The simple fact is, if you are someone who regularly breathes the air or occasionally eats food that you yourself have not grown, prepped and cooked…you are at risk. Make no mistake about it, it’s not just “over there” it is here as well.

Transcript of Shots Shots... Hey... You need to read this!

Don’t run away screaming like a little girl…this is for your own good…and the welfare of all humanity. If by chance you have been living under a rock or are in complete denial of how small our world has become taking a look at any headline should be enough to grab your attention.

The simple fact is, if you are someone who regularly breathes the air or occasionally eats food that you yourself have not grown, prepped and cooked…you are at risk. Make no mistake about it, it’s not just “over there” it is here as well.

Yes… even if you never leave your own yard.

First let’s talk about Hepatitis A & B…both food borne illnesses and both preventable. How is your food source contaminated with the virus? If a food handler anywhere along the line has Hepatitis A or B…the chances are pretty good that you will contract the disease too. There is good news though

and this is where being proactive with your health comes into play. There are vaccines available that prevent both Hepatitis A & B, a two dose vaccine given six months apart, and since the virus attacks the liver, a vital organ I might add, the shots just seem like such a small price to pay.

Next…and yes this applies to the Arm Chair Traveler as well…

Remember those inoculations that you received as a kid? Did you know that some of them don’t provide a life time of protection? Let’s talk about Tetanus, for example and the fact that you need a booster every 10 years… or that Mumps and Measles have once again reared their ugly head so boosters for them will keep you fully protected.

For those looking to head out on the Global Open Road there are a whole plethora of vaccines that have been developed to protect you from the likes of Cholera, Typhoid and Yellow Fever, to name but a few.

You can rest assured that there is a trusted and well informed source for the vaccines themselves and other vital travel information pertaining to your health.

The Foreign Travel Nurse at your local health department is a wealth of information… educated with real time information they will tell you more about the diseases out there than you ever thought you might want to know.

The experience is similar to reading the insert that comes along with your prescription drugs in that it is both eye opening and… a little intimidating. Rather than letting the knowledge dissuade you from traveling, your job (should you choose to accept it) is to protect yourself before you go and then use common sense while on the road.

Here’s a tidy little tip for ya… if there is not a word in the local language that translates into “sanitation” you probably shouldn’t eat the fish.

Jus’ sayin…

Disclaimer: While I personally have suffered no discernible side effects from the vaccines I am aware of anecdotal evidence that suggests the Yellow Fever vaccine (in particular) has a hand in accelerating the progression of Parkinson’s disease. To ascertain any risks involved for you personally, be sure to discuss this and any other health concerns with your private physician.
