Hello

Welcome to the February issue of SHOUT, the essential guide to local businesses and services for Marlow and Marlow Bottom!

Our fi rst issue received a very positive response - we’re glad you liked it!

Since we last wrote, we have set up our Buy & Sell section on the website: www.shoutdirectories.com - It’s so easy - just fi ll in the online form with a few details and click! Your listing will remain on the website for the duration of the month when we will wipe it and start afresh. IT’S FREE!!! So go online and take a look - buy what you want and sell what you don’t.

Traditionally associated with love, February is the month when we celebrate St.Valentine, and Karly from Diva’s and Dude’s Hair and Beauty is full of ideas for how to pamper your loved one with a relaxing massage and the good news is it won’t cost you a penny! That’s a great thing in these days of economic pressure.

And speaking of economic pressure, in the Spotlight this month is Prism Communications, a local creative agency who prove that small does not mean limited! In today’s technological age, distance is no longer a factor so why pay London prices for your marketing when you can get fantastic results and top quality from your neighbour?

On a completely different plane is the charity work carried out by the Rotary Club and this month’s issue contains an article by David Hughes who explains what Rotary is and does and, in particular, answers the pressing question of why are there two clubs in Marlow?

Continuing with our commitment to support independent business, we are showcasing The Apple Orchard which offers a wide range of high-quality, individual and unusual furniture as well as gifts, jewellery and much, much more! If you are looking for something out of the ordinary for yourself or a friend, or seeking to upgrade your interior design with bespoke pieces that have your personal touch, then The Apple Orchard should be your fi rst port of call. Don’t take our word for it - go and see for yourself!

Health and wellbeing are covered this month with Rachel’s column on detoxing and CBT counsellor Lyn Williams takes on the thorny topic of sleep or rather, the lack of it, and how we can help ourselves. All very good advice on both counts. Take a look. Grandma’s recipe for February is old-fashioned Bread Pudding so why not rustle up a batch, and settle down with a piece while you take in all the good things on offer in this month’s SHOUT?

Have a good month!

Why should we start the year with a detox plan?

The body stores foreign substances and toxins in its fatty deposits, so people often carry up to 10 extra pounds (4.5kg) of unhealthy toxic waste!!

You may also wonder why you:

Are always feeling tired?Have headaches?Have poor memory?Have digestive disorders and so on...?

The simple answer is... YOUR BODY NEEDS A CLEAR OUT! Think of it as a spring clean!

We all know that the key to feeling good and looking great has been called ‘diet’ for far too long. The word diet has been synonymous with weight loss and consequently, we have punished our bodies for their failures with restrictive regimes, leaving our bodies exhausted and our spirits broken. But ‘diet’ actually means your way of life, what clothes or colours suit you and make you feel good, the type of movements your body makes and enjoys, and the

way in which you wind up for a busy day or wind down at the end of it. It is also about the food and drink you put in your body, because what you eat is going to have a huge impact on your body and the way you feel, how energised you are and in the long term, how healthy your body will be.

Why detox?

Detoxing is about restoring the body’s balance. The body’s system and its internal organs do a pretty good, and often unacknowledged, job of processing food, fuelling the body and eliminating waste. But when we put extra strain on our bodies we can upset the balance and things start to go wrong.

Which foods can help me detox?

Fruit, vegetables, salads, whole grain seeds and plenty of water: 6-8 glasses a day! In fact, most foods in their NATURAL state are good.

Which foods should I avoid when cleansing the body?

Sugar, fried food, dairy, alcohol and caffeine.

You can detox the body for a 48 hour period or for up to 2 weeks, depending on how much you have been indulging! And don’t forget: detoxing every six months helps to keeps the body cleansed and toxin-free.

The fruit of the month is ACAI BERRY

What does it offer us in terms of benefi ts?

- Detoxifi es

- Increases energy

- Improves sleep

- Aids digestion

- Helps to keep the heart healthy

- Aids circulation

- Boosts the immune system

and overall, Acai Berry is a really great ally in achieving weight loss and cleansing the body. You can buy Acai Berry Juice in most health shops or the pure Acai berry capsules/tablets can be found in Holland and Barretts

So go for it - you have nothing to lose except all those toxins!

Start a new you in 2011 with a detox!

Happy February to you all...

I hope January was a great start to your new year and you are sticking to the daily skin care routine I spoke about in January’s article. I have enjoyed meeting some SHOUT readers who have come into my salon to see me and indulge in one of my lovely facials. I hope to see you again soon.

This month I am talking about treatments you can do for your loved one. I thought it would be an appropriate thing to talk about considering February is the month of love.

Love is in the air with Valentine’s Day around the corner so if you’re bored with buying the same thing each year - fl owers that look beautiful but cost a lot and only last a week, perfume, jewellery or even an expensive meal out - why not plan a romantic night in with your loved one that won’t cost a penny and will make him or her feel special and will be a night to remember. A relaxing night in could start with a candlelit dinner, always top of the list for many of people. Present your loved one with a homemade cooked dinner, set the mood with some

relaxing music and candles and then make sure you’re ready to give your loved one the pampering he or she deserves. The most relaxing and enjoyable treatment both to have and to give is, of course, a massage, as I am sure many of you would agree. I am going to give you a couple of treatment routines and ideas so you can pamper your loved one.

First I will start off with some basic massage tips to help you make your loved one feel special. To begin with, prepare the bed for your massage; lay out large towels or a blanket that can be washed afterwards as the oils may mark your bedding. Warm your hands by rubbing them together, then apply the massage oil so the oil is warm before you put it on your partner. Spread the massage oil on the upper back then begin rubbing the massage oil across the shoulders. Slowly change between rubbing with your fi ngertips and rubbing with the palms of your hands. Work your way down the back. Lightly squeeze his or her muscles with the pressure of your thumb and then continue down to the buttocks and legs. Move

your hands more slowly and gently when massaging the more sensitive parts of the body. Don’t forget to massage down your partner’s arms to their hands and down their fi ngers. Get your partner to turn over and then continue to massage the feet. Apply deep pressure to each foot: not only will deep pressure help avoid any problems with ticklish feet but it also will work out any tension and knots and help your partner to relax. Make sure you work the entire area. Although the soles of the feet are your primary target, don’t forget to massage each toe and slowly work back up the legs. Maintain constant contact with your partner. Remember once you begin the massage, one of your hands should always remain in contact with your partner’s body. Attempt to keep a smooth, rhythmic pace, working one area of their body at a time. If you need to apply more oil, do so using only one hand while your other hand continues the massage. Breaking physical contact is a distraction from the overall experience.

The amount of time you spend is strictly up to you, but you should carry out this

treatment for a minimum of 45 minutes before switching roles - that’s if he or she isn’t too relaxed by this point! Or if you want to add a bit more into their massage, why not add a relaxing sensual head massage. This is a wonderful way to melt away pain and tension and revive the scalp. Give the perfect head massage by using some basic techniques and you will be surprised at how soothing and effective your fi ngers can be. Make sure your partner is lying on their back and their head is at edge of your bed so you are able to comfortably start their head massage. Massage the scalp by making small circular motions with your fi ngertips. Cover the entire scalp area and pay special attention to the temples. Be careful not to press down too hard as this can actually cause pain and lead to throbbing. Run your fi ngers gently through the length of your partner’s hair, smoothing it away from the face and down the back. This not only relaxes but also sets up for a facial by priming the area and moving hair out of the way. If you feel like pampering him or her even more you can add the mini facial routine I gave you in last month’s article. Now take small strands of hair between your fi ngers and tug gently, this action increases the circulation and helps relieve headaches and sinus pressure that occur when pressure in the area builds up. Move your hands down to the forehead and press gently from side to side with your fi ngertips until you have reached the eyebrows. Use massage oil

around the scalp and temples for easier movement. After all this, your partner should feel like a new person! Now it’s the best part – it’s your turn to be pampered…

Aromatherapy can be an alternative therapy for natural healing. It can be used to relax and soothe the mind and body, to energize or even to set a loving mood. By selecting a particular scent, you can encourage a state of relaxation, romance, healing or comfort. Aromatherapy stimulates your mind and emotions so I am going to list a few romantic and sensual oils you might want to use: Jasmine, Gardenia, Rose, Geranium, Ylang Ylang and Sandalwood are all associated with romance and love, so these would be perfect to use for your romantic evening. Other oils known to set the romantic mood are Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Clove, Patchouli, Pine and Vetiver.

If you don’t have a lady or man to pamper on Valentine’s Day, it doesn’t mean you can’t use some of these tips and ideas on your girlfriends or family members or why not take advantage of the offer

I have for all you SHOUT readers below and treat yourself.

In case you missed out on reading my January article, I cover all beauty treatments from Jessica Manicures and Pedicures, Waxing, ST TROPEZ Spray Tanning, to relaxing Facials, please feel free to see the full range of the hair and beauty treatments we can offer you on our website:www.divaanddudes.co.uk

Did you know?

Falls are a major cause of disability and a leading cause of mortality due to injury in older people aged over 75 in the UK.

Most falls do not result in serious injury, but the consequences for an individual of falling or of not being able to get up after a fall can include fear of falling, loss of confi dence, loss of mobility, depression, social isolation, and pressure-related injury. Enhancing physical activity, healthy eating (including adequate intake of calcium) making your property safer, ensuring that your pavements are kept clear & in good repair, avoiding loose carpets or rugs and slippery fl oors, badly-fi tting footwear or clothing and ensuring that you have good lighting and grab rails can all help to prevent falls.

Did you know?

Under-detection of mental illness in older people is widespread, because of the nature of the symptoms and the fact that many older people live alone. Glenore Home Care Services Ltd can offer companionship to ensure you are still able to access creative and social pursuits.

Did you know?

Dementia is characterised by: memory loss, disorientation, language impairment, change in personality and self-neglect. Glenore Home Care Services Ltd has carers who are trained to help and support individuals who wish to stay in their own home for as long as possible after being diagnosed with dementia. By working together we can offer peace of mind knowing that your loved ones are receiving the best support possible.

Glenore Home Care Services are also offering free awareness sessions to any voluntary and community groups who wish to learn more about healthy eating, diabetes, dementia, physical activity, well-being and much more!

The Rotary Club

The funny thing about Rotarians is that you know they’re out there somewhere but it’s hard to catch sight of them. And not everybody would know what to make of them even if they saw one.

Well, in Marlow it’s different. They are about but there are so many they need two separate clubs. So what is Rotary and what do Rotarians do?

Rotary has been around for a long time. In 1905, Chicago lawyer Paul P Harris was talking with three friends and he had the idea of a club that would encourage fellowship amongst members of the business community. He was also looking to fi nd the kind of friendly spirit he had known in the villages where he had grown up. That was the fi rst Rotary Club meeting.

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland was formed in 1914 and now has over 55,000 members in 1,855 clubs. Today Rotary International is one of the world’s largest service organisations, with some

29,500 clubs in more than 160 countries.

So, back to Marlow. Marlow Rotary club was formed in 1948. Since then they have regularly maintained a membership of between forty and forty-fi ve and meet every Thursday for lunch and to discuss the business of the club. Around ten years ago, some Marlow members decided that lunchtime was great fun but not easy to combine with an active career. They agreed they should start their own Rotary club under the watchful eye of what has come to be known as the ‘Mother Club’ i.e. Marlow. They called the new club Marlow Thames and they meet most Wednesday evenings at the King’s Head, Little Marlow. There are approximately thirty members. Half are women.

Although you may not know much about Rotary you are almost certainly familiar with some of their activities. Think Santa Fun Run, jointly organised by Marlow and Marlow Thames Rotary. Or Cookham Regatta where

the Cookham and Marlow Thames clubs come together. They are both enormously successful local events organised entirely by Rotarians and they raise vast sums of money for their selected charities.

Rotarians are enthusiastic and active volunteers, men and women from business and professions who share a common interest in helping others.

As well as raising money for good causes they like to raise a giggle and their weekly meetings have been known to dissolve into hysterical laughter, albeit probably at another member’s or visitor’s expense. The point is they are generally not just serious, single-minded worthies; yes they want to help others but they defi nitely want to enjoy themselves at the same time.

Club meetings are an opportunity for a good meal, the pleasure of fellowship and to think of ideas of benefi t to the club, its objectives and its members. High profi le and thought-provoking guest

speakers are regularly invited to share their experiences. Recently, Alan Spong, 90, the last surviving boat captain from the evacuation of soldiers from Dunkirk, recounted the story of the ‘Little Ships’ and his part in that terrible experience in 1940. Very few eyes in the house were dry when he’d fi nished. And not just because his story was so harrowing but also because he had a great sense of humour. Other speakers have fascinated members with tales of adventures in Africa, Gurkhas’ hardships in their homeland, the work of a bomb disposal expert, experiences of a Concorde pilot and the joy of handbells. All of them interesting, informative and often funny.

Rotarians spend quite a bit of time out and about. Between them, Marlow and Marlow Thames visited the Olympic Park in East London, Stanlake Vineyard to taste the Wine (hard one that), Cliveden Open Air Theatre

and a banquet in a Chinese restaurant. Oh, and very few members turned their noses up for a visit to the local sewage works.

They have organised jazz concerts, boat trips and been involved in Rotary Youth Speaks, Rotary Young Chef and RYLA, an outwardbound-style course to promote future leadership qualities. Exchange visits to overseas clubs are a regular feature where members enjoy local hospitality and stay in their hosts’ homes. Of course, the favour is returned so if you bump into a group of foreigners strolling down the High Street sporting Rotary badges, they are probably staying with local Rotarians.

Of course, the primary objective is to help others and raise money for many charities in the UK and overseas. This has included, in 2010, local youth charities such as Helen and Douglas House and, overseas, the Kamuli Mission Hospital in Uganda.

If asked the question “what do you think is one of the greatest achievements of Rotary?” the answer would probably be the campaign to wipe out polio worldwide. Since 1985, when Rotary became involved in polio eradication, the number of reported polio cases has fallen from 350,000 a year to 1,000 and millions of children have been saved, thanks to the determination of Rotarians across the globe.

Rotary round the world has various mottos including “Service above Self”, and “They profi t most who serve best”.

In Marlow and Marlow Thames we agree with those sentiments but prefer our version which sounds a little bit closer to our experience: Rotary - Having fun helping others.

Bread pudding is delicious and is eaten like a piece of cake - a treat with a cup of tea or coffee. Bread pudding is an old English dish - historians say it dates back to the 11th Century but more recently, it was very popular in the early to mid 1900s. People were loath to throw away stale bread as food waste was unheard of during that time, and so a fl avourful pudding (actually more like a cake) was born!

Children love making it - it’s very quick and easy and best of all, it is all mixed by hand!

Ingredients

● 8 oz bread (wholemeal or white or a mixture of both)

● 6 oz dried fruit ● 3 oz sugar (white or brown)● 1 egg● 1 level teaspoon mixed spice● Cold water to soak bread● Small knob of butter or margarine● Icing sugar or caster sugar for dusting

Method

Soak the bread in cold water (not too much but enough to make the bread really soggy) in a bowl for 1 hour. Squeeze out any excess water.

Add the dry ingredients and the egg and mix by hand until all combined.

Put mixture in a greased cake tin (approx 7 or 8 inch diameter – the mixture should be about 1.5 inches deep) and dot tiny pieces of butter or margarine on top and bake for about 40 minutes in a moderate oven, (180 C/ Gas mark 4) until fi rm to the touch and golden-brown.

When cool dust with icing sugar or sprinkle with castor sugar before serving.

Yummy!

Prism Communications a local marketing agency, were appointed on a consultancy basis to assist us in a variety of objectives. One of the key tasks was to implement a new website where we could clearly show how we have differentiated ourselves from other local nurseries in the area.

Since the launch of the new site, we have noticed an increase in interest in the nursery which has led to new business. Prism were fundamental in achieving our objectives, they took the time to understand our business. Their creative skills are brilliant and really looked at what we wanted and doing things differently, think outside the box, fun to work with and we would highly recommend Prism and the team to any business looking for a great marketing agency.

We are Amber and Matthew and we are twins, we were born in May 2008 at John Radcliffe with some persuading!

We may be twins but we are very different. Amber my younger sister by two very important minutes, is very girly and loves pink fairies, dolls and puzzles but I love blue, anything with wheels, balls or doing stuff that is physical.

We both started at Red Fox in March 2009 at 10 months old after a fantastic trip to Australia. We went straight into Wrens with Dani. She was great with mum who was not good at leaving us. It didn’t take long for her to realise our love

of water. The fi rst time Dani decided to try water play we jumped in and got soaked! We still get ourselves wet every chance we can.

When we were walking we moved to Robins and Dani, who just couldn’t be without us moved up too! We had a wonderful time and loads of cuddles from Sylvia and Chris.

We are now in Owls and are showing everyone our love of puzzles and construction. We have good appetites and more often than not have 2 - 3 servings much to Geoff’s dismay! We like to keep him on his toes!

If you’re looking for a new travel companion, this month we are giving you some information about the latest arrivals in the Apple family. With the new MacBook Air, Apple promises to deliver a portable computer that is lighter than the average net-book, comparable in size but with much more power, at a price which starts at £867. Some features pushed forward by Apple include: Flash storage,Multi-Touch trackpad, Long battery life (5-7hrs) and a LED-backlit display (11.6” and 13” models) with high pixel density. Apple also says that the computer can stay in sleep mode for up to 30 days.

Build quality: The build quality of the new MacBook Air is excellent. It’s made of aluminum and does not shear or bend.

Ports: There are two USB ports, one DisplayPort, the power plug, and the standard 3.5mm jack audio out. The 13” model sports an additional SD card slot.

Weight: At 2 lbs/1kg (11.6” model), this design puts to shame most competing computers that weigh an average of 3.3 lbs/1.49kg (Lenovo X100e, Lenovo U150, Toshiba T215D…). That’s a signifi cant weight advantage, and it feels very much like having an iPad (1.5 lbs) in the bag. Low weight

is defi nitely one of the big advantages of the MacBook Air.

Keyboard: The MacBook Air keyboard uses the same design than the MacBook Pro Series. The Function keys and the arrow keys are a bit smaller, but other than that it feels pretty much the same. The quality of the keyboard is great. Note that there’s no backlighting option for the keyboard.

Display: With a resolution of 1366×768 (11.6) and 1440×900 (13.3), the MacBook Air displays are actually better than the MacBook Pro line-up. That might tell us how Apple will update the MacBook Pro next. Both resolutions provide a good pixel density. The Apple’s display is nice, has a good view angle and an image quality that surpasses most competing computers.

Trackpad: It’s pretty sad to see that in the computer world, most companies can’t even match the trackpad of a MacBook Air. This is the same glass trackpad (about the size of an iPhone) that you can fi nd on the MacBook Pro Series.

Audio: The MacBook Air speakers are surprisingly good, given that they seem to be placed in some natural, or rather, invisible place. It’s about as

good as or possibly better than on the MacBook Pro 13. You can defi nitely enjoy a movie in a relatively quiet place.

Charger: The MacBook Air comes with the same 45W charger that powers the MacBook Pro 13; there’s nothing new here.

CPU Performance: The MacBook Air comes with different Intel Core Duo processors options (from 1.4GHz to 2.13GHz) optimized for low power consumption and low thermal dissipation. Remember the processor alone doesn’t tell the whole story. The hard drive and the graphics processor can alter the performance very signifi cantly.

Memory: The MacBook Air has memory (RAM) that is integrated to the motherboard so it is critical to choose how much memory you want at order time. Although you can run many applications just fi ne with 2GB, 4GB of RAM are recommended because a lot of people tend to leave apps and browser tabs open at all times, and to be honest, all those “simple” apps are ‘memory hogs’. Skype can eat as much as 256MB of RAM and Chrome about 300MB with 5 tabs. It’s just too easy to hit the point where things start to swap to disk. 4GB RAM is a £80 upgrade.

Best features

Size versus speed versus price: The MacBook Air has been called a “Netbook” by some, a laptop by others. It doesn’t matter what you call it. It’s a small computer that comes with the traditional trade-offs. Most manufacturers have chosen to go for low price, low speed and remotely comparable size. That market has been served well, and although no other industrial design can match the MacBook Air’s, Netbooks are not a space that Apple wants to compete into, because it’s about price. Instead, Apple would like to compete in the £900 space where it can trade-off speed for size and weight. The result is a computer that is smaller and lighter than Atom-based netbooks, but yet faster and better built with quality components (display, keyboard, aluminum shell…) and craftsmanship. Of course, you can forget about the low price, but you already knew that.

“Instant On”: You might have read here and there that the MacBook Air has an“Instant-On” feature, which

means that it turns on immediately like a cell phone. In reality the MacBook Air has a fast “wake-up”, thanks to its SSD, so if you close the lid, it will wake up in a few seconds when you open it again. That’s not “instant”, but it’s certainly very good.

Solid State Drive (SSD) by default: Born out of necessity to reach this thinness, the solid-state drive improves the overall system responsiveness by a mile, especially to computers equipped with a 5400rpm (or slower) mechanical drive. Disk accesses are usually the slowest operations on a computer and they can slow things down quite a bit. Although adding an SSD drive improves responsiveness, the downside is the small storage space. The MacBook Air is shipped with confi gurations starting from 64Gb (11”) to 256Gb (13”) SSD drive.

Graphics: The NVIDIA GeForce 320M is the same graphics processor (GPU) that equips the MacBook Pro 13, so we’re in known territory. It’s about twice as fast as the previous MacBook Air graphics processor, and it can

run “real games” at the highest frame rate but not at the highest quality. There are more capable “gaming computers” out there but it’s pretty amazing to see a 2 lbs computer with very good graphics capabilities.

720p video playback: If you are wondering, the MacBook Air can play 720p video from the disk or from the internet without any problems.

Noise Level: Although there is a fan in the MacBook Air, you won’t be able to make it kick off in any signifi cant way. It is absolutely silent.

Conclusion: The MacBook Air product line still isn’t for everyone. But those who value smallness and lightness above all else will fi nd in it quite possibly the most desirable laptop Apple has ever made.

Night night, sleep tight ...Don’t we all just love to snuggle down under a nice thick duvet at bedtime and head straight for the lovely Land of Nod? Into a deep, rich slumber that leaves us feeling totally refreshed the next morning. Well yes of course that’s the ideal for many, but what if you are one of those who can’t get off to sleep or manage to do so, only to wake numerous times in the night, tossing and turning as you try to get back to that oh so precious sleep?

Insomnia is a major public health problem. Billions of pounds are spent each year on prescription medications and over the counter remedies, all in the quest for a decent sleep. As many as one in ten adults and one in fi ve of those over aged 65 years of age suffer from insomnia. G.Ps frequently hear their patients report sleep diffi culties, yet, apart from medication, little seems to be available from public healthcare services to help patients with insomnia.

However, research conducted over the last 25 years has established that cognitive

behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for persistent insomnia. The main diffi culty however, is that although bodies such as the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) may be in agreement with this and issue guidelines suggesting CBT as a suitable treatment for many different kinds of problem, in public health services the demand for CBT very often outstrips the capacity for treatment.

So what can you do to tackle your insomnia? Of course you could follow the advice of well-meaning folk who offer you ‘helpful’ suggestions such as, ‘Have a hot milky drink before bed’, ‘Spray lavender oil on your pillow’ etc., but do these suggestions really work? The issue here is that most people with insomnia get so desperate for good sleep they start to chop and change their routine in order to try to resolve the problem. Then of course it’s diffi cult to tell what works at all!

CBT offers numerous ways of tackling your insomnia: fi rst of all by ‘mapping’ it to understand the problem, then

by using simple strategies to ‘re-train’ your body towards sleep and also helping you to see what part your own thinking might play in the problem. For example, why not start by focussing on what you really know about sleep and then notice how you perceive your own sleep needs. Are you one of those who say, ‘If I don’t get eight hours, I’m useless the next day?’ Because the trick here is to recognise that the way you think about your sleep, what you tell yourself, can actually affect how you feel and end up making the problem worse.

If that idea sounds a little complex, try the short quiz on page 26, to test out what you really know about sleep and see if it makes you think about the part your own ‘sleep beliefs’ can play in exacerbating your sleep problem. So how did you do? If it got you thinking about how you see your sleep problems and whether CBT might offer you new ways of tackling them, then why not follow this up with some CBT sessions to get your sleep back on track?

After our early fall of snow at the end of December last year I wouldn’t be surprised to see another load before spring arrives. We’ve defi nitely had plenty of frosts during January, as well as plenty of rain, so the ground is either frozen or saturated, hardly inviting for the fair-weather gardener.

Seasonal Top Tips:

Continue to keep delicate plants protected as named in January’s issue; there’s plenty more cold weather promised. During mild days winter is a good time to prune apple trees and deciduous shrubs. This can be complicated but there are a few basic principles so I will try to keep it as simple as possible. With apples, in general any dead, dying or diseased branches should be removed. You can tell dead branches in the winter by scraping a

small area of bark: if it is green or white underneath it is alive, if it is brown it’s dead. Then cut out branches that cross over to prevent them from causing damage by rubbing together. Also, prune out some branches from the middle to open up the centre of the tree and reduce very tall branches - after all if you can’t reach the fruit, it will end up on the ground.

With deciduous shrubs it’s a good idea to prune out older, thicker stems to promote growth of younger branches. If done on a yearly basis one third of the older stems can be cut back to the ground, but be careful not to leave large gaps in the shrub. Remember: don’t just cut it all with a hedge cutter if you want fl owers on it this year. If in any doubt about pruning get a professional in to take care of it.

While the grass is dormant it may be worth getting the lawn mower serviced. You can do this yourself but it’s time consuming and fi ddly, and there are good companies in Marlow who will do the job properly in preparation for when it is needed in April.

Favourites:

One of my favourites this time of year is the winter Daphne, in particular Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ as seen here. It is evergreen with a narrow yellow edge to the leaf, is slow growing and reaches about 4ft high. Best of all it has delicate, small, pale pink fl owers mid winter, which have a gorgeous scent. This really needs to be near the front door if you are to get its full benefi t.

Dave’s Mystery Plant:I am a deciduous shrub with

generally straight upright stems and twiggy side shoots. I can reach 10ft high and nearly as wide, and

whilst in leaf I am just a background shrub. After I drop my leaves in Autumn I produce small, dainty

bundles of pale pink to white fl owers all along my stems throughout the

winter, which are very fragrant. Any guesses?
