OVS Baby Grape Solution, BGS 1000, is a conventional & proprietary soil-applied liquid fertilizer blend that we manufacture in McMinnville. We have had, and continue to have resounding success with it on young grape vines (we have a similar product for trees named OVS Tree Builder). One can fertigate via irrigation lines or spray onto the vine row ground. BGS can’t be applied to green growing tissue due to some of its ingredients. BGS 1000 is a source of plant available Nitrogen, Phosphate, Potassium, Boron, Manga- nese, and Zinc. e blend is chelated with humic acids for extremely efficient plant uptake. Nitrogen will help with general overall growth. Phosphate will help with cell division & energy transfer. Potassium will help with sugar transport; ripening. Boron will help with fruit set and flowering. Manganese is an essential micronutrient required for photosynthe- sis. Finally Zinc with also help with overall growth & development. We recommend an application of 7.5 gallons per acre in a solution of 1 part BGS to 4 parts water. A 5 gallon pail of BGS 1000 concentrate costs $56.50. Bird Control.... Options, Options, Options!

! ere is nothing more frustrating than watching your hard work and investment being destroyed by birds. Watching as your crop is stolen and damaged by birds is enough to make even the coolest customer annoyed. Probably the biggest loss from birds in blueberries is not always the feed-ing, but the fruit birds knock on the ground when they go in and out of the eld. ! is is less of a problem in grapes and cherries because the fruit is held more tightly on the plant. Regardless of the crop bird damage can be a real loss for any farm. ! ere are many control tactics available to minimize damage from birds. One of the simplest tactics is Mylar Tapes, Hawk Kites, and “fake’ predators, these low tech measures are in-expensive but prove to be modestly e ective over time. Another option is noise making deterrents such as Propane cannons and Bird Gard noise makers. Both of these prove to be e ective, one way to extend the e ective-ness of these is to rotate them throughout the eld and change the frequency and pattern of noises. One of the newest options for bird control is the Agrilaser bird deterrent system. ! e autonomic unit is programmable to run at di erent times of the day and di erent pat-terns through the eld. Last year we had the opportunity to see some of the units in action and so far the feedback has been positive. ! ese units may seem expensive at rst but when compared to crop losses and the area that can be protected the return on invest-ment adds up quick.

Contact your local OVS Ag Supplies Associ-ate or Agronomist, or visit our website for more information on any of the above bird control methods and don’t let all your hard work go to the birds.

Well, it has been a pretty good growing year to date for the local hop industry. Downy mildew infection has generally been modest, with perhaps more issues in the north valley. ! ere is general concern with powdery mildew as ag shoots have been found in several loca-tions. Growers should have applied preventative PM applications already. ! ere is concern w/ the PM bio-type that infects Cascade hops. Additionally, there are reports that hop plant material has been shipped from Michigan to the PNW. Michigan hosts mating type of PM which is not present in Oregon or Washington. ! e presence of mating type hop PM would make powdery mildew control much more problematic locally. Mites are just about ready to show up and are an annual concern. An application of Ultor for hop aphid also has e ect on mites. Regardless, rotation of miticide classes is important for resistance management and e" cacy of the application. Various viruses are a concern, as is the general hop market outlook.

OVS has a custom liquid fertilizer blending capability for the hop grower, as well as a cus-tom liquid lime and other minerals division. Additionally, we o er an experienced compre-hensive scouting and agronomic service, with pricing independent of or as part of our full line of agrichemicals and nutrients. Our team is committed to you the hop grower and your success. Anything less than this means we have not done our job.
