    Short Film Analysis: THE PIGMAN

    Plot Overview: A man wakes up at an abandoned campsite inthe middle of the woods with no recollection of who he is, or

    how he got there. Confusion turns to fear as he realizes he isn'talone.

    MIS-EN-SCENE:

    Setting and location:he setting that is shown in the !lm isa t"pical isolated forest setting. #" using an isolated forestsetting the audience will be able to feel the same feeling offear and isolation the main protagonist. he setting is abelievable setting as forests are normall" isolated and there

    are a lot of trees in a forest that is shown in the !lm. $ormalit"is created due to the setting and props which were used in thescene making the audience think that the protagonist in the!lm is in the forest because he is camping, we can tell this dueto a tent being placed behind him, with logs in front of it, whichis normall" used to create a camp !re. he director used a ver"

    stereot"pical forest setting. he picture below demonstrates

    the location and the setting.

    Make!"costme: he main protagonist in the !lm is wearingripped clothes and he look ver" scru%" and disorientated. &rom thecostume "ou can tell he doesnt know what is going on and he lookslike a victim due to his clothing being ripped and having dirt all overhis clothes. he wa" he appears shows us the audience thatsomething is out of the ordinar" and things are not looking normal.

    he antagonist looks e(actl" the same as the protagonist but theonl" di%erence is that the antagonist is wearing a pig mask. &romthe appearance of the antagonist we can see that something isde!nitel" wrong and the protagonist is in trouble. )e also see thatthe antagonist is the same person as the protagonist as his attire ise(actl" the same and when he is unmasked we can see that he isthe same person.

    Color and lighting: the colours used in the !lm are dull coloursand this is done to set a mood" atmosphere. *f bright colours were

    used then it would not !t the tone of the !lm. )e can tell that it isda"time due to the lighting, which was used b" the director whenmaking the !lm. he dull lighting creates a mood of loneliness to thecharacter and helps us feel his isolation.

    Pro!s: he director uses props that will normall" bring the idea offear and isolation. he director uses a hammer, pig mask, card andalso a tent to help create a verisimilitude for the audience, as theidea of the props is to make a believable setting+ location. #ut theother uses of props make us as an audience feel fear for thecharacter and it also makes us feel tense.

    E#ITING:

    An e"e line match is used when the main

    protagonist wakes up. *t shows him getting upand looking at the trees in the distance. his

    is done to highlight his loneliness in the forest. And again an e"e linematch is used to show him look in another direction. *n the sameshot we see the antagonist appearing from behind a tree. A shotreverse shot is used after the protagonist kills the pigman to showthe action in the scene.

    he !lm starts with an e(treme close up, this is used to show thatthe protagonist is unconscious and also that things are out of theordinar". hen a wide shot is used to show that the protagonist is ina empt" forest with no one around, this emphasises his isolation.hen the pigman is introduced using a wide shot where we see the

    pigman appear from behind a tree. his shows us that the pigman isstalking the protagonist and this emphasises the fear in the scene.A close up is then used to show the protagonist is starting to getworried and scared. wo closeups are used during the shot reverseshot to show what the protagonist has done and the face of thedead pigman.
