Answers to Market DemandsDigitalization is revolutionizing our economy and business models, both in large and medium-small sized compa-nies. To address new market challeng-es, manufacturers need to significantly reduce their time-to-market, while maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency.

Job shop supervisors want a smart way to organize daily production, in order to increase productive time and opti-mize resources; they also want to provide operators with all the informa-tion they need to do their job fast and with no mistakes.

MES/MOM overviewSiemens helps manufacturers become Digital Enterprises by enabling them to digitalize and integrate their entire industrial value chain through Manu-facturing Execution System (MES)/Manufacturing Operations Manage-ment (MOM) solutions.

Within the global MES/MOM portfolio, Siemens also offers solutions for small

and medium-sized manufacturers who need to streamline production, increase productive time and optimize resources through the effective alloca-tion and monitoring of assets, resourc-es and labor while minimizing costly IT consulting services and reducing the impact on HW infrastructure require-ments.

Siemens’ MES/MOM OOTB package is an intuitive and easy-to-use system ad-dressing most common manufacturing usage scenarios with minimal require-

ments. Moreover, through interaction with APS, small and medium-sized manufacturers can obtain - within one single system - a complete approach to improving manufacturing operations performance, consolidating the man-agement of production execution, sequencing, and end-to-end quality.

SIMATIC IT Unified Architecture Discrete Lean Cornerstones

Product overviewSIMATIC IT Unified Architecture Discrete Lean is an out-of-the- box MES that provides supervisors with WIP visi-bility and operators with the correct work instructions at the right time.

All included features are only a few clicks away from the user and are made available by means of configuration; code writing is required only to con-nect to third party DNC systems. The product is designed to have a very short learning curve and users do not require special IT expertise.

From an IT perspective, it requires min-imal effort: a straightforward setup procedure assists the system adminis-trator during installation, initial config-uration and connection to other systems as required, and in routine maintenance tasks, such as managing usernames and roles.

The system has minimal hardware requirements and can be downsized to a standard industrial PC.

Its user interface is fully web-based, meaning no installation is required and offering independence from client device operating systems.

Main functionalitiesSIMATIC IT Unified Architecture Discrete Lean is Siemens’ latest innova-tion for managing and organizing production in small and medium-sized factories.

Product engineers can very quickly provide the system with all master data necessary for production: from modeling the production environment with its machines and tools to defining products, their bill of materials and routing, including instruction docu-ments for operators.

A state-of-the-art user interface and intuitive procedure supports this activ-ity, while most of this information can be imported via plain text files. Super-visors can plan production by assign-ing work orders and dispatching them to the shop floor.

The system supports the whole range of manufacturing scenarios, ranging from repetitive production with enough flexibility to support product variants, to make-to-order environ-ments, to exceptional one-off item production.

Where required, it is possible to add SIMATIC IT Preactor and to connect the two systems seamlessly in order to schedule activity while taking resource

availability into account. Plus, when disruptions occur on the shop floor, the planner is informed and can react accordingly. Finally, the system offers supervisors WIP visibility, and allows them to check the status and percent-age of work order completion and the actual allocation of production ma-chines.

Whether on screens installed at the machine or work station, or at a kiosk serving a whole work center, or on mobile devices, SIMATIC IT Unified Architecture Discrete Lean assists oper-ators by displaying the correct se-quence and details of work operations to be performed, requiring confirma-tion and data entry to track progress and genealogy information.

Additional features include the ability to link the correct CNC part program with each operation, manage user skills and certificates and track tool usage.

The Benefits

• Increase productive time and opti-mize resources through the effective allocation and monitoring of assets, resources and labor

• Reduce scrap and waste by assisting operators and preventing mistakes

• Eliminate paper from the shop floor

• Provide a measure of productivity and quality, in order to make deci-sions about investing in new assets/resources

• MES is essential for compliance with traceability requirements imposed on specific industry sectors

• Very limited investment in IT skills.
