there is nothing like a dream to create the future –Victor Hugo (1802-1885) French novelist and poet

Our story begins with a dream …a dream shared by a group of close friends that has today turned into a movement of many, bringing about a positive change in the lives of entire communities. Today the Citizens Foundation (tCF) is shap-ing the future of hundreds of thousands of less-privileged children in Pakistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Set up in 1995, TCF is a professionally managed, non-profit organization that builds and operates schools in the urban slums and rural areas of the country where the children would otherwise never get an opportunity to go to a school. TCF strives to provide these children with not just an education, but beyond that. It aims to hone their personalities and provide every possible opportunity for them to progress in life and break the barriers of class and privilege that divide a nation.

today tCF is one of Pakistan’s leading non-profit organizations in the field of formal education.

As of 2013, TCF has established 910 purpose-built, operational school units in 97 towns and cities across Pakistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir and has on enrolment more than 126,000 children who would otherwise have been denied their basic right to an education. TCF has a philosophy of employing only female teachers in TCF Schools. Not only has this given employment to more than 6,300 women, it has resulted in a high rate of girls (almost 50%) being enrolled at TCF Schools. Almost 9,500 jobs have been created in the communities in which TCF operates.

TCF is a company Limited by Guarantee and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. TCF

is registered with the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai. It is also registered with the United Nations Orga-nization, the Charities Commission in the United Kingdom and as a tax-exempt charity in the United States of America and Canada. The TCF team is driven by a deep-rooted passion and empathy, and a commitment to excellence in an endeavor to create a meaningful and enduring change. Today, TCF’s graduates are making their alma mater proud by securing seats in renowned business, medical, engineering and IT colleges/institutes of Pakistan.

Among these achievers are Anum Fatima and Nadeem Hussain. Anum Fatima graduated from a TCF School and moved on to complete her Bachelors and Masters from the College of Business Management (CBM) in Pakistan. This year Anum was selected for the Summer Exchange Program from Harvard Business School and was declared the Grand Prize Winner amongst her class. At present, Anum is working on an education project for Pakistan at Convergence, a think-tank based in Washington DC.

Similarly, Nadeem Hussain, a TCF Alumni currently enrolled in his sixth semester at the Institute of Business Admin-istration (IBA) in the BS (CS) Program, has been selected for an intensive six-week program in the United States of America at the United States Institute for Student Leaders on Comparative Public Policy. The Program aims to provide undergraduate students a deeper understanding of how public policies are achieved in diverse cultures and political systems; helping the students enhance their leadership skills and develop acumen of political relations between the United States and Pakistan.

MaSHkooR RazaAfter thirty years of painting, Mashkoor Raza is an established signature in figurative abstract,

non-representational abstract and calligraphy. He began his career in the early 1980s, painting in the cubist style introduced by Picasso, slowly evolving into creating aesthetic

transparent impressions through which his images adopt varying shapes. Immaculate drawing and masterly strokes are the elements that stand out in all of his paintings. Whether creating abstract images of a woman and horse, varying shapes in

squares, circles and triangles or calligraphy, his exceptional energies combined with passion and patience, bring forth work that is sensuous as well as spiritual, vibrant on the one hand

and cool and harmonious on the other. Mashkoor has participated in many national and international group and solo shows from

Turkey, London, Germany, Canada and USA to the Far East, India and the Middle East.

alBeRt CRuellS Albert Cruells is a Catalonian artist who from his tenderest years, sought refuge in the

obsessive need to draw and paint. For him it wasn´t a vocation - it was simply what he did. That is how he has worked ever since, humbly and secretively, keeping the pleasure and

pain of painting exclusively for himself. Until 2009, Cruells production has remained out of the market, making him one of the few artists that is in possession of all his life’s work.

This eccentric painter has contributed the painting entitled ‘I have a dream’ to the exhibi-tion that seeks to express his optimism in a world that is obscured by harsh realities. “To

have birds on the head is a symbolic saying in Spanish, it means to have illusions, hope, dreams, fantasies, with the strength, of innocence. In essence, I want it to illustrate the need to fight

against reality as the first step to making dreams come true”. - Albert Cruells

kHaled al SaaiA Khaled Al Saai was born in Syria in 1970. He graduated from the University of Damascus in 1998 with his MA in Fine Art.For Khaled Arabic calligraphy is a medium for expressing feelings, thoughts, and sensations without becoming tied to the language. He deals especially with Arabic letters, their shapes, and their symbolic, religious, and musical origins. In his works, letters and words are not arranged on a straight or horizontal line but rather written densely or detached, superimposed or one below the other, interlaced or labyrin-thine in the imaginary space of the canvas. Letters interwoven in this way follow their own peculiar rhythm. He has participated in many international group and solo exhibitions throughout Europe and several Middle Eastern countries. Nominated as one of the best ten international callig-raphers in 1997, at the first International festival of Calligraphy in Iran, he went on to teach“Introduction to Arabic Calligraphy” at the University of Michigan, USA in 2002. He has also conducted several calligraphy workshops all over the world.

akBaR ali: Akbar Ali, clothing symbolizes identities that people are unwilling to shed. They hold on to them so tightly, wrapping them securely around themselves to display how they want to be viewed by outsiders. In other cases, individuals are strapped on to them, evenif they do not feel a connection to a particular identity. They are seen in limited ways through the garments they might wear. Akbar presents this phenomenon in paintings that show figures covered with material. He selects the colors of the fabrics partly from indexes inatlases that diagram religions according regions of the world—the international standard color for Christianity is red, for example. He also color codes from his own impressions—for example, blue is used toshow a calm personality. All of the people he clothes in fabric arepeople he knows on some level and, as such, he reveals his opinions on the kinds of people he thinks they are.The artist is a recent graduate of the miniature painting department at the National College of Arts in Lahore. For his thesis exhibition, he displayed paintings of isolated garments. Veils, for example, appear as if they are resting on a body; however, the individual is missing. In-stead, only the items of clothing are present suggesting that we make our judgments based on what is being worn rather than the people underneath them.

The process of layering, staining and mark-making allows me to connect with the earth, to leave behind all logic, all that I know with my mind, and explore new possibilities”. - Sara Riaz Khan

While Talpur executes his paintings in a random, playful manner, injected with humour, these images also offer a deep and serious comment about sociological and psychological problems within society.

MudaSSaR ManzooR: Manzoor uses the precise and exquisitely detailed ancient tradi-tional technique of ‘miniature painting’ to portray contemporary themes. This subtle yet intriguing body of work was formed in response to the continually changing outer world in both the context of his local vicinty in Lahore and further afield during his travels to new cul-tures. At these times he finds himself clinging to the essential components of life that remain consistent and unchanged by the social, political and cultural conditions.

a.q.aRiF: “History has always been a source of inspiration for me. I try to highlight its importance through my work.” The value of A.Q.Arif’s landscapes lies in the fact that it represents the spirit

of his soil and roots with an unrivaled intensity. Mughal Architecture, famous Sufi shrines or even newer structures that show inspiration from the history form the core of his work. There

is a lot of romance in his work - a romance with nature and light. Relying on his own energy he creates magnificence of an era gone by. The unconscious outcome is highly aesthetical

landscapes. A.Q.Arif is a modern painter in the sense that he uses modern techniques to execute his paitings.

Graduating from the Karachi School of Art in 1996, Arif has come a long way to the present status as a painter. He has extensively exhibited his works in Pakistan as well as in the UK,

Since his graduating thesis in 1983, he has been fascinated by installations, happenings and conceptual art, and soon tired of the art market’s demand for his detailed architectural pieces. Other artists tried to follow this particular style, every brick delineated in a manner that confronted reality with hints of surrealism. In spite of the commercial success of this area of work, Mansur returned to the conceptual language that few understood. Those who did understand, considered him to be the most innovative and promising artist of his generation. - Ali Imam

His passion for painting drew him away from the classical curvilinear lines, and he found his goal in Kufic calligraphy in its different forms and styles. Khalid Al Jallaf presents his works that blend symbolic Islamic architectural monuments such as Al-Hambra Palace, Andalusia architecture and the Islamic world mosques with the Arabic letter linking the art of calligraphy and Islamic architecture. Khalid usually takes his text and meaning from the Holy Quran, Sunnah and classical Nabati poetry. Khalid has participated in several solo and collective exhibitions in and out of the UAE. But on a more serious note, according to the artist himself; “the female figure along with the elements of a bird and an empty cage, symbolizes the freedom and the progressive attitude of the women in otherwise, conservative surroundings.” The revolutionary poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz has also become a significant element in his paintings. have a language of patterns. These patterns appear again and again in a certain order and pro-portion, which mirrors the truth relevant to all forms of life.”

In a rapidly expanding art world, Mona Naqsh holds a key position, best known for her beau-tiful compositions of flowers. Mona creates artworks in classical settings in which the flowers

seem to bloom and communicate with the viewer. Her source of inspiration was initiated by an appreciation of nature nurtured by an exquisite sequence of flower paintings executed, almost two decades ago, by her father, Jamil Naqsh,

Pakistan’s eminent modern master. In her own eyes, Mona is still striving to capture her father’s vision of natural beauty. He was her teacher and mentor. However over a period of

time, Mona has evolved independently establishing herself as one of the most distinguished painters of her generation. Her work has traveled widely to considerable acclaim.

I start painting and continue painting for many days when I feel the inspiration move me. I think and put a lot of effort in creating the first couple of paintings. Then as the rhythm starts to build

up, a great amount of flow and force is created and it is then that paintings are created effortlessly as if by themselves. Every line, brushstroke and the various splashes have their own significant

value and come out perfectly balanced automatically. The paintings that are created are what I consider my true paintings. The first few then seem to me like ‘Raag se phele Alaap’ (alaap is the

followed her passion for Art and Music and in 2005 formed “Poetic Strokes” aiming to promote Pakistani Art, in all its forms, to a larger international market. Ayesha has curated several exhibitions promoting the works of masters as well as promising young artists, the

most recent one in November 2012 when she brought together a calligraphy show of the renowned Emirati artist Khalid Al Jallaf and Pakistan’s calligraphy master, Ahmed Khan.

Ayesha, with a group of friends, also initiated “Salaam Pakistan”, an informal group of like-minded people with an objective to promote the softer, positive side of Pakistan. Under this banner, she helped organize several events including theatre, poetry/prose recitation,

musical tributes etc. She recently joined hands with Boulevard One, an event management company, in organizing a musical tribute to Rumi, Iqbal and Faiz by Tina Sani and Adeel Hashmi.

She has associated herself with various charitable organizations, specially the ones that support and promote Education. She has been part of various fundraising events: Art Auction for Flood Relief in Pakistan, Art Auction for Mawaheb, a non-profit art studio for young

adults with special needs etc. But the one she is most proud of is the trekking trip to Kilimanjaro in 2011 to raise funds for The Citizens Foundation.

Ayesha’s love affair with curating art, cherishing the written word and chasing musical notes are qualities ingrained in her soul. Dubai, with platforms like Art Dubai and Music Week, is truly the perfect backdrop for this purpose. Ayesha remains focused on her vision to

preserve and revive the rich palette of the arts in this ever-evolving city.
