Today, on 25th July 2010 is the sacred dayof Guru Purnima which is a festival

traditionally celebrated by Hindus, and on

this day, devotees offer puja (worship) totheir Guru (Spiritual Guide). It falls on theday of full moon, Purnima, in the month of

Ashadh (June-July) of the Hindu calendar.Traditionally the festival is celebrated in the

honour of sage Vyasa, who is seen one ofthe greatest gurus in ancient Hindu

traditions, and a symbol of Guru-shishyaparampara. Vyasa was not only believed tobe been born on this day, but also started

Swami Sivananda recommends:"Wake up at Brahmamuhurta (at 4 a.m.) on

this most holy day. Meditate on the lotusfeet of your Guru. Mentally pray to him for

his Grace, through which alone you canattain Self-realisation. Do vigorous Japa

and meditate in the early morning hours."After bath, worship the lotus feet of yourGuru, or his image or picture with flowers,fruits, incense and camphor. Fast or take

only milk and fruits the whole day.In the afternoon, sit with other devotees of

your Guru and discuss with them the gloriesand teachings of your Guru.

"Alternatively, you may observe the vow ofsilence and study the books or writings ofyour Guru, or mentally reflect upon his

teachings. Take fresh resolves on this holyday, to tread the spiritual path in

accordance with the precepts of your Guru."At night, assemble again with other

devotees, and sing the Names of the Lordand the glories of your Guru. The best form

of worship of the Guru is to follow histeachings, to shine as the very embodimentof his teachings, and to propagate his glory

and his message."

There is a beautiful story told about a manwho wanted to walk on water. He beggedhis guru to give him a secret mantra or aspecial boon so he could complete this

remarkable feat. The man was extremelypious and devoted, and he had been in hisgurus service for many years. Therefore,

the guru gave him a leaf, folded many timesuntil it was very small. He told his disciple,Within this leaf is a secret formula which

will enable you to walk on water. However,

you must not open it because the formulainside is a secret.

So the man agreed, and he takes the foldedleaf carefully in his hands and begins his

journey across the river. He is walking finewhen suddenly he is overcome by curiosity.

What could be this secret formula? Is therereally a secret inside? Is it a powder or astone or some holy mantra printed? Wheredid his guru get it? His doubts get the best

of him and he begins slowly to open the leafas he walks, careful lest any of the secret

formula should spill out into the water. Assoon as he unfolds the last piece to unveil

the secret, he suddenly sinks into the waterand drowns. Inside the leaf was written the

simple word, faith.It was not the leaf, nor any secret powder or

mantra that enabled the devotee toaccomplish a miracle. It was the strength of

his faith in his guru and in the boon hisguru had given him. As soon as that faithwavered and doubt crept in, his life was

lost. This is the power of faith.At this time of Guru Purnima, we must lookat what really makes up the Guru-Disciplerelationship what makes it so special, so

unique, so powerful and life-transforming?That answer is faith. Faith can work

true miracles and without it, much oflife is futile. The guru might be ofinfinite power, knowledge and

compassion. Yet, without the faith ofthe disciple, the guru can do very

little for him.

Though Baba initially objected to Hisworship, however He agreed after Shyama'srepeated plea. Meantime, Noolkar referredthe calendar and the day wasGurupoornima. That is the Birthday of

Vedavyasa, a great sage who sub-divided

the Vedas and gifted the treasure ofspiritual wisdom to humanity. Baba felt it

befitting to worship the Great Teacher.Then, Tatya, Dada Khelkar and Shyamatogether offered clothes to Sai and

worshipped Him. Since then it became acustom to celebrate Guru Pooja in Shirdi.But, why did Baba ask them to worship apillar? In the eyes of a scholar, everyone is adivine form. In fact, it is the ground pillarthat bears the weight of the entire roof of a

house. In Baba's words, it is to worship thepillar-like image of the Guru in a desiredmanner. Moreover, Sai revealed toSaranananda that He did penance in the

cave under the Masjid pillar for severalyears. Sainath is the Cosmic Pillar who

holds the Universe symbolized asDwarkamayi, which shelters all, throws itsdoors open to all beings, forever, for thefulfilment of the values of life.
