♠The genre of the band’s music is generally classed as alternative rock.

♠The mise en scene in the music video is very darkly lit in quite a small bar, the dark lighting and the bar which is not in plain sight could reflect the often dark lyrics stereotype that rock music is ‘dark’.

♠The bar that is hidden from everyone could reflect upon the fact that, until recently, alternative rock music was quite an ‘underground’ genre, with only people who knew it was there listening to it.

Dress

•The costume in the music video is pretty average, with most people shirts and ties, though still managing to look quite informal.

•This could reflect upon the fact that the fashion within the ‘alternative’ genre evolved to a lot of people wearing shirts and ties with jeans.

•However, I think the costumes were used to portray a sense of normality within the people in the video, which ultimately contrasts to the storyline.

♠The lyrics establish a general feeling of sex and the way children now feel forced into growing up to soon.

♠The lyrics start off quite tame, then build up as the music does to the chorus which is angry and raw.

Music

♠As I said in the previous slide, the music starts of quite low then builds up to release a harder beat during the chorus.

♠The editing reflects on this as the tempo of the music is driving the movements on screen.

♠His movements start off quite slow and quizzical then build up to something brash and violent.

Intertextuality

♠There is actually quite a bit of intertextuality within this music video.

♠Spray painted on the wall here is the word ‘Sic’ which is obviously the first word of the song’s title.

♠The lamb on the door, and then again on the woman’s top is actually the director, Marc Webb’s, sign.

♠(Marc Webb also directed (500) Days of Summer and is set to direct the new Spiderman.)

Exhibitionism

♠The sense of exhibitionism and the ‘male gaze’ is somewhat subverted in this music video, as it isn’t the women who are intentionally invoking the male character’s attention, but he is controlling them to be provocative.
