Friday 12 May
Term 2, Issue 6
Kia ora Koutou,
Welcome back to the new school term!
Huge thanks to all our families and friends who supported our reunification drill
last Friday. We realise drills like this can be an inconvenience, but appreciate your patience as we tested our systems. We hope this also proved to be a useful
test of your own family’s processes. We have identified some improvements we
can make to our reunification plan as a result of this drill, any feedback or
suggestions you have should be sent to: [email protected]
While it is really useful to practice for an emergency under ‘ideal’ conditions, it is
also worth considering some of the factors that we may not be able to control in
the event of a significant emergency, such as not having access to
communications outside the school. We can never pre-empt all possible
scenarios, however will always make decisions that are in the best interests of
keeping students safe (even though these may seem inconvenient in ideal
circumstances). Remember that we have plans for, and are prepared to care for
your children, for as long as is needed in the event of a significant emergency.
You can help us by ensuring that your own contact details and emergency pick up contact details are always up to date.
Tomorrow (Saturday 13th May), WREMO will be holding an open morning at
the school for anyone who wants to learn more about how you can get prepared
and help your community after an earthquake.

Silverstream School Strategic Review
Schools are required to consult on their Charter and Strategic Plan every 3 years.
This is an opportunity to reflect on our vision, mission and values, along with the
long term direction of the school to ensure that what we have in place is a good fit
for our families and wider community.
For Silverstream School this process will take place over the coming terms, with the first step being a survey form coming home in Week 5 for your initial thoughts.
There will also be a ‘focus group’ whanau evening on 7th June, for those that
prefer to discuss their thoughts face to face.
New Classroom Construction
There is already some fabulous progress being made on the construction site for the new classrooms. The
garage has been moved to it’s new location so that foundations and siteworks can go ahead for the new
build.
Students are enjoying watching the construction take shape and are showing us that
they can be very safe and responsible when playing around the work area. It is difficult
to predict completion dates when working over the winter terms, but at this stage we are
expecting the new space to be ready for use by the end of Term 3 / beginning of Term 4.
Cross Country
On Tuesday 9th May we had our School Cross Country. This year we had some extra challenges with
alterations to the course to negotiate our building work, and a reduced practice schedule.
With the sun shining, everyone dressed in their house colours and with plenty of parental support the
students participated superbly. We saw lots of our school values on display; excellence, participation
empathy, respect and fun!
Congratulations to all the students who made it through to the Inter-School Competition and to Miss
Sturmfels who won the staff race. The Inter School Competition will be on Sunday 21st May, and we
wish those competing well in their races. Below are the top 3 results for each year group. See our gallery section for some wonderful photos of the day…....

Upper Hutt Cluster Teacher Only Day - Friday 2nd June
Schools in Upper Hutt have been working together for a couple of years on a
project to increase students’ engagement in their learning.
On the 2nd June all Primary and Intermediate Schools in Upper Hutt will be
closed for the day. Teachers will be participating in a range of workshops throughout the day, hearing from experts and sharing what they are currently
doing in their classrooms. Taking a cluster-wide approach to our engagement
project means that local teachers and school leaders are able to learn from each
other, share successes and challenges, and ultimately increase the learning and
engagement of our students.
This approach also means that schools can access quality experts and presenters
at a reduced cost, as we have combined some funding across all schools.
YMCA will be open on this day.

Fundraising Team - Gard Bake Sale – Monday 22nd May
Earn House Points!
Monday the 22nd of May is the big Gard Bake Sale!!!
Get those kids in the kitchen over the weekend and bake up a storm. Remember we need cakes, slices,
biscuits, muffins and cupcakes. All the delicious things that are perfect for school lunchboxes.
Could you please bring your baking either on a disposable plate or in a plastic sealed bag to make it easier for sale. All food must be covered.
If you’re baking anything that is gluten free, it would be great if you could label it. Also if you’re providing a
cake, uncut is easier to sell.
If you could drop off your goodies either in the morning when you bring your children or before 2.00 pm so
they can be priced before the sale starts that would be much appreciated.
Thank you
