Most islands are uninhabited, offering secluded anchorages under soaring cliffs fringed with jungle, as well as fascinating dinghy expeditions to hidden beaches, caves and creeks not shown on charts or maps. Three rivers run into the head of the bay so the water is silty, though otherwise clean, forming a milky green backdrop to the striking scenery.

Since a large part of the area north of Koh Yao is shallow (less than 10 metres), it is possible to anchor virtually anywhere in north Phang Nga Bay. This chapter, then, focuses only on the more suitable overnight anchorages – those which provide shelter from the squalls and storms which can hit unexpectedly, particularly in the southwest monsoon season.

Some of the area covered by this section is National Park and rangers patrol around the islands. The entry fee is 200 Baht per boat and 200 Baht per day per person on board, which is collected on the spot.

NORTH PHANG NGA BAYThe sheer-sided sea mountains that rise vertically out of Phang Nga Bay form some of Thailand’s most spectacular scenery. Images of Phang Nga have travelled the world and shaped perceptions of southern Thailand, and the boating experiences to be had here.

As a result the cruising yachtsman may encounter many tour boats and sea canoes during the middle of the day, but tranquillity returns by late afternoon. While the bay itself is not so large, the number of islands, inlets and mangrove channels ensure that no matter how long a yachtsman spends here, new experiences will always be nearby.

We list only 21 of the many anchorages in this area. Much of the joy of sailing in Phang Nga, after all, lies in discovering the uncounted creeks, caves and coves for yourself.

Koh Ngam

Koh Chong Lat

Koh Khlui

KOH CHONG LAT & KOH KHLUI CHANNELAccess to the channel

The deep entrance to the north of Koh Chong Lat is easily navigable, as is the middle entrance just north of Koh Khlui. The middle entrance should be approached on an easterly heading, turning southeast between the islands.

Inside the main channel between Koh Chong Lat and the mainland, immediately north of the middle passage, is a dangerous area of shallow water with drying rocks. This should be left well to port if heading north.

If entering the main channel from the south, it’s better to stay close to Koh Khlui which will afford a minimum depth of 3 metres.

When entering from the north it is better to pass through the narrow channel between Koh Ngam and Koh Chong Lat which is deep rather than passing north of Koh Ngam where there is a very large drying bank.

NORTHERN CHANNEL25 miles from Yacht Haven

A

This is a quiet location with beautiful views of the sheer cliffs of Koh Chong Lat to the west. The anchorage is on a direct line between the two islets shown on the chart, in 8-10 metres, near a lovely mangrove-covered flat, which is awash at high tide.

This spot is good for all wind conditions, though mid tide currents of up to 3 knots mean that care should be taken if swimming from the boat.

Local lore has it that there are no longer any crocodiles in the area, although there are families of sea otters which can be spotted at dusk.

This has been used as an overnight anchorage for the Phang Nga Bay Regatta which is held every year during Chinese New Year and attracts over 50 yachts.

To the east on the mainland at Leam Sak village is an excellent seafood restaurant which can be accessed directly by dinghy at high tide or via a concrete jetty on the other side of the headland at the head of a mangrove creek.

MIDDLE PASSAGE24 miles from Yacht Haven

B

Anchorage can be found in the passage in 4-5 metres, making for a good overnight stop in either season. To the north and south large and scenic bays with shallow waters are easily reached by dinghy. The bay to the south is an ideal anchorage for bilge keelers or vessels drawing less than 1 metre.

KOH KLUI EAST23 miles from Yacht Haven

C

Koh Khlui East is very sheltered, with good holding in the southwest monsoon season. The best anchorage is just south of the small inlet in about five metres. This is also the best place from which to explore the bay and rocky outcrops to the north by dinghy.

No one can properly predict the nature of work and life opportunities that will be available for today’s primary age children by the time they are adults. Many of the jobs they will have don’t yet exist; especially in the fi elds of ICT, technology and science. So the IPC focuses on a skills-based approach, developing adaptable and resilient globally-minded learners, prepared for the fast-changing world that they’ll be living and working in.

Our 2012 headliner is the American blues artist/actor who has sold more records and appeared in more successful movies than any other blues performer this century: Mr. Chris Thomas King. King has no less than three Grammy awards to his name and his role in the Coen brothers' fi lm ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ in 2001 gained him an international mainstream audience. Telling the story of down-home blues singers in Mississippi, the movie starred George Clooney, and King played the role of Tommy Johnson, a true-to-life blues singer from the 1930s. Of the songs on the movie's Grammy-winning soundtrack, King's ‘Hard Time Killing Floor Blues’ was the only one recorded live during fi lming. The soundtrack reached number one on the billboard charts and has sold over ten million copies. King closes the Festival Saturday night.

Another worthy newcomer is Sweden’s number one guitar slinger - legendary Clas Yngstrom & Sky High whose career span almost 35 years of rocking the blues. They have tirelessly toured the world and performed with and befriended ZZ Top, BB King, Chuck Berry, Edgar & Johnny Winter, Albert Collins and the list goes on. Need we say more? Sky High will play Friday 24th.

From Ireland comes Grainne Duff y, a young, chic girl rocker whose credentials include the world’s number one festival: Glastonbury. Say no more.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and

procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the “Be Balanced” package; a 3 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This three-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awakening your sense. The scrub was followed by Sukko Special Body Massage, performed by hands, using fi nger pressure on energy points and smooth strokes along energy lines. During the movements of the massage, the molecules of essential oils in Sukko elegant aromatic massage oils will be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream to benefi t the nervous system and other parts of the body. “Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?” my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm…perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt.

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities, including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Thai Martial Arts’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-defense.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Open daily 9:00 – 20:00 hrs.Tel: +66 (0)76 271233

10/2 Srisoonthorn Rd., Cherngtalay, Thalang, Phuket 83100Website: www.lemongrasshouse.com

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

People Profi le

Andy Andersen, founder and organiser of the Phuket International Blues Rock Festival, tells how his travels and lifestyle are sparked by his passion for the blues, yet he always tries to see the sunny side of life.

Andy Andersen

For further information about Phuket International Blues Rock FestivalTel: +66 (0)86 682 2639Email: [email protected]: www.phuketbluesfestival.com

Where are you from? I was born in Norway, but moved to the US in 1975 to pursue my dream to fl y. A few years after completing fl ight school, I got my dream job as pilot with United Airlines, where I worked for over 20 years before retiring. In America I lived in South Florida and Los Angeles.

When did you fi rst come to Phuket? My fi rst visit was on vacation in 1998. I stayed at the Dusit Laguna Resort (now the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket) on Bang Tao Beach. Within a few days of being here I decided that this was the place I wanted to retire. I now spend about eight months a year in Phuket, and rest of the year I’m at my home in Florida or in Norway.

Tell us about the upcoming Phuket International Blues Rock Festival.I’m excited for this year’s show, which will be the biggest yet. For the fi rst time, it will be held at Laguna Phuket and we expect to bring in a lot of Laguna resort guests plus many expats living in the area.

Our main act will be Chris Thomas King of New Orleans, who appeared in the Coen brothers’ movie O Brother Where Art Thou in 2001 and performed on the movie’s Grammy-winning soundtrack. The soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 10 million copies. Separately, King has sold more records and appeared in more successful movies than any other blues artist this century.

Also appearing will be Irish girl rocker Grainne Duff y; Jack Derwin and John Meyer from Australia, Sweden's #1 blues rock act Sky High. Local blues acts joining the festival include Colin Hill Band with Jimmy Fame and PJae Stanley as well as The Rockin' Angels with Mojo Perry. Laguna guests at four resorts will also be treated to afternoon acoustic performances by some of the bands.

What made you decide to launch a music festival in Phuket? In 2005, the one-year anniversary of the tsunami was approaching. I knew there would be a lot of sad events to commemorate the disaster, so I wanted to organize something positive. This fi rst festival, held in late December 2005, was a total disaster weather-wise. The fi eld on the Hilton resort grounds were soaked and we had to move everything inside. We still managed to pull it off , but some bands cancelled and turnout on the fi rst night was poor. After that we moved the festival to late February and have enjoyed great weather every year since.

Before 2005 I had never organized big music events. I just love this kind of music and thought it would be a great event for Phuket. I've traveled the world and enjoyed music festivals, big and small, like Sweden's best blues festival in the small, quaint town of Åmål, Sweden.

What has surprised you the most in organising the festival? Dealing with the bureaucracy. For each musician coming in from another country you need to submit more than 30 pages of paperwork for a work permit that’s needed for only two hours of playing. You really need competent people to help navigate this, and I’m pleased that one of our sponsors, the International Law Offi ce, is providing assistance.

Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? What determined your choice of location?I have a townhome at Laguna, near where I stayed on my fi rst visit to Phuket. I really like the lifestyle here, with the huge beach at Bang Tao, the lagoons,

and all the nice hotels, restaurants and facilities at Laguna that I can use. I had looked around everywhere on Phuket for a home to buy, but I ended up coming back here.

What are your favourite places to go to in Phuket?

For live music, there’s only one place to go: the Rockin’ Angels bar in Phuket City. For brunch, I go to the Indigo Pearl. For the best Italian food, there is La Gaetana in Phuket City. And I do spend a lot of time at the beach. It’s a very important part of my life here.

What do you like most about living in Phuket?

The people, the food, the weather and the lifestyle. You have everything here; whatever you want you can fi nd.

What's the most frustrating thing about living here?

The traffi c has gotten absolutely ridiculous. They desperately need to build some overpasses. I hardly ever go to Patong, but I hear about the atrocious things that the tuk-tuk drivers are doing to the tourists. It’s amazing that this can go on and it seems the authorities are unable to do anything about it.

What do you think the future holds for you?

I’m happy to wake up every day in good health, with a positive outlook. I simply hope to live for several more years and enjoy myself. As it says on our festival website phuketbluesfestival.com, “Today is a GIFT. That's why we call it The Present.” I also hope to make the festival bigger and better each year.

Are you involved in any other local charities, clubs or associations?

The festival is a charity event and proceeds will go to the Patong Rotary Club’s children’s education fund. In previous years we’ve raised as much as 100,000 baht and hope to raise more this year.

I was very fortunate to be able to go to school, get a good education and pursue my dreams. I hope to be able to help some local children to do the same.

Thai law contains numerous regulations governing foreign investment and company formation in the Kingdom. The general rule is that foreign investors cannot own more than 49% of a corporate entity formed in Thailand. Moreover, such an entity must have more Thai shareholders than foreign shareholders. Where a Thai company owns land it is recommended that any foreign shareholding be reduced from the maximum allowable of 49% to 39%. However, if an investment project falls within the right set of criteria, it is possible for foreign investors to obtain special exemptions to these restrictions.

Under Thailand’s amended Investment Promotion Act (B.E. 2532) and related regulations, foreign investors may apply to the Ministry of Industry’s Board of Investment (“BOI”) to obtain special permission to establish a foreign-controlled company in Thailand. In addition to majority foreign ownership, BOI-approved entities are eligible for special tax incentives, and may even own land. However, the use of the land owned by the BOI company must be related to the BOI approved business activity of the company. The BOI approved company should not be viewed as a shell for usurping the restriction on foreign ownership of land laws in Thailand. This article will provide an overview of the BOI, including eligible investment activities, BOI investment policies, and general criteria for project approval.

Eligible Investment Activities

Only investment projects that fall under a specifi c set of activities are eligible for approval by the BOI. The activities are:

Agriculture and Agricultural Products;•

Mining, ceramics and base metals;•

Light Industry;•

Metal Products, Machinery and Transport Equipment;•

Electronics Industry and Electric Appliances;•

Chemicals, Paper and Plastics; and•

Services and Public Utilities.•

Each of the eligible investment activities listed above is subject to its own set of specifi c conditions necessary for approval. Moreover, it is important to note that conditions vary greatly depending on the investment project’s specifi c activity. For example, certain steps involved in the manufacture of textile products, which falls under the “light industry” category, must take place in specifi c industrial estates. As such, the investor should be well aware of the conditions attached to their specifi c investment activity.

Policies for Investment Promotion

The BOI evaluates a proposed investment project using a set of broad policy guidelines that are deemed benefi cial for Thailand as a whole. As such, a proposed investment project must establish that it will benefi t the Thai economy. A project that will hire and train a large number of Thai workers, for example, will increase its approval chances, but it should be noted that even a competent plan to hire and train Thai workers may not ensure approval with the BOI. Additionally, priority may be given by the BOI to investment projects that are located in developing regions with inadequate investment facilities, and to small -and medium-sized industries. The BOI has noted in the past that priority may also given to: agricultural activities and products, technological

products; human resources development; utilities; infrastructure and provision of basic services; and environmental protections and conservation.

Criteria for Approval

In addition to examining the proposed investment project under the broad policies described above, the BOI applies specifi c criteria to evaluate a project. These criteria generally include (subject to announced Ministerial regulations issued from time to time):

the project’s value-added is not less than 20% of sales revenue (except • products that manufacture elewctronics, agricultural activities and products, and products granted special approval by the BOI);

a newly-established project’s debt-to-equity ratio should not exceed three-• to-one (established projects are evaluated on a case-by-case basis);

modern production facilities and new machinery are used, or the effi ciency • of old machinery is certifi ed by reliable institutions and granted special approval by the BOI;

adequate environmental protections are used;•

for projects with investment capital exceeding 80 million baht (excluding the • cost of land and working capital), a feasibility study must be submitted.

Separate criteria apply to concession projects or projects that involve the privatization of a state enterprise.

Conclusion

While equity and land ownership restrictions generally apply to most foreign-invested projects in Thailand, BOI-approval provides investors with a special alternative. Moreover, BOI-approved projects usually are also granted various tax incentives. As such, investors should carefully consider whether their investment project is eligible for BOI approval.

Big ideas for Phuket are usually concocted and carried out by starry-eyed entrepreneurs. But the biggest idea for the island yet comes from a surprising source: the sacred beliefs of a peaceful religion born more than 2,500 years ago.

Rising from the hills of Chalong, forming a gleaming presence that can be seen from clear across Phuket’s south, sits the Big Buddha. A decade ago, the huge statue was commissioned for a temple in Kata, but at some point someone looked up to the top of the verdant hill rising behind the temple and thought, “Why not?” Thus, an ambitious plan was born.

The Big Buddha project is helmed by Suporn Wanichakul, Chairman and Founder of the Phra Phuttha Ming Mongkol Eaknakakeeree Foundation, who says that not only is the project an homage to the Buddha, it aims to promote cultural tourism in Phuket and introduce visitors to a side of the island away from Patong’s party zone. “Now, when people think of Phuket they will not only think of beer or ago-go bars with girls dancing around a pole,” he says.

Predictably, perhaps, if you believe the Buddha’s pronouncement that “life is suff ering”, the rise of the Big Buddha has not been without its problems.

A project of religious signifi cance resting well above the island’s 80-metre limit on construction makes for a tangled web of building approvals and concessions. It culminated in July last year when local offi cials complained that the project had not been completed within the permitted scope and timeline, and ordered it to be fi nished this year. Khun Suporn says that the statue is now complete, though the area around the base of the monument is still in development.

Before reaching the steps to the Buddha, visitors pass through a large hall with amulets and other religious artefacts for sale, and donation boxes aplenty. The sparkling white marble that adorns the Buddha statue’s exterior, from the spiral hair pieces to the ears and fi ngernails, was paid for, piece by piece, by visitors and locals keen to add their names as benefactors to the project.

Indeed, the entire project has been fi nanced by donations alone, a remarkable feat that shows Phuket’s solid economic standing and international appeal. Visitors are invited to donate a set amount for one square marble tile, on which they may write a message. Tiles on display show an incredible variety of languages, hopes and well-wishes.

But has it been too much of a good thing? Has the overfl owing car park and packs of tour groups tromping around cluelessly undermined its sanctity and meaning? On a frenetic island where money is sacred, is the sacred now at risk of turning into a money machine?

Phuket’s a place where everything happens at a fast-forward pace. For hundreds of years since the tin-mining days of yore, dreams of riches have been at the centre of the island’s energy.

The struggle of the Big Buddha’s direction could be seen as a microcosm of Phuket’s larger struggle to balance money, power, culture and community. It’s the burning question on the mind of many for Phuket: “What next?”

On the Big Buddha hilltop, however, there are encouraging signs to be found. In the large meditation hall on one afternoon, a small group of Thais and foreign tourists are seen receiving blessings from two monks, a peaceful scene familiar to anyone living in Thailand, but for visitors it reveals the contemplative, tender side of Thai culture not always evident in the brash tourist areas.

And one need only look to the monument itself for more answers and inspiration. Fittingly for Phuket, an island with hedonistic pleasures aplenty, the Big Buddha silently sends a message of calm and spiritual strength through its seated subduing Mara pose.

Width : 25.45 metres at the base.

Height : 45 metres, making it 10 metres taller than Christ the in Rio de Janeiro and nearly as tall as New York’s Statue of Liberty, which is 46 metres from foot to torch.

Made with : Reinforced concrete adorned with white jade Burmese arble.

Daily visitors : As many as 1,500 in high season.

Dress appropriately. Shoulders and the legs above the knees must be covered.

In Buddhist lore, Mara was a demon who was something of an ancient Soi Bangla sex-show tout. During the young prince Siddhartha’s journey towards enlightenment, he was met by this devil of desire. Mara inundated him with a host of naughty temptations, even off ering up his own young daughters, in an attempt to lure him away from his spiritual path.

To fend off the overwhelming feelings of lust, longing and hunger, Siddhartha sat in meditation and pointed the fi ngers of his right hand down towards the ground, summoning the earth goddess Toranee. A statue of Toranee is housed in a shrine by the steps to the Big Buddha.

Wringing her long hair, Toranee released a fl ood of water that washed Mara away, helping clear the way for Siddhartha to become the Buddha, the Enlightened One.

Though Phuket’s Big Buddha project is no stranger to scepticism and controversy, one thing is certain: those of us who might feel lost in paradise at times now have a gentle, guiding beacon to look for in the sky.

Phuket Thai Hua Museum The oldest Chinese school in Phuket, Thai Hua School was built in 1911 and has now become the Thai Hua Museum, serving as a community and exhibition centre for baba arts and culture.

The museum is a two-storey building with the upper level balconied internally to look down on the ground fl oor. Many of the exhibits and artifacts relate to the art and culture of China. Some of the old schoolrooms still remain as they were in the past with old school desks and photographs of former students.

The Phuket Thai Hua Museum is on Krabi road. It’s open on Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 8pm. Entrance is free. It's certainly worth a visit.

Old Phuket TownMuch of Phuket’s development has taken place in the last ten years and the building style is resolutely modern – some say, stridently so; but parts of Phuket City are little changed from a hundred years ago. At that time the island was a busy trading port and supported a thriving tin mining industry. The then captains of industry built their prestigious homes in the Sino-Portuguese style. Narrow housefronts ornately decorated with red and gold, the mystic signs representing sacred guardians of the access, yielded to storied accommodations with tall ceilings and interiors often incorporated delightful gardens. Nowadays the streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, speciality restaurants and more. Well worth a visit.

You could be dreaming of a tropical oasis, under the palm trees, listening to the waves lap onto the beach whilst having a gentle and soothing massage. Take your pick, it could be a foot massage, a body scrub or even a full course aromatherapy course lasting 3 hours or more. This is heaven.

Massage

The best part of it all is that getting a good massage in Phuket is easy. Either ask a Thai female friend who was trained by her mother and for years gave dad a massage in the evenings, or go to one of the many establishments around the island off ering massage services. Massage is very popular on the island as more and more spa and massage centres open, some of which look more like 5star hotels and others which, whilst cheaper, off er

more than massage services. Be aware that prices, and standards of service, vary widely. You could pay as little as 150 baht for an hour of massage or indulge in a comprehensive massage-beauty treatment-body scrub package costing 8,000 baht or more. You could also get more than you bargained for, depending on your choice of establishment.

For the majority of people, a massage session will be enjoyable and benefi cial. There are however, some serious health troubles that could result from improper treatments or poor hygiene. To avoid such dangers, be choosy in selecting the establishment, and if you do it cheap, follow the advice below.

Most of the better massage outlets are designed in soothing, natural tones and textures and a fragrant smell of incense or burning oil usually emanates the rooms. There’s generally an unhurried pace, and you’ll be given plenty of time to shower, settle in and make yourself comfortable before your session begins.

Ideally, your therapist will discuss the treatment with you before it begins but this is not always done, especially at smaller, less expensive places where staff may have had minimal training and cannot communicate with you, unless you are fl uent in Thai. If you have a health problem, such as a bad back, arthritis or a skin condition, let your therapist know, and be strict about not aggravating it.

If you’re having a Thai massage, your therapist will normally follow a set routine and will not deviate from this routine unless you demand it. It’s traditional, and the routine is handed down from generation to generation, and at each teaching school from teacher to student. In small massage places giving traditional Thai massage, your therapist maybe uncomfortable if you interrupt her routine.

If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, ensure you do not overdo the stretching and exercising and if chest pain presents, cease the treatment immediately. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, ensure that the herbs and massage oils will not cause a reaction. You can always test them fi rst, by adding a test to your inner forearm and leave it on for 20-30 minutes. If the site becomes red, infl amed or irritated, cease using it. In less reputable establishments, do not believe what is listed on the bottle or container is actually in the container. Cheap substitutes are often used as well as being watered down or have had other additives added.

Bone cracking in the neck, back, fi ngers and other areas is also common in many massages, particularly Thai massage. I and many orthopedic surgeons would recommend against the therapeutic value of this bone cracking as serious injury can and frequently does occur. This also applies to the practice

of walking on people’s backs. Applying continued pressure over the femoral arteries in the groin area to stop the blood fl ow to the legs, whilst eliciting a pleasant sensation once the blood fl ow is restored to the legs is dangerous. It has and can cause blood clots and serious health complications. Blood will coagulate and clot if it is stopped. Your therapist should never massage the front of your neck, near the carotid arteries or voice box. Massaging this area can cause your heart rate to drop to dangerous levels.

Improperly applied stretches can also lead to injury or pain in muscles and joints. I know of many clients who whilst having a Thai massage were asked by their therapist if the massage was too painful, and instead of saying yes, and possibly to avoid upsetting the masseuse, they came away with deep bruising and soft tissue injuries. Pain is your body telling you that something is not right. Heavy pain during a massage, is just not right. Deep tissue massage can also aggravate deep-vein thrombosis (blood clotting) or damage skin, muscles or internal organs.

The cleanliness of most massage establishments is of a high standard, but beware that bacteria can spread rapidly if hygienic standards are not maintained. There is a risk of catching skin and soft tissue diseases, eye, ear and urinary tract infections, gastroenteritis or more serious diseases. In cheaper establishments, bedding is not changed, therapists do not practice good personal hygiene and some have communicable diseases.
