about THE TOWN HALL

Sitting at the heart of one of the most vibrant and creative areas of London, adjacent to Hoxton Square and just

minutes from Liverpool Street, Shoreditch Town Hall is a magnificent Grade II landmark building.

Once home to local government, the Town Hall has been a fully independent venue since 2001. Comprising of 60 individual rooms and spaces over 46,500 square feet, it includes a stunning purpose built auditorium – the Assembly Hall – the last of what were once six high capacity music halls in Shoreditch. Individual and full of character the building also includes an elegant Council Chamber, three Committee

Rooms, and a warren of untouched, atmospheric basement rooms. In total, eight diverse principal spaces for events from 10 – 800 plus (from 2015).

Under new management since 2012 Shoreditch Town Hall has in recent years established itself as a vital creative space on the London cultural map. With a programme of cutting edge performance and contemporary arts attracting thousands of people to the venue sitting alongside a world class restaurant and an impressive range of established corporate and private hires, the venue is genuinely one of a kind – a uniquely vibrant and individual destination space.

A RICH HISTORY Built in 1865 Shoreditch Town Hall has a colourful history. One of the first Town Halls in the UK to incorporate a purpose built theatre auditorium, in the Victorian era it was at the heart of the East London Music Hall scene, regularly hosting concerts and evenings of entertainment. This included The Saturday Populars – mixed bill entertainment shows that saw thousands pack into the venue every weekend.

In the early 1900s it also played its part in the infamous Jack the Ripper story, hosting the inquest into Mary Kelly, the Ripper’s final victim. This event attracted attention from around the world, with journalists and the public camped out for weeks on the main steps. In more recent years, during the swinging sixties, it become one of London’s foremost boxing venues and east end social hub – a regular hangout of the Kray’s – while the

early 90’s saw it become home to the now infamous Whirl-Y-Gig club nights.

Once one of the grandest Vestry Halls in the City, the Town Hall was built to reflect the ambitions of the pioneering Vestry of Shoreditch & St Leonard’s (later Shoreditch Borough Council). The Council, which ceased to exist when it was absorbed into The London Borough of Hackney in 1965, was fiercely progressive and focused on improving the lives of local people. A legacy of that past can be seen today in the motto ‘More Light, More Power’ cast into windows and crests throughout the building which was both an inspirational call to action, as well as a commemoration of the installation of electric light into the streets of Shoreditch. Continuing in this vein, when the tower was constructed in 1904, the Council installed the prominent statue of ‘Progress’. Lighting the path ahead with her torch, and with an axe to cut through any obstacle, she was modelled on the allegorical figure of ‘Hope’ popular in the Victorian period – the most famous example being the Statue of Liberty – hence the similarity.

Known as The Ditch, the Town Hall’s warren of basement spaces occupying the entire footprint of the building offers a completely different proposition to the grandeur of the upper levels. A real architectural gem The Ditch consists of dozens of interconnecting highly atmospheric rooms, mostly left untouched and distressed, many with original features such as fireplaces and cooking ranges. Benefiting from its own ‘secret’, speakeasy style entrance off Old Street, as well as alternative entrance and exit points, The Ditch has its own facilities and can operate entirely independently of the Town Hall above. Popular for exhibitions, filming, product launches and functions the spaces also now host a regular contemporary theatre and performance programme.

ARTISTIC PROGRAMMEJust over eighteen months ago, we successfully launched Shoreditch Town Hall’s first ever programme of theatre and performance. Innovative projects like Paines Plough’s Roundabout and Gandini Juggling’s CLOWNS & QUEENS in our Assembly Hall have been aligned with the evolution of our basement spaces into The Ditch; a multi-room speakeasy, which has come into its own with regular theatre, cabaret, music and comedy nights.

We want to make the Town Hall a home for original and adventurous artists and audiences, with a unique programme of transformational and unique experiences - with work sometimes complete or often still in development. As a ‘non-traditional’ theatre – i.e. without fixed seats and infrastructure, we want our spaces to be continually reinvented and to become an integral part of the work.

The number and frequency of events in the arts programme varies from month to month, so keep in touch about what’s coming up at Shoreditch Town Hall, by signing up to receive our email newsletters at www.shoreditchtownhall.com or follow us on Twitter: @ShoreditchTH or Facebook: /ShoreditchTH

INFORMATIONENQUIRY PROCESSTo enquire about availability and costs of holding your event at Shoreditch Town Hall, we ask that you complete a simple booking form, which is available on the website, or from a member of our events team. EXCLUSIVITYExclusive hire of the building is available. However, unless otherwise stated, your hire of Shoreditch Town Hall should always be treated as non-exclusive. We do take care to ensure that the level of crossover and impact from multiple hirers is kept to a minimum and will advise of other events happening simultaneously if appropriate

LICENCINGThe Trust holds a licence to present regulated entertainment involving up to a capacity of 499 people.

LOADINGThere is a public loading bay located under the railway bridge on Old Street at the front of the venue. Positioned on a red-route, this bay is limited to loading between 10am-4pm. There is currently no goods lift access into the Town Hall, meaning that all deliveries, collections and equipment must be manually handled into the building. Loading to the Basement may be possible at the rear of the building from Rivington Place. Please ask for details.

ACCESS- We need to make Hirers and audiences aware

that as a Grade II listed building which is still developing as a venue, some areas have very limited or no accessibility for anyone with mobility impairments. We have a lift from pavement level to the ground floor of the

building, allowing for level access to the Council Chamber, Mayor’s Parlour and accessible toilet.

- There is limited access to the Assembly Hall via 32 broad steps, with two landings and continuous bannisters. People with lesser mobility impairments may find them relatively easy to climb. A mechanical stairclimber is available for the Assembly Hall steps, which is only suitable for certain wheelchairs. We need to advise that this is a far from satisfactory means of climbing and that some wheelchair users may not be happy using this equipment.

- The Committee Rooms are accessible via 28 steps with two landings and continuous bannisters.

- We ask anyone visiting or user the building to please check and confirm individual requirements prior to any event. We are happy to help and offer advice.
