We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.
January 13, 2013 The Baptism of the Lord
Director of
Advancement
About 18 years ago, Shrine Parish embarked
on a strategic plan to ensure that our parish
schools would survive beyond the year 2000. That
initial planning not only assured our survival, but it
has played a major role in making sure our
schools are strong in their Catholic identity and
academic excellence. About 15 years ago, we
carried out a needs assessment and developed a
Master Plan of development related to parish
and school buildings and properties.
In the intervening years, 3 neighboring schools
have had to close, and now 8 neighboring
parishes are slated to become 3 within the next
few years. We as a parish are now working in
close collaboration with Saint Mary Parish Royal
Oak to support and strengthen one another. The
continued growth and development of Shrine as
a strong and vibrant parish does not just happen.
It takes planning, hard work, and the generous
participation of everyone.
In an effort to keep us growing into the future,
the Parish Finance Council recommended a
strong department of advancement for the
parish, the schools, and the pastoral ministry of
Shrine. After an evaluation of a number of very
strong candidates, we are pleased to announce
a new Director of Advancement.
Please join me in welcoming our new Director
of Advancement, Cynthia Grzelak.
Cynthia will be responsible for the oversight
and coordination of all Parish and School
fundraising efforts, with primary responsibility for
creating, implementing, managing and
evaluating Shrines Strategic Development Plan.
Cynthia Grzelak is a licensed fundraising
professional, with over 30 years experience, who
has worked predominantly with human service
and/or faith based organizations, including
Catholic schools and parishes. Her expertise
includes strategic planning, feasibility studies,

For you who may have missed this last week
Thank you for Your Advent Giving Tree Gifts
Your generous donations made Christmas wonderful for so many, many people in
need! The money was distributed to those who asked us to please help them re-
spond to the needs of those they serve at Christmas and into this New Year. We may
not see their faces, but God does and God knows our giving hearts! More than
$16,000 was donated through the Giving Tree in cash, gift cards, new story books,
socks, baby items, and food gifts. The letters of gratitude would make you so happy
as you read them, and there are so many.
May Jesus fill your life with what you most need during this new year! Let us pray
for a Happy, Hope-filled New Year for our recipients and for one another!

Kairos
This week more than 100 members of our very own Shrine Catholic High School will
be involved in a Kairos Retreat. This is a very special time for our students to grow
closer to Christ and become stronger in their faith. Please keep them in your prayers
throughout this entire week.
Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley
This warm January thaw has Lord Stanley thoroughly confused. Where is the
SNOW? He loved the snow and now it is gone. I think he is secretly praying for the
return of the snow in record proportions. If the snow does not come back, it can only
mean one thing to him, TIME TO GO SWIMMING!

Thank You From St. Vincent de Paul
To all the teachers, students, staff and parents of the Religious
Education Department ( preschool-elementary) and Shrine Grade
School we thank you for filling the Thanksgiving and Christmas
baskets to the brim with food items for the families' Holiday
tables. St. Vincent de Paul added gift cards and supermarket
food vouchers. The families were most appreciative and gave us
hugs which we pass on to you. We also would like to thank Dennis Peel and his
daughter, Allison, for assisting us in the delivery of the baskets.
Gratefully, St. Vincent de Paul
