country out in terms of ceramics and pottery,

and there are several exponents still dedicated

to the art form.

Black pottery is one of the most visually

arresting and unusual branches of this craft.

The production of black ceramics has been

a part of Lithuanian craftsmanship since the

Stone Age: a small funnel exhibited in a glass

case in the prehistory section of the national

museum in Vilnius dates from the Neolithic

age and proves how black pottery was known

and made then. In fact, even modern black

pottery still employs methods that were used

by ancient civilisations.

The black colour of the pottery is the result

of a smoking process. Moulded pieces of clay

are fred for up to 15 hours until the furnace

temperature reaches 970°C, at which point

pine logs are added and the resulting smoke

dyes the surface of the clay a grey-black colour.

Very little has changed in thousands of years,

and the entire process still takes almost 24

hours to complete.

In recent years, the craft has undergone

a renaissance, which is being embraced both

within Lithuania and further afeld: cult watch

brand Fossil created a black ceramic timepiece,

and a host of contemporary interiors labels have

Juodosios keramikos centras (black

ceramics centre), located in the centre

of Vilnius’s Old Town, is dedicated to

preserving this traditional craft. It was

established in 1995 and now runs a number

of courses and workshops as well as ofering

The richest deposits of amber are found

in the Baltic region, so it’s no surprise that

it has a special place in Lithuanian culture.

As Viktorija Sokolova, director of Lithuanian

amber experts UAB Amber, says, ‘Amber

has always been the symbol of Lithuania.

It represents health, happiness and the sun.’

That appreciation is evident in the

country’s capital Vilnius, which is something

of an amber jewellery box in itself. As

Sokolova explains, ‘The city’s Old Town

is a very popular place for amber shoppers.

Traditionally, from ancient times up to now,

Vilnius’s most famous stores is Gintraka; its

eight branches are flled with amber jewellery,

from necklaces to bracelets and brooches to

rings, alongside traditional Lithuanian amber

souvenirs, including beautiful embellished

homeware ranging from candlesticks to cutlery.

And while amber is valued throughout

the Baltic region, Sokolova believes that it’s

Lithuania with which it has a particularly

special kinship. ‘Amber has always been

considered a Lithuanian speciality, probably

because of the raw amber layers in the

Nowadays, however, it’s not just for

its beauty that amber is in demand; it’s

increasingly becoming the object of scientifc

and historical studies. For centuries it was

considered an efective means of warding of

evil spirits and was widely used as a remedy

against disease. As traditional folk medicine

fell out of favour, though, amber was valued

solely for decorative purposes, not just jewellery

but across a variety of homeware, gifts

In recent years, some of Lithuania’s leading

alternative therapists have looked again at

amber’s use as a healing substance, with ‘amber

therapy’ becoming one of the region’s most

popular treatments. When amber is heated

using infrared light, it releases amber acid and

a variety of microelements, including calcium,

zinc and magnesium; it is the benefts of these,

believed to help purify the skin and aid healing,

that has led to the rise in the number of spas

and health retreats ofering treatments such as

heliotherapy – derived from the Greek ‘helios’,

meaning ‘the sun’.

‘I was born in an area with a lot of green parks and forests, near the Nemunas river. Now I live in the city of Vilnius. I like the architecture and the atmosphere of the Old Town and, of course, the people who live there.

‘In Vilnius I like to do my shopping in the Old Town’s small shops. There are a lot of small bakeries, craft studios and

fashion boutiques. Aukso Avis * p.86 is my favourite for small things and jewellery. Moustache Boutique * p.84 sells a lot of pieces from my label, including my newest collections.

‘My favourite restaurants include Bistro

18, Zoe’s Bar & Grill * p.84, Stebuklai, La Bohème * p.86 and Vandens

Malūnas * p.86. I like all of them for the food, and some of them I love for the view. If you want to splash out and feel the Old Town spirit, it feels very special to celebrate at Stikliai * p.86 or the restaurant in Shakespeare Hotel * p.86.

‘The city of Vilnius is like a secret waiting to be explored. The best museum is the Nacionalinė dailės galerija

(national art gallery). However, I like to walk in the Old Town; the small streets make you feel special. If you climb up the hill to Gediminas tower, you can see almost all of central Vilnius.

‘I take my friends to visit Verkių parkas, just because it is a very quiet place. It’s almost in the city in a lovely landscape, and in spring it’s full of violets. I also take friends to Trakai to visit the castle and eat kibinai [traditional pastries flled with lamb and onion].

‘I can often be found in Rūta chocolate shop because there are a lot of sweet and delicious things to be discovered there.’

«Я выросла в очень зеленом районе, окруженном многочисленными парками, неподалеку от реки Нямунас. Сейчас я живу в Вильнюсе. Мне нравится архитектура и атмосфера Старого города и, конечно же, местные жители.

Я люблю пройтись по небольшим магазинчикам, расположенным в Старом городе Вильнюса. Там можно встретить уйму маленьких пекарен, студий ремесел и модных бутиков.
