Instrument Cluster Parts Identification Non-Tachometer Style

Step 2Remove these screws using a 4mm allen socket or allen wrench.

Step 1Turn the ignition switch to lock position and disconnect the negative battery cable.

Step 3Remove the instrument panel cover.

Step 4Remove the (2) glass lenses.

Caution: These are glass and will break easily.

Step 6Disconnect the driver side electrical connector.

Note: This Samurai has a Grant steering wheel which allows more room for the instrument cluster to be removed. If you have a stock steering wheel you will have even less room. It is hard but possible.

Step 5Carefully lift out the instrument cluster.

Caution: There are various electrical connections still connected to the back of the instrument cluster, so do not lift out too far yet.

Step 7Disconnect the passenger side electrical connector.

Step 8Unp lug the speedomete r cab le connector.

Step 9Lift out the instrument cluster a little farther. But, not all the way yet.

Step 10Unplug the two wires shown here.

Note: They are blue and red wires.

Step 11Remove the instrument cluster.

Step 12Carefully lay the instrument cluster on a work bench.

Note: It would be a good idea to place a cloth under the instrument cluster.

Step 14. . . . and pull out.

Step 13Remove the upper left lamp socket by twisting the socket counter-clockwise a quarter of a turn . . .

Step 15Remove the bulb by pulling it out of the socket.

Note: There is no twisting necessary. It simply unplugs. You my need to use a small pick tool to help pry out the bulb.

Step 16Insert the supplied blue light into the socket. Be sure it snaps into place.

Step 18Repeat Steps 13 through 17 on the other light sockets according to the illustrations shown below.

Step 17Install the socket back in its original location by inserting and twisting it clockwise until it locks.

Step 19Replace the instrument cluster in reverse order of removal. Be sure the red and blue wires are connected properly.

Tech Tip 19ABe sure the two electrical harness connections (one driver side and one passenger side) are inserted and seated correctly.

Tech Tip 19BBe sure the speedometer cable is positioned correctly into the back of the speedometer.

Step 20Reposition the instrument cluster and install the glass lenses.

Step 21Reposition the instrument cluster cover.

Step 22Reinstall the (4) mounting screws and tighten.

Caution: Do not over-tighten these screws. Just snug is enough.

Step 23Reconnect the battery.

Step 24Check all lamps for correct operation.

Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position, turn the headlights to the “ON” position (bright and dim), right and left turn signals, and all other warning light indicators as applicable.
