Feature Six Senses Phuket Raceweek 2010 Six Senses Phuket Raceweek 2010 Feature

Five nights of parties that are renowned as the best regatta parties in the region, combined with four days of high-octane yacht racing in the southwest monsoon season have elevated Six Senses Phuket Raceweek, now in its seventh year, head and shoulders above the rest.

Held from 21 to 25 July at the Evason Phuket & Six Senses Spa on Phuket’s southeast coast, Raceweek is the fi rst regatta in the 2010/2011 Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championship (AYGP).

“Yachts thinking of taking part shouldn’t be put off by thinking this is all about top racing yachts,” said Grenville Fordham, MD of organizers and rights owners Image Asia Events Co., Ltd. “We attract a strong fl eet of cruising yachts too, both monohull and multihull, and they all have a great time during Raceweek, no matter how much or little experience they have,” he added.

Regatta registration is now open via the regatta website with fabulous value ‘earlybird’ discounts on entry fees for boats and crew. A fi rst this year is the chance to win the value of entry fees for boat and full crew courtesy of Global Investments (Far East) – but you only qualify if you beat the earlybird deadline.

Another fi rst this year is the unique souvenir Raceweek apparel from sponsors Gybe that’s available online via the regatta registration page.

The organsisers were excited to announce recently that both Title Sponsor Six Senses Resorts & Spas and Co-sponsor Jaguar Cars

For more information on the regatta and to view the SSPRW 2009 TV programme:www.phuketraceweek.com email: [email protected]/watch?v=xyU8gxaWQ44For more information on sponsorship opportunities:www.paulpoole.co.th/phuketraceweek email: [email protected],[email protected] (Thai speaking) www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxFIBbPbbeI

Fordham. “We hope to attract more of the AGYP competitors this year – and, of course, hope to see Peter, Neil and Ray in the fl eet again,” he added.

Back on the sponsorship front, Jaguar Overseas Operations Director, Mick Razza, said, “In our inaugural year as Co-sponsor in 2009 we saw a remarkable rise in sales off the back of our experiential marketing at Six Senses Phuket Raceweek. We deal with marketing strategies worldwide and with Paul Poole (South East Asia) Co., Ltd. we saw a fi rst class 360° campaign that rivals the best platforms we have used in the past. We look forward with anticipation for another great week’s regatta in Phuket this year!”

SSPRW 2010 is the platform for Jaguar’s regional launch of the stunning, all-new Jaguar XJ range – with VIP guests invited from throughout Southeast Asia to experience both the regatta and the new XJ, with exciting test drives designed to put the cars through their paces set up around the island.

Already confi rmed to join Six Senses and Jaguar in the sponsorship lineup are (returning) Tourism Authority of Thailand, Siam Winery, Andaman Cabriolet, Asia-Pacifi c Boating, MyPhuketInfo.com, Phuket Gazette, Prestige Magazine, SEA Yachting and (fi rst time) Global Investments (Far East), Urbane Nomads, Gybe, YACHTstyle, AngloInfo and Mövenpick. As discussions come to fruition over the coming weeks, many more of last year’s sponsors and partners are expected to return in 2010.

“The continuation of Jaguar as a Co-sponsor in 2010 sends out a very positive sign of the importance of strategic alliances with Asia’s top sporting events,” said Paul Poole, Managing Director of Paul Poole (South East Asia) Co., Ltd., whose company has been appointed by Jaguar to manage and maximise Jaguar’s Co-sponsorship of the event and their supporting experiential marketing activity.

had announced their renewed commitment for the 2010 event. “There’s no question that both Six Senses’ and Jaguar’s continued support is down to the success of last year’s event for each of them,” said Fordham.

With the exception of 2009, Raceweek has seen the number of entries grow each year and the organisers anticipate a record fl eet for the 2010 event. “In 2008 we welcomed 43 yachts from all over the region; last year we suff ered a ‘global meltdown blip’, and were down to 33 yachts – but the standard of the fl eet was much more competitive than in previous years,” said Fordham, adding that he anticipates the opportunity to put some early points on the slate in the AYGP will be an incentive for more of the regional racing yachts to make their way up to Phuket in July.

Another development that will have those ‘in the know’ keeping a lookout is the return of last year’s surprise Multihull Winner, the brand new Phuket-built Andaman Cabriolet Niña on her fi rst outing. Nina also took fi rst place in this year’s Royal Langkawi Regatta. For Raceweek 2010 she will be accompanied by two ‘sisters’, the second Andaman Cabriolet Da Vinci and designer Alan Carwadine’s own 42 foot derivation with the same hull shape, both still undergoing fi nal preparations in the boatyard. According to a source inside Cabriolet builders Composite Catamarans, they hope to take all three podium positions in this year’s Multihull Class. Watch this space!

“Top regional racers, Neil Pryde and Ray Roberts raced here last year for the fi rst time and both were warm in their praise of our event – particularly the quality of the racing – while Asian racing veteran Peter Ahern has been coming back for several years,” said

Asked if the regatta is more about the sponsors than the sailors, Fordham responded, “At certain stages in our planning, sponsorship marketing is the key to a successful event. But nobody should doubt that our main focus as regatta organizers is to run several days of superb yacht racing in Phuket in July.” Adding that he does not believe widening the scope of Raceweek to include peripheral activities is what the sailors or the sponsors want, he said, “Our job is to focus on giving them both a great regatta and to let the world know about it. We think that’s enough,” he said.

As Paul Poole says of his success in marketing Raceweek sponsorship, “None of this [sponsorship] would be possible without a great infrastructure and edge of your seat racing.”

Southeast Asia Pilot, 3rd Edition : Extract, Pattaya, Koh Larn & Koh Sak

PATTAYA & KOH LARN50 years ago, Pattaya was a sleepy little fishing village. Then came the Vietnam War and the incursion of thousands of young American GI’s in search of rest and recreation.

The area grew at such a pace, with both Thai and foreign tourists, that the government promulgated the Pattaya City act in 1978, thereby joining Naklua and Pattaya to form the fifth local government municipality. Thus Pattaya City was born with an ever increasing influx of visitors and residents from the burgeoning surrounding industrial estates.

The latter use this whole stretch of coast as an escape from the city, resulting in crowded beaches and hotels every weekend and during school holiday periods. The 10-kilometre stretch of grossly overdeveloped coastline from Pattaya to Jomtien has also gained a reputation for its wild nightlife and overcrowded beaches.

Surprisingly, perhaps, Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC) Ocean Marina, just south of Jomtien, are havens of relative tranquillity.

PATTAYA & THE EASTERN GULFPattaya is 147 km southeast of Bangkok and faces the Gulf of Thailand. The coast southeast from Pattaya to the Cambodian border has many relatively undeveloped islands.

For the moment there is only one really safe year-round haven for yachts along this coast, Ocean Marina just south of Pattaya. There is also a good natural harbour at Sattahip, but this is used by the Royal Thai Navy and is out of bounds.

As a result, there are still not many yachts or motor cruisers plying the coast, but Ocean Marina Yacht Club has recently become active and organizes many cruising flotillas to the islands to the south.

The voyage from Pattaya to Koh Kut near the Cambodian border will certainly not lead to crowded anchorages. This trip is well worth the effort, with lots of splendid unspoiled islands to visit.

SOUTH PATTAYA BAY206 miles from Ao Nathon, Samui

A

This anchorage is secure only in the north east season. Although good holding can be found in 4-5 metres anywhere in the bay, we recommend the southern end, away from the many fishing and tour vessels.

Anchor well clear of the busy parasailing pontoons and floating restaurants scattered throughout the bay.

The sand beach is accessible by dinghy, and there is plenty of action ashore, particularly at night, with countless bars, restaurants and more along the colourful and noisy strip.

ROYAL VARUNA YACHT CLUB2 miles from South Pattaya Bay

B

Anchor only in settled weather and only near the two mooring buoys at the southern end. Stay well clear of the rock awash in the middle of the bay.

This anchorage is not recommended for overnight stays. There is often a shore break, which can upset a small tender and, during the northeast season, the beach can be depleted of sand.

The new Royal Varuna Yacht Club house offers good facilities, including a bar, a restaurant and a swimming pool. Visiting yachtsmen are warmly welcomed, but be sure to register with a committee member. Good road links into the city.

WEST KOH LARN (HAAD TEIN)7 miles from South Pattaya Bay

C

This pretty anchorage in 5-8 metres on sand is recommended only as a day stopover – a place for swimming or lunch ashore at the restaurants on Haad Tein.

Good snorkelling can be found along the outer edge of the reef that fringes the beach. Further south there is another less busy bay with resorts and restaurants ashore.

NORTH KOH LARN (HAAD SAMWAN)6 miles from South Pattaya Bay

D

Good holding can be found in 5-10 metres on a sandy bottom, lending protection in the southwest season. The sand beach makes for convenient dinghy access to the many hotels and restaurants ashore.

A very popular daytime destination for the tour boats operating out of Pattaya. Numerous speedboats and even a yellow submarine operate from the commercial jetty in the bay.

KOH SAK5 miles from South Pattaya Bay

E

This small horseshoe-shaped island has a well-sheltered bay in the southerly season. Anchor in about 4-6 metres on a sandy bottom in clear water off the fringing coral reef.

NOTE: On the passage from this group of islands to Pattaya, avoid the area around Hin Koh Larn, about 1.5 miles east of Koh Krok. Do not rely on the marker buoy, which is frequently washed away or which drags during rough weather. Anchoring at Koh Krok, a private island, is not permitted.

Swim ashore on Koh Sak to a basic seafood restaurant. The island used to be an exclusive resort for Thailand’s rich and famous, though it is now rather rundown. On the footpath leading south from the beach you’ll see the foot and hand prints of many famous visitors, including some old Hollywood legends.

May you live a long lifeFull of gladness and healthWith a pocket full of goldAs the least of your wealthMay the dreams you hold dearestBe those which come trueThe kindness you spreadKeep returning to you.

The staff of the JW Marriott including GM, Robert Lohrmann, F&B Manager, Richard Taff s, and Head of Banqueting, Chakrit Jatupornpisate, did a sterling job to make the event fantastic. John Northern the JW Marriott Regional Manager was fantastic at securing prizes from all Marriott hotels, and even The Marriott Druid’s Glen in Co. Wicklow, Ireland.

The style was sensational and lots of eff ort went into many outfi ts. Denise Cortez, Boom Ydmark and Khun Niparda Srissaard were among the women who looked amazing. The free-fl owing wine and beer was complemented by the Irish Times pub drinks on off er. The entertainment was provided by Sophie Tanapura, a highly-acclaimed opera singer, and Nattaporn Pakalong, a young Thai violinist, who played with a constant adorable smile. What a talent she has! Live performances by the Roaring Bhoys kept everyone in high spirits, and dancing until the early hours of the morning. The luck of the Irish was truly in abundance that evening.

Many thanks to Matthew Burns, the photographer for the evening, who gave his time and energy and expertise free, and with a permanent smile always getting the best out of every shot he took. Everyone who participated in the event that night was a winner, in that they were there to help support a very worthy cause, while having a wonderful craic!

The Life Home Project would like to thank the many generous sponsors, far too many to mention here but you‘ll all have received our letters of thanks by now, hopefully! A well-deserved, big thank-you must also go out to HE Eugene Hutchinson and his wife Adele, Doctor Bodhin of Bangkok Hospital Phuket, Khun Thanawat and his wife form the Phuket Passport Offi ce and Dr Anon from the Phuket Health Department. The recent UK budget is excellent news for the student accommodation market. The government has announced the allocation of an extra £250 million, to create an additional 20,000 university places for students. With the need for quality accommodation already exceeding the supply, this news will increase demand for the existing space. As supply/demand ratios are a major factor in driving prices, this is good news for investors in the student accommodation sector.

Brandeaux was a pioneer in providing private student accommodation in the late 1990s, and is now one of the largest investors in the sector. The UK-based Fund has a portfolio across with more than 15,000 beds, in residences located in 18 major university towns and cities. Incredibly, the Sterling Fund which was launched on the 15 June 2000 has never posted a losing month, and has achieved an average growth of 9.7% p.a. since inception.

The fund objectives are to deliver consistent annualised positive returns of 8% to 10% over a rolling three to fi ve year period while maintaining a profi le of low volatility performance.

Brandeaux’s student accommodation portfolio of residences is already over 82% booked for the coming 2010/2011 university year beginning late September, so it is well on track to maintain 100% occupancy. With net rental increases for 2010/2011 up nearly 8% over 2009/2010 prices, Brandeaux Student Accommodation Fund (£) looks set for another year of top-of-target performance.

The US$ denominated Brandeaux Student Accommodation Fund which invests solely in Brandeaux Student Accommodation Fund (£), has a currency hedge to mitigate the eff ect of exchange rate fl uctuations between US$ and Sterling.

Another way of entering the Student Accommodation market is to spread your investment over a wider region, so as to reduce any volatility or risk. The Coral Student Accommodation Fund off ers investors the opportunity to participate in the growing sector of student accommodation by investing not in the buildings themselves, but in the companies that own and manage the properties. This approach is known as a ‘Fund of Funds’.

Last month we talked about university and school fees funding. It seems logical to continue in this vein, by sharing with you, details of two very exciting student accommodation funds.

George Lindsay is Wealth Manager at Expat Solutions

a fi nancial planning consultant with Expat Solutions and he can be contacted Tel: +66 (0)89 868 5143. Email: [email protected] for a free consultation about student accommodation funds and other aspects of fi nancial planning.

As such, the Coral Student Accommodation Fund invests in established UK schemes and providers, while also benefi ting from the enormous opportunities, emerging in Western Europe. By spreading exposure to several established specialist providers, the fund aims to maximise returns, and minimise dependency on one single fund or provider.

The fund was launched in March 2009 and has attracted a lot of investment during its opening year. Returns have ranged from 8% in the Euro fund, 9% in the dollar fund and 10% in the sterling fund. This is right on the target of 8-10% p.a.

With security for our money on everyone’s mind, it’s important to know where a fund is based and how it’s regulated. The Coral Student Accommodation Fund is based in Luxemburg. Luxemburg off ers investors the security and knowledge that the fund is highly regulated, and is monitored. The custodian for the Fund (where the money is held) is Deutsche Bank Luxembourg: again regulated.

In conclusion, for those investors looking to access a non-traditional package, investment in the Student Accommodation sector looks very inviting. The sector is non-correlated to the traditional stocks and bonds market that has seen so much volatility in the past few years, which means that while the rest of the market might be a cause for concern, this sector would seem to have a bright and steady future ahead.

About the Chef Maître Cuisinier de France, Jean-Noël Lumineau

Maître Cuisinier de France Jean-Noël Lumineau was appointed by M.L. Tri Devakul to oversee his four restaurants in Phuket: The Boathouse Wine & Grill, Mom Tri's Kitchen and the two latest restaurant venues, Mom Tri's Oasis in Kata and Mom Tri's Boathouse Regatta at the Royal Phuket Marina.

For over 25 years, Chef Lumineau was renowned as the Executive Chef at the Gault-Millau (16/20) and the Michelin-star rated Château-Hôtel Le Prieuré in the Loire Valley in the province of Anjou, France. He lectured at the University of Angers teaching License and Master Classes in the subjects of food and restaurant management, and in his spare time he became a Cap-10 acrobatic

Heat olive oil and 10 gm of butter in a pan, and add seared fi llets of Phuket sole and seared king prawns. Remove cooked fi sh, and brown in the same pan with 20 gm of butter. Add capers, chopped parsley and lemon juice, cook through and reserve.

In a second pan, warm 10 gm of butter, and cook chopped shallot and garlic without browning. Add cooked vegetables and seasoning, and warm through for a few seconds.

Pour sauce on four warmed plates. Add vegetables, prawns and fi llets in the centre of the plate, and decorate with lemon segments.

Bon appétit!

fl yer. More than 12 years ago he earned his distinction as Maître Cuisinier de France, an elite group of the most famous chefs in the world. There are only about 300 worldwide, with this accolade of merit.

In 2000, a friend recommended Jean-Noël should meet with a French compatriot, Mr. Louis Bonner, the General Manager of Mom Tri's Boathouse.

Owner of the Boathouse, Mom Tri, a connoisseur of good wine and food, was so impressed with Jean-Noël, he invited him to host a yearly Boathouse ‘Festival Grand Cru et Gastronomie’, a two week celebration of French cuisine. Additionally Mom Tri sent the chefs from the Boathouse Wine & Grill and Mom Tri's Kitchen, to study with Chef Lumineau at the castle in France.

Then Chef Lumineau spoke to Mr. Bonner about retiring from Le Prieuré and shifting his focus to training, making menus and creating new recipes. Not missing a good opportunity, Mom Tri immediately off ered him the position of consultant for his restaurants including the two new ventures, Mom Tri's Oasis and Mom Tri's Boathouse Regatta at Royal Phuket Marina.

Versatile by nature, Chef Lumineau enjoys the challenge of working in Thailand as he likes to experiment. He says, “Food must retain the individual fl avours of the ingredients. I’m interested in the mix, the original taste of the best quality ingredients with an Asian fusion. Thailand has an enormously interesting selection of food. There are so many new possibilities with the spices, and an abundant choice of fi sh and seafood. Thai cuisine is very diverse with plenty of fl avours.”

'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it.

Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff , with teak fl oors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket.

Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence seven years in succession.

The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the fi nest selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai delicacies to perfection.

The fi rst thing that you will notice are the friendly staff . The smiles, the attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

With the recommendation "so have a jolly good time and Bon Appetit", you might ask how an evening could NOT be both an exciting and satisfying one. Throw in the fi xings of traditional English cooking where items are all prepared from scratch using the freshest ingredients, add the fl avourings of the well-known and charismatic chef on BBC programs, Keith Floyd, and then serve it up in a unique indoor/outdoor yet enclosed area at the Burasari Resort. What you have is the smart yet casual Floyd’s Brasserie.

A sampling of dishes includes Phuket Lobster and Fish Soup, the Crispy Duck Leg on Herb Salad, Tournedos Rossini, Fresh Phuket Lobster Thermidor, North Sea Salmon – three of Floyd’s favourites – and the Trio of Seafood.

Floyd's imbues a multifaceted nature with a warm ambience where good hearty food is prepared in the open kitchen and Asian style wooden chairs and tables line the pool while more formal white tablecloth seating is available. To top off the meal, pull up a lush comfortable chair or a bar stool in the Balinese sala which ‘sits’ in the swimming pool and relax.

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Finding a spa in Patong is easy. But if you want fi rst-class tropical treatments in a superb beachfront setting, your choice is very limited. Fortunately, the newly-opened Swasana Spa at Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa, provides the perfect answer. With two luxurious treatment rooms for couples, complete with private steam room and oversize twin Jacuzzi, one single treatment rooms and two beachfront Thai Massage rooms, Swasana Spa is unique in Patong – blending sublime treatments with a spectacular beachside location.

Whether you’re suff ering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start.

My journey began with a Herbal Steam treatment in the aromatic steam room. Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing power eases away aches and stress.

Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling smooth and silky.

Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called ‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous, fl owing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands

worked their magic on my body, I felt I had left all my worldly cares and tension behind.

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage with natural creams, this treatment cleansed and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles. With all my senses heightened, I detected the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough to eat, but alas just one of the natural ingredients in the creams my therapist was using. This one is a must for anyone thinking of having a ‘face lift’!

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

The aim of the spa is to off er clients a new kind of spa experience, one that is truly holistic, tailor-made and designed to rejuvenate and energise and ultimately provide the knowledge, tools and support that is required to create a better quality of life for all. It is our mission to deliver spa experiences that are both unique and memorable, and very much beyond expectations.

The pyramid of six spheres used to identify Six Senses Spas, represents the philosophy that is fundamental to the human experience whereby the foundation spheres represent the three primary senses of sight, sound and touch. The second level balances upon this foundation by satisfying the more acute senses of taste and smell. The apex sphere symbolizes a sense of elation discovered only by balancing the fi rst fi ve - the unique experience of all senses elevated beyond expectations.

Six Senses has created a body temple incorporating the principles of feng shui using fi re and water, which delights beyond all expectations. The spa is open and spacious in design, utilising the beautiful outdoors for Asian style treatments and indoor treatment rooms for specialised and signature therapies. Couples treatment rooms with sunken Jacuzzis are available for mini day and day package getaways or a la carte treatments.

What do you like and dislike about living in Phuket? I love Phuket’s seas and beaches. In the north, we only have mountains. It makes a nice contrast.

How is Phuket from your point of view? It’s very beautiful, deserving of its sobriquet, ‘Pearl of the Andaman Sea’.

Which areas of Phuket do you like most? I like the Sino-Portuguese style buildings in Phuket City. They have their own superb charm and provide a beautiful ambience. These buildings tell stories of topography, weather, history, society, nationality and the origins of Phuket.

How do you divide time between yourself and your family? I don’t divide the time. I do both at the same time, working and taking care of the family.

Could you tell us about your lifestyle? Did it change after you got married and had kids? I accept that there were a few changes. I now have to think about my children’s future before I decide to do something. For all that I have these extra responsibilities. I still think I have a pretty easy-going lifestyle.

Please tell us briefl y about your background. I’m originally from Chiang Mai. After graduating with a law degree from Chiang Mai University, I spent fi ve years working as a lawyer for Kad Suan Kaew shopping mall. I then joined the Koolpan Villa Project, Chiang Mai for fi ve years. After that, I started my own law and accounting offi ce.

How did you get into the business of decorations? Back when I was an employee I undertook an accountancy consulting job collaborating with my girlfriend, who was running a jewellery business based on the brand, Silverado. They export their products to more than 20 countries worldwide. Clearly, the product had an international appeal. I began looking for a suitable place to market the product line. Phuket was an obvious choice, so I invited the manufacturer to make a trip here. It was my fi rst visit, too. Eventually, we decided to open a showroom on the island.

What was your personal motivation in starting the business? I love to be close to everything beautiful.

How’s it going? After six months, we’re getting a very positive reaction from our customer base. We now plan to open more showrooms. We’re the only agency importing the Silverado range.

What is the design concept of Silverado? The product is fashionable and constantly innovative, internationally.

Which countries do they particularly target? The major targets are countries in Europe, America and Australasia. Now we are starting to hit the Asian market.

What is your style of leadership? I think the working environment is the important thing for me. We aim to minimise the stresses in the workplace, and narrow the gap between employer and employee.

How old are you? I’m 41 years old.

What is your marital status? I married a Khon Khan girl who I met at university. We have two children, one son and a daughter, both of whom are in Chiang Mai.

What is the plan for your kids? The plan is to ensure that they grow up in a stable environment. In due course, I would hope that they’ll join the family business. However, if they don’t like this, they can make any choice they want.

What is the secret of success in life? Choose a reliable line of business which you love doing. Simple really.

If you fi nd yourself upset or in a bad mood, how can you get back on track? Just try to calm down, and then you’ll forget whatever was bothering you.

Do you mostly work in Phuket? No, my family is Chiang Mai, so I only come here for work once or twice a month, maybe four or fi ve days at a time

Whereabouts do you stay in Phuket, when you visit? I choose a hotel in the Ku Ku area because it’s peaceful, and I know the owner of that hotel – we’re both from Chiang Mai.

RENTALS DAILY/MONTHLYIn the wake of the ‘underpants’ bomber incident in the United States on Christmas day, last year security at airports around the world, and this will include Phuket International Airport (PIA), is about to get a major shakeup. As you’ll doubtless have heard, a young Nigerian terrorist tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines fl ight, approaching Detroit from Amsterdam in Holland. Thankfully, he was overpowered by passengers before he could activate the plastic explosives strapped to his body.

It was a wakeup call to the international aviation community. At a recent Asia-Pacifi c security conference in Tokyo, held to examine ways of combating this new vulnerability, Japan’s transport minister Seiji Maehara said, “While we strengthen security measures, new forms of terrorism may possibly be planned to outdo them.”

This was from a country like Japan where the likelihood of a similar bomb attempt is quite low. The same could be said of Thailand. While bombs go off with alarming regularity in the deep south because of the insurgency there, Thailand is not on the list of countries where there’s a high probability of a terrorist attack of this nature.

Nonetheless, no one can aff ord to be complacent these days. Consequently, at the Tokyo security conference Asia-Pacifi c countries, including Thailand, vowed to boost international security standards and measures, including the installation of screening technology.

In fact there have been three such conferences since January – in Europe, and in North and South America. Following on from these meetings, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a United Nations body dealing with aviation security, will meet in September to map out an overall strategy to improve international aviation security.

The Asia-Pacifi c conference agreed to share expertise and best practices in screening and inspection techniques, weapons detection, explosive and hazardous materials handling, and the training of human resources such as sky marshals.

Sky marshals are undercover law enforcement or counter-terrorist agents in mufti, placed on board commercial aircraft to counter terrorist attacks. Sky marshals may be provided by airlines such as Israel’s El Al (who carry sky marshals on every fl ight), or by government agencies such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the German Federal Police, the US Federal Air Marshal Service or the United Kingdom Metropolitan Police.

While these discussions and preparations are on-going, Thailand has already implemented a number of new security measures. In the past, the screening process at Bangkok and Phuket airports has been somewhat ‘relaxed’. Nowadays, procedures are much more rigorous.

New regulations have resulted in the restrictions with which most travellers will be familiar.

At Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok measures are also in place to stop an unauthorised occupation like that of the ‘yellow shirt’ protesters in 2008.

A word to the wise, with security measures continuing to get tighter, it’s a good idea to arrive at the airport earlier than you’ve done hitherto. This is particularly so, if you’re travelling to places like the United States.

Of course, many observers say that all these intrusive procedures at airports could be avoided if governments introduced measures whereby the profi le of individuals – their race, nationality, criminal record, etc. are all uploaded onto a computer, so that a potential threat to security can be identifi ed well in advance.

Feature

By Alastair Carthew, a Phuket based writer and communications advisor. Tel: +66 (0)76 317929 Email: [email protected]

The United Kingdom authorities are also getting a lot tougher. Here are some of their new security measures:

All transit passengers who travel via the UK will now be required to leave • their plane and undergo full screening checks before resuming their journeys. There will be increased searches of passengers.• Airports will make increasing use of explosive trace detection technology • and sniff er dogs.Airports will be introducing advanced imaging technology, commonly • referred to as ‘body scanning’.

The body scanning measures have raised concerns about individual privacy. To address these, the UK authorities have laid out some ground rules. These include:

Passengers will be randomly selected for body scanning in the same way • that they’re currently selected for other aviation security measures, such as the removal of footwear and conventional hand searches. This selection will not be linked to race, ethnic origin, gender, or age. • Children will be included. Parents/guardians will be able to remain with • a child throughout the process, as long as they follow the instructions of security staff , and their presence doesn’t obscure the scanned image.

It does sound good in theory, but in an age when terrorists are increasingly home-grown converts to violent action, such profi ling remains an imperfect science. The authorities have to be vigilant all the time; the terrorists only need to be lucky once.

SecurityDespite some questions about the credibility of the ‘underpants’ bomber incident as reported, it has provoked a major reaction on the part of governments, security agencies and aviation authorities, which, with immediate aff ect, is going to make the life of every air traveller a little more diffi cult.

Useful info

Phromthep Cape (Laem Phromthep): This is the most popular and largest of all the view points. The area has been developed to off er extensive views over the sea and there are walking paths from the cliff s to the water's edge for the adventurous. The sunsets are absolutely breathtaking and never the same two days running. If you are romantically inclined this is the place to come in the evenings and hold hands as the setting sun paints the evening skies in towering kaleidoscopes of light and shade.

On top of Promthep Cape is a very pretty structure, the Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse which doubles as a museum. It was constructed in 1996. If you want to check the times of sunsets, ring the Phuket Meteorological & Radio Station on +66 (0)76 211494.

How to get there: Phromthep Cape is a headland on the extreme southern end of Phuket about 19 kilometres from Phuket City. You can drive there via Chalong Junction along Highway 4024 to Rawai Beach, and then follow the signs for 2 kilometres.

Windmill View Point: As the name would suggest this hilltop boasts a modern windmill – the only one on the island. It can be found on the south of Phuket between Nai Harn and Promthep. This isolated spot off ers superb views of the tiny Ya Nui Beach and the main Nai Harn Beach. There are always boats moored off both beaches and in December the anchorages really come alive as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta gets under way.

How to get there: Drive from Nai Harn Beach towards the highest hilltop and take the fi rst road on the right. You will spot the windmill on your right hand side.

Khao Kad 360° Viewpoint: Khao Kad off ers wonderful views of the Andaman Sea beaches and neighbouring islands from a diff erent perspective – from Cape Panwa in Vichit district. Sunsets are on a par with Promthep. Visitors are faced with a stiff climb up 138 steps. Once there the fresh breezes and tranquil surroundings are a suffi cient reward. The viewpoint has good parking facilities and services.

How to get there: Take Sakdidet Road as far as Baan Muang Thong (Muang Thong Village) or follow the signs to Makham Bay and turn right just before arriving at Panwa Cape. The turning is well signposted.

Rang Hill: Rang Hill lies to the northwest of Phuket City. The hilltop has been landscaped into a park and fi tness facilities are off ered. A winding tree-lined road takes you right to the summit where a sala off ers shade during the day. Once there you can enjoy views of the city and beaches on the south and southwest of the island. Try a visit at night when the lights of the city are like a million diamonds scattered on night blue silk.

How to get there: Normal saloon cars can make the climb up Rang Hill. From the Phuket Administration Offi ce Intersection take the road to Patong and after 500 metres turn right. From then on, there is only one road.

Big Buddha Mountain (Khao Nakkerd): This is believed to be the highest point in Phuket and the huge Buddha image (still under construction), dominates the surrounding landscape. The development is set in a beautiful forest area and is designated as a national park. The site off ers numerous images and statues of our Lord Buddha and Kuan Im-the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. These have been contributed by royal patrons and other senior personages. You are encouraged to make a donation towards the completion of the construction. The hill off ers 360 degree panoramic views of the island and the sea. On a clear day you can see the Phi Phi Islands in the distance.

How to get there: From Wat Chalong, drive towards Chalong and turn right at Soi Yodsane. Follow this road for six kilometres. Don't be afraid of losing the way. The route is marked by yellow fl ags bearing the symbol of a wheel from Buddha's fi rst sermon.

If you are looking for a change from the beach, why not check out the views from Phuket's hilltop view points? You will experience magnifi cent vistas, cool breezes and most view points have refreshments available. Don't forget your camera.

CholesterolUnderstanding more about cholesterol and regularly checking your cholesterol levels can greatly improve your chances of avoiding heart attacks and strokes.

HDL or High Density Lipoprotein carries between a third and a quarter of the cholesterol in the blood. It clears cholesterol from the arteries and into the liver where it’s then eliminated from the body. HDL is therefore referred to as 'good' cholesterol. Studies have shown that a HDL level of greater than 40mg/dl (milligrams per decilitre) is good, and can give some protection against heart attacks.

LDL or Low Density Lipoprotein, the villain of the piece, carries the rest of the cholesterol in the blood. Too much LDL in the blood can cause arteriosclerosis. This is the process whereby cholesterol mixes with other substances and forms plaque, the hard deposits which block arteries. If a blood clot forms near to plaque accretions in a heart artery, a heart attack can result. Similarly, a clot which blocks blood fl ow to the brain can cause a stroke. LDL should be below 130 mg/dl for a healthy person. Keep in mind that these recommended numbers change regularly based on the newest fi ndings.

A regular cholesterol check will give your total blood cholesterol. In order to fi nd out the LDL and HDL levels you need to fast overnight before a blood sample is taken. If you’re over 40 years and don’t know your cholesterol level, you really should have it checked. Prices in Phuket for a complete cholesterol test are usually less than 800 Baht and the service is available at most hospitals. It’s quick and easy.

Diet also plays a part in controlling cholesterol levels. It used to be believed that a low fat diet is the way to lower the levels. Newer studies show that it’s the types of fats in the diet, rather than the total percentage, that either raises or lowers the cholesterol levels. Dietary control is one of the most diffi cult lifestyle disciplines to achieve, but it’s vital in maintaining cholesterol levels within acceptable limits.

Regular exercise and stopping smoking are other ways to improve and maintain healthy levels. However, if all these changes don’t do the trick, drugs may be prescribed by your doctor to assist. Recent research has supported the recommendation that, if needed, medication should be prescribed. However, a good diet, regular exercise and reduced alcohol intake are always a better option than taking additional medication, so get your cholesterol levels checked, and discuss with your doctor the options that are available.

Health matters Health mattersCholesterol

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance. It’s found with the fats in the bloodstream and cells. Our bodies do need a certain amount of cholesterol for many functions, including the formation of cell membranes and the synthesis of vitamin D.

The body produces its own cholesterol and other sources are mainly animal products like meat, egg yolks, whole-milk products

and seafood, which we ingest. The liver removes some of the excess, but the rest is deposited on the inside of the arteries, and herein lies the problem.

The cholesterol can’t dissolve in the blood so it has to be transported by carriers called lipoproteins. There are two main kinds of lipoproteins, HDL and LDL.
