TANGIER STATED MEETING

There will not be a stated meeting or

dinner in July

Potentate’s MessagePotentate’s MessageTangier Shrine Center is open.

As most have either read or have heard we reopened on June 22, 2020. Our office is open and staffed; currently working summer hours. The lounge is open but there have been some changes. The Lounge hours of operation will be 12 noon until 10:00 PM Monday through Saturday. Closed on Sunday. Currently the lounge is not serving lunches.

With the recommendations from the State of Nebraska and Douglas County Health Department starting to be relaxed we were able to reopen our building and start to get back to some of the normal functions and events. Social distancing is highly recommended. Our clubs and units can conduct meetings and we will be able to run some of our fundraisers.

Numerous individuals have asked about parades. Currently we do not have any parades scheduled. Most have been canceled with some still undecided. Additionally, Central States Shrine Association Ceremonial Session in Springfield MO. has been canceled.

During this unprecedented worldwide health crisis, we are concerned about the health of our families, our fraternal family, our communities, our Shriners Hospitals patients, families and staff, and of course, ourselves.

Be safe, take care of your health, our families, our fraternal family, our communities and follow the advice of our Federal and State authorities during these difficult times. Hopefully, we will get through this soon and life as we knew it can get back to normal.

TANGIER “HOT SANDS”TANGIER “HOT SANDS”JULY 2020JULY 2020

ChantersBy: Bernie Hauber

For the last three months, the Chanters, along with all of Tangier, did not meet, nor did we practice. However in the times of social distancing, we exchanged email messages. Captain Virgil Johnson sent out an email blast in late May and let us know that practice was canceled in June and to plan for a July 6 practice.

I hope many of the readers have been receiving updates from the Potentate, specifically the fundraisers to help our General Fund. I personally enjoyed the smoked pork, the hot roast beef dinner, and hamburger dinner. The Chanters Unit does not participate in parades, and we have no organized competition in the CSSA. However, we were disappointed to hear that the 83rd Annual CSSA Convention was canceled due to the Covid-19 crisis.

When we meet again, there will be discussion about the “new normal” and its effect on possible performances this summer (August through September). If we find a way to perform and if there are public and Masonic Family events for which you would like us to sing, your request should be received early to verify our availability.

The Chanters hope to restart their weekly meeting and practice schedule. As is noted in the listing of Units & Clubs, we practice Monday in the Main Room at the Shrine Center. We usually start practice promptly at 7:00 pm. Any noble with even a small interest in singing and a willingness to join us should contact any Chanter or send an email to the Shrine Center. That’s my update for July.

“Those who wish to sing always find a song.” Swedish Proverb

Boone & CrockettBy: Charlie Binge

It’s July- the Shrine is now open! The Covid-19 pandemic placed a halt on many Shrine activities. We have been dark for three months and it’s time to start up again.

That being said, the B&C annual Fish Fry is coming up on Saturday, July 25th. Because of on-going safety measures we will be doing something different this year. The B&C Club will be doing a drive through this year rather than a regular sit down dinner. Hours for the drive through will be 4:00 - 7:00 pm. The menu will include fried fish, baked potato, sweet corn, coleslaw, and bread. Keep the date open for some great eating.

The annual B&C Gun Raffle was put on hold due to the pandemic but we will continue selling tickets now and will hold the drawing in the near future. There will only be 200 tickets sold at $100 each for the 12 gun raffle. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Fish fry drive through. Also available: 50/50 drawings and raffle tickets for cash and gift cards.

I just returned from fishing in Sheboygan, Wisconsin with my son and two grandsons on June 8th and had a successful and fun trip. We caught three king salmon, four lake trout, and 28 Steelhead or Rainbow Trout during our three days of fishing. We are still looking for a couple of fisherman to join us on August 31st and September 1st and 2nd for a fishing trip to Sheboygan. We will be fishing for the larger 20+ pound King Salmon.

The Boone & Crockett Club meets in the Shrine Center basement the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm for a short meeting and dinner afterward. Please feel free to come and join the Brothers and see what we are all about.

THINK MEMBERSHIP – visit your Blue lodge and bring a Brother into the Shrine.

Arbor ShrineBy: Don Larson

Here we are in the middle of the parade season and all parades have been canceled this year, along with other outside activities, and everyone is still somewhat being asked to stay home. The Tangier building is now open again and some activities will start to appear again.

Arbor Shrine Club Nobles and Ladies that have July birthdays on file are Richard Vlash, Jume McClure, and Linda Jeanneret.

Arbor Shrine Club is always looking for Nobles interested in joining the Club. If anyone is interested, please contact a member.

By: Tony Johnson

I hope this finds everyone safe and healthy. The Keystone Kops are excited to be able to see each other in June and really do miss doing the Parades.

If you would like to come see what we are about, please contact Chief Joe Burtzel, his number is in the Hot Sands.

We also meet on the second Friday of each month at 7:30 pm.

Take care and see you all soon.

By: Tom E

Greetings from the Shrine Bowl Unit. I hope you and yours have stayed safe and healthy. We’re looking forward to Tangier’s reopening and hopefully getting back to doing what Shriners do.

Just a few quick updates to share. The bus will be taken out of storage soon for maintenance, cleaning, and a few repairs including the air conditioning. We can take advantage of this down time and get it prepped for next year’s parade season. We would like to have a unit meeting in July so stay tuned for more details.

I wish there was more to report on but that is all I have right now. We will have more announcements coming soon. Stay safe and healthy.

Daughters of the Nile

By: Roxanne Mrasek, Queen

Another month of social distancing and staying at home. I hope this finds you all safe and healthy.

Our session for the visit of the Supreme Queen Heather Krastins-Lambert as we normally know it has been canceled. Her visit on June 25th will be with me and the Recorder to go over the books.

Our first fundraiser for the year will (hopefully) be “Lunch with Peter Sarpy” on July 26. Peter Sarpy was the first Mason in Nebraska and he’ll be giving us a presentation on the History of Nebraska after lunch. A friend and longtime Mason, Daryl Draper has donated his talents for this opportunity to raise money for our kids. More details on menu and cost coming soon.

Our First Session in PERSON will be August 1, 2020. Hopefully, the Health directives will allow. We will have at least one practice before so our new officers will feel comfortable. Practice will be on Wednesday, July 29. If there is need for another, it will be on July 30th.

Other fundraisers for August are still pending. Because the CHiP program is not available this year, the event on August 9 will not be the Kid’s Carnival but instead we are doing something different – a Food Truck Rodeo! Come see what different types of food are available.

The Bunco Bash for August 16, is still up in the air… More to come later!

Now for a Smile: What is the opposite of isolate? Of course… Yousoearly!

NE Shrine Bowl co-captain Nickolas Kreikemeier is the youngest child of Neil and Amy Kreikemeier was born in 2009 with no fingers on either of his hands. He was also born with an underdeveloped right foot that is a size smaller than his left. Nick started going to Shriners Hospital for Children in Minneapolis when he was six months old. Shriners Hospital has done so much for Nick in the last nine years. Nick has received surgery on his left foot, prosthesis for bike riding and Baseball, and a shoe filler for his smaller right foot, which allows him to wear the same size of shoe for each foot. Nick also receives help from the Occupational Therapy Department at Shriners Hospital which have helped him be as independent as possible. Through Shriners Hospital, Nick has also had the opportunity to learn how to ski and meet other kids with limb differences through Winter Camp Achieves. Nick looks forward to our yearly trips to Minneapolis and is excited to see everyone at the hospital. We want to say Thank You to Shriners for everything they have done for Nick and continue to do.

Please see new dates and updated information below.Watch for updates as the guidelines around sporting events are still changing

There will be No Parade at the Shrine Bowl this year.

Thousands of children sustain burn injuries in their homes every year. Many of these injuries could have been prevented. Here are some safey tips to help keep your children - and you - safe at home:

Safety All Through the Home:• Use electrical outlet covers.• Unplug electrical appliances when not in use.• Install an appropriate number of smoke

detectors - one near each bedroom, one at the top of each stairway and one near the planned escape route.

• Teach your children that matches are a tool, and not a toy. Keep matches out of reach of younger children, and allow older children to use them only when supervised.

• Store all flammable liquids properly.• Store all chemicals and cleaners out of reach of

children, or lock the cabinet.• Have the electrical wiring in your house checked

professionally every 10 years.• Have the fireplace and chimney inspected every year

before the cold weather season.• Replace damaged electrical cords.• Do not leave lighted candles unattended.• Gasoline has only one purpose: to fuel an engine. Safety in the Kitchen and Dining Area:• Always supervise children in the kitchen and

dining area.• Keep children away from everything that is hot.• If young children are in the home, use placemats

rather than tablecloths.• Keep all hot items and anything electrical out of reach

of children and away from edges of tables and counters.

• Establish a kid-free zone, where young children can be watched but are safely out of the kitchen while cooking is being done.

• Do not use deep-fryers with children present.• Keep pot handles turned inward; use oven mitts or

pot holders. Keep clothing from coming into contact with flames or heating elements.

• Store all chemicals and cleaners out of reach of children, or lock the cabinet.

• Follow instructions and cautions for heating items in a microwave oven.

• Avoid area rugs in the kitchen.• Do not handle hot items while holding young children.

Safety in the Bathroom:• Have a latch-bolt on the outside of the bathroom

door so young children cannot enter the bathroom unsupervised.

• Always supervise children in the bath.• The water in a child’s bath should not exceed 104° F.

Set your water heater no higher than 120° F.• Run cold water in the tub first, and then add

warmer water.• Before placing a child in the tub, test the water

temperature by moving your hand through the water.• If the water feels hot, it is too hot for a child.• When placing a child in the bathtub, face them away

from the faucets and as close to the other end of the tub as possible.

• If you let your children play with toys while in the bathtub, do not leave them unattended.

• Consider not permitting toys in the bathtub.

Safety Planning in Case a Fire Does Occur:• Have an escape plan, including two exits from each

room, in place.• Practice using the plan.• Have a designated meeting place at a safe distance

from the home.• Call 911 in the case of an emergency.

“Let Us Show You How Home Remodeling is Supposed To Be”

Chad and Kory grew up Elkhorn in the 80’s riding big wheels together. Now they have traded in their big wheels for Black Carp’s Trucks and remodeling homes in the Omaha Metro Area.

Keeping homeowners happy, comfortable, and informed is an integral part of our business practices. We are a locally homegrown business that will be here for you when you need us and make your remodeling experience an enjoyable and affordable one that you will be able to enjoy for years to come. With Carp’s you get the advantages of a large one-stop shop with the customer service you might find at a smaller company. We started with one man and an idea of how, to do things the right way the first time around.

Our customers contact us when they want to deal with one company that can take care of all of their service and project needs.

We don’t profit by overcharging and getting cheap labor and moving on to the next project. We believe that it is vital to have homeowners involved in every step of the process.

Irene Hand Roberts just turned 103 and as far as we know, she is the oldest living Shriners Hospitals for Children patient! Irene was born on April 28, 1917, at her grandmother’s restaurant and boarding hotel in McLaughlin, South Dakota. In July 1923, at the age of 6, Irene developed what was called infantile paralysis, but is now known as polio. The Hand family and local doctors tried many remedies to help Irene, but they

were all unsuccessful. Irene’s luck changed when a small-town horse-and-buggy doctor named Dr. Twining, who by chance was a Shriner, referred Irene to the newly opened Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Minnesota, thus beginning Irene’s long and very hard road to recovery.
