THE OPPONENT THROUGH THE EYES OF AN EMAD

Cheney, which posted a 7 -2 record in 2011 with a 0-1 postseason record, has six starters and 7 lettermen returning for the 2012 season. They come into tonight’s game against the

Sandpoint Bulldogs with a 1 -3 record so far this season. Their losses were to East Valley, Lakeland and Pullman and their win a 56-0 shutout against Omak. The team is coached by Jason Williams who has been at the school for 18 years and at the helm for the Cheney Blackhawks varsity team for the past 10. Prior to that, he served as defensive coordinator. Key newcomers include junior Andrew Graham, senior running back and linebacker Cameron Schlotter, junior Kyle Krieger who can be found at guard and tackle, junior Josh Arthur playing tight end, and junior Noah Ziemann who plays center and tackle. The team runs a spread offense and a 4-3 defense. Key players for the Cheney Blackhawks include senior Eric Igbinoba, a wide receiver and running back who, at 6’1” and 180 lbs., is reported to be fast on his feet

and has been first team all-league for the past two years. Another player the Bulldogs will be keeping a close eye on is senior linebacker and tight end Coleman White who is 6’0” and 195 lbs. He, along with senior Zach Corean, were both first team defense in 2011.Inexperience may prove to be the Cheney Blackhawk’s weakness while overall speed throughout the team is considered one of the team’s strengths.

The Sandpoint Bulldogs are determined to take the momentum from their win on the road in Timberlake last week, capitalize on the home field advantage and ring the victory bell at Memorial Field tonight. Go Bulldogs!

Matt lockeySenior Matt Lockey began playing football when he was in the 8th grade in Puyallup, WA. He moved to Sandpoint midway through his sophomore year and is in his second year playing for the Sandpoint Bulldogs. He is a

fullback and occasionally plays nose guard as well. He is enjoying this season and said the coaching staff has provided a lot of motivation. “They inspire us and give us hope to achieve better things than we have in the past,” said Matt.

In addition to football, Matt Lockey has also wrestled for the past seven years. Coach Puailoa has been his physical education teacher since Matt started at Sandpoint High School and Matt said Coach has helped him to not only become a better football player but has also helped him to improve as a wrestler.

After graduation Matt plans to become a firefighter. He will attend a 1 ½ year program at a fire academy in Texas where he will receive a degree in fire science. He said what appeals to him about the profession is his desire to help people. After receiving his fire science degree, Matt said he plans to stay in Texas for a while and one day will return to Sandpoint. When not attending school, playing football or wrestling, Matt said he spends his time studying and playing video games.

His advice to younger kids in the program: “Try their hardest and excel to the best of their abilities. . . During every play, sprint your hardest. It will make you much better. Become faster and always finish ahead of what you did previously,”

Justin PuryearJustin Puryear is in his sixth year of football in Sandpoint. He can be found playing middle linebacker and is the long snapper for the Sandpoint High School Bulldogs this season. He says he appreciates how disciplined and positive this year’s coaching

staff is. “They have a positive outlook on everything,” said Justin. “They are disciplined and are setting us up to become well educated young men.”

In addition to football, Justin has participated in baseball for the last 11 years and is also a handball player. He would love to pursue the possibility of playing college football. His current plans are to attend University of Idaho and get his degree in mechanical engineering, which explains why he lists science as his favorite subject in school.

In his free time, Justin enjoys skiing in the winter and spending time on beautiful Lake Pend Oreille in the summer. .

His advice to the younger players on the team is given after reflection of his high school years, “Do not take a single day for granted because your four years go by in a flash”

Justin WilkersonSenior Justin Wilkerson has been playing football since he was in the seventh grade. He plays linebacker for the Sandpoint High School Bulldogs, but says he has played several positions over the years including safety, corner back, and running back.

In addition to football, Justin has also played lacrosse since he was in the 8th grade. His hope is to attend the University of Idaho after graduation, and when asked what his favorite subjects are in school he responded with math and science. He would like to work in the medical field and said both dentistry and radiology are areas that interest him.

Justin is enjoying the season with the Bulldogs and said that each week his team is im-proving and said he credits the coaching staff with motivating him and his teammates. “I like how pumped up and enthusiastic they (the coaches) are,” said Justin. “They know their positions and they know what they are doing.” He said the mandatory study hall Coach Puailoa has instituted has been very helpful to many on the team. One benefit is that many of the coaches are also teachers and can provide students with the assistance they need not only on the field but off the field as well. Justin said he used to do a lot of snowboarding and hopes to do that once this football season is over. He is confident that with the team working together, they will continue to improve each game as they have thus far.

When asked what piece of advice he would offer to the younger players on the team, it was a message of effort. “When you go on the field, give every play one hundred percent because you don’t ever know what play will be your last.”

Devon Hancock Senior Devin Hancock has been participating in organized football since he was in the fifth grade. For the Sandpoint Bulldogs, Hancock said he plays nose guard, tackle and fullback. He also is the back up for the defensive end.

This year he is particularly enjoying the enthusiasm the coaching staff brings to the team.“I have been learning a lot,” said Devin. He has also been an avid baseball player throughout the years and was on the wrestling team as a freshman.

His post high school plans will likely include attending the University of Idaho where he wants to pursue a degree that will involve computers. But if he were to receive a scholarship to play football at any school, those plans could change.

His favorite subject at Sandpoint High School is government. He is currently taking AP Government and AP Statistics so he appreciates the extra time that the mandatory study hall provides to complete home work. In his spare time, Devin said he enjoys hanging out with his friends, snowboarding, and any activity that brings him outdoors.

When asked what his advice to younger kids in the football program is, his response is given after careful thought. “Make every moment in life count and do not let a single day go by without improving yourself in some way,”

Many of the Sandpoint High School Bulldog football players are recognized for their contribution to their team. We pick up the paper to read about the games, review the stats, find out who has been

named athlete of the week and are always impressed by many of these young men for what they do on the field. But it is what they do off the field that often goes unnoticed.

These young athletes, many of whom we may not recognize without a roster and a number to match them to a name, are all around our community making a difference in the lives of others. For instance there is freshman Isaac Nelson whose family has hosted a free Christ-mas event for the last four years. The family collects donated items and invites the community to then come and shop in their free Christmas store. They even offer free gift wrapping. Isaac is a very important part of that family tradition of giving to those in the community. In addition to this, Isaac is working on his Eagle badge for scouts, serves as a coun-selor at summer cub scout camp and also volunteers at Camp Invention at the Bird Aviation Museum. Senior Pete Slippy has also served as a volunteer assistant counselor at Camp Invention at the Bird Aviation Museum. When not playing football on Friday evenings, he can be found at Kootenai Community Church assisting with a community youth program known as AWANA. Pete helps kids ages kinder-garten through sixth grade during the game portion of the program. Another church activity that Pete is involved in is music. Every other Sunday Pete plays his bass guitar with the church band. “I enjoy playing bass at my church because I have always loved music and making music,” said Pete. “But the best part about playing bass at church is that I love being able to worship God through a guitar.” There are many young men who are also active in the local 4H program including junior Josh Travers and freshman Tyler Presser. Sophomore Matt Timothy spent fifteen days earlier this year in

Guatemala. He was part of a mission trip with Upper Columbia Academy. The group built a church in the city of Poptun.“I helped mostly with mixing concrete and laying brick,” said Matt. He said he really wanted to participate it this mission trip because he wanted to help a third world country. “And I wanted to have a closer relationship with God and spread God’s word,” said Matt. He said the bond he made with the Guatemalan children was truly a life changing experience. “They were so kind, accepting and appreciative of all we did for them,” said Matt.

And not only that, but the bond he made with the people with whom he traveled is something he will carry with him forever. “Doing a mission trip definitely gives you a different view of the world and makes you appreci-ate what you have,” said Matt. Senior McCall Miller has been in scouting since he was 8 years old. Two years ago he received his Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America scouting program. His Eagle Scout project included over fifty hours of work preparing the route for Sandpoint’s annual Scenic Half Marathon. He, along with others, painted the trail, cut grass and cleaned the path which stretched from Sagle Elementary School all the way to the Long Bridge. He shares a close bond with those in his scouting group. “We have had the same group since we were eight years old,” said McCall. In addition to scouts, he also volunteers to help elderly people in his church with yard

work, and also participated in helping the local food bank when he was younger. “I like being able to help and seeing that what I do makes a difference,” said McCall. So next time you see one of these young EMADs giving back to their community, stop and thank them. A little praise will go a long way, just as it does on the field.
