The two-hour spectacle will feature 75 entertainers, and will be in South Africa for 20 weeks. According to producer Michael Edgley, the show is “bigger and better”. “Forget everything you have ever heard about the circus and prepare yourselves for an unbelievable new experience. “Nothing is repeated, every- thing’s new,” said Edgley. He added that the Great Moscow Circus Big Top had been updated with new air- conditioning and over R3- million in new lights and a sound system. Audiences will witness tightrope walker Laszlo Simet perform a high-wire skywalk 25m above the ground with no safety net or wires. Ticket prices range from R110 to R270 (adults) and R65 to R170 (children). Call 083 915 8000. WENDY NZAMA BILLED as the African Art Centre’s “most significant and popular exhibition of the year”, Amagugu VII Treasures runs at the Old Station Building until Saturday, 25 March. The exhibition features a collection of special pieces of beadwork. According to exhibition director Anthea Martin, about 1 000 pieces will be showcased. “We have wooden spoons, milk pails, headrests, imbenge and ceramics,” said Martin. “The beadwork has been collected from a variety of sources. “These include the Ngxamanga, Fengu, Pedi, Xhosa and Pondo groups in the Eastern Cape, as well as the Xhesimbe, Swayimani and many other groups in KwaZulu-Natal. “Items of special interest this year are entire outfits for both men and women from Msinga, Greytown, Maphumulo, The Valley of 1000 Hills and Umkomaas. “These will be sold as complete outfits.” An accompanying catalogue will be available, with photographs compiled by Martin. WENDY NZAMA DESIGNERS and chefs will show off their creative flair at the Decorex KwaZulu-Natal lifestyle event at the International Convention Centre (ICC) from tomorrow until Tuesday, 21 March. The lavish event, themed “Delicious By Design” and in aid of Save the Children KwaZulu-Natal, will feature a stellar cast of local designers from a range of creative fields: from décor, fashion and food to flowers and dinnerware. Designer tables will be the showpieces, displaying the latest fabrics, flatware, fragrant centrepieces, gourmet food, designer accessories and quirky decorative detail like crystal, candles, silver, silks and serviettes. According to director of Decorex SA, Melanie Robinson, the aim of the event is for local designers to make a meaningful contribution to better the lives of children in need. “Feast your eyes on the art of the table, then put in your bid to take this splendour home. The fabulous table creations and designer accessories will be auctioned to raise funds for the under- privileged children who are supported by Save the Children KZN,” said Robinson. Renowned abstract artist Tay Dall’s donation of a painting entitled In the Moment, valued at R19 000, will be auctioned. Setting tables are: Ardmore Ceramic Art with Nauhus Antiques and Linen, Yolande Weiners from D2 Interiors, Sandy Day, Mr Price Home, Institute of Style and Design, and Odette Uys from Eye Candy. SHAYLIN NAIDOO BRINGING back the swing of the 60s and the funk of the 70s is the musical Motown Magic, running at the Heritage Market Theatre in Hillcrest until Sunday, 9 April. Inspired by Detroit, Michi- gan, the car construction city of the world (formerly known as “motortown”), the show uses the music from the Motown era, which had a great influence on many artists and performers. The show boasts a line-up of Durban’s top musicians, and includes Idols stars Clive Gumede and Pume Zondi, e.tv’s Backstage star O’Ryan Winter, and Nothando “serious...” Ngubane. The movie is set in a Johan- nesburg township and tells the story of a young man, hardened by his childhood, who eventually learns the meaning of love and respect. Tsotsi, played by Presley Chweneyagae, heads a group of criminals. After a scuffle with one of his gang members, Tsotsi is forced to confront a past he has tried to keep buried. In a fit of anger, he hijacks the car of a woman in a posh suburb. He later discovers her baby in the backseat and panics, crashing the vehicle. His first response is to run away, but his conscience is stirred and he takes the baby home with him. Through caring for the infant, Tsotsi learns that his actions have repercussions and he finds out what it feels like to care for someone. Tsotsi is a drama but is littered with specks of humour and follows the classic “bad guy turns good”, “love overpowers all” story- line – minus the happy ending. This and superb acting makes it a great movie. Tsotsi is a proudly South African must-see!
