F r o m t h e R ab b i ’ s S t u d y

Dear Kehilat Shalom Friends, As we approach the year 5779, Keleigh and I want to extend our greetings to all the members of our Kehilat Shalom Family. Our Kehilah’s mot-to is “where friends become family” and we know that this is more than just a slogan. Technological change has made many Jewish resources more accessible than ever before but there still is no substitute for the hu-man connections which sustain us in times of sorrow and of joy. Having been an ordained rabbi now for 32 years, well more than half my life, I have come to learn that change within a synagogue is very difficult for people to deal with. And this is quite understandable -- the world around us, as I noted above, is changing at a dizzying pace. We find life impossi-ble without gadgets which didn’t even exist a few years ago. We look for a synagogue to be an anchor, a safe harbor of familiarity in a stormy ocean of change. Nevertheless, change is inevitable as we continue to adapt to the needs of our members and our changing de-mographics. For the most part, services for the High Holi-days will be familiar to you from recent years, but there will be some changes that we hope will make the experience even more meaningful. We’re always seeking ways to keep our services traditional yet contemporary and to broaden opportunities for study of Jewish texts. We also solicit and take into account your feedback. Hazzan Kim Komrad will continue to lead Sha-charit (morning services prior to the Torah reading) as well as Musaf (the “additional” service after the Torah reading) as she has done for the last few years. Since many of our members do not generally attend Musaf, this will give all of us an opportunity to hear more of her wonderful davenning. Services for the second day of Rosh Hashanah will have a study session in place of a formal sermon, while I will pre-sent a more formal sermon on the first day. On Yom Kippur, the Avodah Service late morning will have a somewhat dif-ferent format which integrates both study and prayer. In recent years, the Tashlich service at North Creek Lake on the first afternoon of Rosh Hashanah has taken on the char-acter of a “mini-reunion” as former members of our shul come to be with their friends in the congregation. Last year we decided to hold our afternoon service for the first day and the evening service for the second day at the lake as well, giving people more time to spend together and elimi-nating the need to “shlep” back to the synagogue. It was a great success and we will do it again this year, weather per-mitting. I am looking forward to sharing these holidays with you once again. Keleigh and I wish you only good things in the coming year. L’shalom,

Rabbi Charles L. Arian

Dear Kehilat Shalom Friends, Do Jews believe in Time Travel and Angels? Find out during Rosh Hashanah. This year will continue to challenge us to “CHANGE” by putting aside our differences and working together. Leadership is about listening, praising, caring, recognition, and leading by example. The #1 key to change is communication. On August 15, we held out first General Board Meeting. Thank you to Stu Rutchik for his Presidency as well as those board members who served and will continue to serve. Welcome Debbie Finch, Lauri Friedman, David Joseph, and Liat Katz as new Board Directors. A few highlights included a report by Marilyn Schneider that our deficit will be far less ($40K) this year and we will revise the 2018-2019 budget to re-flect this. The finance committee is working hard to analyze the financial impact of the options that we’re presented at the Congregational Meeting. Allen Katz is looking at ways to improve our web-site and will be starting an Administrative Committee that he is looking for volunteers to serve. Joe Lustig reported that everything is in place for us to have another great High Holiday experience this year. Bobbie Goldman reported that we have a few new/returning members and a new individual Patron Package for the Holidays. Facilities under the direction of Tom Loggie, is working on cleaning up the building, working to fix issues with the roof, and Bob Goldberg is working to secure another FEMA security grant and upgrading our guidelines. Bryan Levenson wears two hats. One as Fund-raising and Men’s Club President. His group is plan-ning a major event for the Spring. Specials include purchasing three memorial plaques for the price of one. Our overall board meeting minutes are always available by Janet Rutchik. Linda Loggie is putting out a Shofar for the Holidays. Lastly, Allen Katz will serve as our Parliamentari-an. We are looking for someone from the board to serve as the School Board Liaison, and someone to take over rentals. (Continued on Page 5)

Hello Kehilat Family. Do you remember our first article when we wrote about “The Little Engine That Could”? Well, in two short years, we actually can say we have become the “Little Engine THAT HAS DONE” in just this past year alone. I am proud to say that the creative ideas, multi-talents and hard work of the Events Committee members have brought you numerous and very SPECIAL FRIDAY NIGHT SHABBATS that have featured its infamous New York Style Egg Creams, Sassy Sangrias, Delightful Daiquiris, Celebratory Chili, Sumptuous Salads and a variety of wonderful snacks and deserts plus the added benefits of supporting Friday Night Services and bringing our Kehilat Family together in both rich and purposeful Gatherings. Bobbie Goldman and Debbie Finch have spearheaded this effort with the generous help of folks like Leah Laifsky Sue Lebowitz, Nazrine Sabi and Toby Friedberg. As if this was not a big enough undertaking, we brought you a taste of Hollywood with 5 Sunday Night MOVIE NIGHTS made possible due to the incredible generosity of Jeff Greenwald and Wendy Schneider Levinson, whose financial donations allowed us to purchase, for Kehilat, state-of-the art technology. In addition, thanks to Jeff Lerner, whose technology genius produced these events. films for five Sundays. The first was a Sunday afternoon test run featuring The Incredibles, which was attended by about 30 folks both young and “older” and a great time was had by all. The rest included “Pray for Faith” a delightful satire about religion, religious congregations, friendship and changing times that cause consternation and which make folks face the need to change with them. The next was “The Hundred-Foot Journey” which really taught many lessons about culture clashes, predjuce, building relationships, wonderful cuisine, and heartfelt friendships. The next was “Paper Clips” which featured a very powerful and poignant story of a very small town that never met a Jewish person and a courageous and ingenious faculty that undertook the teaching of the lessons of the Holocaust. Over forty people attended this film and there was not a dry eye in the room. The tears were not caused by seeing horrific photos of the massacres but rather of the incredible way that total strangers from all over the world came together to help this middle school of teenagers collect over 9 million paper clips to symbolize and remember the tragedy of those who were lost. The final film was “Skokie” another story that grew out of Holocaust issues but developed over the issue of “FREE SPEECH” and the pros and cons weighed against the sensibilities and humanity of survivors. By year’s end, at least 25 to 50 folks attended each showing. Equally wonderful were the catering genius of Bobbie Goldman and Debbie Finch for their design and delivery of movie-style refreshments. MOST OF ALL, through the many hours, donations from both Events Committee members and those who attended, ALL WAS DONE FOR FREE.

Welcome Back to Shul! Boy has time flown by! It’s almost 5779! Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are just around the corner. We hope you, your family and friends will be joining us again as we wel-come the New Year. As always, our services will be led by Rabbi Arian and Hazzan Kom-rad. What a wonderful duo! Rabbi Arian is in-telligent, learned, and remarkably articulate. Put all that together, and it means he’s smart, guaranteed to have some important wisdom to share, and worth listening to. We are also for-tunate to have Hazzan Kim Komrad and her absolutely beautiful voice, as she chants the traditional High Holiday prayers. She’s a treasure for sure! We’re so lucky! I’m sure you have noticed the Weekly an-nouncements about “Special Friday Nights”. We’re back and looking forward to some fun Friday evening Events and seeing our old and new friends. So, what’s Special Friday Night? It’s an at-tempt to encourage our fellow Members and possible New Members to come for Friday night services with a “special treat” before Kabbalah Shabbat and later, at a special Kiddush. So far, we’ve had treats like home-made Sangria, soup, chili, potato latkes, etc. Thank you, Events Committee, for coming up with such a great idea and thank you to everyone that has been lending a hand. Your friends and guests are welcome as well. Hope to see you August 31, 6:30pm in the Chapel for Frozen Daiquiris and Shirly Temple Dai-quiris, too. Want to sponsor a Special Friday Event? Just let us know. You sponsor, we do the work.

New Member Special Once again, we’re having our New Member Spe-cial, so if you know anyone who would like to join us at Kehilat Shalom, just give Bobbie a call or an email and she will do the rest. (301-674-7808 or [email protected]). Refer a New Member or a New Hebrew School student and enjoy a free Shabbat Dinner for your family from KS - - just another way we can say ”Thank You”. Happy New Year!

Development vice-President Bryan Levenson

As your new Vice-President of Fundraising, I wanted to take a few minutes to inform of some of the many ways that you can give back to your shul. I will speak more in-depth about this in a few weeks, but here is an overview of what I see as current ways in which you can help KS. Did you know that at some shuls, congregants make a donation after receiving an Aliyah? While it is not our practice or custom to expect or require that, it is a nice way to say thanks for the honor. These days it seems everybody is buying things through Amazon. If you use Amazon Smiles, when you make your purchase, you are helping out KS. I will have more details on this in the near future. You know those little lights in the sanctuary next to those Yartzheit plaques? They come free with the purchase of a plaque. Right now we are offering a special on those. You get 3 for $500 (lightbulbs included) if, and only if, you purchase before Rosh Hashannah. (not sure if you will see this before Rosh Hashannah. If it’s during or after, please disregard) Money tight? There are other ways to help KS if the money just isn’t in the budget right now. We can always use help setting up or cleaning up events. There are several things in the works which will be unveiled in the coming weeks, but as always, if you feel compelled to give for any reason in any amount, your donation not only is tax deductible but is also greatly appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to contact with any questions or ideas for giving.

L’shana Tova Tikatevu, I wish you all a happy, joyous and sweet new year.

Bryan Levenson Vice-President, Fundraising

There are many activities planned and being planned this year by Sisterhood, Men’s Club and Events Committees. Each of you have great ideas. Reach out to me anytime with those great ideas in person, email me to [email protected], or call me at 240-888-7485. The holidays are early this year. Their meaning is important to me and I am sure all of you. Teshuva means “RETURNING.” What does this mean to you? To me, it is a time when we can honestly confront our actions, feel pain for them, and resolve not to repeat them. We can’t undue the past, but we certainly will not repeat it. All we can do is look to our future with every one of us working together. L’Shanah Tovah Tikateiv V’tichateimu May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year Doug Baum President Kehilat Shalom

As if this was not enough, The Events Committee partnered with the Men’s Club to provide a Sunday Brunch, catered by Bobbie Goldman and Debbie Finch, and a guest speaker, noted scholar, Richard Linowes, who spoke about numerous creations and inventions of Israel that have not only advanced Israel economically but that helped mankind around the world. This event was attended by 40 people including folks from the community at large.

SO, WHAT IS NEXT for THIS LITTLE ENGINE??

Movie Nights will continue probably in November, December, January, February and March depending on scheduling and weather. Please watch for further information in the Weekly Announcements.

Special Friday Night Shabbats will also continue so watch for further information.

There has been an on-going effort to create a Kehilat Shalom Cookbook of a special nature and this effort will continue. The Events Committee will also be looking for at least one new major event

The Events Committee has not yet met for this New Year but will do so either just before or just after the High Holidays. It will meet once a month once it gets a meeting night. It will begin looking for other event ideas. If you are interested in joining the Committee, please contact Dee Jolles at 301-428-9740 or [email protected] To all who have served, a heartfelt thank you is sent your way. To those who have not been official members, but who have volunteered to help, the Events Committee is very grateful. To those who wish to help, you are most welcome.

La Shanah Tovah to all

Torah Fund Pin for 5779 (2018-2019)

Atid means “future” in Hebrew. As Women’s League for Conservative Judaism enters its second century, Torah Fund begins its 77th year, and the State of Israel enters its 71st year. We look forward with joy to our future together with you, our sisterhood mem-bers and supporters of Torah Fund.

When the classical rabbinic texts speak of the future using the word atid, it usually appears in the phrase “le’atid lavo,” which means “in the future to come.” By this, they mean either the day when the Messiah will come, or olam haba, the afterlife. Israelis, referring to this life, are known to say with optimism, “Yesh atid,” which means “there is a future!”

How do you envision your future? Your personal future, the future of your family, the future of your community, of the United States, Canada, and Israel? When you dream of a bright future, is it in the next world or this one? The seminaries of the Conserva-tive/Masorti movement, which we support through Torah Fund, are doing the great work that helps us navigate our future togeth-er, as one people. Our sisterhoods provide the social and educa-tional networks – the extended family – that help us go forward into our future, as Jewish women, with confidence.

The 5779 Torah Fund pin envelopes the Hebrew word for “future” (atid) with a stylized Magen David. It represents our wish for a distinctly Jewish future, for ourselves as individuals, for our families, and our communities.

Learning & Growing

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL/Youth

News

We have a lot of learning opportunities for our young people this year! Religious School:

The 2018-19 Religious School year starts on Sunday, September 16. We are trying very hard to grow our school and are offering various tuition incentives to enroll new students. If you know someone who lives in the area and is still looking for a Religious School for their kids in kindergarten through 7th grade, please put them in touch with Rabbi Arian. It is definitely not too late to register. Our unique program is very convenient because all mid-week Hebrew is taught online, eliminating the need to carpool.

High Holiday Services for Young People: Once again this year we will offer separate services for toddlers below 2nd grade and older kids from 2nd grade through Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The service for the youngest children will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 in the Chapel on the first morning of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur and will be lead by Laurie Friedman.Services for children from 3rd grade up will have a slightly different formula this year. At approximately 10:30 on the first morning of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur, the stu-dents will be invited forward for a brief discussion with the Rabbi. At 10:45 they will proceed to the Chapel for an age-appropriate service led by Jeff Seldin.

Kavod Society for Teens: The Kavod Society is an opportunity for our post Bar/Bat Mitzvah teens to study and discuss matters of interest with the Rabbi on an informal basis. The Kavod Society generally meets once a month on Sunday afternoon, either at Panera Bread or at the home of Rabbi and Keleigh Arian. There is no charge for participation. For more information, please contact the Rabbi. Past topics have included God, antisemitism in American society, an introduction to Islam, intermarriage, Jewish meditation, and Jewish perspectives on Social Justice. Students play an active role in determining the topics to be covered.

Junior Congregation: One Shabbat morning a month at 10:45, generally on a Shabbat when Hazzan Komrad is also present, our students and their parents meet with the Rabbi in the Chapel for Junior Congregation where they learn about the meaning of our prayers and rituals. The main service is restructured that morning with the Rabbi’s sermon coming at around 10:15 instead of after the Torah service, so that he can still give the sermon and also lead Junior Congregation.

Men’s Club News

Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life

Chevre, It has been my pleasure to lead the Men’s Club here at Kehilat Shalom this past year. We took our monthly brunch up a notch with a speaker series (we even partnered with the Events group for one of them), had pasta in the Sukkah, co-sponsored a Hannukah party with the Religious School and how can I forget the ubiquitous monthly Probabilities and Statistics night and everyone’s favorite Yellow Candle. But we can do more in the coming year like World Wide Wrap day (assuming the weather holds out), a Welcome Back event and a few other surprises along the way. If you are interested in helping out, or have any ideas for some worthwhile events, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Wish-ing you all the sweetness and joy that the coming year (5779) may bring and may you all be inscribed in the Book of Life and enjoy an easy fast.

Life & Learning

Rabbi Arian’s bi-weekly Bible class has spent the past three years looking at the weekly Haftarah, and our studies have added to our knowledge and appreciation of these readings which follow the Torah reading every Shabbat. Now we turn to a different type of study: the weekly Torah portion with Rashi’s commentary. Rashi (1040 - 1105) lived in Troyes, France and is considered the commentator par excellence in helping to explain the plain meaning of the text. His commentary is considered indispensable for students of all levels and his lead to over 300 “supercommentaries,” meaning commentaries on Rashi’s commentary itself. We will look at some selected verses along with Rashi’s commentary, and discover what question Rashi is trying to answer and what his understanding

adds to our knowledge of the text. The class will meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each calendar month right after evening minyan.

Adult Education Bible Class

New Class coming this fall: The Siddur

Were you always interested in learning more about the siddur but you were afraid to ask? Please come to a class led by Rabbi Arian where we will explore the structure and history of the siddur and the purpose of the prayers and blessing we say every Shabbat. The goal of this class is to provide us with the knowledge to make our Shabbat experience more meaningful. The class will be held every other Wednesday evening. We would love to see you at the class but if you would rather enjoy it from your own home, it will be available on interactive online. If you are interested please contact Linda Pesce at [email protected]. The start date will be available when the Rabbi’s fall schedule is confirmed.

Kiddush Konversations led by Rabbi Arian will take place once each month on our Simcha Shabbat. After Kiddush, we sit together, learn, share ideas and thoughts featuring intriguing dialogue on topics ranging from Halacha, to Israel, to current events.

Notices are always listed in the weekly announcements.
