Lot #16
Gainsborough – A Portrait by James Hamilton
“Frank, lucid and modern, this is a fresh portrait of
Thomas Gainsborough, the most sensuous artist of
the eighteenth century.
Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) lived as if electricity shot through his sinews and crackled at
his finger ends. He was a gentle and empathetic
family man, but had a volatility that could lead him
to slash his paintings, and a loose libidinous way of
speaking, writing and behaving that shocked many
deeply. He would be dynamite in polite society
today.
In this exhilarating new biography – the first in decades – James Hamilton reveals Gainsborough in
his many contexts: the easy-going Suffolk lad,
transported to the heights of fashion by a natural
talent; the rake-on-the-make in London, learning
his art in the shadow of Hogarth; falling on his feet
when he married a duke’s daughter with a handsome private income; the top society-portrait
painter in Bath and London who earned huge sums
by bringing the right people into his studio; the
charming and amusing friend of George III and
Queen Charlotte who nevertheless kept clear of the
aristocratic embrace.
There has been much art history written about this chameleon of art, but with fresh insights into
original sources, GAINSBOROUGH: A PORTRAIT
transforms our understanding of this fascinating
man, and enlightens the century that bore him.”
The book on offer, published by the Royal Mint Museum (2016), is hardback, and will be signed by the author on the night, and inscribed to the purchaser.

Lot #17
Britannia: Icon on the Coin by Katharine Eustace
“Britannia has been part of the identity of Britain for
200 years, appearing as a symbol of the country
first on Roman coins and later on coins of Britain from the seventeenth century. The art historian
Katharine Eustace traces the story back to ancient
times, unearthing a record of this most powerful and
successful of national symbols through sculpture
and public monuments, paintings and posters,
signage and cartoons. Britannia has occupied a place in national life and popular culture but more
than anywhere else it has been on the coinage
where she has made her home and is most readily
recognised.
The purpose of this lavishly illustrated book is to explore the sources and inspiration behind the
image of Britannia on the coinage. Along the way,
whether through history, politics or economics, as
well as through the influence of artistic movements,
Katharine Eustace clearly explains why Britannia
has changed and why quite often she has remained the same. It is an enthralling story and a biography
in images, told with authority ad style, of a nation’s
fortunes embodied in female form.”
Foreword by Sir Roy Strong
Selected and especially labelled for your table by Kidlington’s own local micro-
bar, why not try this Superior wine from France: a designation arising from the
higher quality standards to which viticulturists and vintners must adhere in order to have Supérieur on their wine label.
There are three bottles of this wine available for auction and they will
go to the three highest bidders.
* BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR VINTAGE 2015 Bordeaux Supérieur can originate anywhere in the Bordeaux Region, yet from
the areas closer to Saint-Émilion - as is this Chateau de Courtebotte from the
Entre-deux Mers - the result of this northerly bias brings a difference which adds
to the creation of a superior wine with a richer and more complex flavour. As
the name suggests, the designation Bordeaux Supérieur promises to offer a
superior version of Bordeaux appellation d'origine contrôlée wines. Under the strict guidelines of French appellation law for a Bordeaux to be classified as
Supérieur it must come from a vineyard that is planted more densely, but there
is more. The elevated status of Bordeaux Supérieur is further defined by use of
older vines; densely planted vineyards; required ripeness of fruit and natural
sugar levels upon harvest; lower harvest yields; minimum 10.5% ABV - 12-
month minimum barrel ageing requirement. There must be 4,500 plants per hectare with a distance of 2.2 meters between rows, compared to 4,000 plants
per hectare with a distance of 2.5 meters between rows for regular Bordeaux.
This higher density makes it harder for the plants to survive creating stronger
deeper roots, and healthier vines for the ones that do. The regulations also
stipulate a lower yield, about 10 percent lower per hectare, which allows each
vine to maximize the nutrients received by the grapes that have not been pruned. The grapes must also be picked riper at harvest with higher natural
sugar levels resulting in at least a 10 percent natural alcohol level - a slight bit
higher than the 9.5 percent minimum for regular Bordeaux. Chateau De
Courbotte is a family estate whose vineyards are located on an excellent terroir
which produces fine, elegant wines with great aromatic complexity. A classic
blend of Merlot 60% and Cabernet Sauvignon 40%.
* This wine benefits from aeration hence recommended is decanting for around
an hour or so before accompanying a meal or before pouring a first glass.
