The New York State Report Card for the 2011-2012 school year was recently released by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Silver Creek Central School District continues to be a district in “good standing” in the areas of: English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and graduation rate. This means that the students made satisfactory progress toward the goal of proficiency. In grades three through eight, student performance is measured on a four-level scoring scale. At the high school level, the Regents Examinations are used to determine the degree of academic success.
In reviewing the report you will notice that our high school has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in all areas. AYP indicates satisfactory progress toward the goal of proficiency for all students. In ELA, mathematics, and science, AYP is determined by comparing the percentage of students tested and the performance of tested students against NYS defined standards. In graduation
rate, AYP is determined by comparing the percentage of students graduating against defined NYS standards.
Our elementary/middle level groups did not meet AYP in all sub-groups. The elementary/middle level met 10 of the 13 accountability measures. The reshaping of our Academic Intervention Services program (AIS) will provide a systematic approach to early intervention at all levels.
The link to the 2011-2012 School Report Card is: https://reportcards.nysed.gov/. You can also view it at our website by visiting our Instruction and Technology page.

Supply List
PLEASE TAKE NOTE
To help with organization, we have suggested a color for specific subjects. We also suggest purchasing an inexpensive flash drive for your child to use throughout the year so work can be saved and worked on from home and school.
Also, we have noticed that the flexible binders fit a little better in the lockers. Students are expected to bring pens and pencils to each class every day.
Please check with your child periodically to see if he/she still has pens/pencils during the year.
Thank you.

The Silver Creek Elementary Chorus, Intermediate Chorus, and Sunshine Singers traveled to Chautauqua Lake High School on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 to participate in the New York State School Music Association (N.Y.S.S.M.A.) Spring Choral Evaluation Festival. Written comments were received from two certified NYSSMA adjudicators, who commented on evaluative categories including tone, intonation, balance, technique, accuracy, diction, interpretation, discipline, appearance, and appropriate choice of music.
As beginners, the Elementary Chorus of 3rd graders sang at N.Y.S.S.M.A. Level I, with their selections including New Shoes Blues by Roger Lentz with soloists Kyra Y., Autumn E., and Amanda I., followed by Wind on The Hill and Who Has Seen The Wind? both written by Victoria Ebel-Sabo and featuring Mrs. Nicole Zenns on flute. The Elementary Chorus received a plaque designating a GOLD rating: “Gold rating will be awarded to organizations that have demonstrated an outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in each of the evaluative categories for all three selections.”
The Intermediate Chorus then sang at a N.Y.S.S.M.A. Level II, which is the recommended level for advanced elementary school choruses, and performed two-part treble arrangements including the jazz selection Spring by Dave Riley, Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening by Vera Kistler with sleigh bells played by 4th grader Jacob H. and flute played by Mrs. Zenns, and the first movement of Reflections Of A Lad At Sea: The Captain’s Mate by Don Besig and Nancy Price. The Intermedi-ate Chorus also received a plaque designating a GOLD rating at Level II.
The Sunshine Singers followed the other two ensembles and performed at a designated N.Y.S.S.M.A. Level III, which exceeds the recommended level for advanced elementary school choruses. This select ensemble of 4th and 5th graders sang Winter Sleigh Ride , a three-part winter song by Cyn-
thia Gray assisted by Mrs. Nicole Zenns on sleigh bells, Winter’s Masquerade by Sonia Poorman, also in three parts, and a two-part arrangement of For The Beauty Of The Earth by John Rutter. The Sunshine Singers received a plague designating a GOLD rating at Level III as well.
The judges’ evaluations for the choruses included such comments as “You sing with a healthy vocal technique.”, “Most impressive unison and antiphonal singing.”, “Great choirs and great repertoire.”, and “It is a joy to watch you because you obviously enjoy what you do!”, All of the choruses were prepared and conducted by Elementary Choral Director Daniel L. Bromsted, and were assisted by Mrs. Fran Page on piano. Chaperones included Mrs. Zenns and Mrs. Page as well as Mrs. Alberta Roth, Mrs. Dennine Vara, and student teacher Miss Laura Giberson.
The Sunshine Singers are also noted for their excellent Fall Musical productions, with past endeavors including “Tom Sawyer”, “Johnny Appleseed”, “Robin Hood”, “Davy Crockett”, “Scrooge”, “A Knight To Remember”, and most recently “Cinderella”. A production of “Alice In Wonderland” is already being planned for the Fall of 2013.
In addition, all of choruses regularly perform at four annual concerts throughout the school year at Silver Creek Elementary School. The final concert of this year will be held on Wednes-day, May 15th with a 9:00 AM as well as 7:00 PM performance in the district auditorium. The Elementary Band under the di-rection of Mrs. Zenns will also be featured as well as the cho-ruses in the concerts.
The administration, faculty, and staff at Silver Creek Elemen-tary School, as well as their parents and the community are all extremely proud of the wonderful accomplishments of these young singers.

She chose a varied program of choral literature for treble voices including My Own Song by Crystal LaPoint Kowalski, For the Beauty of the Earth by John Rutter, Dodi Li, an Israeli Folksong sung in Hebrew, and Kusimama (‘Stand Tall’) by Jim Papoulis sung in Swahili and English.
KEY CLUB MEMBERS ATTEND
KEY CLUB CONVENTION By: Bridget Case
Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.
Each year, our members organize and volunteer at a Halloween Haunted House held at the school. We also volunteer at Silver Creek’s Santa in the Park and Toy Drive. This provides us with a wonderful opportunity to interact with some of the youngest members of our community and to provide less fortunate families with the spirit of the holidays. Throughout the year, we organize several fundraisers, including a mum sale in the fall, poinsettia sale in the winter and a flower sale in the spring.
The profits earned from these fundraisers help pay for the Key Club Convention, which we attend every other year. This year we traveled to Albany, for the New York District Convention. We were able to participate in several leadership workshops and interacted with other Key Club members from all over New York State. The purpose of the Key Club Convention is to collaborate with fellow members and share ideas about
how to strengthen our communities. We learned a great deal about promoting citizenship and hope to broaden our involvement in our community next year.
Our annual Italian Night Spaghetti Dinner was held on May 21st. Proceeds from this event will also help fund our trip to the Key Club Convention in 2015.
Although our club numbers are strong, we hope to gain even more members next year. Key Club members build lasting friendships while becoming upstanding citizens.
Silver Creek Elementary School was well represented in the 200 voice Elementary Chorus with seven 5th graders selected to participate in this prestigious event, including Brianna B., Brianna C., Jaylah C., Casimer K., Angelina L., Jessica P., and Marlie S. The singers practiced for several weeks before school, and were presented with participation certificates and Chautauqua stickers at the completion of the festival by Elementary Music Teacher Mr. Daniel L. Bromsted. The children were assisted on festival day by chaperone Elizabeth Kowal. Congratulations for representing our school well!

Silver Creek Elementary Primary Classes present
Spring Thing 2013: “A Disney Spectacular!”
Spring Thing 2013: “A Disney Spectacular!” was presented in the Silver Creek High School Gymnasium
on Friday, June 14th at a 9:00 AM performance. Over three hundred pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, 1st
grade, and 2nd grade students representing twenty primary classrooms gave the annual presentation to a full
house of guests which included parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, teachers, students, and friends.
Introduced by Mr. R. Scott Rudnicki, Elementary Principal, the performance included large and small group
songs from the Wonderful World of Disney, including themes from television, animated movies, and theme
parks, including the opening song “The Mickey Mouse March”. Classrooms were then ushered to the
choral risers for their individual presentations by grade level by none other than Mickey and Minnie Mouse (1st
grade teachers Brittany Jahreis and Janelle Smith). The pre-kindergarten classes opened the program with
songs from the classic movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which included “Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho” and
“Whistle While You Work”. These songs were assisted by pre-kindergarten teachers Tracy Ciancio as Snow White, and Wendy
Giampaolo as “Doc” with further assistance by 4th grade members of the Sunshine Singers as the remaining Dwarfs.
The kindergarten classes performed next featuring songs from Peter Pan, including “I Can Fly” and “Following the Leader” with
kindergarten teachers Shannon Matson and Heather Westlund dressed as Tinker Bell and Peter Pan. A second large group song
followed with the presentation of “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” from Song of the South with assistance by 2nd grade teacher Courtney
D’Angelo as the Green Frog. The 1st graders took the stage next with three songs from Mary Poppins, which included “Chim Chim
Cheree”, “A Spoonful of Sugar”, and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”, and were assisted by 1st grade teachers Lynn
Feeley, singing and acting the role of Mary Poppins, and Craig Lamoreaux as Bert the Chimney Sweep. They were
ably followed by the 2nd graders as they sang various Disney songs including “I’ve Got No Strings” (Pinocchio),
“The Ballad of Davy Crockett” (Davy Crockett), and “Bare Necessities” (The Jungle Book) with an appropriate
second visit by Miss D’Angelo as the Green Frog. The children said good-bye with a very sad version of “The
Mickey Mouse Alma Mater” and a traditional rendition of the Spring Thing signature song “It’s A Small World”
which is featured at Walt Disney World and Disneyland appropriately ended the program.
The production was conceived and conducted by Elementary Choral Director Daniel L. Bromsted with Elementary
Instrumental Director J. Nicole Zenns acting as piano accompanist, and was rehearsed during general music classes
over the past several weeks.
This performance represented a fine collaborative effort, from the support of the primary faculty, to
additional sound assistance provided by Kevin Rice. The custodial staff under the supervision of Mr.
Michael Daniels completed the set-up of choral risers, chairs, and set pieces. Large wooden trees
designed and built by Butch Shields provided an appropriate backdrop for the program, and were
decorated as well with balloons to match the theme. Special thanks also goes to the High School
Principal Mr. Jim Klubek and the Physical Education faculty for the use of the high school gymnasium,
the SCCS Administration and Elementary Principal Mr. R. Scott Rudnicki, as well as the parents and
the community for their continued support of this annual program.
Spring Thing was first conceived in 1963 to provide a performance outlet for primary-aged children not yet old enough to
participate in the choral or instrumental music programs offered at the school. Productions performed at the end of the school
year now span fifty years. This years’ production was the nineteenth and final one for Mr. Bromsted, and the second for Mrs.
Zenns, with themes of past performances including Story Time (3 one-act musical plays), An Aesop Adventure (moral stories in
song), The Circus (circus acts and songs), A Calendar of Song (holiday songs), A Visit With Mother Goose (nursery rhyme
songs and poems), It’s A Jungle Out There! (animal songs of friendship), Sing A Rainbow (songs about colors), and It’s
History! (a celebration of the American Folksong) to name but a few. Plans are already being made for continuation of this great
musical tradition as the 51st edition of Spring Thing is scheduled for June 13th, 2014.

Plans are well underway for this year’s Festival
– our 46th – and here’s some information about
what’s happening this year.
The Festival of Grapes Pageant will be held on
Saturday, September 14th at 6:15 p.m. at the
high school. The Pentathlon, which is open to boys ages 7 and
8, will be held on Monday, September 16th at 6:00 p.m. at the
high school parking lot. A rain date for the pentathlon will be
Tuesday, September 17th. The opening ceremony for the
Festival is Thursday, September 19th at 6:00 p.m. followed at
7:00 by the annual Grape Stomp! Stop down and cheer for
your favorite stompers!
Our third annual Duck Race will be held on Saturday, July 13th
at 10:00 (water level in the creek permitting). This event is
held at the creek behind the VFW and is a fund raiser for the
festival. You can start “buying” your ducks at the Children’s
Fair which is on Saturday, June 8th and after that at Just Pets
in Irving.
On the Saturday of the festival, don’t miss several new
performances. At 11:00 a.m., come watch Clumsy the
Entertainer, a master juggler and comedian, at noon check out
the Eclectic Dance Company’s performers, and at 1:00 p.m.,
don’t miss magician, Todd Nelson, as he performs incredible
illusions.
On behalf of the Silver Creek Village Board I would like to extend my congratulations to all of the student athletes and their coaches for having successful programs throughout this past school year. We are especially proud of the boys’ basketball team and their accomplishments that have put our small village and school district on the map. We also would like to extend our congratulations to the Lacrosse team for a successful season.
I would also like to extend my congratulations to all of the school board members on a great job that they have done with this coming school year’s budget and the success of passing that budget. This only goes to show that the people of this district have confidence in all of you and the great job that you continue to do for the students and the communities that make up our district.
I would also like to congratulate the newly elected members on their success of being elected to the school board and know that they will continue on with the tradition of putting our students and education first and foremost in our school district.
Again on behalf of the village board we want to wish all of the graduating class of 2013 at Silver Creek Central School success in all of their future endeavors. This includes athletics and education if that is what is in their plans. We want to wish all of the students that their summer is filled with safety and enjoyment in no matter what they do. Those students that will be returning in the fall, keep up the hard work and continued success in the class rooms and in any sports participation that you plan on being a part of.
Continued success,

will be preparing some of their signature foods for you to
sample for a small fee. As in other “taste” events, you
purchase tickets and then turn in the tickets at the various
places for yummy treats! The Taste of Hanover will be set up
in the tennis courts along side the wine tasting tents.
Well, that’s just a sampling of things to come at the 2013
Festival of Grapes. We hope you’ll stop down and join all the
fun.
