TERMS AND CONDITIONS 

PAYMENTFull payment must be made at time of booking. A processing fee is included on all credit card, phone, and internet reservations.

REFUNDSSummer camps are non-refundable for cancellations made 44 days or less before the start date of camp. Cancellations made 45 days or more before start date of camp will incur a cancellation fee of 40% of entire fees paid. 

There will be no refunds issued for instances of homesickness, seasickness, or any other unforeseen circumstances. Refunds are given at the discretion of the Director of Public Programs.    Programs/events usually proceed in light rain and other moderate weather conditions; however Ocean Institute may cancel the program/event  up to one hour before the start time in the event in adverse weather conditions or boat-related issues. The decision to cancel rests solely with the captain. Transfers to a comparable program or a refund will be provided if the Ocean Institute cancels the program/event. 

TRANSFERSA $20.00 per program, per person fee will be charged on all transfers and returned checks. Transfers are subject to availability.

PROGRAM CONFIRMATION & REQUIRED FORMS Confirmations will be emailed to the address you provide. Camp materials (itinerary & waivers) will be included with your confirmation. There must be a completed Medical Form and an Acknowledgement of Risk Form for each child. Required forms for Summer Programs will also be available online. Completed forms will be accepted online only; they are due one week PRIOR to the start of your camp session.

DISCOUNTS – 3 EASY WAYS TO SAVE! Discounts may not be combined. 

Group Discounts Summer Camp groups of 5 or more qualify for a 10% discount. Participants must register for the same week and register by calling Guest Services at (949) 496-2274. Reservations must be made on the same day by 4pm on weekdays or by 3pm on weekends. Groups will be charged the full camp price if all reservations are not booked on the same day. 

Multi-Camp Discount Individual campers participating in two or more 2016 Summer Week-long Day Camps, Island Bound, or Single- Day programs qualify for a 15% discount. The discount will be taken off of the camp of equal or lesser value. Contact Guest Services at (949) 496-2274 to assist with your booking.

Sea Squirts CampAges 5-6 Sessions: 1-7

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a shark, turtle, sea star, or whale? This camp brings to life some of the biggest and smallest animals in the sea. Each day you will sing a song to introduce a new theme for the day’s activities with highlights that include daily crafts, sand castle building at Baby Beach, and a hunt for treasure. Join us for a fun-filled week!

Neptune’s Mysteries CampAges 6–7 Sessions: 1-7

Become a member of Neptune’s Detective Agency by solving mysteries each day using scientific tools and techniques. Use your scientific detective skills to determine why Becky Blue Whale is so far from home, and murdered Mr. Mackerel by exploring the Dana Point Marine Conservation Area, taking a Marine Mammal cruise onboard the R/V Sea Explorer, and investigating the behaviors of marine creatures.

Buccaneer Adventure CampAges 7–8 Sessions: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6

Set a course for adventure and learn about the life of a pirate at sea. Learn the ropes to survive at sea with dockside activities on the Pilgrim before venturing out on the open ocean aboard the R/V Sea Explorer. Earn your “salt” by completing lost mariner arts such as sail handling, rowing, storytelling, and more. At the end of the week, celebrate with “Dress like a Pirate Day.”

What adaptations help animals survive in their habitats? What does it take to care for sea creatures? What does the inside of a squid look like? Find out the answers to these questions and more by creating an aquarium and taking care of it, dissecting a squid, and exploring nearby ecosystems. Highlights include piloting ROVs, a two-hour cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, visiting the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, and exploring the Dana Point Marine Conservation Area.

Challenge yourself as a maritime archeologist to solve the mysteries of shipwrecks off our coast. Build your own ship, recover artifacts, learn navigation, drive ROVs, and venture to sea on both the tall ship, Spirit of Dana Point, and the R/V Sea Explorer.

Explore the unique coastline of Dana Point in this activity-packed camp. Throughout the week, study the science of the surf zone in our labs and onboard the R/V Sea Explorer, and investigate human impacts on the environment. This camp includes a day of cruising along the coastline looking for blue whales and conducting scientific sampling. Have fun catch and release fishing, kayaking in Dana Point Harbor, and exploring the intertidal area.

Sea Tech CampAges 12–14 Session: 2

Discover the ocean from its very surface to its very deep ocean floor in this hands-on camp. Collect surface samples aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, build an ROV to gather data, learn about underwater acoustics, kayak in the harbor, and finish the week with a whale watching eco-tour.

Marine Science Careers / Internship Academy Ages 14–17 Session: 3

This week-long program introduces you to intertidal ecology, animal husbandry, laboratory investigations, and shipboard research to spark interest in a career in marine science. Program highlights include a snorkeling field trip, a 4-hour research cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, creating and conducting a research project in the Dana Point Marine Conservation Area, and leadership and team building activities.

Successful program graduates may apply to intern in one of our departments: Animal Husbandry, R/V Sea Explorer, Public Programs, or Citizen Science. If selected, you will work alongside our staff, mastering new skills you will use for your own research project. Your internship year ends with a symposium where you will present your research project.

MULTI-DAY OVERNIGHT CAMPS

Island Bound Camp Ages 11–13 Sessions: 1, 3

Voyage to Catalina Island aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point. This camp draws you into the adventure of tall ship sailing and reveals rich marine resources of a beautiful California island.  Day One is spent developing you into young sailors and part of a fully functioning crew. During your voyage, team up with our professional crew for sailing, navigating, and learning rope work. Explore a marine ecosystem through kayaking, swimming, and snorkeling. This voyage of discovery will be an adventure to remember!

Eco-Expeditions Overnight Camp Ages 10-12

Travel from the beach to the “deep” during this two-day, single night camp. Discover how organisms adapt to their habitat, from our coastal ecosystem to the deep-sea environment. Explore tidepools and kayak through the harbor, then use scientific tools to determine how humans impact these diverse habitats. Enjoy dinner and a night beside the sea before going on a whale watching eco-tour.

Junior Neptune’s Ages 6–8

Discover what life is like underwater as you meet “Big Al,” the fish from the popular children’s book Big Al, interact with animals in our lab, and conduct investigations in underwater adaptations. Venture out on the ocean aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, first exploring the harbor and then taking a brief trip outside to see the local sea lions.

Junior OceanographerAges 9–12

What is it like to be a marine scientist? Step into the fascinating world of marine biology and oceanography. Be curious as you dive into the magical marine world!

Discover the amazing worlds of sea turtles, sharks and whales! One animal is highlighted each day; sign up for a session or just a single day. Explore everyone’s favorite ocean predator to discover what separates sharks from their bony fish cousins. On whale day, investigate the largest animals in the world and their food. . . . the smallest creatures in the sea!

Father’s Day Adventure at SeaSign aboard for an exciting voyage on a real tallship! Bioluminescence CruisesThere’s a luminous underwater world just waiting to shine! Learn about the remarkable ability of some marine animals to glow in the dark and witness this curiously beautiful phenomenon.*

Come aboard the R/V Sea Explorer and join us at night off the coast of Dana Point to explore the nocturnal world of bioluminescent plankton, marine birds, and sea lions. A meter net is deployed to capture thousands of these drifting organisms that have the ability to make their own light. Also, witness the food chain under our deployed squid light–from the tiniest of plankton, to fish and squid–and at times the sea lions and dolphin who feed on them!*Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon and the amount of light produced by living organisms will vary, depending on natural factors.
