Books...are only the beginning
December 2013 - January 2014
Looking For Something Fun To Do In December?
Community Groups Donate to the Library
The Library recently received a very generous mone-tary donation from The Friends of the Simi Valley Library to support our programs and increase the size of our collections. The Library also received a very generous donation
from The Busy Hands Garden Club for the purchase of twinkling lights to enhance the Rose Garden patio dur-ing evening hours. The Library greatly appreciates the continuous support of these two fine organizations and looks forward to continuing our partnership!
TALK TIME COMES TO SVPL
Talk Time is an informal conversation practice program for native and
non-native English speaking adults. It provides a safe and relaxed envi-
ronment in the library for these individuals to practice their speaking
and listening skills. This program provides an excellent opportunity to
meet new people and learn about other cultures!
We are looking for adult volunteers to work with library staff and facil-
itate conversation among those who attend Talk Time. Commit to just
one session per week. Bilingual, multilingual are especially needed.
Mastery of the English language required.
Tuesdays, beginning January 14th.
1st and 3rd Tuesdays: 10:30-11:30am
2nd and 4th Tuesdays: 4:30-5:30pm
If you are interested, contact Jodi Regan,
This is an excellent way to help your community!

Book Reviews for Adults by Derek Stalcup, Adult Services Librarian
The Book of Human Insects by Osamu Tezuka
This excellent manga geared towards adults that fol-
lows prodigy Toshiko Tomura, a twenty-something
who’s already an established international actress and
writer. Underneath the veneer of good looks and talent
lies a being who only knows how to survive by emu-
lating her lovers and murdering those in her way.
Toshiko surrounds herself with talented men, learns
their profession, and then leaves them in ruin as she inches up the social
latter.
Nowhere Men Vol. 1: Fates Worse Than Death by Eric Stephenson
COMING SOON!
Imagine a world where scientists are looked at in the
same light as rock stars and cultural producers… imag-
ine Nowhere Men. Dade Ellis, Simon Grimshaw, Emer-
son Strange, and Thomas Walker are the scientists who
helped push forward a new enlightenment with huge
leaps and advances in science and technology. Forming
World Corp., the scientific “super group” once revered
the world over, has now put the bottom line and progress
at any cost above what they once stood for when a group of employees
quarantined in secret space station goes missing. Clues of where the em-
ployees landed are slowly reemerging… but they have all changed. No-
where Men Vol. 1 collects issues 1-6 of current comic.
Spotlight on SVPL Volunteers Meet Chanal Nualsumlee By Jodi Regan, Volunteer & Community Outreach Coordinator
Chanal Nualsumlee is a student at Santa Susana High School and started volunteering here three weeks after we opened. She began shelv-ing and sorting books. In October she added “Homework Helper”, assisting elementary school children after school.
Chanal enjoys books! She loves, not only read-ing them, but organizing them on the library’s shelves. She thinks the library is a nice envi-ronment and spends as much time as possible here. On many days, she and her friends can be found in the Teen Lounge, working on a pro-ject or studying for a test.
Chanal also likes helping children. She recently had the chance to help a Thai child who doesn’t speak much English with his homework. Chanal moved to the United States from Thailand her-self when she was very young so knows first-hand the difficulties of learning a new language.
Chanal plans on attending college and then pursuing a career helping people on an interna-tional level either with UNICEF or the United Nations. We are very happy she is part of our Volunteer Team!
Celebrate Computer Science Education Week with Robot & Science Presentation and Workshop
Join the Simi Valley Public Library on Saturday, December 7 from 2-4:30pm in the Community Room, as we cele-brate Computer Science Education Week (CSEW) with a Robotics and Science Presentation and Workshop.
Attendees will explore Robotics and Video Game Design. Presented in partnership with Sandbox Computers for Kids, learn about innovative robotics solutions by 9-14 year olds to protect people during volcanoes and wildfires. Then build your own robot or design your own video game in a workshop for students, grades K through 12. Discover the magic and unravel the mystery of computer science.
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is the world's most popular robotics & science competition for school students aged 9-14. 2 FLL Teams (Merpeople & Vulcan's Cranes), mentored by Sandbox Computers for Kids, Inc., spent months researching and getting their re-search findings and proposed solutions evaluated by professors (from UCLA & University of Hull, UK) and professionals (VC Fire Dept & Medtronic). Learn about their innovative solutions to protect people during VOLCANOES and WILDFIRES from 2-3pm.
Then try your hand at building robots and designing video games. Kids will explore hands-on Computer Programming & Robot Build-ing. The goal is for kids to demystify computer science and unravel the magic for themselves in this free, 90 minute workshop, with help from Sandbox facilitators. Kids will build video games, robots and applications from 3-4:30pm.
Sandbox is a local organization with a mission to make computer education fun, relevant and accessi-ble for children. For more information, visit http://sandbox4kids.com. Space is limited. Register online. www.SimiValleyLibrary.org
