab a Pop Tart or two on my way out the door. Whew, this losing weight thing is not easy! It’s hard work. I’m already worn out. I think I’m going to have to wait until tomorrow and try again. I’m tellin’ ya, this is gonna put me over the edge.

Looking for an affordable gift with a personal touch? You can find the best gift you will ever give without having to drive a single mile. No need to wait in line at the local department store, surf the web for hours or pay outlandish prices for a gift that is “all the rave”. In fact, the greatest gift of all will not cost you one red cent. This season give the special senior in your life a gift he/she will not soon forget. Give the gift of TIME.

The hustle and bustle of the season is upon us. So much to do, so many people to see, how will we ever finish everything in time? With demands pushing, pulling and speeding us along it is hard to remember that many seniors are lonely during the holidays.

They sit quietly as the next generation begins the annual struggle. Wishing there was a demand being placed on their time. An event or errand that has to be completed or the holiday just won’t be the same.

We all know that time passes and generations change but how quickly we forget those who do not demand our attention. The one’s that once took the time to teach us to tie a shoe or ride that shiny new bike

This holiday give the gift of time to the special seniors in your life. Here are a few ideas that have been proven to put a smile on the faces of everyone involved.

GIFT CERTIFICATES No, not the kind that will buy an item in the store. These certificates are hand-made and include items such as a game night, a Saturday afternoon outing or a night of BINGO. Be creative, it doesn’t matter what the certificate is for, what you are really giving is your time.

BE A SANTA ’S HELPERVisit your elderly neighbors and offer to do any outside chore that needs to be done. Even if you are not taken up on your offer it will be appreciated. Remember, seniors often do not ask for help. Only by you taking the first step will this be successful.

BE A CHAUFFEURMany seniors would love the opportunity to purchase gifts for the important people in their lives but lack the ability to go shopping on their own. Whether they are unable to drive or just can not handle the crowds, your offer to drive them may be just what they are looking for. Why not keep the gift going after the holidays and make it a regular visit to the grocery store?

FEED THE BIRDSIt may seem a bit corny but many seniors love to spend time enjoying the outside. Feeding the birds is a wonderful past time but many will not

spend money on anything as trivial as bird seed or day-old bread. A large bag of bird seed or a gift certificate to the local bread store will give them hours of enjoyment.

THE GIFT OF BEAUTYA regular visit to the beauty salon for a shampoo and set will do wonders for the self esteem of a senior. Not only will it make them smile when they look in the mirror, it will give them the opportunity to have a conversation with someone other than family.

CAN YOU SAY COOKIES!Have a baking day. Together you can make gifts to give to others and enjoy a wonderful day in the process. Here’s a suggestion... keep a pen and paper handy to write down any words of wisdom while you are baking. You never know what you will learn.

No matter what you decide is the best gift for the senior in your life, as long as you take the time to get to know them, it will be perfect.

Keep in mind our gifts are an indication of how well we know each other. Ask yourself which of these ideas would be the best for your grandma. If you don’t know the answer just pick up the phone and invite her to dinner. You can figure it out over a big pot of stew.

I am in the process of buying a new cell phone and am wracked by indecision. Android or iphone platform? Do I really want a new two-year contract or should I pony up for

an unlocked phone? Great camera or long battery life? Big screen or built-in keyboard? The options are endless. If I didn’t dislike my current phone so much, I’d probably just keep it. However, I really need a new one, and here’s my problem: I don’t want to make a final decision, because I’m afraid that I will regret it. If I choose an Android phone for Google’s killer navigation system, I will certainly regret not having the cool Apple apps. If I choose the awesome camera, I will no doubt curse the 4-hour battery life. What to do?

In the book The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less, psychologist Barry Schwartz talks about our modern dilemma of too many choices. It turns out that the more choices we have, the less satisfied we are with our decisions. If you’re a perfectionist, the decision making process will really eat away at you. He suggests that we consciously decide to live with the decisions we make and to realize that “good enough” really is good enough. No second-guessing and no regrets.

I’ve seen indecision and regret for years among parents, especially when choosing schools. When I went to school in the 70’s, there was one local school, and everyone in your neighborhood went to the same school. The only choice in my town was public school or Catholic school. Now you not only have the local public school, you may be able to move within your district or between districts. Charter schools and private schools may be options. Or you may have thrown in the towel and decided to home-school, with its own plethora of curriculum options. I have known a number of families who have moved their children multiple times as they

search for the “perfect” school. Some children are moved from one school to another, only to be moved backed to the first one a year later. A child psychiatrist once told me that, if possible, it is more important to provide a stable environment for the child than to search for the “perfect” educational setting.

I had to remind myself of this conversation

when my daughter started Young Fives this year. My sweet little girl, who has grown up with a rough-and-tumble big brother and a preschool class full of boys, wants nothing more than a best girlfriend. As soon as we walked into her classroom this fall, we saw boys: 15 boys and three girls. Right away I began to question my decision to send her to Young Fives instead of kindergarten, and then I wondered if all-day kindergarten wouldn’t have been better for her anyway. She could have gone to her brother’s school, which would have been easier for me! My brain started its cascade of doubt. Then I firmly decided to stop thinking about it. I would not second-guess this decision. She is now very happy in this class, adores her teacher, and has reunited with her BFF from preschool in swimming lessons.

Choices are definitely a good thing. I like the freedom to choose everything from what I want to make for lunch each day to how my children should be educated. Since reading about the paradox of choice, I have stopped second-guessing my decisions and learned to live with them. I finally understand that there is never a perfect choice, and I have become much happier with my decisions.

And the phone? Apple wins, and I’m sure the iphone will be “good enough” for me.
