Prefabrication primers provide steel plates and sections withtemporary or permanent corrosion protection duringtransportation and construction.

Sigma Coatings products have over 30 years of experience, with acomplete range of prefabrication primers for application by bothmanual and fully automatic blasting and coating facilities.

Applications can vary from a temporary blast pr imer on structuralsteel to the use as a permanent primer on special 9% nickel carbonsteel plates (as used for the inner containmentshell in large concrete LNG tanks).

It is also ideally suited for use on land storage tanks and chemicalinstallations.

The period of protection provided depends on the technology usedand on the exposure conditions encountered during transport, storage and construction.

SigmaWeld applicationsSigma Coatings prefabrication primers are used in a wide range ofapplications.

    SigmaWeld 210

    High-zinc ethyl silicate prefabrication primer

l Provides up to 12 monthsprotection on blast- cleaned steel

    lExcellent heat resistance,minimizing weld burn-back

l Meets the requirements oDVS-0501 (tested at the GermanSchweisstechnische Lehr-und

    l Versuchsanstalt Duisburg)

l Welding certifcates available(including Lloyds Register oShipping and Det Norske Veritas)

l Compatible with almost all typeso organic topcoats

The SigmaWeld 210 inorganic zinc silicate

prefabrication primer protects tank plates,or even pipes, from cold deformation and

mechanical abuse. This is caused by thebending equipment used to shape the metal

after it has been blasted and coated.

Coated plates and structural componentswill survive weathering and abuse during

    extended periods of overseas transport.

    SigmaWeld 199

    Zinc ethyl silicate prefabrication primer

l Provides up to 6 months protectionon blast- cleaned steel

    lExcellent anti-corrosive properties

l Welding certifcates available(including Lloyds Register oShipping)

l Excellent cutting and weldingproperties including MIG/MAG

    lProvides regular, smooth weld seams

    l Excellent heat resistance,minimizing weld burn-back

    Welding properties

Preabrication primers can be welded andcut with manual or automatic equipmentdepending on the welding and cuttingtechnology, conditions, speed and qua-

lity requirements. The zinc ethyl silicatetechnology-based products will typicallyshow minimal damage and no burn-back,whereas organic binder-based products willshow burn marks that should be removedi used in combination with a permanentcoating system.

Welding properties will vary dependingon the product technology and dry-flmthickness used. Please check with PPGProtective & Marine Coatings or specifccertifcation on weld quality and weldingume analysis.

    Application

The SigmaWeld range can be applied byully automatic blasting and paint ingacilities or steel plates and structuralsteel sections.

Its excellent spray atomization andflm-orming properties allow pinhole-reeapplication to a very low and uniormflm thickness on an abrasive blastcleaned steel substrate. In addition, agreat advantage o the range is that itsast dry ing properties allow handling bymagnets and stacking o steel plates orsections within the short process times othe coating acilities.

    Permanent topcoating systems

Provided the condition o thepreabrication pr imer is good, and itssurace cleanliness is in compliance withthe requirements or the next coat, theseproducts can be used as the frst coatanti-corrosive primer in a permanentcoating system. Suitability will vary withthe type o preabrication primer, therequired coating perormance and theselected coating system. Bare areas, weldsand mechanically damaged areas requirecleaning and repairing with a suitabletouch-up primer.
