A Message from the President and General ManagerSeptember 2011
Dear Friends of the Sid,
Finally we are getting our Summer, and Fall seems just aroundthe corner! With our 2011 Fall Season, our Society embarks on itssecond decade of presenting national and international talent onour stage. So many wonderful memories ... and so many excitingexperiences to come!
We are hoping to do much that is fresh and new this season. Wewill have a new website come October, and a bright new look forour Season Guide Magazine. Please let us know what you think. Many thanks to Dave, Tim, Ryan and Keith at the CV Echo forsharing our vision for a new program look. We have also welcomedsome new Staff and Board members. There are also a few newoperational initiatives such as our new occupational health andsafety program.
But of course, what everyone really wants to hear about is ourshows. With only a few exceptions, our Fall 2011 and Spring 2012season features artists who have never been to the Comox Valleybefore: Seattle Opera, the Sojourners, Stephen Page, and theGrapes of Wrath ... to name a few. And those seasonal favourites
who are returning (such as Winterharp and Banff Films) will bebringing new material for their visit to the North Island. I amparticularly excited about the Seattle Opera young artists visit. Notonly is the Seattle Opera one of the most lauded opera companieson the West Coast, north of San Francisco, but this visit will also bea Vancouver Island exclusive!!!
On a sad note, the Sid lost one of our long time friends andsupporters with the recent passing of Craig Bickle. Our memoriesof him celebrating the building’s 75th anniversary last summer (itwas built by his Great Grandfather in 1935) with so many otherfriends of the Sid, we will cherish fondly. Our hearts go out to theBickle family.
The Sid is very fortunate to have so many friends and supporters, some with us in the present, some with us in spirit. We are all verylucky to live in such a vibrant and culturally diverse community. Atthe Sid we hope to match the diversity of our community with thediversity of our programming offerings. Please join us! And ...we’ll see you at the Sid!
Sincerely,Nicole Deters, President

Volunteer Appreciation NightOn August 10th, The Sid Williams Theatre hosted an appreciation night for
the many volunteers at the Sid. We began the evening with variety of hot andcold appys and dessert.
Many thanks to Atlas Café who provided mouthwatering hot appy platters;to Safeway who supplied us with tasty cold appy platters stacked full of meats, cheeses, pickles, potato salad and buns. Thrifty’s donated a sinfully delectablecake and Mudsharks Coffee Bar kindly provided their delicious coffee!
We then headed to the theatre where the evening began with Ronda Sproule(Concession Supervisor) who was our “Master of Ceremonies.” The volunteersgot a “Sneak Preview” of the new 2011/2012 Sid performances. Then the“chicken lady” aka Sherry Shaw (Ticket Centre Supervisor) made her appearanceon stage and everyone had a good laugh. The volunteers were then serenadedby Kenny Shaw and Brian Temple who donated their time to play a variety ofcountry music, including Roy Orbison songs; the crowd went crazy! Nicole Fifi, our Front of House Supervisor then jumped in to sing to her beloved volunteers. The night ended when our GM; Deb Renz raffled off gift certificates donated byThe Consumers Co-op, Titas Mexican Restaurant and 5th Street Florist.
The evening ended with every single volunteer receiving a small bag of“goodies” including a special shooting star pin in appreciation for their timeand effort in “making a difference” at the Sid Williams Theatre.

Our tickets aredistributed to a number of local social-service organizations when theybecome available. In fact, many of ourshow sponsors receive tickets specifically for this purpose… to give to thecommunity service organizations! Capital funding helps us to improve our physical infrastructure andtechnical capabilities. The ever changing technologies that have transpired inthe entertainment industry including significant innovations in computertechnology for sound, projection, lighting, and special effects, havecompletely changed the way artists use their creative tools.Funding allows the Society to purchase essential specialized equipment as
part of technical upgrades to allow the theatre to compete for the best music, theatre, and dance we can offer our local community and visitors. Upgradeswill meet the needs of today’s artists while improving the technical ability topresent exceptional artistic and cultural performances. Improvedinfrastructure will provide our patrons with richer cultural experiences. While there is some government support for equipment improvements at
community cultural facilities like the Sid, most of our new equipmentpurchases, including capital improvements to the building and facilities, inthe last 5 years have been thanks to donors.
THANK YOU!To Topstitch Upholstery located in Courtenay andCampbell River and to The City of Courtenay who

WHY SUPPORT ‘LIVE’ MUSIC?Because, ‘in making the decision to see live music, patronsare supporting both their local economy and, often times, their local arts. Making the trip to a venue to see an artistor band play is telling that venue, and that artist, thatyou care about quality in music. Coming to see an artistis support. Not only local bands — every popular act fromAerosmith to Buddy Guy depends on the support of the loyalfans that come to see them. Every musician, from a localguitar slinger to guitar god Jeff Beck, tirelessly hone theirskills and craft to bring the best show possible to the peoplethat come to be entertained. Each fan who comes helps togive an artist the encouragement and support to continue topush themselves artistically’. [Matt Marshall – June 3, 2011Posted in: Blues Articles, News].
Besides, we really like our music… Enjoy!

Courtenay Little Theatre presents
“Homechild”Between 1860 and 1948 over
80,000 children were brought to Can-ada in officially sanctioned childmigration programs. These children, mainly from orphanages or dysfunc-tional families, were often separatedfrom their relations forever. Somechildren were well treated, especiallythose that were adopted. However, many were placed in factories or farms where they were oftenexploited as indentured child labourers. Although their futurelay in Canada rather than the slums of Britain, the dreadful mis-treatment of so many of these children continues to remain a blot onthe history of our country.
In spite of its dark background, Homechild by JoanMacLeod is a wonderful, humorous and moving story. JoanMacLeod has thoroughly researched this powerful story andwrites with compassion, joy and laughter. CLT director RossStephanson is working with a talented and sympathetic cast whowill do full justice to this important part of Canadian history.Homechild is a play not to be missed! Performances are Sept. 30,Oct 1, 6, 7, 8 at 7:30pm and Oct 2 at 2:00pm at the Sid WilliamsTheatre in downtown Courtenay or purchase tickets on line –www.sidwilliamstheatre.comAbout Courtenay Little Theatre:
