y Its french for ³crepe from china .́y A light weight soft silk crepe made with a

plain weave and alternating S- and Z-twist in both warp and weft.

y It is available in several weights and has a

fine, firm hand.y The most common synthetic version is

made from polyester.y It is fine, lustrous and has a smooth

slippery surface.

y It is one of the oldest luxury fabrics, woven

in the early part of the third century by thepersians who called it ³taftah´ or ³taftan .́y It is fine, smooth, tightely woven fabric with

very fine crosswise ribs, made with a plainweave, fine warp yarn and heavier filling

yarn.y It looks same both the sides and has the

same TPI, PPI.y Acetate and Nylon variations are common.

y It is a coarsely woven fabric made in Indiaof spun silk usually on small hand

operated loom. It is made with thickirregular yarn in a loose plain weave orbasket weave.

y It is heavier silk fabric with dulled lustre.

y It varies in weight medium to heavy.y Good quality matka will be evenly woven,

while a lesser quality fabric may havethick or thin spots and slow signs of 

abrasion.
