Sidewalk Gap Analysis

Where are the gaps in sidewalk access?
The Sandy Springs City Council requested an analysis of sidewalk connectivity.
All city streets were classified by sidewalk access with an initial focus on Sidewalk Master Plan streets.
Selection Criteria & Process
● On Master Plan● Public Street Centerline● Sidewalk Access (one side, both sides, or none)● By Street Name● No breaks at intersections● GIS segments combined
Eyes from above
Aerial imagery from January 2015 was used to determine current sidewalk access.
(Thank you Fulton County!)
Converting Centerline to Gaps
How many feet of sidewalk do we need?
Estimating gap lengths along the shoulder from centerlines
One side Access
118’ centerline segment
x 1 gap
=
118’ sidewalk needed
There is one gap for each segment and the length of sidewalk is the same.
No Sidewalks
84’ centerline segment
x 2 gaps
=
168’ of sidewalk needed
There are two gaps for each segment so the length must be doubled

Identifying Targets
Gaps of less than 200 feet can typically be filled for less than $50,000.
