Sure, there were plenty of websites, but none that really addressed the destination as a whole; it wasn’t long before marbellainfo.com was born.

They knew the area well. They knew they could build a website covering all the things holidaymakers wanted to know, including details about fl ights, car hire, hotels, what to

The My Destination Story

do, where to go and what to see. They saw their new site as being a combination of Expedia, Trip Advisor and Time Out. To their surprise – and delight – it didn’t take long before over 30 businesses had booked advertising. The seed of My Destination was sown and the pair never returned to complete their studies.

They set their sights next on the Algarve, in Portugal. Staying with friends, sleeping on sofas and fl oors while creating the site, they soon realised that managing two sites in diff erent parts of Europe was too much. They licensed the idea to a friend who lived there and shifted focus to their next move – the basis for My Destination’s success, the franchise model.

As we go to print with this story, My Destination franchises cover 109 destinations in 60 countries – but by the time you read this, the number is sure to have increased! Through the collection of license fees, management fees and ‘commission’ on ad sales, the franchise model has facilitated rapid growth without the need to bring in outside investment or loans. At the same time, the model means franchisees go straight to fi rst base with a fully functioning, sophisticated website backed by global branding, top-fl ight SEO services, marketing, PR and more – all through tapping the centralised pool of freely-available My Destination expertise.

Feature The My Destination Story

To fuel the most recent growth, which included a move to new London premises and bringing in-house most of the creative and technical functions – and to pave the way for implementation of the long-term strategic plan – Neil and James have off ered all franchisees the opportunity to buy shares in the company; off erings have been signifi cantly over-subscribed, indicating the faith at grass roots level in where My Destination is going.

And it’s at grass roots level where My Destination has the edge over every single one of its competitors. Each franchisee is passionate about his or her own destination. They live there, probably have done for some time, and know it well. They don’t have to worry about SEO, design, innovation, administration and so on. Instead they’re free to focus on the sharp end – gathering the information and other content, including multimedia, that brings their own destination website alive and fi nding the advertisers that make it fi nancially viable.

The franchise model keeps centralised operating costs low, which means the cost of advertising on the sites can be low. Profi t margins are slim, but with 109 sites (and growing) around the world, those margins add up. Advertisers have a wide variety of choices about how to be part of a My Destination website – the entry level ‘Silver Profi le’ off ering incredible value for those serious about promoting their business to a global audience.

Never known to stand still, Neil and James are ready to take the business to the next level. A hotel booking engine, incorporated into the sites just a couple of months ago, is fully functioning and off ers visitors instant comparisons between rates of most leading providers.

Already mobile apps have been built that allow visitors in the area to see what deals and off ers are nearby, creating added revenue possibilities for advertisers. And with ‘relevancy’ and ‘interactivity’ the buzzwords in the online space right now, My Destination is investing in the latest technology and the best in human resources to ensure it takes (and maintains) its place at the forefront of the digital travel scene.

In 2006, Neil and James built a crude, but successful, website one summer between university semesters. Five years later, all 109 websites under the My Destination banner are anything but crude and attract millions of visitors. Uniquely in the online travel world, My Destination has created a global presence yet retained a distinctively local feel.

Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC) recently celebrated 19 years as a functioning yacht club in grand style. With succulent catering from Phuket’s Irish Times Pub, music from the ever-popular Roaring Bhoys and island favourite 91.5FM’s DJ Doris, more than 100 members and guests ate, drank and danced the night away at the club’s unbeatable waterside venue.

Ao Chalong Yacht Club19 years young

“This was the club’s fi rst real attempt in 19 years to throw a ‘major league’ party of its own,” said ACYC Commodore Grenville Fordham, noting that the month before the club had hosted more than 200 guests on behalf of the Sabang Regatta organisers. “The diff erence this time was that the club was footing the bill – or at least making up the diff erence between the heavily subsidised ticket price and the cost of staging the event,” he added.

But why throw a party for year 19? “We decided to hold a 20th Birthday Party next year, but thought it would be a good idea to get in a bit of practice fi rst,” said Fordham.

ACYC is Phuket’s only ‘big boat’ yacht club, with its own spacious beachside bar & restaurant, club racing twice each month, RYA accredited theory courses, occasional weekend raft-ups away and an active social scene. “You don’t have to be a boat owner – or even an avid sailor – to enjoy dropping by the club in an evening and setting the world to rights over an ice cold beer or two,” said Fordham.

The Kee Resort & Spa, is Patong’s newest resort located in an excellent prime location and is just a one minute walk to Patong beach. The Kee Resort & Spa was named after the owner of the land “Ama Siu Gee” formally known as Mrs Jumroonsri Somnam, adapted from “Gee” to “Kee” for easier pronunciation. The fi ngerprint logo of the Kee Resort & Spa is the right thumbprint of the late Ama Siu Gee, the same as her ‘signature’ on the land ownership documents for the 11 rai (17,600 sqm) on which resort is built. Khun Surasak Somnam, Managing Director of Srisomnam Co., Ltd., commissioned Helicam Co Ltd to obtain new marketing material which would included aerial and ground imagery and video for their resort promotional video, ground HDR photography and interactive 360 degree virtual tours all shot in high defi nition. Using the remote piloted helicopter equipped with HDV video and 18 mega pixel stills, Helicam Co Ltd are able to obtain material for a dynamic promotional video and beautiful imagery of the resort. The promotional movie is edited at the Helicam offi ce using licensed sound track. The end result provides a tantalizing taste attracting even more customers to experience The Kee Resort & Spa.

FacilitiesPalm House School provides purpose designed and built facilities in extensive tropical grounds that consist of: air conditioned classrooms with wireless internet and interactive whiteboards, reference library, outdoor hardcourt, grass playing fi eld, large landscaped outdoor play area.

International Primary CurriculumThe IPC focuses children’s learning on a combination of knowledge, skills and understanding. No one can properly predict the nature of work and life opportunities that will be available for today’s primary age children by the time they are adults. Many of the jobs they will have don’t yet exist; especially in the fi elds of ICT, technology and science. So the IPC focuses on a skills-based approach, developing adaptable and resilient globally-minded learners, prepared for the fast-changing world that they’ll be living and working in.

'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it.

Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff , with teak fl oors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket.

Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence nine years in succession.

Looking for a break from the tourist spots on Phuket’s west coast – and the best pizza on the island? Follow the locals to Salvatore’s, a rustic 'trattoria' in Phuket Town. Salvatore off ers traditional Italian cuisine using only the fi nest fresh ingredients, such as linguini alla bottarga, sea bass in salt crust, gnocchi with fresh sausage and pizza baked in a wood-burning oven.

Other specialties are created with local shellfi sh, like mouth-watering lobster ravioli and fettucini with crab. Start with the bruschetta, with delicately skinned tomatoes and fresh herbs and beef carpaccio with olive oil.

The food is prepared under the careful eye of the Sardinian executive chef and owner, Salvatore Cossu, a fi xture on Phuket’s restaurant scene for his cooking skills. He personally shops for the vegetables and fi sh in local markets. The bread is baked daily; the pastas and sausages are home-made.

Ask him about daily food specials as well as wine suggestions. Salvatore off ers about 60 labels, including Sardinian wines.

The service is warm and the ambience is friendly. But the real star is the food.

The Siam Supper Club International

The Siam Supper Club is defi nitely an icon!! It screams the word. There are few places in the world that provoke such a sense of time and place.

The venue is a long bar and grill that has become synonymous with the cool of a bygone age still leaving it's sophisticated imprint. It's cool... in the same way scotch on the rocks is cool. Beautiful... no glorious jazz fi lling the few empty spaces. One of the most interesting collections of sepia black and whites remain true to this same time and place.

When one is at The Siam Supper Club, one has to give up the mantle of tourist or visitor and for a brief time assume the rank of resident or... Phuketian. For when you're at The Siam Supper Club you are well and truly placed in a subtley lit and timbered comfort zone where a cocktail is still a cocktail damn it, the wines are big and the fabulous food reminds you of how things used to be. Ah! The tropics!

Big wines. Fabulous food. Great music.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

Where are you from? Adelaide, Australia.

When did you move to Phuket? I came to Phuket in 1999, after living in Chonburi since 1991. I was only 24 when I fi rst moved to Thailand.

What made you decide to come and live here? There was a recession in Australia in the early 1990s, so my father, a shipwright by trade, opened an offi ce and manufacturing plant in Chonburi, making commercial and military ships for the Thai navy and oil rig supply vessels for export. I worked with him initially, then I worked for three years as an instructor of computer-aided design at a technical college in the port city of Laem Chabang.

I moved to Phuket when I had an opportunity to set up a new branch here for the large security services company Securicor (now G4S). After training in Bangkok I drove down to Phuket, carrying the company furniture on my truck, and opened the offi ce. After some seven years I moved to PCS, a property and facilities management company, before moving to ISS Facility Services last year, where I also set up a new branch in Phuket.

Tell us something about your business. ISS is a global company and in Thailand alone it has 23,000 staff . I opened the Phuket offi ce in June of last year and we now have 350 staff . We provide security for 18 airlines at Phuket International Airport and provide cleaning, pest control and security services for a number of resorts and properties all over the south, including the Marriott and Le Meridien. We're working to expand our network in the south and an offi ce in Samui is opening soon.

How does doing business in Phuket compare to back home? The major diff erence is that here the answer to many things is to add more people. This will soon change, however, if the minimum wage increases promised by the new government go into eff ect. ISS is facing a 40% increase in costs starting next year. We've been proactive in issuing letters to customers to start to look at ways to reduce manpower to keep costs down.

Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? What determined your choice of location? I live in Parlai. I like this area because it's close to my lifestyle, Chalong pier for sailing and the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, and it's also close to my offi ce on the bypass road in Phuket City.

Do you own a house or do you rent? I have been renting a house but just recently we put a down payment on a new three-bedroom house, also in Parlai. With our expanding family we needed a bigger place.

What kind of car do you drive? Why? I drive a 10-year-old Nissan pick-up truck, perfect for pulling my boat trailer. My wife drives a Honda Civic, which we use for family outings.

What do you like most about living in Phuket? I love the weather, and Thai was my favourite food back in Australia and remains so today. I also love Thai people. If you're an expat manager you have to like Thai people or you're not going to do well. I think coming to Thailand at a young age gives you a better chance of success at living here and managing a business. When you're young you're more open to diff erent ways of doing things. It's harder to adjust when you're older.

What's the most frustrating thing about living here? I've been here so long I don't fi nd anything frustrating! But if I had to say one thing, I do fi nd the attitudes of some drivers here annoying, especially now that I have children. They have no respect for other people's lives, let alone the rules of the road.

Tell us more about your family. My wife, Cattaleeya, or 'Cat', is from Bangkok and we have two sons aged four and seven months. I met my wife when we both worked at Securicor.

What do you think the future holds for you? Fame and wealth, hopefully! More realistically, I just want to stay healthy enough to keep working, keep

the kids in school, and keep sailing. The thing about sailing is that it's a sport you can do until you drop dead, and that's what I plan to do.

How do you evaluate success? For me, success is earning the respect of people around you whether it's in business or social life. Certainly not money – I'm happy just having enough to be comfortable.

You're active in Thailand's competitive sailing scene. What have you been up to lately? The last regatta I did was the Platu Cup in Pattaya in October. There are four of these events a year. I raced in July's Phuket Raceweek – I've done them all since the beginning. This is my favourite race because the conditions that time of year make for more exciting sailing, and it's also a professionally run regatta. We won this year's Phang Nga Bay Regatta on my Phuket 8 sports boat, Somtam Express.

What else do you do with your free time, if you have any? Nearly all my free time is spent with my family and sailing or sailing related activities. I'm a race offi cer for the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, organising its fortnightly races. Together with a friend, I recently bought a one-man Laser boat, which is small enough to handle by yourself or with the kids. It's the perfect boat for a father and son.

It is advisable for foreign investors in or with assets in the Kingdom of Thailand to plan in advance for death and the treatment of assets in Thailand. According to the Thai Civil and Commercial Code generally the ownership of estate devolves on heirs when a person dies. In Thailand succession may either be intestate (no will was written) or testamentary (a valid will was written). When there is a valid will made by the deceased, which satisfi es the validity requirements of Thai law, testamentary succession will take place. Even if there should be a will drafted in another jurisdiction to cover assets in Thailand testamentary succession may be diffi cult, in practice, as the foreign documentation will need to be translated into Thai language, notarized and approved by authorities in Thailand with further support perhaps necessary through Court approval of the nature of the will made.

Statutory Right of Inheritance without valid Will (“Intestate”)If there is no valid will in Thailand, the assets of the deceased person will be distributed among his or her statutory heirs in accordance with the classes of relations as stipulated in the Thai Civil and Commercial Code Articles 1620 and 1629 which are, in order of priority:

(1) descendants;(2) parents;(3) brothers and sisters of full blood;(4) brothers and sisters of half blood;(5) grandfathers and grandmothers;(6) uncles and aunts.

If there should be a surviving spouse of the deceased person and no heir as specifi ed above, the whole inheritance will devolve to the surviving spouse. If there are heirs as mentioned above and a surviving spouse, the surviving spouse is entitled to the inheritance of the deceased in the class and according to the division as stipulated in Thai law.

Last Will in ThailandIn the circumstance of “testamentary succession” (a valid will) the testator (the person making the will) decides in his or her will who shall inherit the estate and the corresponding share. The will should detail all assets of the testator in Thailand, such as property, bank accounts and vehicles. Thai law recognizes several forms of wills. In the following we mention the most common forms of will used in Thailand:

One form is that the testator drafts its will in writing, dated at the • time of the making of the will and signed by the testator before at least two witnesses. The witnesses are also obliged to sign the will to certify the signature of the testator.

Another form accepted according to Thai Civil and Commercial Code • Article 1657 is the so-called “holograph will” wherein the testator in his own hand writes the entire will. In addition, the testator has to affi x his signature and the date it was drafted to the will.

The testamentary succession in Thailand will further take place • with a will made in a public document as stated in Thai Civil and Commercial Code Article 1658. Therefore the testator must declare to the “Kromakarn Amphoe” and at least two witnesses what dispositions the testator wishes to include in its will. The “Kromakarn Amphoe” must note the declaration of the testator and thereafter read this note before the testator and the witnesses. After that the testator and the witnesses must sign the note. The “Kromakarn Amphoe” shall then affi x his signature and seal to the note.

Another form of a valid will in Thailand is the “secret document” • mentioned in Article 1660 of the Thai Civil and Commercial Code. The testator writes the dispositions in a document and dates and signes the document. After closing the document, the testator shall submit it before the “Kromakarn Amphoe” and at least two witnesses and affi rm to them that the said document is the will. After that, the “Kromakarn Amphoe” must affi x his seal and signature and transcribe a statement into the closed document to the eff ect that the testator has declared that the said document is the testator’s will. Furthermore the witnesses must sign the document.

CONCLUSION

It is important to plan for death and in order to do so understand the basic rules of succession in Thailand. Even if foreign wills are generally accepted in Thailand and testamentary succession for the assets of the deceased person in Thailand could take place it is advisable to have a separate will in Thailand to simplify the situation for the family of the deceased. Often in practice, there is a belief that everything will be ‘ok’ if a foreign will exists, but in reality the lives of those left behind can be made diffi cult for months or even years, sorting out the aff airs of the deceased.

Peak Season – a time to sell?Think again!

David Wade is a Director of Tropical Homes Real Estate with offi ces in Kata Beach and LagunaTel: +66 (0)81 787 1108,+66 (0)81 808 8896 Email: [email protected]

Traditionally high season is a time for tourists and, though there's a possibility a small percentage will decide to buy property while they're here, the simple truth is the serious buyer is already looking now in readiness for the high season. This is why the months leading up to high season are the best time to make a sale; sellers should be aware of this.

I've come across many a seller who, having been encouraged by higher levels of interest during these few months has decided to stick out for his asking price on the presumption that he'll receive far more enquiries and a better price once the peak season begins in earnest. Peak season arrives and, instead of receiving more enquiries he's then surprised to fi nd he's getting fewer. I made this incorrect assumption when we fi rst opened for business in September 2005 − and I'm a seasoned real estate agent with over 30 years experience in the business.

Admittedly the boom was then in full swing, so sales were fl ourishing all year round − but even then peak season (around Christmas and New Year) was a quiet time because the people arriving then are mostly tourists looking to have a good time; nothing could be further from their minds than spending a day or two driving around looking at properties.

If you buy now you can have full use of the property during high season, be it for your own use and/or to rent out. If you decide

to buy in peak or high season (between January and March) the chances are that, by the time the sale has been concluded (it takes around one month minimum), the high season is over and it might be another few months before you get to use it again.

We've noticed, however that things are changing. At one time, when the north western European buyer was predominant, they would have bought to use primarily during November to April but, with the 'Summer' season (June to September) becoming increasingly attractive, and with the increase in numbers of buyers arriving from Australia, during their winter, and the Middle East, during their intensely hot summers, we're noticing more clients buying property to use during what was Phuket’s low season and to rent out during high season − because they live in climates which enjoy their best weather during this time.

This is good news for sellers as they're no longer reliant on buyers from Europe, though the latter will most certainly be welcomed with open arms when they do eventually return in numbers. What the emergence of these new buyers has done is to create interest in what used to be the quietest time of the year, immediately after high season, as they want to buy in readiness for Phuket’s summer season.

For now we should be grateful that we have a property market that's attractive to the global market all year round, unlike southern Europe or Latin America, which rely almost entirely on buyers from their region, snowbirds from Northern Europe or the USA respectively. As for peak season, do as the tourists do: enjoy it.

There are many companies which off er island tours and these are a convenient and inexpensive way of seeing more of your holiday destination. However, if you have the time, why not rent a motorcycle or car and do a little exploring on your own? Your hotel or tour guide will be able to give you a road map, but you can’t really get lost. This is an island, so if you keep going you’ll eventually get back where

This event is one of the most beautiful and popular festivals in Thailand. It’s traditionally celebrated on the full moon night of the 12th month in the lunar calendar, which usually falls in November. This year it’s is on the evening of the 10th November.

During the festival, Thai people will construct a small fl oat from a section of banana tree trunk, decorate it with banana leaves and fl owers, and add a candle and three sticks of incense. It is also common practise to include some nail clippings or a few strands of one’s hair, and a small sum of money. The candle and joss-sticks are lit and the krathong is fl oated away on any open stretch of water. As we’re living on an island, this obviously is likely to be the sea. The belief is that this off ering to the gods will take away all the bad luck of the past year and thus bring good fortune in the year to come. If you don’t have a banana tree conveniently to hand, then many small shops will have ready-made off erings on sale for a few baht.

you started! Follow the winding coast roads and discover isolated beaches which you can have all to yourself. Head inland and visit small farming communities where people still live in much the same way as they have for hundreds of years.

Please remember that you must wear a crash helmet when riding a motorcycle. For those of you who are visiting from Europe or the United States, please also note that we drive on the left here!

Motorcycle rentals start at 150 baht per day and small jeeps are available from 1000 baht per day. If you rent for a week or longer, you may be able to negotiate a better rate.

Things to Do in PhuketUseful info

Phuket has plenty of choices when it comes to places to see and things to do. This month we’d like to off er you a guide to some activities which will give you an insight into Phuket’s cultural side, away from the usual tourist attractions. We hope that this may enhance your holiday experience and perhaps persuade you to return in the future.

Explore the island

As the sun sets and the moon rises above the horizon the crowds start to gather on all the accessible beaches; food stalls appear from nowhere and a carnival

atmosphere prevails. If you are planning to get there by car it’s a good idea to arrive

early, as parking can be a problem alongside the popular beaches. On the bigger beaches there

may also be organised events like beauty contests, fair games, fi rework displays and handicraft markets.

Many people will also make paper lanterns (called khom loy in Thai) which climb into to the sky powered by the heated air from a candle wired inside. This illuminates the canopy at the same time. The sight of hundreds of these tiny fl ickering points of light climbing into the night sky makes for a delightfully romantic backdrop to the party. If you’re planning to do this, don’t forget to make a wish at the launch – this is the land where wishes come true.

Enough history. Loy Krathong is a lighthearted celebration of the end of the monsoon rains and a great excuse for a party. Enjoy.

Phuket International Hospital’sHealth BookletsWhat is the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke? What should you do if you are bitten by a snake? What should you look for before you sit down to order at a local restaurant?

The answers to those questions, as well as a host of other practical information, can be found in a free community service publication by Phuket International Hospital. The 36-page booklet Your Health in Phuket will be available in English, Scandinavian (Swedish/Danish) and Russian languages, and is aimed at providing Phuket residents and tourists with up-to-date and relevant information on staying healthy while visiting or living on our lovely island.

The opening paragraph reads like this: As soon as you step off the airplane, you can’t help but notice Phuket’s climate. The air feels hot and sticky. The sun’s rays blast like a furnace, and you begin to sweat. Welcome to the tropics! Adjusting to this warm and humid weather – not to mention Phuket’s exotic fl ora and fauna – will be crucial in ensuring that your stay here is both comfortable and safe.

No matter where in the world you come from, Phuket is not exactly like your home environment, so taking a few extra precautions, being aware

of the possible eff ects of the tropical climate and knowing about the local health care system will go a long way in maintaining your health. The Phuket International Hospital publications contain practical information about beating the heat and the sun, the beach fl ag warning system, creepy crawlies, eating healthily, getting around the island and about marine sports. Furthermore there are comprehensive sections on health and wellness, including information on spas, alternative treatments, healthcare providers, health checkups, and medical tourism. You will also fi nd a list of emergency numbers, including contact information for the consulates that are represented in Phuket.

Of course, the vast majority of activities you engage in will pass without incident, but there are times when health troubles or accidents can bring an unexpected end to the fun. Although some of the potential dangers mentioned in the publications may sound alarming, the information is simply meant to serve as a guide to what could – yet very rarely does

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include fatigue, headache, nausea, a slight temperature and cold, clammy skin, whereas heatstroke can give headache, weakness, confusion, a fast pulse and fl ushed skin, as well as this telltale symptom: the absence of sweating. Heatstroke is the most dangerous heat illness and can be fatal if left untreated, so learn to recognize the symptoms and seek immediate medical attention, keeping as cool as possible until help arrives.

If you have an unexpected encounter with a snake and get bitten, do NOT cut or suck the venom from the wound. Instead, apply a constrictive bandage to immobilize the limb, keep calm and seek immediate hospital treatment.

Possibly you already know what to look for before ordering your meal at a local restaurant, but considering that diarrhea and vomiting are the No.1 symptoms for travellers seeking medical attention in Phuket, perhaps a reminder is in order. In short the advice is: Follow the herd. Restaurants that are busy not only have the best reputation for food quality, but there will be a quicker turnover, so the chance that food has been left out for a long time or reheated is greatly reduced. Restaurants that have passed the Public Health Ministry’s inspection are given a “Clean Food, Good Taste” sign that may be displayed in the shop.

The reminders and advice in the 3 diff erent language versions of the health and wellness booklets diff er to some extent according to the needs and frequently asked questions from the intended audiences – English speakers, Scandinavians or Russians. However, the basic message

is the same for all nationalities: Should something unexpected happen during your stay in Phuket, keep in mind that the quality of healthcare here is relatively high and the international hospitals on the island are equipped to handle the vast majority of illness or accidents.

You can pick up your free copy of Your Health in Phuket at Phuket International Hospital and about 50 other outlets, including restaurants like Two Chef’, Wine Connection, Da Vinci and Les Anges, as well as in major hotels throughout the island.
