We’ve had a front row seat to the rapid pace of growth in the innovation sector in the Bay Area for 30 years. Working with some of the most exciting companies and their investors in business today, we’re thrilled and honored to play a role in strengthening the environment for dynamic, innovative companies in the Bay Area and around the world. Technology and entrepreneurship is in the Bay Area’s DNA and the region continues to attract talented and innovative startups and entrepreneurs. The data presented in this report reflects our experience and what we see on a day to day basis. Silicon Valley continues to dominate the attention of tech investors and in 2013 is on pace for a five-year high in venture capital deal and funding activity. Q3 2013 was the strongest quarter in Silicon Valley tech investment since 2009, buoyed by huge deals for Uber, Palantir and Pure Storage. The Internet sector continues to lead in terms of deal share, but the mobile sector is on pace for a record high, taking nearly 1 in every 5 deals in Silicon Valley in 2013 YTD. We’re seeing an increase in new company formation nationally and innovation and entrepreneurship are responsible for creating new opportunities, jobs and wealth in every global location where SVB has an office. Companies in the Bay Area will still face challenges, such as finding enough engineers; and there will always be the ups and downs of business cycles, but we’re confident this is still one of the best areas in the world to build and grow a company. The global technology sector is growing, yet the Bay Area continues to be the hub. Sincerely,

Bob Blee Silicon Valley Bank, Palo Alto

Orrick is pleased to co-sponsor CB Insights’ Silicon Valley Tech

Venture Capital Almanac. We are confident that you will find the SV

Tech VC Almanac to be a valuable resource in assessing trends in the

Silicon Valley venture community.

The Almanac contains an array of interesting data points, but there

are a few particular points that we wanted to highlight. First, the third

quarter of 2013 witnessed the highest number of deals and dollars

invested in Silicon Valley-based tech startups since 2009. Second,

both seed and late-stage deal share are growing. Indeed, it is not only

a good time to be forming new companies, but also a good time to be

sustaining and scaling existing businesses. Finally, mobile venture

capital deals continue to grow, accounting for nearly 20% of deals in

Silicon Valley thus far in 2013 and on pace to reach their highest

annual deal total since 2009.

As you will see in the Almanac, the Silicon Valley venture community

is strong and continues to grow. Over $31.5 billion has been invested

into Silicon Valley-based tech startups since 2009, and Silicon Valley

continues to dominate the attention of tech investors. Orrick is

extremely proud to be a part of this community.

Sincerely,

John V. Bautista Partner, Emerging Companies group, Silicon Valley

Gerson Lehrman Group (GLG) proudly supports the Silicon Valley Venture Capital Almanac. GLG started in 1998 in a one room office in New York and has been through the ups and downs that most startups face. That is why we recently launched GLG Share (www.glgshare.com), an easy way for startups to build relationships with our membership – made up of over 350,000 academics, executives, and policy experts – covering every major industry and spanning the globe. Since we started, our mission has been to transform the way the world’s leading professionals gather and share expertise. In the fifteen years since then, we have opened new offices – including several in Silicon Valley – and facilitated over 1.5 million teaching and learning projects. Though our reach is truly global, the CB Insights data supports our view that the fastest and most innovative growth is coming from startups. As this report illustrates, since 2009, investors have pumped more than $31.5B into Silicon Valley-based technology startups and 2013 (which has been witness to huge deals) is shaping up to be a five-year high in VC deal and funding activity. That’s why we partner with numerous venture firms and their portfolio companies as well as directly with growth companies, via GLG Share. And that’s why we at GLG endeavor to build the richest and most collaborative community of expertise for entrepreneurs to support their growth. Sincerely,

Alexander Saint-Amand CEO

Andreessen Horowitz is a venture fund which was launched by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz in July 2009.

Andreessen Horowitz looks at companies across all stages and will invest as little as $50,000 and and as much as $50

million in a company per the firm. The fund expects to do many seed-stage investments in the hundreds of thousands of

dollars. Per the firm, they are open to participating in a variety of investment structures including buying founder shares,

investing in public stocks, and contributing to leveraged buyouts. The firm's general partners, Horowitz and Andreessen,

expect to participate on company Boards generally only when they've invested more than $5M. In terms of investment

criteria, Andreessen Horowitz expects to fund startups that (1) attack a large market, (2) have a technical founder who

intends to be CEO and (3) in the domain of computer science and information technology. Specifically, the firm will

consider the following areas: (1) consumer internet, (2) business internet (SaaS / Cloud Computing), (3) mobile software

and services, (4) software-powered consumer electronics, (5) infrastructure and applications software, (6) networking, (7)

storage databases and (8) other back-end systems. Geographically, Andreessen Horowitz is primarily interested in

Silicon Valley-based startups but will opportunistically look at opportunities outside of Silicon Valley. Per the firm,

Andreessen Horowitz does not invest in clean tech, green tech, energy, transportation, life sciences (biotech, drug

design, medical devices), nanotech, movie production companies, consumer retail, electric cars, rocket ships, space

elevators.

CrunchFund is an early stage venture capital firm founded in 2011 by Michael Arrington, the founder and editor of

TechCrunch, and Patrick Gallagher who formerly worked at Vantage Point Venture Partners. The Crunchfund's inaugural

fund of $20 million was established to invest in information technology companies at any stage with a primary focus on

seed and early stage investments. The firm's first fund was raised in September of 2011. Investors in the CrunchFund

are reported to include AOL, Accel Partners, Austin Ventures, Greylock Partners, Kleiner Perkins, Redpoint Ventures,

Sequoia Capital, the individual founding partners of Andreessen Horowitz, as well as the general partners of Benchmark

Capital, Ron Conway of SV Angel, Yuri Milner of DST and Kevin Rose, founder of Digg. The fund's beginning in

September 2011 was shrouded in controversy given the associations between Michael Arrington, TechCrunch and AOL.

There was significant commentary at the time of the launch that suggested that the editorial independence of

TechCrunch and hence AOL, its parent, would be compromised if they are investing in companies which TechCrunch

covers. Michael Arrington formerly invested individually as an angel investor in companies. Arrington's past investments

as an angel investor can be seen in the investor profile under his name - Michael Arrington.

Floodgate (formerly Maples Investments) is a ''Super Angel'' firm led by Mike Maples Jr. The fund's size is $73.5 million.

Maples is known for his early investments in Digg and Twitter. The firm was rebranded from Maples Investments to

Floodgate in March 2010. Floodgate aims to offer a fundraising approach that bridges the gap between initial seed

money from traditional angel investors and the larger rounds that characterize traditional venture capital rounds. In

terms of investment size, Floodgate focuses on investments between $150,000 to $1,000,000. They generally invest

alongside other angels or venture capital firms. From an industry perspective, Floodgate seeks technology ventures in

the following areas: hardware, software, small business, enterprise, Internet, B2B and consumer markets. They look for

capital efficient companies. Geographically, Floodgate seeks to invest in firms that are geographically based in the San

Francisco Bay Area (California) or in Austin, Texas.

Khosla Ventures is a venture capital firm that analyzes and advises entrepreneurs. The firm manages a main fund that

supports early- and late-stage investments and a seed fund for developing very early-stage experiments. Khosla

Ventures focuses on next-generation energy projects, new materials, mobility, the Internet and silicon technology. The

firm was established in 2004 by Vinod Khosla. Khosla Ventures is interested in several sectors: mobile, Internet,

alternative energy, energy efficiency, storage, materials, and other unconventional areas. Though the seed and main

funds look for slightly different things, both funds seek out unfair advantages: proprietary, protected technological

advances; business model innovations; unique partnerships; top-notch teams.
