Sisters of Charity Thank You Thank you for the beautiful celebration and sincere gratitude offered on behalf of our Sister-in-community, Sister Patricia Marie. The Mass concelebrated by Monsignor Easton, Fathers Prus and Lang, the beautiful reception provided by the

Ladies Guild, and the individual gifts you have made to the Sisters of Charity or the Sister Patricia Marie Scholarship are deeply appreciated. May Sister Patricia Marie, in her new life in God, bless this community in ever new ways in the years ahead.

Baked to Perfection The National Shrine Ladies Guild Board thanks all those who prepared special cookies for our receptions, and the women who so faithfully bake cakes for our Funeral Luncheon ministry. Thank you,

Ladies! What talent and generous spirits you have!

The Holy 3 Days Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 1, 2, and 3, 2010, are the 3 most important days of the Church Liturgical Year. Our Lenten preparation culminates in the celebration of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is

His Hour. This is the reason He came. This is the apex of Salvation History for all time. As believers, we must make these 3 days truly holy for ourselves, our families, and our community.

The liturgies of the Sacred Triduum are not a historical reenactment of the events of the past. We are not trying to recreate what it was like to be in the upper room, or on Golgotha, or in front of the tomb as the stone rolled away. The events are

historical, but they cannot be recreated. What we are doing is celebrating the mystery of our salvation in Christ Jesus. It is “Sacred Mystery” (anamnesis) and not history (mimesis) that we celebrate. The liturgies of these 3 days do not “take us back” to a former time. They are not meant to retrace or relive the last hours and moments of Jesus’ life.

We celebrate now and what is happening now, not what once happened. It is

not about long ago and far away. It is about right here and right now. Through His passion, death, and resurrection, Jesus saves us now from sin and death.

On Holy Thursday we celebrate Christ’s presence with us body, blood, soul, and divinity in the gift of the Eucharist. When people refer to the Eucharist as “the bread” I want to scream. Once consecrated the Eucharist is “THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST.” This is the Lamb of God, the Lamb of the new Passover from sin

and death.

On Good Friday we celebrate the true redemptive mystery of suffering. Christ died for us. Through His suffering and death He brings forth life.

On Holy Saturday we celebrate with those who are baptized, received into the Church, and confirmed in the Holy Spirit. Those baptized are freed from sin and

death sharing in the eternal life of the Risen Christ. They begin to share in His life which cannot and will not come to an end. We rejoice with the newly baptized and renew our own commitment to Christ in the Easter Proclamation of our baptismal promises.

These are the 3 most important days of the year. Make every effort you can to attend as much of these great liturgies as you possibly can.

Penance Service Our last Lenten Penance Service is Tuesday night at 7:30 pm. There will be additional priests available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The confession of our sins is a most appropriate way to prepare for the celebration of the Triduum and Easter.

Rosie & Carlito Rosie has been going for long walks with me and also with Father Nowak. Many

days she gets to go on 2 long walks. However, the walks do not seem to affect her weight. I suspect that she is getting too many treats in between the walks. We may have to extend the Lenten penance of “NO TREATS” through the Easter Season. OK we will give her a break on Easter Day.

Mass Intentions Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "God has so humbled Himself for us."

- St. Teresa Margaret Redi

"...He went out into the night. He did not fear

the chaos, did not hide from it, but plunged into its

deepest point, into the jaws of death: Faith always

means going out together with Jesus, not being afraid of the

chaos, because He is the stronger one. He 'went out' and we

go out with Him if we do the same. Faith means emerging

from the walls to build places of faith and love in the midst of

the chaotic world by the power of Jesus Christ. ...He went out

into the night of Gethsemane, the night of the cross and the

grave. ...The love of God -God's power-is stronger than the

powers of destruction. ...He summons us to dare to

accompany Him on His path; for where faith and love are, He

is there, and the power of peace is there which overcomes

nothingness and death. "

- Pope Benedict XVI, Benedictus

Life Matters “Our dignity and quality of life don't come from what we can or cannot do. Dignity and quality of life are not matters of efficiency, proficiency and productivity. They come from a deeper place --

from who we are and how we relate to each other.” (Fr. Rosica). April 2 will be the fifth anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II. In an interview with ZENIT in May 2007, Father Thomas Rosica answered the question “What can the world learn from the way Pope John Paul II lived his death?”

¨ John Paul II showed us true dignity in the face of death. Rather

than hide his infirmities, as most public figures do, he let the whole world see what he went through in the final phase of his life.

¨ Before the cameras, John Paul II taught that although science can ease discomfort, palliative care should not be used as a cloak to hide the fact of dying.

¨ As the curtain was about to fall, nothing made him waver, even the debilitating sickness hidden under the glazed Parkinsonian mask, and ultimately his inability to speak and move.

¨ Pope John Paul has become a living "argument" for the appeal to respect the most frail and vulnerable, who he upheld during his pontificate.

¨ Who can say his life was not fruitful, when his body was able to climb snow-capped summits or vacation on Strawberry Island in Lake Simcoe in 2002, during World Youth Day in Canada?

¨ Who didn't feel the paradoxical influence of his presence, when his voice was muted?

¨ In our youth-obsessed culture, Pope John Paul II reminded us that aging and suffering are a natural part of being human.

¨ Where the old and infirm are so easily put in homes and forgotten, the Pope was a powerful reminder that the sick, the handicapped and the dying have great value. John Paul II taught us how to live, to suffer and to die.

During this upcoming Holy Week, it is most appropriate to spend some time contemplating Christ’s suffering for us; why we are called to at times to suffer and how this speaks specifically to the Church’s teaching on euthanasia and assisted suicide. United with our Lady of Sorrows, let us pray this week for all those that suffer; that they may be lifted from despair and come to know in faith the

redemptive meaning of their suffering.

Lending Library Holy Week! The book, Friends of God: Homilies by

Josemaria Escriva, contains

d o w n t o e a r t h reflections. For instance, "Now it is the Last Supper. Christ has prepared everything to bid farewell to his disciples, while they, for the umpteenth time, have become embroiled in an argument about which

one. . . is to be considered the greatest. Jesus then, rising from supper . . . began to wash the feet of his disciples . . . Once again, he preaches by example, by his deeds." (p. 90). (Section 8, Saints).

Lending Library hours are Sundays from

10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). For information call Kathy McGuire at 248.541.6834 or JoAn Gilleran at

Palm Sunday: The Hidden Miracles of Jerusalem Passover is the highest holyday for the Jewish people. It recounts an earlier time during

the dark days of captivity in Egypt when Yahweh sent angels of death to destroy the

firstborn throughout the land in response to Pharaoh’s hardened heart. However, the

messengers of death passed over those whose door posts were marked with the blood of a

sacrificial lamb.

The triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the memory of the Passover

was to be the highpoint in his public life. This would be the closest the chosen people would

come to recognizing their Messiah. It would be his shining hour, a time of excitement when

for a fleeting moment, crowds would welcome him as their King and Savior. All four gospels

contain this account of Jesus’ triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. Clearly, it had been a

major event, a powerful moment of decision. The Jewish people were celebrating the

memory of a great miracle, but missed truly the greatest miracle ever promised – the coming of the Messiah. This

tragic mistake was not an isolated moment frozen in time. It was a tragic lost opportunity to recognize Jesus then,

and even after he rose from the dead. They would not ask for faith, so they could not see the fulfillment of their

dreams. Unfortunately, such lost opportunities to recognize the presence and miracles of Jesus continue in our lives

and in our times, as well.

Not all of Jesus’ miracles are immediately evident. We too must pray for the eyes of faith to see them. Take the

hidden miracle that occurred right in front of everyone at the triumphal entrance into the holy city. Did you notice

it? St. Mark and St. Luke did and recorded it in their gospel narratives. “… He (Jesus) sent two of his disciples on an

errand with these instructions: ‘Go to the village facing you, and just as you enter it, you will find tied a foal on which

no man has ever sat. Unhitch it and bring it here.’ … They brought the foal to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it;

and he seated himself on it.”

Could another person have ridden this foal, never before ridden, in such a noisy and hectic setting? No! It was

the Lord of Creation, the Prince of Peace, the King of Israel, the Messiah, The Son of God who did. This was the

culmination of the greatest promise foretold throughout the ages of the Old Testament, and for most everyone in

the crowd on that day, they missed him and another miracle. Why? They missed him because they did not listen nor

see with the eyes and ears of faith.

Each of us moves steadily closer on our personal journey to Jerusalem and the Cross. As we do, we pray for the

grace to see the miracles of Jesus in our own lives and times, for this too is a world filled with far too much noise, too

many distractions, and more temptations than we could ever count. As we enter Holy Week to relive what Jesus did

to show his love for us, remember those three words from the beginning of Lent: Believe, Trust, and Pray. Pray for the

grace to believe with your whole being that Jesus is Lord, The Son of God, and trust that everything He said is true.

The glory and promise of Easter awaits all who believe. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. In my Father’s house

there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for

you? And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you

may also be. …I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete.”Jn 14:1-4, 15:11

Roamin’ with Rosie

Greetings friends:

We are almost through with Lent, and I can’t wait to start having my dozen or so treats a day again.

Last week, I told you that I was standing by one of the tallest parts of the building. Did you figure out

where I was? If you guessed the Charity Tower, you are correct. On the tower is Jesus. His crucified

body stands over 28 feet tall!!! There are many images and inscriptions in this area. Below Jesus’ feet,

for example, are seven key scriptural passages from the crucifixion. “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are

doing,” is one. “This day, thou shall be with me in paradise,” is another. There are also images of the whip, tunic and dice, cock

and the crown.

Many find that looking at the tower is inspiring. They notice the detail in Christ’s face and feel something stir inside. As

Lent comes to a close, take some time in good weather to look at the tower and meditate on what Christ did for you. Or when

you drive by, notice Jesus and thank God for all that He’s done.

By the way, do you know who is standing at the bottom of the cross on the tower? Who else is looking at Jesus from across

the patio area? Please email me your thoughts at [email protected].

Faith Direct Your generosity to National Shrine of the Little Flower truly helps our parish extend God's loving presence to those among us who are most in need. During this season of Lent, I pray you will enroll with Faith Direct.

This commitment to recurring electronic giving will not only provide our parish with the consistent resources that help us with the operating needs

of National Shrine of the Little Flower but in turn provide you with the convenience of automatic deduction from your specified checking account or credit card.

There is no cost to you to enroll. Please enroll today by visiting www.faithdirect.net and our parish code is MI16.

Attention all Parishioners Holy Thursday, the night of the Last Supper, holds special meaning for all priests as it is considered to be the inception of priesthood in

the Catholic Church. The National Shrine Vocations Committee invites you to show your appreciation for the priests in our parish for all they do in supporting our faith community by sending them a kind word, a card, or letter of thanks on Holy Thursday. Please, no gifts. As we all know,

the demands on the clergy are always increasing and their numbers are decreasing. We encourage you to affirm their hard work and dedication with a simple thank you. We wish you a blessed and joyous Easter, and we ask you to continue to pray for religious vocations. Please let

our priests know you care.

Grade School Happenings

Library

Shrine Catholic students celebrated Reading Month with a different theme each week! One week we “jazzed up our week with a good book” by wearing a “jazzy” pair of fun socks. Another theme was “Reading is a bright idea!”

Everyone brought a favorite pair of sunglasses to wear during reading time. Our final week theme was “We’ve got an appetite for reading!” The students all enjoyed a snack while reading with their classmates.

Reading is an exciting and on-going activity at Shrine. Our after-school Readers’ Clubs are in full wing. Third graders are reading about inventors. The fifth graders are reading novels which will eventually be turned into scrapbook pages for Mrs. Popp, and Mrs. Hazen’s sixth graders are engaged in literature circles.

We also are supporting Shrine High School and Academy with their Borders Book Store Book Fair. Vouchers have been distributed to all families which can be used when purchasing books at Borders March 26-28. Let’s all support Shrine Catholic with a good book!

All Around the Academy

Marc Miller, seventh grade Academy student, brought home the Bronze for the Academy during the final days of the Optimist speeches competition.

Congratulations, Marc!

Academy students were treated from Michigan writer, Terry Wooten.

Students worked with Wooten during a valuable in-house writing workshop over the course of two days. Wooten shared anecdotal accounts of his struggles with dyslexia and his memories of school days gone by. In his message, Wooten inspired students to overcome any learning or personal obstacles so that they may move ahead with their education and their lives.

In the meantime, 8th grade Literature students are moving ahead with their reading of the classic novel, To Kill a

Mockingbird, while seventh grade students continue to embrace the Academy's new accelerated math program. First quarter results look encouraging.

Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions

March 2010 World Economy

General: That the world economy may

be managed according to the principles of justice and equity, taking account of

the real needs of peoples, especially the poorest.

The Churches in Africa

Missionary: That the Churches in Africa

may be signs and instruments of reconciliation and justice in every part of

that continent.

A Family Perspective

“Father forgive them, they know not what they do.” Frequently we offend

each other without being aware of it. The survival of relationships depends on our ability to forgive one another. This Holy Week, imitate Jesus and forgive those who have wronged you.

Stop carrying resentment in your heart.

- Bud Ozar
