A Message from the President

Dan Scurlock

The February meeting was held on the evening of Friday, February 17 before a large crowd of geologists and wine consumers. This is the fourth year in a row that Kevin Hill has presented a geology and wine program. Although I was unable to attend this year, reports are that Kevin again did a great job. He and Jason Joyce (Winemaker at Calcareous Vineyard) presented the program on the Geology and Wine of Paso Robles, CA. I would like to thank Kevin for all the time and effort he puts into this event. It is my understanding that he practices (tasting wine) all year in preparation.

rdThe March meeting will be back on the regular schedule (3 Tuesday of the month) at 11:30 on March 20. Richard Adams will present the program titled “Regional Depositional Systems of the Woodbine, Eagleford and Tuscaloosa of the U. S. Gulf Coast”. Please get your reservations in early to Morris Nichols at 318-425-0101 or

(reservations received the morning of the meeting are not early). If you have a good suggestion for a program next year (2012-13), email it to me and I will forward it to next year's Program Chairman.

The geological kit owned by the Shreveport Geological Society and used by members to make presentations to schools is still missing. Matthew Chumley will oversee the replacement of the kit and he is formulating a list of items to place in the kit. Donations (money or items) to the new kit would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Matthew ( ) or any member of the Board if you wish to help with this project.

Bill Meaney has scheduled a continuing education program for May 7, 2012. Dr. John M. Holbrook from Texas Christian University will present a one day program on “Fluvial Stratigraphy”. The program

thwill be held at the Petroleum Club on the 15 floor. Attendance will be limited to the first 75 paid registrations.

In November, the Shreveport Geological Society nominated Bill Meaney to the Office of the Governor to serve on the Louisiana Board of Professional Geoscientists. Bill recently received word that the governor had approved his appointment.

If you have any news or announcements for society members that need to be put on the website or newsletter, contact Kevin or Rachel Hill. Go to the SGS website at any chance you get and see what's new.

The Spring Fling has been scheduled for May 5. Mark that date on your calendar and plan to attend. Further details will be available at a later date.

Biography

Rich Adams was born and raised in northern Indiana. He received a MS in Geology with Honors from Indiana University in 1973 and a MS in Geology from the University of Wisconsin- Madison in 1975. He worked for Exxon Company, USA in New Orleans from 1975 to 1979 and moved to The Woodlands, Texas to work for Mitchell Energy and Development Company from 1979 to 1999. In 2000 he joined Carr Resources, Inc. in Tyler Texas where he still works today.

Rich has published several papers on the uses of basement tectonics in both exploration and development geology. In his current employment with Carr Resources he and John Carr are actively exploring the East Texas Basin and surrounding areas using his ideas on basement tectonics to help guide the company's exploration effort.

Rich currently lives near Lindale, Texas with his wife Marsha. He enjoys hunting, fishing, golf, and, believe it or not, work.

preserved fourth and fifth order cycles. The Woodbine interval (Early Cenomanian) of East Texas, is a regressive system capped by a lowstand unconformity; herein named the Eagleford Unconformity. The following late Cenomanian to early Turonian transgressive system is the Eagleford/SubClarksville interval; the Tuscaloosa of Louisiana and Mississippi. A minor unconformity separates the Eagleford/SubClarksville interval from the overlying Austin Chalk. On the South Texas and Louisiana shelves, the regressive Woodbine Group equivalent is absent due to non-deposition and erosion.

The Laramide Orogeny in Central Mexico folded the Gulf Coast into a series of uplifts and basins. The East Texas Basin was the deepest basin of these; preserving the greatest volume of Woodbine-aged sediments. Long-shore currents redistributed lower Woodbine sediments from the emergent Sabine Uplift, to the south and southwest into a large peninsula that partially closed off the mouth of the East Texas Basin (Harris Delta). Sedimentological evidence proves that the Eagleford/SubClarksville sands of Madison and Brazos Counties were carried from the northwest by the paleo-Brazos River, and are not local reworking of the Harris Delta sands.

The south Texas “Eagleford Shale” is a late Cenomanian to early Turonian transgressive shale that accumulated in shallow silled basins. The “Eagleford Shale” of Burleson, Grimes and Brazos Counties is actually the regressive early Cenomanian Lower Woodbine Maness Shale preserved in anoxic silled basins behind the Lower Cretaceous Shelf margin.

Highlights from the

SGS Fourth Annual

Geology and Wine Dinner

More than 80 geology and wine fans crowded the sixteenth floor of the Petroleum Club on Friday, February 17, for the Shreveport Geological Society's annual dinner meeting. This year, Kevin Hill presented “The Geology and Wine of Paso Robles, CA” with the help of honored guest Jason Joyce, winemaker at Calcareous Vineyards in Paso Robles.

The evening began with a 2008 Chardonnay served chilled in glasses ordered specially for the event, which had Joyce's Calcareous logo on one side and Hill's HGC logo on the other.

From left: Carol Shiels, Lynn Allen, Tanya Allen, and David Shiels enjoy a welcome glass of Chardonnay before the lecture begins.

Hill called the meeting to order, and everyone took a seat for the lecture and tasting portion of the event.

“We all know

California has its faults,” Hill began, drawing a laugh from most of the attendees. He went on to describe the geology of the state in general and Paso Robles in particular, before handing the microphone over to expert winemaker Jason Joyce.

Joyce said he is proud of the geological science that lends itself so well to the art of winemaking. Calcareous Vineyards sits on soil rich in limestone, which is a hallmark of great vineyards worldwide, Joyce said.

He recounted a story of his start at Calcareous. Joyce said he first thought the white rocks sitting amongst the vines were limestone, but he found out from a visiting geologist that they were actually just shale. Spurred on by his

background in chemistry, Joyce took a shovel out into the vineyard and dug down several feet to find limestone, whose identity he verified by dropping it in a glass of acid. You can see the video at calcareous.com.

Joyce shipped soil and rock samples, as well as eight of his finest wines, from California for the event.

After Hill's lecture and Joyce's presentation and guided tasting, an additional white and red wine were poured to go with a delicious dinner prepared by Chef Eddie Mars. The menu included andouille carpaccio with roast tomato confit and crostinis with country pate and poached quail egg to start. Next, an asparagus bisque paired nicely with the Calcareous 2008 Viognier. The clever chef served elk brisket alongside the winemaker's “Moose Estate Syrah” for the main course. Then a salad featuring California cheeses preceded a warm almond apple galette: both dishes gave a nod to the produce of the Paso Robles region.

We hope to see you next year for another crowd-pleasing geology and wine dinner!

At the end of the evening, Hill presented Joyce with a plaque from the SGS and a t-shirt from this year’s Mock Dig, and all the attendees took home their tasting glasses with the Calcareous and Hill Geophysical logos.
