About The KN 53

Power Switch – This knob controlsON/OFF/FOL/IDENT. Rotation of thiscontrol also adjusts NAV signal volume. The NAV voice can be heard when theknob is pushed in. When the knob ispulled out, the IDENT signal plus voicecan be heard.

Frequency Selection – By rotating theconcentric frequency selector knobseither clockwise or counterclockwise, youcan dial your desired operatingfrequency into the “standby” displaywindow. Use the larger knob to changethe MHz portion of the frequency display, and the smaller knob to change kHzvalues.

NAV Frequency Operation – The desiredoperating frequency if first entered intothe standby display. To activate, push thetransfer button to interchange thefrequencies in the “use” and “standby”display and turn the receiver to the newoperating frequency.

The Look Of Control

The KN 53 navigation receiver is styled tomatch our entire line of Silver Crown Plusavionics. The contemporary faceplate isdesigned for easy operation. The addedbacklighting of the bezel nomenclature, knobs and buttons helps you make fastand accurate frequency changes, especially during night flights. The knobsprovide a sturdy feel that offers an evengreater sense of precision.

Fast And Accurate

With this TSO’d system, tuning your radio– including all 200 VOR/LOC channels, from 108.00 to 117.95 MHz along with abuilt-in 40–channel Glideslope receiver isfast and accurate.

The KN 53 is the perfect fit for pilots whowant a panel comprising separateavionics components. Operating on anyDC current from 11 to 33 volts, it can beinterfaced with either the KI 204, KI 209or KI 209A using the VOR LOC converterindicators. Additionally, it will operate anHSI such as our KI 525A with a remoteKN 72 VOR/LOC converter. The KN 53also provides output to automaticchanneling of DME system and acomposite VOR output signal to operatea KI 229 RMI.

Useful Features

KN 53 offers innovative frequencystorage capability. For example, the “flipflop” NAV pre-select feature allows you tostore one frequency in the standbydisplay while operating on another, andthen switch between the two instantlywith the touch of a button.

Having both frequencies displayed at alltimes gives you immediate reference tothe stored channel. In addition, bothfrequencies are stored in a special circuitcomponent that doesn’t require batterypower. The unit remembers your selectedNAVV frequencies, even throughshutdowns of momentary powerinterruptions.

circuit boards provide trouble-freeconnections and ensure that all leads arefully insulated, protecting againstoverheating of components duringmanufacturing.

While other transponder manufacturerssolder their LSI chips in place, the KT76A’s encoder and decoder functions areprogrammed into a plug-in LSI chip, making repair as simple as pulling outone chip and replacing it with a new one. While the IDENT button is readilyaccessible on the front of the faceplate, aremote button can also be installed in aneven more convenient location, such asthe control yoke, to reduce pilot workloadduring busy approaches or departures.

It is this attention to detail that makes theKT 76A one of the most successfultransponders in general aviation history.

Proven Performance And Leadership

The KT 76A has established a worldwidereputation as the standard in ModeA/Mode C identification. Since itsintroduction, more than 165,000 KT 76and KT 76A transponders have beeninstalled worldwide.

The KT 76A is a Class 1A transponderproviding maximum performance ataltitudes up to 35,000 feet. This compactunit was among the first of our avionics toincorporate Large Scale Integrated (LSI)circuitry, reducing both weight and powerrequirements. And today, its designefficiency and rugged construction offera near-ideal balance of performance, reliability and value.

A Closer Look

All Mode A and Mode C transpondersperform the same functions: replying toradar interrogations, providing Air TrafficControl (ATC) with positive identification, and showing your ground speed on thecontroller’s radar monitor. With anencoding altimeter or blind encoder, thetransponder can also transmit altitude.

The KT 76A combines an extra-rigid,durable switchboard with easy access toall components. Unlike othertransponders the 76A can be opened likea book to expose every part and printedcircuit board—significantly reducingmaintenance costs and downtime. Insidethe KT 76A, “solder masked” printed

Panel-Mounted TransponderKT 76C

The Value Of Experience

Combining state-of-the-art technologywith ease of use, the KT 76C is the firstpanel-mounted Mode A/C transponder tooffer such features as sequential push-button squawk/code entry. Pressing asingle button lets you switch to any pre-set VFR code you choose. It operateswith both 14- and 28-volt electricalsystems and its extensive backlightingand bright gas discharge display make iteasy to read in all light levels.

The KT 76C drops directly into the samespace as an existing KT 76A* andreadily fits most stacks to replace othertransponders. Although cooling air isn’trequired, an optional forced-air inlethas been included to further extendservice life.

Matching our other Silver Crown Plusavionics, the KT 76C features acontemporary look. However, more thanjust style, the contemporary design helpsimprove the ergonomics and makes thistransponder easier to operate.

Backlighting of the bezel nomenclatureand knobs is standard, speedingrecognition and making night flying eveneasier. The use of ergonomic, high-reliability pushbuttons ease pilotworkload. A high-visibility gas plasmadisplay presents the selected code andpressure altitude. Automatic, microprocessor controlled displaydimming ensures readability under allcockpit conditions, from bright sunlight tototal darkness.

The Value Of Reliability

In today’s complex airspace environment,a transponder is simply a necessity. BothAir Traffic Control (ATC) and other TCAS-equipped aircraft rely on transponderreplies to determine your position. TheBendix/King KT 76C transponder is aradio transmitter/receiver which operateson radar frequencies. Receiving groundradar interrogations at 1030 MHz, itreturns a coded response of pulses toground based radar–or airborne TCASreceivers–on a frequency of 1090 MHz.

As with other Mode A/Mode Ctransponders, the KT 76C replies withone of 4,096 codes, which differ in theposition and number of pulsestransmitted. By “replying” tointerrogations, your KT 76C enables ATCand TCAS computers to display youraircraft’s identification, altitude andground speed on display screens. When the IDENT button is pressed, youraircraft will be positively identified to AirTraffic Control.

To ensure the visibility of your aircraft, both now and in the foreseeable future,we built the KT 76C to pass the rigorousHighly Accelerated Lifecycle Testing(HALT) program, subjecting it to rapidextremes of temperature, vibration andG-loading. Whatever your flying regimen, the KT 76C has already been there anddemonstrated it will keep working.

Nav/CommKX 155 & KX 165

In Tune And In Touch

Large, self-dimming, microprocessorcontrolled readouts and solid-stateelectronic tuning provide fast, accurateselection of all 200 NAV and 760 COMMfrequencies. Both the KX 155 and KX 165feature a built-in 40-channel glideslopereceiver. Both models are also availablewithout the glideslope.

The KX 165’s useful “radial” feature offersan instant readout of the current radial(from the “active” VORTAC station)digitally displayed in the “standby” NAVfrequency window. With both frequenciescontinuously available, it’s easy toperform a quick crossfix check by simplypressing the “flip-flop” button and notingthe displayed radial from each of the twoselected VORTACs.

Choice Of Capabilities

Although the two systems are virtuallyidentical in appearance, the KX 165 hasgreater capability. It offers someadditional features, such as the digitalradial readout, and comes with a built-inVOR/LOC converter, while the KX 155requires an external VOR/LOVCconverter.

Simple, Reliable, Capable

Simplicity, reliability and capability arekey characteristics of the KX 155 and KX165 NAV/COMM. These high-quality,time-tested systems make “stay ahead”frequency pre-planning effortless.

Both NAV and COMM frequency displaysincorporate the popular “flip-flop” pre-select feature. This function allows pilotsto set up en route or approach frequencychangeovers well in advance of theactual transition point of ATC handoffsequence, for true “stay ahead” flightmanagement.

By selecting the NAV and COMMfrequency in the “Standby” (STBY)display, pilots can “flip-flop” it into“active” status at the press of a button. This function may also be controlled froman optional remote-mounted switch. Both“active” and “standby” frequencies aredisplayed simultaneously. A non-volatilememory circuit stores all displayedfrequencies—through aircraft shutdownsor momentary power interruptions—without the need for battery power of anykind.

Nav/CommKX 155A & KX 165A

Convenience And Safety

Remote channel increment capability, with “flip-flop” tuning, allows you tochange channels without taking yourhands off the yoke—a feature of specialinterest to helicopter operators.

The stuck microphone alert is a safetyenhancement as well as a convenience;in addition to alerting you of a problem, the KX 155A or KX 165A Commtransmitters automatically shut down ifmicrophones are keyed continuously formore than 33 seconds.

Other features include a bearing-to-station mode and a radial from-stationmode. An internal Course DeviationIndicator (CDI) has been included forthose times when an external CDI isbeing driven by your GPS receiver, andthe systems now include a handyelapsed-time and approach timer.

The KX 165A features a built-in VOR/LOCconverter, enabling it to directly drive ahorizontal situation indicator (HSI). Thetimer function provides you with a“stopwatch”, ideal for timing a holdingpattern, a non-precision approach or anindividual trip leg. The timer can beprogrammed to count either upwards ordownwards.

Looks Smart

Matching our other Silver Crown Plusavionics, the KX 155A and KX 165Afeatures a contemporary design thathelps improve ergonomics and makesthese capable systems easy to operate.

A Tradition Of Quality

The KX 155A and KX 165A update theconcept of the combined navigation andcommunications radio for the 21stcentury. With such features asprogrammable Comm channels, supportfor 8.33kHz Comm tuning (KX 165Aonly), GPS QuickTune™, multipleoperating modes, remote channelincrement with flip-flop tuning and abuilt-in timer, the KX 155A and KX 165Amatch a sophisticated appearance withadvanced capabilities.

Enhanced Performance

In addition to their standard use—offeringboth active and standby navigation andcommunications frequencies—the KX155A and KX 165A incorporate a numberof valuable control features.

Program up to 32 Comm channels in anon-volatile memory circuit for readyrecall of the frequencies you use on aregular basis—no backup batteryrequired.

Pre-selected frequencies are stored ina non-volatile memory circuit, eliminating the need for backupbattery power.

When interfaced to the KLN 94 GPS,both the standby Comm and Navfrequencies can be selected andremotely tuned from the GPSdatabase, reducing pilot workload.

Comm Transceivers

The Coverage And Features

These units offer an 11 frequency storagecapacity, including ‘USE’ and ‘STBY.’ Allthree units’ memory channels areespecially useful for preprogramming thefrequencies you use most–ATIS, groundcontrol and tower—or the ones you userepetitively. All 11 frequencies are held innonvolatile storage so no batteries orexternal power is needed.

Other features include audio leveling toprovide a more consistent volume level. The stuck microphone indicator shutsdown the transmitter and flashes thedisplay if the mike is keyed for more thantwo minutes. There’s also a ‘ProgramSecure’ mode that lets you lock aspecific frequency into a specific channelnumber, so the program can’t bechanged from the panel.

The contemporary faceplate is more thana smart style. It’s helps improveergonomics, making these units easy tooperate. Backlighting of the bezelnomenclature and knobs are standard, making night use easier. Sturdier knobsgive you greater control with a moreprecise feel.

Better And Brighter

When it comes to aircraft systems, mostpilots have one request: Keep it simple. The KY 196A, KY 196B and KY 197Acommunications transceivers aredesigned to simplify operationaldemands. For component avionics, youcan’t make a better choice than our SilverCrown Plus COMM transceivers.

The 28-volt KY 196A delivers 16 wattsminimum transmit output power, supporting a frequency range from118.00MHz to 136.975MHz. Its 14-voltcounterpart, the 10-watt KY 197A coversthe same range to provide 760 COMMchannels. The 28-volt KY 196B takescoverage a step further, meeting theICAO EUR Region’s 8.33-kHz channelspacing requirements, offering a displayrange of 118.000MHz to 136.990MHzand providing a total of 2,280 channels.

These models combine great coveragewith exceptional usability. For example, the active frequency is clearlydistinguishable from the standbyfrequency, with both displayed inseparate, dedicated windows. Thisallows you to pre-select the standbyfrequency while you continue to use theactive frequency.

Optional remote mounted switches canalso be installed on your aircraft’s yokeor cyclic to facilitate frequencymanagement. These switches enable youto activate the “flip-flop” function or callup any of the unit’s nine pilot-programmable memory channels withoutrepositioning your hands.
