Benjamin Yudin, Rabbi Andrew Markowitz, Associate Rabbi Shomrei Torah Shabbat Vaetchanan - Shabbat Nachamu 13 Av, 5777/ August 4 - 5, 2017 PACHIM KETANIM FROM RABBI YUDIN: In Honor of Parshat Vaetchanan and Shabbat Nachamu This Shabbat is known by the opening words of the Haftorah. Why however does the Navi Yeshayah (40:1) repeat the term Nachamu? The Medrash, Yalkut Yeshayah (445) teaches, we sinned doubly, we were pun- ished doubly, and hence will be comforted and consoled doubly. What might this mean? Rav Yaakov Neiman zt’’l suggests an insightful answer. The Jewish people have a double responsibility. Firstly, to serve Hashem by living by His Torah, and in addition as stated by Yeshaya (42:6) to serve as an Ohr La-Goyim as a light- beacon and example to the rest of the world. When Israel leads an exemplary life both man to G-d and man to man, this has a positive effect on mankind and elevates society. When we are honest and act benevolently, it is good for us and raises the barometer for all of society. We sinned doubly by not living up to the Torah stand- ards and by not positively influencing society. In the future we will have rectified both, hence a double consola- tion. NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS This week the children eagerly participated in Mitzvah Week. They learned about the importance of being kind to others and performing mitzvot. We played Hide and Seek and Hot Potato and we made sure to say "good job" when our friends were the winners. The children made picture frames with pictures of their best friends and made friendship bracelets on Friendship Day. Both bunks decorated tzedakah boxes to bring home and we wrote our very own siddur to use as well. Dr. Jason Lizzack visited with us this week to teach us about proper dental hygiene and taking care of our teeth. The children had so much fun taking turns brushing the teeth of Dr. Lizzack's "pet," Coconut the Crocodile. Taking care of our bodies is a mitz-vah too! We all enjoyed Music with Morah Karen who played her ukulele and the piano. We played "Red Light, Green Light", "Four Corners", and "Duck, Duck, Goose" during Sports with Michael. We ended the week with a special Shabbat Party and a visit from Rabbi Markowitz! Shabbat Sha-lom.

The Leah Sokoloff Nursery School is excited to welcome Esther Feil as our Educational Consultant.
