We recommend you read this UserGuide carefully, so that you can useall functions of the phone fully.

7SIM card

Insert SIM cardThe Service Provider supplies youwith a SIM card on which all the im-portant data for your line are stored.

If the SIM card has been delivered incredit card size, snap the smallersegment out and remove any roughedges.

Insert SIM card under the retai-ning ribs n. Observe correct

position of the angled corner,goldcontacts pointing downward.

Press SIM card downwardo un-til the latch engages.

Then insert (see p. 8) the battery(see p. 8).

Only 3 Volt SIM cards are supported. OlderSIM cards (5 Volt technology) cannot beused. Please contact your Service Provider.

Remove SIM card Switch off phone. Unlock and remove battery.

Press latch inwardpuntil theSIM card jumps out a short way.

Then remove the SIM card.

Functions without SIM card

If the phone is switched on withoutSIM card, the following display ap-pears:

Insert battery Insert battery at the bottom of the

phonen and press inward until it

clicks into placeo.

Switch off the phone before youremove it!

Unlock batteryo, then remove n.

Charge battery The battery is not fully charged

when delivered, so:

Interconnect the socket and theSync Station n with the plug-inpower supply.

Insert the phone into the SyncStationo and press downwarduntil it engages. The contact mes-sage is displayed (alternatively:

plug in power supply directly tothe phone).

The voltage indicated on theSync Station must not be ex-ceeded.

ChargingThe charger heats up when used for longperiods. This is normal and not dangerous.

4 End of charging

An empty battery is fully charged afterabout 2 hours. Charging is only possible in

an ambient temperature of 5°C to 40°C(the charge icon flashes as a warning whenthe temperature is 5°C above/below).

Usage timeA fully charged battery provides 60 to 170 hours of standby time or 1 to 4 hours of talktime. The standby times/talk times areaverage values and depend on the opera-ting conditions (see table below).

9MultiMediaCard™With the MultiMediaCard, yourphone acquires a very large memory.It enables you to store numerousaddresses, MP3 music files or voice

memos. You may also use the Multi-MediaCard like a floppy-disk to sa-ve any other desired files.

Change the MultiMedia-Card™

When you buy your SL45, theMultiMediaCard is already inthe phone.

Push open the small button oppo-siten (using a pen, etc). Removethe MultiMediaCard carrierfrom the phoneo.

Please treat the MultiMediaCard careful-ly. Do not bend it or expose it to staticelectricity.

Insert the MultiMediaCard intothe carrier p.

Slide the carrier with theMultiMediaCard into thephone againo.

File managementThe Card-Explorer is available in thephone for organising your files (see

p. 67). In combination with a PC, youcan also use the Data ExchangeSoftware (see p. 70).

Note that the entries on the Multi-MediaCard are not automaticallylinked with the entries on the SIMcard. For example, entries that youmake in the address book are only

stored on the MultiMediaCard.New MultiMediaCard

1. Save the data of the old MultiMedia-Card on a PC.

2. Format the new MultiMediaCard withthe aid of the Data Exchange Software.

3. Transfer the data from the PC on to the

new MultiMediaCard.

Enter PINThe SIM card can be protected witha 4-8 digit PIN code.

Enter your PIN code using the di-git keys (shown as a series ofasterisks,if you make an errorpress &OHDU ).

Confirm input.Press the soft key 2. .

When you switch the phone on for the first

time the language of your Service Provideris loaded (see also p. 57). This takes a fewseconds.

The logon to the network will take afew seconds.When the name of the Service Provi-der appears in the display, the pho-

ne is in standby mode and ready for use.

SIM Card

Whenever you change a SIM Card you areprompted to copy the names and phonenumbers stored there to the MultiMedia-Card after you have switched on the pho-ne. Follow the instructions on the display.

If you want to copy the data of the SIM Cardto the MultiMediaCard later on, you canuse the functions on the SIM Card menu(see p. 21).

Problems with the SIM Card

If Please insert your SIM card! is dis-played, check for faults, see p. 74.

Wrong PIN?

If the PIN is entered incorrectly three times,the SIM Card is blocked, see p. 74.

Emergency number (SOS)

By pressing the soft key 626 you can makean emergency call without SIM card or PIN

input via any network. This must only beused in case of emergency!

Network connection

Strength of the incoming signal.

A weak signal reduces the callquality and may lead to a breakoff of the connection. In this ca-se, change your location.

Do not interfere with the antenna at the topof the phone unnecessarily during operati-on, otherwise the quality of the connectionmay be impaired.

If you are outside your home network,your phone automatically selects another

GSM network (see also p. 61).

SIM services

Z This symbol is displayed if yourSIM card supports special appli-cations provided by your ServiceProvider.

Dialling with digit keysThe phone must be switched on(standby mode).

Enter the number

- if necessary with interna-tional dialling code

- national only for calls tothe national fixed network.

&OHDU A short press clearsthe last digit, a long pressthe entire number.

Press the Call key. Thephone number displayedis dialled.

End call

$ Press the End key. The callis ended.

Press this key even if the person onthe other end of the line has hung upfirst.

International dialling code

You can access international dialling codesstored in your phone:

Press the key until a + symbolappears. The two leading digitswill be 00.

/LVW Press.

Select the required country from the list.The international dialling code is displayed.

Now add the national number (in many

countries without the first digit if it is a zeroand press the Call key.

Stereo headphones:

Plug in the stereo headphones at the bot-tom of the phone. With the PTT key you canuse the functions answer call, end call and in standby mode you can use voice dial-

ling (see p. 24).

If there is a call, the music is automaticallyinterrupted. Press the PTT key on the head-set cable to accept the call (see p. 26).

Warning:Both earpieces must never be used whendriving or operating machinery.

When number is busyIf the number called is busy or itcannot be reached because of net-work problems, the following opti-ons are available:

Auto redial previous numbers $XWR'LDO Press. The number is auto-

matically dialled for up to15 minutes at increasingintervals. During this peri-od, no other phone num-ber can be dialled.

To end:

Press 2II orend key $.

Reminder 3URPSW Press. A beep reminds

you to redial the displayedphone number after 15 mi-nutes.

Any other call ends the function.

Redial previous numbersTo redial the phone number last cal-led:

Press the Call keytwice.

To redial other numbers that weredialled previously:

Press the Call key once.

Pick out the required pho-ne number from the list oflast calls, then press...

... to dial.

Prerequisite: You have recorded an Answer-ing notice and it is active.

When a call comes in, press the dictationkey briefly. The call is accepted and an Ans-wering notice is played without your havingto speak (see also p. 30).

You can answer incoming calls using any

key, setup see p. 57.

An incoming call will interrupt any other useof the phone.

During a call you can be advised thatthere is another call waiting. You willhear a special tone during the call.Now, you have the following opti-

ons:

Swap 6ZDS Accept the waiting call and

place the current call onhold.

To swap between the two

calls, press 6ZDS eachtime.

Reject 5HMHFW Reject waiting call. The

caller hears the busy tone.

or

'LYHUW If this is set, the caller is di-verted e. g. to the mailbox(see p. 55).

End current call

$ End the current call.

$QVZHU Accept the new call.

You may need to register for this service wi-th your Service Provider and set your phoneaccordingly (see p. 64).

Set volumeYou can ad-just the hand-

set volume wi-th the keys onthe phone.

If a car kit is used, its volume settingdoes not affect the usual setting onthe phone.

DictaphoneYou can play back a recording (theperson on the other end of the linealso hears it) or record the call, seep. 28.

Phone number memoYou can key in a number during acall. The person on the other end ofthe line can hear the number en-tered. It can be stored or contactedafter the current call has ended.

Search entryYou can quickly search through largeaddress books. When the addressbook is open, simply write the firstletter of the name required.

The first entry that begins with thisletter is displayed. Continue by thesecond letter etc until the name re-quired is displayed.

A magnifying glass icon appears in

the upper right-hand corner of thedisplay with the search letters.

Call entry

' Open address book(in standby mode).

Select required entry.

If multiple phone numbers arestored in the entry...
