Starter QuestionHow is making a film like building a house?

The biggest similarities between making a film and building a house is the amount of research and planning that you have to do before you even lay a brick or shoot a scene. Also, there are different kinds of research and planning that you have to do for both and this is what we are going to focus our research on today as this is what AO1 for Unit 1 is asking you to discuss in this section of your report

AO1 – Understand the pre-production requirements for a

short film

Basically this means that in your first section of your report you will need to show that you fully understand the

different processes or steps that you have to undertake in order to fully prepare for

the making of a short film.

Objectives & FocusLearning Objectives Outline the pre-production requirements and

sources of requirements for a short film (PASS) Explain in some detail and competently

present the pre-production requirements and sources of requirements for a short film (MERIT)

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards fully detailed pre-production requirements and sources of requirements for a short film (DISTINCTION)

Literacy Focus Present complex information clearly

Objectives & Focus Look at the words I have underlined

from each criteria – use these to help to explain the different between work which would be a PASS, MERIT & DISTINCTION.

Work with the person next to you to write the objectives again in more student friendly language.

Pre-production Let’s go back to our analogy from the

beginning of the lesson – making a film and building a house

Work with the person next to you to draw two flow maps

One which goes through ALL the steps of building a house

The other which goes through ALL the steps of making a film

Page 8: Short Film Production Report 2

Pre-production Get into a group of four with another pair and look

at your set of flow maps Compare what is similar and what is different? Work as a team, using your two flow maps about

making a film to build a finalised flow map on the A3 paper for the processes of film making

Now take a look at the handout I have given you Use this to draw a matching flow map which

shows the planning or research tasks you might have to undertake at each step of the filmmaking process

Page 9: Short Film Production Report 2

Pre-production We should start to have some sort of

list coming together which shows the pre-production requirements for a short film

Here is mine; Project, finance, time, facilities,

personnel, materials, contributors, locations, clearances and legalities

Do you think there are any you would add based on all your flow maps?

Page 10: Short Film Production Report 2

Pre-production If you look at our lists then you

should realise that this section of your report should itself be split into different parts – you could use sub-headings to help you.

Each sub-heading could cover a step or process in the pre-production of a short film
