FortisBC Princeton employees Jason Earle, Clayton Vermette, Dave Barker (Keremeos) and Russ Biagioni are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 213, currently locked out by FortisBC. (Princeton employee Aaron Gould not in photo)

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW)Local 213 has been in bar-gaining with FortisBC since January of this year.

On Wednesday, June 26 FortisBC locked out 240 of it’s employees.

The main issues involved in the dispute are wages and control over job descriptions.

IBEW 213 filed strike notice on March 13 and began withdrawing non-essential services in mid-May. The services withdrawn were those such as using computers or doing paperwork. Work was completed, but documentation was not.

An essential services agreement was worked out with the company and the union in May.

Joyce Wagenaar director of communications for FortisBC said, “When job action escalated, we felt there were distraction issues. The company has

activated the Essential Services Order which sets out service and staffing levels to ensure service and reliability for our customers.” She also stated that the contact center employees were not affected and that crews would respond to power outages.

Customers can reach FortisBC through the contact center at 1-866-436-7847

“We are sorry for any inconvenience to the public,” says Rod Russell who represents the locked out employees. “It really is unfortunate.” He also noted that some employees are currently giving notice and leaving the company.

The union presented their final offer in late April. The company then put its proposal to the workers in a final vote. Of the 90.4 percent of members who cast a ballot, 88.4 percent rejected it. “It’s a very clear message,” said Russell. “I’m sure that they (the company) think that they are right, but I know we feel we are. We are looking for a fair and reasonable deal,” he said.

VICTORIA – Call it the Beach Blanket Budget.Despite having to campaign once again to win

a seat in a byelection, Premier Christy Clark has ordered the legislature to sit without her through most of July to pass the budget that was tabled before the election.

This rare summer session ensures a couple of things. First, there will be less time for real financial results to contradict the rosy predictions made by Finance Minister Mike de Jong in February.

Second, it ensures that there will be minimum public attention paid to the deliberations, as people focus on their summer vacations and put the busi-ness of running the province aside again.

B.C. Liberal house leader Mike de Jong insists there has been no decision made on whether the legislature will sit again in the fall. The standard schedule, put in place under former premier Gordon Campbell, calls for MLAs to assemble in October and November, to consider legislation, after a spring devoted to the budget and ministry spending.

This was a serious reform that went along with four-year scheduled elections. But Campbell soon abandoned this noble approach, with fall sessions dwindling to a few days to deal with urgent issues or disappearing altogether.

I expected Clark to reverse that after she led the party to vic-tory in May and consigned the Campbell era to the history books. Open, accountable government and all that.

So why the summer session? I’m inclined to agree with NDP house leader John Horgan, who meets privately with de Jong in his role of government house leader to thrash out schedules. Here’s Horgan’s message to Clark and her government as he emerged from the latest meeting:

“You ran on a platform that you claimed you were ready to implement. And what we’re getting instead is, ‘let’s jam ’em in here

while the media’s on holidays, while people are at the beach thinking about other things. We’ll pass our bogus budget and then we’ll see you in February’.”

Is the budget accurate, or “bogus,” or somewhere in between? They’re always projections, so that can’t be determined until next year. But the proposal to keep the increase in overall spending to less than two per cent, with nearly all the increase going to health and education, is difficult to accept.

During his time, Campbell topped the Fraser Institute’s ranking of most fiscally responsible pre-miers, limiting spending growth to 4.4 per cent. During those same years, average provincial eco-nomic growth was only 4.1 per cent, meaning that

under the supposedly tight-fisted, tax-cutting Campbell, govern-ment continued to grow to more than 20 per cent of gross domes-tic product.

Clark has indicated several times since her surprise election win that she intends to make government smaller. That’s the difference between her “core review” of government programs and the one conducted by Campbell in the painful first years of his mandate.

This is why I mentioned last week that one of the more signifi-cant instructions given to Clark’s cabinet ministers was to examine turning the Liquor Distribution Branch into a separate corpora-tion with its own board of directors.

That in itself may slightly increases the size of government. But it could be a preliminary step to selling the whole thing off and reducing the government’s role to taxing and regulating booze sales.

You can imagine how that would go over with the NDP, with former liquor store union boss George Heyman among the loud-est opposition MLAs.

This is the kind of change that should be debated in public, not by press release.

Mystery Person; Who is this? Check next weeks Spotlight for the answer.1) Here is your man if you need a French translation. 2) His wife and he both have first names starting with J. 3) She and he are both proficient on computers. Answer to the previous week: Rob, Mike, Shane, Trevor, Kurt, Tyson, Jamie, Allison, Linda, Barb, Jackie, Rob, Ryan, Jason, Charlene, Lisa, Karen, Theresa, Barb & Korrina.

The results of the May 14 B.C. election had barely been confirmed when opposition parties and political observers like Black Press’s Tom Fletcher made note of big raises instituted by the B.C. Liberals for key politicial staff.

Ministerial assistants’ salaries ceilings increased from $94,500 to $105,000, the top salary for the premier’s chief of staff increased from $195,000 to $230,000, and the premier’s deputy chief of staff’s salary rose from $144,000 to $230,000.

So much for the Liberal party’s preelection rheto-ric regarding the party’s priority to control spending.

The move may prove to be ill timed, however, as the public could show their discontent through the ballot during Premier Clark’s upcoming July 10 bye-lection in Westside - Kelowna

It will also be interesting to see what the Liberals prioritize in their upcoming core review.

It will be even interesting at the local level, since newly elected MLA, former Regional District Okanagan Similkameen Chair and Penticton Mayor Dan Ashton has been appointed Vice Chair of the Cabinet Working Group on Core Review.

Will the core review cut services to the average B.C. resident while ignoring these generous, unwar-ranted, appointed perks and salaries to government officials and insiders?

Ashton advanced himself politically out of a per-ceived reputation for fiscal responsibility during his years as Penticton mayor. Will he and the review com-mittee now conveniently overlook these recent top pay increases, that were not part of the Liberal elec-tion platform, for the sake of political expediency?

Without a good deal of public backlash, it would seem to be a definite possibility.

Public reaction needed

L to r: Randy McLean, Richard White, Dean Johnston, Bill Rotheisler, Corry Oerlemans and Gary Fraser.Bill Rotheisler has been hired as general manager and head coach for the Princeton Posse.

PRINCETON, B.C. - June 27, 2013—On June 25, 2013 at the Princeton Posse Annual General Meeting, Dean Johnston stepped in as the new president with an entirely new board, dedicated to establishing the Posse as a cornerstone in the community.

The Board of Directors aren’t the only fresh faces with the Posse. Bill Rotheisler, who was part of Team Pacific that won a bronze medal at the 2011 U17 World hockey Championship, is the new General Manager and Head Coach of the Princeton Posse.

Rotheisler spent last season coaching the Comox Valley Glacier Kings of the VIJHL. With the short amount of time that Rotheisler and his coaching staff had, they built a strong team that had their first playoff sweep in the franchise’s history, won the North Island Division and com-peted at the Cyclone Taylor Cup. They changed the culture of the dressing room and built a team that the community bonded with.

Prior to his season with the VIJHL, Rotheisler spent five seasons between Pursuit of Excellence

Hockey Academy and the Okanagan Hockey Academy.

During his three seasons with the Okanagan Hockey Academy/School, Rotheisler was an inte-gral part of the management and operations as program director, coordinator, and writer for the International Development Tournament.

Rotheisler is the youngest coach to attend the biennial NCCP High Performance 2 seminar — the highest level coaching certification program in the country and has also attended as a presenter. “I am humbled and honoured that I will be a part of the Princeton Posse family: An organization that has always turned heads with passionate fans and strong community bond. The first game that I ever coached in the KIJHL, on an interim basis, was in the Princeton & District Arena as a member of the Summerland Sting. I remember thinking to myself that this would be a great place to coach and call home one day.”

Rotheisler is looking forward to working with the new Board of Directors and the community to continue to build the passion and excitement that Princeton has for their Posse.

CAPRICORN: Capricorn, your focus on the future may be making it difficult for you to see what is right in front of you. Take stock of your immediate future and you’ll be glad you did.

AQUARIUS: Aquarius, expect to tackle many things on your to-do list this week. While you are feeling motivated, keep going. You may accomplish a lot more.

PISCES: Pisces, sometimes you will have to make sacrifices, and this week you may find yourself putting others first. You thrive at being selfless.

ARIES: You don’t need to hide behind a mask, Aries. Let your true feelings be shown and you will gain more respect for having done so. If you meet resistance, try again.

TAURUS: Don’t worry about a missed opportunity this week, Taurus. You will get a second chance and make the most of that well-deserved opportunity.

GEMINI: Gemini, you will need to find ways to sure up a plan of action before you can start to move forward. You may want to seek advice from Pisces.

CANCER: Cancer, keep trying even if you feel as though your efforts are getting you nowhere. Eventually you will make a breakthrough, and all that hard work will pay off.

LEO: Leo, take care of a few things early in the week and then enjoy some much-needed and well-deserved rest and relaxation. Put travel at the top of your to-do list.

VIRGO: Virgo, you may experience a scare, but it will be short-lived and you will recover quickly. The rest of the week may prove uneventful, but do your best to stay busy.

LIBRA: Libra, you may be second-guessing an earlier decision that you now find isn’t working out exactly as you had hoped. It is not too late to take a different path.

SCORPIO: Scorpio, spend some quality time at home if you have been away for awhile. Time spent with your loved ones will reinvigorate you and put some hop back in your step.

SAGITTARIUS: Sagittarius, step out of the shadows for a bit this week to get the praise and recognition you deserve. There’s no shame in accepting the gratitude of others.

FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY

Experimenting with international cuisine is one of the joys of cooking. The chance to whip up a taste of a faraway culture in the comfort of your own kitchen is an opportunity many home cooks find too good to pass up.

As many cooks discover, some cuisines combine elements of various cultures. India, for example, was colonized by the British, Dutch, French and Portuguese, and that mingling is reflected in Indian cuisine. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Anglo-Indian Beef Stir-Fry” from Ruta Kahate’s “5 Spices, 50 Dishes” (Chronicle Books), which is among the more popular Anglo-Indian dishes.

Anglo-IndIAn Beef StIr-fryServes 4

1 pound beef sirloin or any other tender cut of beef, sliced against the grain into paper-thin slices

1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar

11/4 teaspoons salt, divided3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric, divided2 medium russet potatoes6 tablespoons canola oil, divided1 medium yellow onion, halved and thinly

sliced (about 11/2 cups)11/2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger (about

3-inch piece)1/4 teaspoon cayenne

To make slicing beef easier, freeze it for about 20 minutes. Or even better, have the butcher slice it for you at the store. Rub the beef slices with the vinegar, 1 teaspoon of the salt and 1/2 teaspoon of the turmeric and set aside.

Bring the whole potatoes to a boil in lightly salt-ed water to cover. Boil them for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat, cover, and let the potatoes sit in the hot water for 10 minutes. The potatoes will be perfectly

cooked without being mushy. Drain, peel and cut into 6 to 8 wedges each. Coat the wedges with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon turmeric and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Set aside.

Heat 3 tablespoons of the oil in a large wok and fry the onion and ginger until softened slightly. Add the cayenne and then the marinated beef. Stir-fry over high heat until tender, 5 to 8 minutes. Cooking time will vary depending on which cut of beef you’ve used and how thinly you’ve sliced it. If you

find that the beef is not tender enough

for you liking, add 1/2 cup water, cover, and cook on medium-low heat until the beef is very tender, about 15 minutes more.

Meanwhile, heat the remaining 3 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet and gently fry the potato wedges over low heat until golden brown and crisp. Serve the stir-fry garnished with the potato “chips.” For a true Anglo-Indian stir fry, serve tomato ketchup alongside. PC137288

Wasn’t that a party! - Princeton Racing Days celebrates 45th yearThe Royal Canadian Legion began the week-

end festivities by hosting their Legion Week celebration on Friday, June 28.

Legion Ambassador Candidate Destiny Earle joined Legion members Doreen Poulsen and Sharon Paterson at an information table where they informed people about the Legion, how to join and take part in it’s events. They also invited people in for the free barbecue provided for the afternoon. A dance was held Friday evening with music provided by Ian Elko.

At 6 p.m., the annual Rotary Parade lead by the Royal Canadian Legion Colour Guard started out Vermilion Avenue and on to Bridge Street.

Fifty-five entrants paraded for residents and visitors throwing candy, T-shirts and the odd water balloon. Entries included locals, visiting Royalty and floats by the 10, 20, 30 and 50 year class reunions.

First prizes went to Vermilion Forks Fitness, Princeton Family Services, China Ridge Riders and the Royal Canadian Legion. Second place ribbons were awarded to Cooper’s Foods, Liv-ing Water Community Church, Little Britches Rodeo and to the Crimson Tine Players. Third place ribbons went to Young Life, Bree Lindley and the Princeton & District Agricultural Fair.

After the parade, the Princeton Ambassador Coronation was held at the Riverside Centre. - (See story page 1 of this issue)

On Saturday the festivities began with the Lions Club Annual Pancake Breakfast.

Fern and Ed Goudreau, Anne and Wayne Passey, Gerry St Laurant, Dave Shalanski, Guy Le Comte, John Sandness, Johanna McDonald and Elaine Miller along with helpers; Bob and Colleen Hughes served up 165 breakfasts of pancakes, sausages and tea/coffee.

“It was a great turn-out,” said Lions president Dave Shalanski, “definitely more than last year.”

On Saturday afternoon, the festivities carried on with the 45th run of Princeton Racing Days.

Although the races were delayed by approximately two hours due to an accident with the gate, the crowd hung on and the races began.

By the time the second race was run, Harvey the volunteer who was injured had returned to the track, ready to get back to work. (He was made to rest the remainder of the day.)

Eight races were run, parimutuels packed, and the concession and refreshment garden stayed busy right up till the end of the evening dance with music by Dale Seaman and Highway 97.

Volunteers reported that this had been the “biggest crowd they had seen in a few years.”

“Amazing,” is the word Racing Days president Karrie Crucil used to describe the day. “Everyone was happy—the owners, the trainers, jockeys, volunteers and the public,” she said, everybody had a fantastic day.”

Mrs. Edith Currie was present this year to present the Cur-rie Cup to the winner of the Currie Memorial Derby won by

“Alaughatlast” - owned by James Strachan and ridden by Sarah Fredrick. The Currie Cup was donated by Brian Anderson to honour Doug and Laurie Currie, founding members of Princ-eton Racing Days.

The 42nd run of The Similkameen Cup was won again this year by local horse, “A Lasting Peace” - owned by June Dunte and ridden by Robert V. Skelly. The short by heavy rain storm during the final race did nothing to slow the race and “A Lasting Peace” took the win with ease.

The Similkameen Cup Sweepstakes tickets presented by Princeton Rotary were a hot item during the races as well. The majority of the winners were locals; Janet Banks - $200, Diane Riley - $1000, Roberta Ihler - $300 and $100 each won by Joanne Kovacks, Monty Montgomery, Russ Biagion, Inez Wilkinson and Gloria Gibson.

Weekend celebrations continued through to Sunday with the reunions, the golf tournament and Canada Day fun at the Princeton Museum on Monday followed by a cooling down, fun swim at the Princeton Centennial Pool.

I’ve been following my daughter’s posts on Facebook these days. She is attending an international graphic designers conference in San Francisco, USA and was asked what “her story” was and began her answer with the statement, “I grew up in Winnipeg...” and then trailed off, thinking that it was a boring beginning with no hook to catch the listener.

I must disagree. Believe me, anyone who was raised in Winnipeg has an impressive story as does anyone born in Princeton or Cambodia or France or anywhere in the world.

I too grew up in Winnipeg and was living there during the sixties and seventies and yes, I remember the summer of love with it’s hippies, flowers and benign pot propelled wackiness. I also had the privilege to attend an extraordinary exhibit at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Many of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings had been brought over from Europe at great expense. I was awestruck when I stood before each painting, electrified by the depth of energy and passion in each one. I owned a tiny, insipid copy of one of his sunflower paintings that hung on the wall at home and I had been fascinated with his life story, reading everything I could get my hands on. Then, there I was in front of the real deal, and the stories I had read about Van Gogh added great power to the work. All that torment and angst were painted in violent strokes of amazing colour. It was a transform-ing experience for me and I suppose you could say it became part of my story and was instrumental in developing maturity in my appreciation of art.

I believe that where we are born and raised makes an indelible imprint on us. We are

put together like a jigsaw puzzle of sights, sounds, smells, feelings and impres-sions from our past. Many winter nights while walking home in Winnipeg I saw aurora borealis, heard the sound that snow makes at -40 Fahrenheit when you tread on it in grey leather moccasins from Birt’s Saddlery, smelled spring arriving and felt the warming breeze. Those memories are entangled with the Van Gogh exhibit, the evening I watched Margo Fontaine dance at fifty-seven years of age and the concert where Yehudi Menuhin played Beethoven’s violin concerto. Oh, I don’t forget the swarms of mosquitoes and wasps with their stings and all the other buggy annoyances, and the terrible humidity on a hot day that leads to a spectacular thunderstorm with stinging hail in late afternoon.

I believe that the sensory and emotional experiences involving nature and our interaction with it or lack thereof are so very important to a human’s developing story. We all have unique combinations of these experiences and that gives us endless material for telling. Our particular culture is the other

half. If we are involved in the arts, it is doubly important that we realize this. If a person is an art appreciator, you can bet that person wants to know the artist’s story. And if you are the artist, then to make art with integrity and depth of meaning, you need to claim yours with confidence and tell it through the language of art whether you are writing, painting, sculpting or composing and playing music. We humans are story lovers and story tellers and there are many ways to tell. More importantly, we must know that we all have a story that has value, uniqueness and relevance. So what’s yours?

We all have a story to tell and a unique way to tell it—what’s yours?
