Featured SpeakersJim Sporleder
Jim Sporleder has dedicated the next chapter of his life to assisting schools become more trauma informed and centers of healing. After 33 years as an educator and most recently as principal of Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, Washington, Jim and his staff’s pioneering work was documented in the movie, “Paper Tigers.”
Carla Tantillo PhilibertCarla Tantillo Philibert, the Founder of Mindful Practices, conducts Professional Development workshops across the globe. Carla is the author of Cooling Down Your Classroom and the Everyday SEL series on Routledge, which provides practical Social-Emotional Learning and Mindfulness solutions for Early Childhood to High School teachers. Mindful Practices provides a professional development experience that empowers teachers to use relaxation, breathing and yoga in the classroom to create a calmer and more ready-to-learn classroom environment. The collaborative format provides teachers with unique classroom management techniques and incorporates SEL, Yoga and Wellness activities. The training is designed to show teachers how to integrate more SEL,
mindfulness and movement into the classroom setting in order to improve student self-awareness, self-regulation and interpersonal skills.
Liz Cox - Executive Director, Prevent Child Abuse IowaEarly experiences shape the quality of our adult lives. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that can dramatically upset a child’s sense of safety and well-being. The original Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study revealed how strongly negative experiences in childhood can derail a child’s development, and lead to a host of physical, mental, financial, and social challenges throughout a lifetime.
Iowa ACEs research shows that 5 out of 30 adults have experienced significant childhood trauma and more than 51 percent of adult Iowans report experiencing at least one adverse childhood experience. Studies show that by the time children enter preschool, one in four will have experienced a traumatic event impacting their readiness to learn.
Justin Blietz - Restorative Justice Justin Blietz is an associate principal with a passion for building capacity and empowering educators with skills that support trauma-sensitive practices. Justin has extensive work with culture and climate transformation through trauma-informed and restorative practices. Starting as a teacher in Houston and then Des Moines, he quickly learned the value of relationships and brain-based strategies. He is now using his knowledge and experiences to transform systems that are trauma-informed and support success for all students. This includes integrating mindfulness practices, social and emotional learning, and intentional relationship building into the schools daily practice while working to drastically limit the use of exclusionary practices. https://twitter.com/justinblietz
Shelly Rock - Make It OKShelly Rock, RN, BAN, MA will be presenting Make It OK--learning more about normalizing conversations about mental illnesses, exposing misconceptions and creating a positive change in our approach to those suffering from mental illness. https://makeitok.org/
Laura Fuller - Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS)CPS is the non-punitive, non-adversarial, trauma-informed model of care Dr. Greene originated and describes in his various books, including The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost & Found, and Raising Human Beings. https://www.livesinthebalance.org/sites/default/files/FAQ%20020816.pdf
Luann Alemao - Blue Zones, Adult Self CareBlue Zones sessions will feature three different topics: Move Naturally, Eating Well, and Ikaria, Greece.
Marty Wallace - Creative Living Center“The Body Won’t Forget - Trauma In the School”
This breakout session will emphasize that a student’s learning and behavior can be greatly affected by acute, chronic, or complex trauma in their lives. One-fourth of the students in every school have been traumatized to the point that education is difficult or below expectations. There will be basic knowledge about trauma, examples and videos, helpful strategies to help these kids, and ways to become a trauma informed school. At times there will be laughter, tears, and sharing as trauma information is covered.
Marty Wallace is a LMHC, RPT/S, and an attachment and trauma specialist. He is a therapist at the Creative Living Center in Rock Valley. Marty taught eighth grade at the Sibley-Ocheyedan School District for twenty years. He was also the guidance counselor there for thirteen years. After that, Marty studied and was trained by some of the leading trauma/attachment doctors in the United States. He is a well-known speaker in three states. Marty’s passion to help traumatized/attachment difficult kids has become a focal point of his career.
Gladys Alvarez - CPP Rostered Therapist, Orchard Place
“Trauma Informed Care Project Coordinator Infant Mental Health Mentor-Clinical”
