    Information for parentsPlease read the operating instructions and safety precautions carefully before use.Explain the content and the hazards associated with using the phone to your children.

    Remember to comply with legalrequirements and local restric-tions when using the phone. Forexample in aeroplanes, petrolstations, hospitals or while driv-ing.

    Mobile phones can interferewith the functioning of medicaldevices such as hearing aids orpacemakers. Keep at least20 cm/9 inches between phoneand pacemaker. When usingthe mobile phone hold it to theear which is further away fromthe pacemaker. For more infor-mation consult your doctor.

    The SIM card may be removed.Caution! Small parts like thiscould be swallowed by youngchildren.

    The mains voltage specified onthe power supply unit (V) mustnot be exceeded. Otherwise thecharging device may be de-

    stroyed.

    The ringtone (p. 53), info tones(p. 55)and handsfree talkingare reproduced through theloudspeaker. Do not hold thephone to your ear when it ringsor when you have switched onthe handsfree function (p. 19).Otherwise you risk serious per-manent damage to your hear-ing.

    Only use original Siemens bat-teries (100 % mercury-free) and

    charging devices. Otherwiseyou risk serious damage tohealth and property. The batterycould explode, for instance.

    You may only open the phonetore place the battery (100 %mercury-free) or SIM card. Youmust not open the battery underany circumstances. All otherchanges to this device are strict-ly prohibited and will invalidatethe guarantee.

    NoteYour phone's display and the display on the top shell are delivered with a protective film. Re-move this film before getting started.In rare cases the static discharge may cause discolouration at the edges of the display. How-ever this will disappear within 10 minutes.

    Insert SIM card/batteryThe service provider supplies youwith a SIM card on which all the im-

    portant data for your subscription isstored. If the SIM card has been de-livered in credit-card size, snap thesmaller segment out and removeany rough edges.

    Press grooved area, then liftcover in the direction indicated bythe arrow.

    Press latch in the direction indica-ted by the arrow, lift battery atthe cutout on the side of thephone, then tilt upwards andremove.

    Insert SIM card in the opening,contacts pointing downwards(make sure the angled corner is incorrect position). Push gently

    until it engages.

    Insert battery in the phone side-ways, then press downwardsuntil it engages.

    Replace cover and press down-wards until it engages.

    Charge batteryThe battery is not fully chargedwhen delivered. Plug in the charger

    cable at the bottom of the phone,plug in the power supply unit to themains power socket and charge forleast two hours.

    h Display when charging isin progress

    Charging time

    An empty battery is fully charged af-ter about 2 hours. Charging is onlypossible in an ambient temperatureof 5C to 40C (the charge icon flash-es as a warning when the tempera-ture is 5C above/below this range).The voltage specified on the powersupply unit must not be exceeded.

    To use the full performance of thebattery, the battery must be fullycharged and discharged at least fivetimes.

    If the battery is totally discharged nocharge icon is displayed when thecharger is plugged in. It is displayed

    after 2 hours at most. In this casethe battery is fully charged after3-4 hours.

    Only use the charger provided!

    Display while in serviceCharge level display during opera-tion (empty-full):

    a d gA beep sounds when the battery isnearly empty. The charge level of thebattery is displayed correctly onlyafter uninterrupted charging/dis-charging. You should not removethe battery unnecessarily and if pos-sible not end charging prematurely.

    Change phonecodeYou define and enter the phonecode (4 - 8 digits) when calling a

    phone code protected function(e.g. Direct call, p. 22) for the firsttime. It is then valid for all protectedfunctions.

    If it is entered incorrectly three timesthe phone is locked. Contact theSiemens Service (p. 80).

    Clear SIM card barringIf the PIN is entered incorrectly threetimes, the SIM card is barred. Enterthe PUK (MASTER PIN) provided byyour service provider with the SIMcard, according to instructions. If thePUK (MASTER PIN) has been lost,please contact your service provider.

    Prevent accidentalactivationEven if PIN use is deactivated (p. 14)

    confirmation is required to switch onthe phone.

    This prevents accidental activationof the phone, e.g. when you arecarrying it in a bag or when you aretravelling in an aircraft.

    When a number is busyIf the called number is busy or can-not be reached because of network

    problems several options are avail-able (depending on the service pro-vider). An incoming call or any otheruse of the phone interrupts thesefunctions.

    Either

    Auto redial previous numbers

    Autodial Press. The number is auto-matically dialled for up to15 minutes at increasingintervals. End with:

    B End key.Or

    Call backCallback Press. Your phone rings

    when the busy number isfree. Press the Call key todial the number.

    Or

    Reminder

    Prompt Press. A beep reminds youto redial the displayedphone number after15 minutes.

    Accept call

    The phone must be switched on(standby mode). An incoming callwill interrupt any other use of thephone.

    Reply Press.

    Or

    A Press.If the phone number has been trans-mitted by the network, it is dis-played. If the number and the name

    are stored in the Phonebook, thecorresponding name is displayed in-stead. If set, an animation can be dis-played instead of the bell icon(p. 26).

    and set your phone accordingly(p. 57).

    During a call, you may be advisedthat there is another call waiting.You will hear a special tone duringthe call. You have the following op-tions:

    Accept the waiting callSwap Accept the waiting calland place the current callon hold. To swap be-tween the two calls, pro-ceed as above.

    End the current call:

    BPress. The following que-ry is displayed: "Return tothe call on hold?"

    Yes Return to the held call.

    Or

    No The held call is ended.

    Reject waiting callReject Reject the waiting call.

    The caller hears the busytone.

    OrDivert If this is set, the waiting

    call will be diverted to themailbox for example(setting, p. 59).

    ConferenceCall up to 5 parties one by one andlink them together in a phone con-

    ference. Some of the functions de-scribed may not be supported byyour service provider or may have tobe enabled specially.

    You have established a connection:

    new number. When thenew connection is estab-lished ...

    ymenu ... open menu and selectConference. The held call isjoined.

    Repeat procedure until all partici-pants are linked together (up to5 participants).

    CSD(Circuit Switched Data)

    Data transfer is made via a data con-

    nection to a default IP address ofyour network provider or service pro-vider. This connection can be usedfor the exchange of data (e.g. foraccess to the Internet or for down-loading games and applications aswell as for using WAP services).

    As long as this connection is estab-

    lished in order to use data services orto download applications from theInternet, charges for connection willaccrue in line with your network orservice providers price list.

    Emergency number (SOS)By pressing the control keySOS, you

    can make an emergency call on anynetwork without a SIM card andwithout entering a PIN (not availablein all countries).

    This must only be used in real emer-gencies!

    EMS(EnhancedMessagingService)

    Besides (formatted) texts, you can

    also send pictures (bitmaps),

    sounds,

    animations (sequence of 4 pic-tures)

    using the EMS.

    The segments specified above can

    be together or transmitted individu-ally in an SMS. With EMS, picturesand sounds can also be sent (e.g. asscreensavers and ringtones). Thiscan cause messages that exceed thelength of a single SMS. In this case
