    Why Propers

s book provdes musc for the propers of the ass, whch arentegral to the structure of the lturgy and whch have been sungsnce the earlest centures. e entrance, oertory, and communonchants n ths book are for use n the ordnary form of the omante. e translatons of the antphons found n ths collecton arefrom the regoran ssal as publshed by Solesmes, and the salm

verses are taken from the evsed ral salter. You can nd thesetexts n atn n ther regoran muscal settng n the GradualeRomanum.

ow mportant are the propers n the ordnary form of the lturgy?in 1969, the Vatcans Conslum that released the new ass n theordnary form was asked a queston about the old prohbton of

sngng of propers at ow asses wth hymns: e unambguousanswer came back: at rule has been superseded. What mustbe sung s the ass, ts rdnary and roper, not somethng, nomatter how consstent, that s mposed on the ass To contnueto replace the texts of the ass s to cheat the people.

s s why the eneral instructon on the oman ssal ()speaks of addng decorum to the processons (entrance, oertory, and communon) by sngng the chants proper to them (44). Aerthe people have gathered, the ntrance chant begns (47).e

processon brngng the gs s accompaned by the ertorychant, whch contnues at least untl the gs have been placed onthe altar (74).Whle the prest s recevng the Sacrament, theCommunon chant s begun (87).

if we are to grant chant the man place at ass (41), the propersof the ass clearly need greater attenton. As Cardnal atznger

wrote n Te Spirit of Liturgy, the bblcal and lturgcal texts are

the normatve words from whch lturgcal musc has to take tsbearngs. owever, despte the frequent menton of ass propersn many documents, there has been a surprsng dearth of resources

avalable to sng the propers n nglsh, whch s a step towardsngng the ass nstead of just sngngatass.

e Simple English Propers provdes musc for the full lturgcalacton of these processons for sngers who have not prevously sungass propers. ey are desgned to be used wthout accompanment.ey are exble enough to be sung by a cantor alone or by a large

chor that can sng n unson n two octaves or be dvded nto hghvoces and low voces. e people are free to jon n but ths s notnecessary, for the propers of the ass belong prmarly to the chor.

    Te Structure

e sngng structure s as follows. Begn wth the antphon (thatsthe openng text and melody). A cantor ntones the antphon up tothe astersk (*) and then the rest of the chor or secton contnues.Antphons wthout an astersk are ntended to be sung by a cantoralone the rst tme wth the chor repeatng the entre antphonthereaer. if desred, antphons wth astersks can also be sung nfull by a cantor wth the chor or secton then repeatng the entreantphon. en the rst psalm verse s sung, whch s followed bya repetton of the antphon by the chor or secton. Contnue thsalternaton between the antphon and psalm as needed to cover thelturgcal acton, and end wth the antphon. e lory be on theentrance and communon, whch may be sung as the nal verse, stradtonal but optonal.

    How to Sing the

note n front of t (t looks somethng lke a stylzed F) and t marksthe ptch F orFa.

Just as wth the C and F on the keys of a pano or n any scale, thedstance of a half step separates that note marked by the clef from

the space below (whch s a B or an , dependng on the clef ). eremander of the scale follows from here just as on the pano. scan be easly played on the whte keys of the pano. r t can besounded out usngDoReMi syllables (most people knowDoReMifrom the move e Sound of usc).

e beauty of the four-lne sta (nstead of the modern ve lne

sta ) s that t presents all you need for sngng (the ve-lne sta sonly essental for nstruments). in addton, theDo doesnt have tobe xed on C. it can be any ptch you choose, provded you preservethe relatonshps between the notes that follow. s allows for totalexblty, n eect permttng any chant to start on any ptch.

ost chants n ths volume use a scale that falls mostly below the

clef. s allows you to nd the scale and the startng ptch by rstsoundng aDo orFa and movng downward:Do i La SolFa, orFa Mi Re Do. if you are lookng for a quck mental recall, thnk of Joy to the World. s tune begns wth ths descendngscale exactly. s one smple step wll orent you n where the halfsteps and whole steps are. (ere s only one accdental n chant: theBb or the e.)

e notes and groups of notes (neumes) used n ths book are few.e sngle square note (punctum) apples to word syllables andfollow the pattern of speech. ere are also groups of two derent

notes stacked on one syllable (podatus). e lower note s sungrst. if the notes go from hgher to lower on a sngle syllable, theycan be wrtten as a clvs. ere are also groups of three movng

notes on one syllable (torculus and porrectus). e melodcshape of these notes follows the rsng and fallng drecton of thenotes (the porrectus s not slurred, despte ts appearance).

    three notes sung consecutively

    torculus

three notes, the first two at either end of the diagonal

    porrectus

otes wth a lne over them (epsema) receve a slght lengthenng,

and the dotted notes that occur at the ends of phrases are heldslghtly longer n order to help brng them to a natural concluson.

ere are ve dvson markers that are used n chant notaton andn the . ese look somethng lke bar lnes n modern musc, butthey serve a very derent purpose. er purpose s to help breakup the text accordng to ts grammatcal structure and to provde

breaks or pauses n the melody, just as t would be spoken.

e largest dvson mark s the double bar ( ) whch s found onlyat the end of an antphon or at a conclusve dvson of a chant. e

double bar ndcates a complete stop n the musc. if verses are sungaer the double bar, a pause of a few seconds should be observedbefore proceedng on. e second dvson s the whole bar ( ) whch

marks the end of complete phrases n a chant. e whole bar usuallyconcdes wth a perod n the text, and a substantal rhetorcal

pause should be observed, just as n speech. e thrd dvson s thehalf bar ( ) whch breaks the text of a chant at ntermedate pauses.e pause at the half bar s bref and shorter than a whole bar, anda breath should always be taken. e fourth dvson s the quarterbar ( ) whch s the equvalent of a muscal comma. e quarter bar

dvdes sense unts n the text. Sometmes a breath s needed andsometmes not. A very bref pause should be taken at the quarterbar and the muscal lne should not be nterrupted but carry on na owng manner. e nal dvson s called the artculaton mark( ) whch s properly not really a dvson mark at all, but ndcatesa need for a very slght break n the sound; a slver of daylght. eartculaton mark s , despte ts appearance,

and a breath should never be taken for t. All that s needed s avery quck and delcate break n the musc, as we oen break n asmlar way n speech. if the artculaton mark presents problemsfor begnnng sngers or chors t may be better gnored.

How to Sing the Psalm Verses

e psalm tones are based on regoran tones and are craed towork seamlessly wth the nglsh language. e salm tones arefound at the end of each antphon. e psalm text s ponted to

permt the easy applcaton of the tone.

e psalm tones consst of two muscal lnes, whch are separated

by a barlne. e rst part of the tone s sung to the rst lne of apsalm verse, whch concludes wth an astersk. e second part ofthe tone s sung to the text that follows the astersk. Aer both partsof the tone are sung the tone s repeated n ths fashon as needed.

e begnnng of a verse s sung on the whte note, called the recitingtone. e talczed words or syllables at the end of a lne of textconcde wth the changng notes at the end of the tone, called the

termination. e bold word or syllable ndcates the nal note ofthe lne. if there are syllables that follow ths nal note, they aresung on ths nal ptch. (e excepton s the introt mode 1 tone,

where the nal syllable s sung on a descendng 3-note gure whchs broken up f any syllables follow the bold syllable.) When thereare three lnes of text, you wll see the mark for the ex (). erethe snger should not sng the termnaton, but just pause brey on

the rectng tone and then contnue sngng.

e chantng of the psalms s a smple but delcate art. e text ssung lghtly, n the manner of good speech, wth a slght emphasson word accents, just as you would speak them. At the begnnngof a lne you should sng wth a slght acceleraton, and at the endof the tone the sngng should relax and coast naturally to a rest. At

the astersk (*) there should be a short pause of one to two seconds.s keeps the psalm from beng rushed, adds a moment of reposeand reecton, and adds much beauty to the sngng of the psalms.

    Conclusion

if you are dscouraged at rst, stay at t. You wll learn quckly. emore you sng, the more expressve and drven your chant wllbecome. ach chant wll begn to take on ts own personalty overtme. As a nal remnder, never forget the purpose to chant: to

proclam the lturgcal text wth beauty and noblty.
