Sight Word FluencyAs children acquire fluency they begin to read text accurately and quickly. Fluency is the ability to decode unknown words and (2) automatically recognize sight words. Sight words are irregularlyspelled words that cant be sounded out and/or words that occur frequently in text and need to be recognized on sight. Recognition of these words will increase your childs reading fluency.

Sight Word FluencyThere are 11 lists of sight words that your child should know by the end of second grade.

Begin with the first list of words written-typed on index cards or construction paper (your preference). Introduce the activity by pronouncing each word in the list for your child. Next, have your child read the word. This is called echo reading.

Repeat this several times to ensure that your child is certain of the words. Have your child practice with a timer. The goal is to read the entire list within 15 seconds.Then provide your child with several opportunities for practice. Before moving to the next list, your child should be able to read the words accurately without hesitation.Next, time your child as he/she reads the words aloud to you. Put the sight words read correctly in one stack, and those read incorrectly in a separate stack.

Look throughpreviously read books with your child to find sight words.

Have your child point to each sight word found. Then have him/her read the word to you.Materials Needed1. Sight word lists - 11 lists will be shared at the end of the video
