KRABIThe stunning beach and sea-mountain scenery of Krabi is now famous, many visitors extolling some of the beaches here as amongst the most beautiful in the world.

This is a geographic extension of the karst sea mountains of Phang Nga, reaching south into deeper, clearer waters and thus offering fine snorkelling and diving. In the northeast monsoon season anchorages here are protected, though the region is completely exposed during the southwest monsoon.

First discovered by cruising yachties and backpackers some years ago, there are now several 5-star resorts and many restaurants. Yet in Ao Nang budget bungalow resorts still exist. The Sheraton and Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas have opened on beaches north and south of Ao Nang respectively.

Krabi Town, with provisioning of a similar standard to Phuket available, can be accessed from Phra Nang by longtail boat or dinghy, or by road from Ao Nang.

KOH HONG ARCHIPELAGO (KRABI)The Koh Hong archipelago is a group of small islands between Krabi and the northern part of Phang Nga Bay, and east of Koh Yao Noi. Among the small islets there are many places to anchor for swimming or lunch but, generally, depths are not ideal until close in. Often it is best to use a light anchor and rope for easy recovery.

About 5 miles to the east is the mainland of Krabi Province. In the northeast monsoon season, overnight anchorage can be found near Ao Talen, approaching the coast until you find depths of around 6 metres.

In contrast to those of northern Phang Nga Bay, the waters here are clear enough for snorkelling, with visibility best at slack water in springs, or any tide on neaps. Many of these islands have fringing coral reefs rich in colour and marine life.

Larger fish such as Spanish Mackerel, Jackfish, Rainbow Runners and Barracuda readily go for trolling lines in these waters. If unsuccessful, you can always purchase fresh fish from the many local fishing boats.

Koh Hong

KOH PAK BIA12 miles from Ao Nang, Krabi

A

This island offers a secluded anchorage – a useful stop over on the way to or from Krabi. It is acceptable overnight in the northeast monsoon season or in very calm weather. The best anchorage can be recognized by a mushroom-shaped rock in the middle of the small indentation facing south. Approach from the south until the bottom shelves to about 15 metres, and anchor on the sandy bottom.

Towards the western end of the bay lies a spectacular spit of white sand, which gives excellent access for swimming, exploring and beachcombing.

To the north of the sandy spit is an enticing bay, particularly good for snorkelling and diving. Anchoring is not advised here since large coral heads, rising from depths of about 20 metres, fringe the bay. It is best to take your dinghy from the recommended anchorage or else swim from the beach.

KOH HONG NORTH10 miles from Ao Nang , Krabi

B

National Parks moorings are provided or the bay provides protection with good holding in 15-20 metres. In the southwest monsoon season an uncomfortable ground swell sometimes curves around the eastern headland. Koh Hong is so named because of its large internal lagoon, accessible only by dinghy across a shallow reef on tides above 1 metre.

This large Hong (Thai for room) has a small entrance which sometimes has gill nets strung across its width on the ebb tide. The Hong, about 200 metres across, is the biggest in the area, and the sheer cliffs on all sides make a picturesque backdrop for photography. You can swim in the hong at high tide.

East of the entrance to the hong is a superb silica sand beach nestled between two small cliffs. At the far eastern end of the beach and behind the undergrowth is a small entrance to a deep amphitheatre limestone cave complete with bats, stalagmites and stalactites. Bring a flashlight.

KOH HONG SOUTH11 miles from Ao Nang, Krabi

C

This is an excellent overnight stop during the northeast monsoon. Anchorage is in 15-20 metres, or take a mooring if your draft allows. During the northeast season, there is a small restaurant on the beach each day, and it will open for an evening meal, if requested, before sunset.

A beautiful white silica sand beach is broken by huge monolithic rocks that provide shade on shore all day. Fringed by a coral reef, this is one of the prettiest bays in the area but is not accessible at low springs by dinghy. A National Park Ranger station is ashore; the park entrance fee is 200 baht per head.

Rich Harper and this Festival go together like wine and cheese; you can’t really imagine one without the other. For the fi fth year Rich brought his brand of original and classic blues to delight the record-breaking crowd.

Closing the show on the fi rst night was one of Australia’s foremost pop/rock musicians, Richard Clapton. 35 years after he soared to the top of the Australian charts Richard continues to be a household name ‘Down Under.’ The crowd was enthralled by this amazing talent, as the marvellous band delivered beautiful melodies and insightful lyrics.

Saturday February 27The second night saw an almost full moon rising as the Malaysian group AkashA came on stage. Since they took the Rainforest Music Festival by storm in 2008, these seven guys have toured the world. They sat cross-legged on the fl oor, playing all sorts of exotic acoustic instruments from around the planet.

Friday February 26Festival Director Andy Andersen greeted the early crowd in true blues tradition (“Gotta say it twice!”), after which he introduced the event’s new MC, DJ Danny Ogo of 91.5FM.

As you’d expect, Mr. Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson treated the early crowd to a fi ne blend of original and classic blues, accompanying himself with a variety of instruments.

The Festival was then offi cially opened by Phuket Vice-Governor Smith who gave a short speech on the importance of blues and western music in Thailand.

Classic rock was next on tap with the band, RetroVision. All Bangkok-based, the four musicians played classic numbers from every part of the globe. They rocked and rolled the early crowd and got them in the mood for the great show to come.

Next up was another international collaboration, The Rockin’ Angels with Andy Gonzales. The band, led by local blues meister Singapore Pat, worked seamlessly behind the spicy Latin rhythm and vocals of the Arizona bass player. Blues shouter Jimmy Fame was also featured, accompanied on harp by Norwegian rocker Arvid Munthe. Pat also showcased some of his new-found super-talent with 16-year-old prodigy Jeri joining half-way through, on bass guitar. Goodness, could that girl play!

Presented for the fi rst time by THAI Airways International and hosted again by the Hilton Phuket Arcadia, the 2010 event set a record in attendance and musical talent.

Next up was George Cordeiro and the Fai Jang Blues Gang, featuring guest artists on steel guitar and harmonica.

Tony Wilson and Rob Davies, showed up, as expected, with a whole new line of Groove Doctors and Friends. The band has changed presentation styles for the Festival every year, and this year was no exception. Three beautiful songbirds in front gave Tony a new vocal boost.

Next up were the Prodigal Sons dressed in leather ‘Blues Brothers’ jackets and ’60s jeans. They blasted off with the Stones’ version of ‘Not Fade Away’. The band then rocked through 45 minutes of fun, crazy stunts and very well played music, intermixed with moments of seriousness.

KNiKi, the lovely ‘vibracious’ lass from Perth, followed. She was a superb curtain-raiser for the legendary, Charlie Musselwhite and his awesome band. Charlie, who has recently been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, brought the Phuket International Blues Festival to a rousing climax. Playing in Thailand for the fi rst time, and exclusively in Phuket,

Charlie was the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd’s character in the mega-hit movie ‘The Blues Brothers’. At 66, he still has tremendous vocal power and plays with a tone and technique, which are the envy of more pedestrian harp players. His encore ‘Cristo Redentor’ was living proof … say no more.

He featured most of the songs from his latest album ‘Rough Dried’, which sold like hotcakes after the show. If you missed the great man, and you’re going to Europe shortly, he’ll be touring there this spring. See his full schedule at www.charliemusselwhite.com

The Festival is a charity event, and at 11 pm Friday Andy presented a cheque for 50,000 baht to Peter Hamilton, Vice Chairman of the ‘Phuket Has Been Good to Us’ foundation. Peter spoke briefl y about the great work which this foundation continues to do, educating less fortunate local children. The foundation was formed by the late Tom McNamara and focuses on quality English education.

Then again at 11 pm on the following evening, Andy presented a cheque for 50,000 baht to Woody Leonard, President of the Rotary Club of Patong, which was the Festival’s second benefi ciary this year. Woody gave a short speech on the great work the RC does helping local children, and supporting many other charitable projects on the island.

Hard to believe it, but another glorious Phuket International Blues Rock Festival has come and gone ...

Long before tourism became the mainstay of Phuket’s economy, the island had developed into a thriving community, based on another decidedly less attractive, if equally lucrative, activity – mining. In the latter 17th century, the burgeoning Industrial Revolution, in what was then the ‘developed world’, led to an explosion in the demand for tin. It was determined that Phuket had extensive deposits of ore, and that these were conveniently situated near the surface, accessible to what was then somewhat limited mining technology – not much more than picks and shovels. This had a profound impact on the island, where commercial activity hitherto, had been restricted to agriculture and sporadic, regional trading.

There were cultural impacts, too. The mining entrepreneurs found the local farmers and fi shermen did not take readily to the work of excavation of the ore so Chinese workers were brought from Hokkien province in China, where mining expertise was more advanced. Such was the scale of industrial activity, that the Chinese labourers settled here and brought their families to join them. Over time they intermarried with the indigenes, and Chinese animist thinking became fused with the local Buddhist cum Vedic belief system and enriched the island’s customs, religious architecture and festivals. It’s this multi-ethnic admix which has resulted in Phuket’s rich and exciting cultural inheritance, today.

Tin mining also left its mark on the landscape. The island is dotted with small lakes and ponds, which are the results of surface mining. These days, the government and private developers have joined hands to turn these stagnant pools into delightful features of the countryside, stocked with fi sh, surrounded by lawns, lush tropical gardens and expensive hotels and villas. Laguna is only the best known and most exclusive.

Now, for those of you who are interested in earlier aspects of the island’s history, a visit to the newly opened Mining Museum is well worthwhile. It’s located on the road which leads past Loch Palm Golf Club on the way to the British International School. Development of the project is still a work-in-progress, but it’s now open to the public. All the signage and information displays are in English and Thai, and there are helpful bilingual guides on hand to make visitors welcome.

The main building is constructed in the Sino-Portuguese style, with stucco-framed, shuttered windows, old style arches and a large interior courtyard, in a fashion which can still be found today in Phuket Town’s Chinese quarter. In the courtyard, you’ll fi nd an example of the old ‘Sorng Taeo’; a wood-framed passenger transport of former times. Motorised equivalents are still a common feature on the island, today.

Moving on you’ll encounter a fascinating replication of mining techniques, prevalent more than two hundred years ago.

Next is a gallery called the ‘Secret Pearl of Andaman’ which showcases stones, beads, jade, jewellery, combs made of buff alo horn, and even a ‘tin’ currency called ‘dibuk’ coins, all of which are the archeological and historical detritus of the old Kathu mining community.

The fi nal section is called the ‘Journey of Chinese Merchants’ and is built to replicate a Phuket street of yesteryear, full of delightful artifacts like ancient sewing machines, oriental pharmacies, strident, scarlet shrines and even a shadow-puppet theatre. The wax sculptures of Ba-Ba Hokkien Chinese/Thai traditional weddings, are bijoux masterpieces.

After a week of sun-worshiping, hedonistic self-indulgence and downright sloth, it’s time to re-charge the intellectual batteries. Back when the Chinese were digging out the tin, a tour of Europe’s museums was ‘de rigor’ for aristocratic adolescents. It’s a practise much in neglect, nowadays.

Why don’t you make a start with the Phuket Mining Museum? It’s its own reward. Don’t miss it.

Entrance fee: adults -100 baht; children - 20 baht; students - 10 baht. The museum is open on weekdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Tel: +66 (0)86 470 7767. Email: [email protected]

About Chef Matthew RubinChef Matthew Rubin was born and raised in San Francisco California, a city renowned for its progressive culinary diversity. Matt was at home in the kitchen from an early age. At nine years old he was cooking for his entire family and was a fi xture helping out in the kitchen at his neighbourhood Mexican restaurant.

While attending the University of California at Santa Cruz he apprenticed under a local artisan butcher, developing a wide knowledge of primary and secondary butchering, charcuterie and sausage making. After graduating cum laude with degrees in politics and sociology, he decided to move back to San Francisco enrolling in the School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts at CCSF.

After stops at innovative restaurants such as Incanto and Limon, Matt found a culinary home at Greens Restaurant in Fort Mason, where he worked for four years focusing on locally-sourced, seasonal foods, fresh from local farmers and producers.

In 2007 Matt and his girlfriend Zan decided to leave the US and travel to South East Asia. After exploring the region and its culinary cultures for a full year, they settled in Phuket. In 2008 Matt signed on as the Executive Chef for Coyote Mexican Restaurant and Margarita Bar in Patong. In May 2009 he helped open the Chicago Steakhouse where he is also Executive Chef. Matt loves utilising the fresh local products of Phuket and the challenge of executing regionally specifi c cuisines in Thailand.

Spice up the recipe with traditional Thai food and a menu of jazz music and there is a memorable occasion to savour the sights, sounds and tastes of Ratri Jazztaurant.

A medley of dishes served together and shared by all diners present is a well appreciated Thai custom. The Pla Kra Pong Nung Ma Now, steamed sea bass with spicy lemon sauce, Tom Kar Kai, hot and spicy chicken in coconut milk soup, and Yum Woon Sen Seafood, spicy glass noodle and seafood salad are Thai favourites, well-liked for their sometimes hot and spicy and sweet and sour spicing. Ratri also serves a superb Ped Krob Prik Tai Dum, or crispy duck fried in black pepper sauce, that complements the other dishes with a new fl avour and texture combination along with the Tod Mun Khao Pod or deep fried corn cake served with sweet chilli and plum sauce.

Relax to extraordinary sunsets and superb food in an outstanding setting. and the sweet sounds of spicy jazz.

What’s your call on Phuket as a place to live? Like most places, I suppose, there’s good and bad. Just stay away from the bits you don’t like. I’ve certainly done fantastic things in Phuket which I couldn’t have done anywhere else. There are some wonderful people living here, both expat and local.

It’s common to hear people complaining about over-development of the island. My answer to that would be to tell them to get out of their four-by-fours and experience the parks and forested hills, of which there are plenty. Then there are the beaches – the best stress reliever in the world, bar none.

Any particular hates? Tourists walking around in vest-tops and crocks.

How old are you? 34.

Are you married? Still single but working on it. I’d like to marry and have a family but it takes two to tango.

What do you do in your free time? Not that you seem to have much. Yes, life is pretty hectic, but that’s how I like it. Usually. I’ll hang out with friends, cook or just chill at home. Exercise is an important part of my lifestyle and I like to go running once or twice a day. Beaches are perfect for this.

If you had to describe yourself in a sentence, could you? Let’s see. Fun-loving and full of life; bit too sensitive.

Would your friends agree? Hopefully, they see me as a good person with a good heart – maybe they’ll throw in sexy and funny. A friend once told me that I was like a child in an adult’s body. Do you think it was a compliment?

Where are you from originally? I was born in Essex in Merry Old England. My hometown is Benfl eet, which is just outside Southend-on-Sea.

When did you move to Phuket? On March 27, 2007.

What did you do before coming here? I’d always wanted two things in life – to be a watersports instructor and to be famous. I got a job teaching kids on ‘activities’ summer holidays and I worked at this in UK, France, Turkey and Greece – some really fantastic locations. I wintered in Antigua doing the same. Then, for a few years in the winter, I worked as a chef for a ski resort in France. In 2000, I joined Sunsail (the world’s premier marine leisure company) as manager of one of their watersports clubs, with a staff of 45 and over 200 pieces of equipment. This was recognition if not fame, but after six years I realised that the job wasn’t going anywhere, so I decided to return to the UK. I stuck it for a year working for Tesco’s fi rst, then as a tree surgeon in a landscape gardening company and fi nally in a fi tness centre – part of the David Lloyd group.

So you decided to come to Phuket? Yes, I really wasn’t enjoying life in London, so when an old Sunsail manager off ered me a job here as Sales Manager for the Village Coconut Island project, I jumped at the chance.

You had no experience of real estate before. Did you fi nd any problems? There have been lots of problems like airports getting closed down and worldwide credit crunches, but there’s not much I could do about them. I’ve no staff so the biggest problem I face is managing myself. Sometimes that’s harder than it ought to be.

Do you enjoy the job? Great fun, you meet so many interesting people and I get a real buzz from helping someone to buy their dream house in paradise.

And the secret of your success? You’ve got to have a positive mental attitude but, as I say, the essential ingredient must be fun. If it stopped being fun, I’d stop doing it. One more thing: be punctual.

What’s your hobby? It’s more of a second job than a hobby. In the evenings and at weekends I love to volunteer my services as an MC or DJ, but also like to get paid. It’s great to see people enjoying themselves and it means I get to go to all sorts of events for free. Music has always been my great love and being in the limelight is part of what makes me tick – being famous, right? Also, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the ‘greats’ like Jose Padila and Judge Jules.

Talk a bit about your ideas of success, life, and what it all means. For me, success is about achieving one’s goals. I’ve had enormous satisfaction from teaching new skills to kids and adults and giving them a great holiday at the same time. Without getting too deep, life’s ‘an entertainment’ and the reward is to experience new things every day. I also like chocolate.

Where do you stay? I live in Surin and hang out there and in Bang Tao.

SONGKRAN in Phuket

Thais who have moved from their home towns always try to return to their families for Songkran and all forms of transport are booked solid. For this reason you should try to avoid travelling before, during or immediately after the holiday, particularly by bus or train.

In many towns and villages, a Buddha image is carried in a procession through the streets and people sprinkle water upon it, to show their respect. In the southern provinces, village elders are invited to the temple and young people splash water on their heads, signaling their blessings of health and long life. The elders respond by wishing the young, vigour, wealth and happiness. In another delightful custom, Thais visit their elderly relatives bringing them new clothes for the coming year.

Increasingly, urban Thais have come to celebrate the holiday in a frenzy of water-throwing. Nobody is immune. One of my fondest

Thailand's most celebrated festival is Songkran – the Thai new year. It starts on April 13 and lasts for between three and ten days, depending on where you’re resident. For most, it’s lots of fun and an excuse to cool off at what is usually the hottest time of the year. However, there’s a deeper signifi cance to Songkran which is rooted in our history and in our beliefs. Allow us to tell you about this. Perhaps it will enhance your enjoyment of the event.

The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit ‘Sangkranti’, which means ‘to move upwards’ or ‘to be about to change’. On the eve of the festival, Thais spring clean their homes, symbolically expelling any bad luck from the old year and prepare for good fortune in the new. Food and other contributions are off ered to the monks at the temple early on the morning of the 13th, after which there are ceremonial prayers. Water is also poured on the ground, or on the roots of an ancient tree, symbolising a blessing to ancestors.

Our advice is, ‘If you can’t beat them, join them.’ Don’t forget to put wallets, mobile 'phones, cigarettes, lighters etc in a plastic bag.

Phuket Bike Week is also held during Songkran Festival. Owners of big bikes will ride round the island in convoy on the 11th. There’s also a motorcycle exhibition at Jungceylon and a show at Loma Park. If you own a custom bike, have a tattoo and are beautiful (admittedly an unlikely combination), this could be a good time for you. Be there. There are contests for Best Tattoo, Best Bike, and ‘Miss Phuket Bike Week 2010’, will be chosen. For more information visit wwwphuketbikeweek.com.

memories of Songkran is of an immaculately uniformed policeman (they’re normally very much on their dignity) smiling good-naturedly as he paused to empty water from his highly polished boots. Unfortunately these high jinks can get out of hand. Motorised gangs equipped with high pressure water cannons, iced water and lots of enthusiasm, would get each other (and anybody else) wet, in running battles through the streets. Unfortunately, speeding traffi c, wet roads and alcoholic bravado make for a dangerous cocktail. In the recent past the holidays have been marred by tragic loss of life and injury. Inevitably the authorities have had to move in to safeguard people.

These days the holiday activities are closely monitored by police and mass water throwing on Phuket is generally confi ned to a single day (13 April), and to specifi c zones − in Phuket City at Saphan Hin and at Rawai Beach, Kata/Karon Beaches, Nai Yang Beach, Surin Beach and Patong Beach.

Songkran in Patong usually begins the evening before – April 12, when normal activities in the bars cease, and the world's biggest water carnival begins. If you’re staying in one of the tourist centres like Patong, there really is no way of avoiding a soaking, unless you stay in your hotel.

No visitor who has ever been here during the month of April can have avoided coming into contact with the enchanting, hilarious, and occasionally exasperating and downright dangerous watery explosion of public celebration which is Songkran.

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Finding a spa in Patong is easy. But if you want fi rst-class tropical treatments in a superb beachfront setting, your choice is very limited. Fortunately, the newly-opened Swasana Spa at Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa, provides the perfect answer. With two luxurious treatment rooms for couples, complete with private steam room and oversize twin Jacuzzi, one single treatment rooms and two beachfront Thai Massage rooms, Swasana Spa is unique in Patong – blending sublime treatments with a spectacular beachside location.

Whether you’re suff ering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start.

My journey began with a Herbal Steam treatment in the aromatic steam room. Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing power eases away aches and stress.

Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling smooth and silky.

Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called ‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous, fl owing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands

worked their magic on my body, I felt I had left all my worldly cares and tension behind.

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage with natural creams, this treatment cleansed and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles. With all my senses heightened, I detected the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough to eat, but alas just one of the natural ingredients in the creams my therapist was using. This one is a must for anyone thinking of having a ‘face lift’!

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

Using only natural products including therapeutic quality essential oils as the basis of the aromatherapy skincare products for most of the face and body treatments, skilled therapists create sensory journeys to rejuvenate and balance the senses.

The aim of the spa is to off er clients a new kind of spa experience, one that is truly holistic, tailor-made and designed to rejuvenate and energise and ultimately provide the knowledge, tools and support that is required to create a better quality of life for all. It is our mission to deliver spa experiences that are both unique and memorable, and very much beyond expectations.

The pyramid of six spheres used to identify Six Senses Spas, represents the philosophy that is fundamental to the human experience whereby the foundation spheres represent the three primary senses of sight, sound and touch. The second level balances upon this foundation by satisfying the more acute senses of taste and smell. The apex sphere symbolizes a sense of elation discovered only by balancing the fi rst fi ve - the unique experience of all senses elevated beyond expectations.

Six Senses has created a body temple incorporating the principles of feng shui using fi re and water, which delights beyond all expectations. The spa is open and spacious in design, utilising the beautiful outdoors for Asian style treatments and indoor treatment rooms for specialised and signature therapies. Couples treatment rooms with sunken Jacuzzis are available for mini day and day package getaways or a la carte treatments.

All guests participate in a health assessment prior to the fi rst treatment so that needs are identifi ed and maximised results are achieved. A great importance is placed on the relaxation element of the spa experience and guests may stay in the spa to enjoy the sauna and herbal steam or rest in grass roofed salas.

The Sense Spa endeavours to deliver experiences that are memorable and unique and and that exceed expectations. Discover a range of treatments to choose from and with advice from therapists, fi nd options of body and beauty care, mind and body balancing and juice and herbal remedies.

Airports Council International (ACI), the world referee of all things to do with aviation support services, regularly publishes a list of the best airports both worldwide, and regionally. Phuket Airport didn’t even make it onto any list, whilst Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok languishes in mediocrity, well down the fi eld. This casts serious doubts upon Thailand’s grandiose plans for becoming a regional aviation hub. Ominously, poor neighbour Hyderabad GMR Rajiv Ghandhi International Airport topped their category, which should be a wake-up call for our Airports Authority.

In a previous article we catalogued the considerable improvements in services and infrastructure which both the national facilities have achieved of late, and there is no doubt that these are substantial. However, the ACI listings are dominated by other Asian airports, our regional competitors.

First though let’s give credit, where credit is due. In 2007, it’s fi rst full year of operation, Suvarnabhumi was ranked at a miserable, but deserved, 48. The following year it made it to 38, and last year, 24. Steady progress. Let’s hope that the powers-that-be can sustain the momentum. Their own stated objective is to make it into the world top ten.

In the past year, Suvarnabhumi has replaced the un-upholstered, ugly, cold, uncomfortable grey metal seats that should never have found their way into a 21st-century international facility. However, there are still no free internet services at departure gates, and there are only a total of 9000 baggage trolleys, available for use by passengers. The shortage of trolleys has been a major complaint from day one – apparently large numbers were purloined – perhaps by local supermarkets.

The best airports in the world according to the ACI survey are, in descending order of excellence:

Incheon, in Seoul, South Korea• Singapore Changi Airport• Hong Kong International Airport• Beijing Capital International Airport• Hyderabad Rajiv Ghandi International Airport (RGIA).•

Hyderabad’s fi fth place (they also headed the ‘5 to 15 million passengers per year’ group) came as a particular surprise, because the sad fact is, that Indian airports have been a disgrace for many years. Until recently, even Delhi Airport barely registered on the scale of adequacy, never mind distinction. The last time I transited this airport, its ‘new’ terminal was a poorly built prefabricated structure, which was a pitiable gateway to what has become one of the world’s burgeoning economies. So the Hyderabad success story does show what can be achieved, with adequate fi nance, sound planning and management. Suvarnabhumi and Phuket please note.

In the ‘over 40 million passengers per year’ category, (this is the category applicable to Suvarnabhumi) this is how things stacked up. Hong Kong was fi rst followed by Beijing, Denver, Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston. In the ’25 to 40 million passengers per year’ category, Incheon was fi rst; then came Singapore, Tokyo Narita, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai Pudong. The Chinese airports, by the way, are monsters. I attended the opening of Beijing Capital International Airport three years ago. Its size and the overwhelming fl ow of humanity, unbelievable.

The latest ACI survey also shows that with determination an airport can be improved pretty quickly. Here’s a listing of airports which have managed to rise up through the rankings very rapidly: in Africa, Cairo; in Europe, Pont Delgada; in the Middle East, Abu Dhabi; in Latin America, Cancun and in North America, Cleveland.

So there’s hope for Phuket and Suvarnabhumi to continue to improve, but there’s no room for complacency. What is needed is consistent management, a dedication to customer service, robust policing of ancillary services and a strong dedication to achieve excellence.

There are many questions asked by curious aeroplane enthusiasts. In the months to come we’ll be trying to answer some of these. However, a word of warning, the answers can be chilling. If you’re presently sitting in a departure lounge you might be advised to turn to the next page, right now.

Question: “Can a standard Boeing 747 fl y upside down?”

The short answer is, “Yes, but probably not for very long.” And it’s all theoretical, as nobody’s ever tried it. 747s are massively engineered, and Boeing’s safety record over many years, attests to this. Quite apart from the practical considerations of what would happen to the animate and inanimate contents of the fuselage, it’s more a matter of aerodynamics, than structural integrity. Whether it’s a barrel roll or looping the loop, everything (and I use the word advisedly) would depend on the pilot’s ability to maintain suffi cient forward momentum during the manoeuvre. Failure to do this will result in the ‘fasten seatbelts’ signs coming on, followed by CWT – a harmless sounding abbreviation for ‘contact with terrain’.

Enjoy your fl ight.

When it comes to

the sky’s the limit. Let’s look at how Thailand fares in the overall aviation scheme of things.

Useful info

Explore the island: There are many companies who off er island tours and these are a convenient and inexpensive way of seeing more of your holiday destination. However, if you have the time why not rent a motorcycle or car, and do a little exploring on your own? Your hotel or tour guide will be able to give you a road map, but you can’t really get lost. This is an island so if you keep going you’ll eventually get back where you started! Follow the winding coast roads and discover isolated beaches which you can have all to yourself. Head inland and visit small farming communities where people still live in much the same way as they have for hundreds of years.

Please remember that you must wear a crash helmet on a motorcycle. For those of you who are visiting from Europe or the United States please also note that we drive on the left here!

Motorcycle rentals start at 150 baht per day and small jeeps are available from 900 baht per day. If you rent for a week or longer you’ll be able to negotiate a better rate. (See page 23 for details).

Snorkelling:Crystal clear waters, beautiful coral reefs and a prolifi c marine life; it’s an underwater paradise. Snorkelling can be done all-year-round, but the best time is between November and April, when there’s very little rain, and the sea is calm. Freedom Beach, Laem Sing Beach, Ao Sane Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, Paradise Beach and Tri Trang Beach all off er good snorkelling. Coral Island, Racha Island, Kai Island, Phi Phi Islands and the Similans, can each be visited in a day. For some you’ll need an early start, and a fast boat, that’ll set you back about 1,500 baht for the round trip.

Parasailing: Ever wish you could fl y like a bird, soaring and diving eff ortlessly with the wind in your face, and experience views of this beautiful island from a new and exciting perspective? Phuket now off ers you the chance to do exactly this. It’s called parasailing. The parasail is a specially designed parachute which you wear, and which is then towed behind a speedboat; suddenly you’re airborne and looking down on mere mortals.

There are several operators on Patong Beach, and prices start at 2,000 baht.

hospitals, or from their own clinics. Vachira Hospital also participates as a Social Security Fund hospital. This scheme is funded by deductions from employees’ wages. Foreigners are eligible.

Patong Hospital is located opposite the police station in Patong, with a busy emergency department. There is a high incidence of accident cases in the Patong area. The hospital does have limited services after hours, but at some times there may be no doctors available. Thalang Hospital, a 60-bed facility, is much smaller and generally treats less serious cases from the northern part of the island. More severe cases would be referred to Vachira Hospital. All of the public hospitals will charge foreigners for healthcare services, and whilst they are cheaper than the private hospital, they are not free.

There are three private hospitals, which generally cater to the vast majority of foreigners:

Mission Hospital is a not-for-profi t hospital and is part of the worldwide • Seventh-Day-Adventist church group. Some say it is the cheapest of the private hospitals. It is located on Thepkrasattri Road, near the Rajabhat Institute. It is the only other hospital on the island besides Vachira, which will accept Social Security Fund patients.

Phuket International Hospital, sometimes referred to as PIH or Siriroj • Hospital, is on the bypass road between Central Festival and Tesco. It has recently completed major renovations, opening its new out-patient and room development, in September 2007. This is a medium-sized acute care hospital which has all of the required diagnostic and support facilities, and is a very popular choice for foreigners.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket is also a popular choice, and is part of the • Bangkok Hospital Group which operates hospitals throughout Thailand. Located in Phuket Town, just down the road from Vachira Hospital, it has recently upgraded its facilities and opened a new out-patients’ building. It is considered the most expensive of the three private hospitals.

For simple ailments, you can choose to use one of the many clinics around Phuket, but you should be aware that these clinics may not have the full array of diagnostic equipment and laboratory services that are available to the larger hospitals. They also often have limited opening hours as the doctors may also work in the larger hospitals, during the day. Emergency cases, are not well handled at the clinics, and should be referred to one of the major private hospitals, or Vachira.

All healthcare facilities in Thailand are required by law to make a copy of your medical record available to you upon request, although some will charge you for doing so, especially if it is detailed and contains lots of information. By law, the healthcare facility must keep the original record for at least fi ve years, so if you do change facilities, you can take your medical history with you.

Health matters Health mattersWhere should I go for treatment?

The answer depends on several factors, plus a basic knowledge of what is available on the island. Friends and other longer term expats can always give opinions and recommendations, and their advice is usually accurate. If in doubt, shop and ask around.

For those who live and holiday here, having access to some of the best quality medical care in the country is often taken for granted. Whilst none of us want to get sick, it is a pleasant surprise when Phuket’s healthcare services are used, as they are usually effi cient, eff ective and often of a very high standard.

Essentially there are three public hospitals, three private hospitals, plus 110 clinics and over 200 private practices – a vast choice. If you do the math, you will fi nd that the ‘doctor to population’ ratio is well above the Thailand average. Add

this to the number of hospital beds, availability of nurses and other support services, and you will see that the island’s facilities are excellent.

Vachira Phuket Hospital, Patong Hospital and Thalang Hospital are all operated by the Thai Ministry of Public Health. As public facilities, they

are usually busy and waiting times for non-emergency cases can be long and the wards overcrowded. Some patients may end up sleeping in the corridors. Clients are usually Thai, however foreign patients do use their services, particularly those who do not have any insurance, or cannot aff ord private care. Vachira Hospital, the largest hospital on the island with over 500 beds is located in Phuket Town. Many specialists work from Vachira Hospital and also consult at other public and private hospitals around the island. That’s why you may see the same specialist treating patients in both the public hospitals and private

Where should I go for treatment? For many on the island, this important question will at some stage, need to be addressed. If we get sick, where should we go for treatment?
