“Earth Element”
Earth: Ground holding footwork; hand edge stop inside hook punch, palm to chin “Koyoku”
² Attacker swings a high right punch, shove, or grab up from your left side. ² Swing your left hand up and outward to stop the attacker’s low punch from the inside. ² Right palm heel strike to face or temple. ² Shift towards original punching arm and grab shoulders for knee strikes to abdomen. ² Eyes on attacker; push away and escape. Earth: “Yokuto” Ground holding; hand edge parry outside straight punch, palm to temple.
² Attacker throws a high right punch, grab, or shove straight towards your face or chest. ² Swing your left hand up and inward to stop the attacker’s punch from the outside. ² Right palm heel strike to temple to knock him away. ² Grab his shoulder and upper arm for knee strikes to hip or side of thigh. ² Eyes on attacker; push away and escape. Earth: Ground holding; Hand edge parry inside low grab/punch, palm to face.
² Attacker swings a low right punch, shove, or grab up from your left side. ² Swing your left hand down and outward to stop the attacker’s low punch from the inside. ² Right palm heel strike to face or temple. ² Grab shoulder and neck for knee strikes to chest or stomach. ² Eyes on attacker; push away and escape. Earth: Escape from two handed choke “Ryote Gake”
² Lever his arms apart with palm shoves from inside…or finger hooks from the outside ² Jab face with leading hand or swing kick to legs or body and back away. Earth: Stability forward facing same side grab defense (his left to your right) “Dan Shu”
² Recognize aggressor’s loose jerking left hand grab at your right wrist /upper arm ² Reach straight upwards to free your arm from his grip; reinforce with your free hand if needed
² Strike down with your elbow or hammer fist to his arm, collarbone, or bridge of the nose ² Swing knee kicks in to his thigh or groin. ² Eyes on attacker; push away and escape.

“Earth Element”
Earth: Wrist Grab Escapes “Te Hodoki 1”
² Bang his thumbs together when your hands are pulled close together, or… ² Forward head butt or kick when your hands are pulled wide apart ² Eyes on attacker; push away and escape. Earth: Defense against arm grab from the side “Te Hodoki 2” ² Throw arms up and backing circle, or flip grabbed elbow or back fist into attacker’s ribs/face. ² Stamp down on attacker’s shin and foot with your heel or foot edge. ² Turn in with uppercut to midsection. ² Swing elbow strikes to head. Earth: Stability forward facing cross side grab defense (his right to your right) “Te Hodoki 3”
² Recognize aggressor’s loose jerking right hand grab at your right wrist. ² Flex your knees and shove straight down to free your trapped wrist or straighten his grabbing arm. ² Hammer down on his forearm or hand to free your wrist. ² Swing toe or shin kicks or heel stamps to leg or torso. ² Eyes on attacker; push away and escape. Earth: Front waist –grasp “rodeo” tackle “Tai Hodoki 1”
² Aggressor crouches and charges in to tackle you around the waist. ² Flex your knees and jump back with his advance-‐keep your stability. ² Hammer down on his back and head with descending elbow strikes. ² Lift knees to face and push him away and escape. Earth: Rear shoulder grab (or choke) escape “Ketsu Miyaku”
² Aggressor grabs both of your shoulders or your upper arms from behind. ² Shift and flex your knees to regain your balance and look over shoulder to see if it is friend or foe. ² Stamp heel down on his shins or feet. ² Swing elbows forward and back. ² Throw head back with face strike. Earth: Rear collar grab “Yubi Kudaki”
² Turn in or out and visually verify that this is an aggressor. ² Swing back knuckle punches straight up to ribs. ² Knock grabbing hand away and escape with defense ready positioning.
Earth: Stabile lapel grab defense. “Ho Soku”
² Recognize loose jerking right hand grab of your jacket lapel. ² Flex your knees and raise right knee to the aggressor’s groin or thigh. ² Cover your face with your right forearm and hammer out to the right side of his head. ² Knock or pull his hand off and swing toe or shin kicks or heel stamps to leg or torso. ² Eyes on attacker; push away and escape with defense ready positioning.

“Water”-‐ Ichimonji no Kamae counterstriking to incoming punch
² From Ichimonji no Kamae, pull back to Ichimonji no Kamae when attacker punches/grabs ² Shift or step back with outward rolling counterstrike to attacker’s punching/shoving arm ² Rock in with cross punch/palm to face or throat ² Shift forward with leading hand punch or palm to the head or chest ² Resume guarded Ichimonji no Kamae in preparation to flee or continue to defend “Water” –Punch deflecting defense on ground-‐practice shadowboxing and with a partner
² From the floor on your back, aggressor between your knees throws a right punch to your face ² Shift hips right and face left, knock his punch away with outward roll of right arm ² Aggressor between your knees throws left punch to your face ² Shift hips left and face right, knock his punch away with outward roll of left arm ² Roll to your left and jam his left arm into face down elbow bar; pull out; kick away if needed

² Flex your knees and roll your arms overhead to duck under his attempt to grab your neck ² Straighten your knees to rise up with an uppercut punch or elbow strike to his ribs ² If he gets you in headlock, flex knees, grab his torso for stability, and punch to the groin ² Reach up over his back, use your hand edge to the bottom of his nose to force him back ² Grab the skin of his inner thigh and pull up on his leg to dump him on the ground

² Flex legs and drop to wide stance for stability ² He grabs under your arms-‐swing elbows back at his head so that he does not notice as you … ² Drive your elbows back into his arms and rock your head back with rear head-‐butt…or… ² He grabs over your arms-‐swing palm down to his groin and strike back with rear head-‐butt ² Lift non striking forearm to catch his arm from below, turn in towards the trapped arm, catch his hand,
step around and jam his wrist back in finger splitting Ura Gyaku twist to lock him up for a kick.

“Water” Defense against rear hammerlock
² When you feel him twist your right arm up behind you into a hammerlock… ² Step forward with your right (trapped arm side), pulling him with you if possible ² Hold your weight on your right leg and turn around to face your attacker ² Extend your left foot to position inside his left leg and swing your left fist up to his ribs to knock him back “Water” Defense strike & kick response to jacket grab
² Attacker grabs your jacket with his left hand and punches to your face with his right fist ² Pin his left hand and angle back and away with a left hammer fist strike to his face or right arm ² Kick his midsection, groin, or right thigh with a left stomp kick and knock his right leg back ² and/or…Kick behind his left thigh or knee with a right lateral shin kick to knock him down ² Pull him backward to the ground with his left hand or step back and knock the hand away
“Water”-‐ Ichimonji no Kamae inward counterstriking to incoming punch
² From Ichimonji no Kamae, pull back to Ichimonji no Kamae when attacker punches/grabs ² Shift or step back with inward rolling counterstrike to attacker’s punching/shoving arm ² Rock in with cross punch/palm to face or cross body elbow to arm ² Shift forward with leading hand strike to face or neck, or kick his body ² Resume guarded Ichimonji no Kamae in preparation to flee or continue to defend Thumb down twist wrist lock (Hon Gyaku) from throat or lapel grab, standing or on ground
² Shift back with left foot and push right shoulder forward as attacker grabs with his right hand ² Tug on his right hand with your right to interrupt his balance ² Step back with right foot and pull your right shoulder back; turn his hand “thumb down” to lock his wrist. ² (In place of “Hon gyaku” exercise above, youth students practice ducking under the grabbing arm and
levering the attacker’s thumb forward to facilitate escape) “Water” Defensive angling responses to incoming grab pressure
² Recognize attack as his hand clenches your wrist with a cross grab shove ² Pull your trapped hand side back and jab his eyes with your leading fingers ² If needed, push forward and step across at angle to free your hand ² Kick his exposed knee with heel stamp kick or kick up to body with toe stab kick ² Lock his arm or throw him from beside his arm

“Fire" Slip & slap hit outside leading, follow with jam & lift with punches
² Advance into attacking fighting posture (Kosei no Kamae) ² Slip outside attacker’s leading hand jab with cross outside slap ² Hit and push through with backhand strike to triceps as you move forward past his arm ² Jam his arm in place and cross punch with rear fist to triceps and finish as appropriate
Four directional kicking; front, side, back, and cross (shi ho Keri)
Throw a succession of kicks at targets positioned in front, at sides, and behind
“Fire” Interception of high punch
² Push forward into interceptive fighting posture (Jumonji no Kamae) ² Leading hand hit to lips, throat, or shoulder joint at the very moment he begins his attack ² Cross punch to center of chest ² Stamp kick or toe stab kick to midsection ² Resume Jumonji no Kamae, preparing to fight or escape
Forward takedown (Ganseki Otoshi)
² Attacker grabs you with a two handed push to the shoulders ² Reach under and lift his left shoulder as he continues forward ² Turn and face same direction as attacker, tripping him with your leg in front of his legs ² Twist and project forward to send him forward and down on his chest
“Fire” Response to big wind up swing hit; jam, hit his solar plexus, throw
1. Advance in Jumonji no Kamae 2. Charge into attacker’s right punch with left shuto hand edge to his forearm 3. Hit with cross punch down to his solar plexus 4. Shift across in front with head butt and take down Ganseki-‐Otoshi forward or Osoto Gake rear 5. Finish as appropriate and resume Jumonji no Kamae
“Fire” Ground defense against standing attacker (Ashi Maki Komi)
² Attacker moves in position to kick or drop down and grab or punch once you are on the ground ² From your back, hook his ankle with your ankle to hold his leg in place ² Kick or lever his leg with your other foot to take him to the ground ² Quickly roll to your feet to continue your defense
Fire Element “Stop Hit” – Use a lead hand strike or rear kick to disrupt the attacker’s rhythm.
“Fire” Interception of front kick; slip inside, punch knee, back knuckle face
² Advance in Kosei no Kamae ² Slip inside / outside attacker’s front kick ² Hit with leading hand punch to his knee you move forward past his foot ² Swing the same fist up with a backhand strike to his face and finish as appropriate

² Push forward into Jumonji no Kamae ² Strike down to the attacker’s rising forearm as he punches up ² Follow with your standing-‐fist lifting uppercut punch to the stomach ² Top of foot swing kick to the groin
“Fire” Defense from the ground against kneeling attacker
² Attacker kneels or crouches next to you on the ground in position to grab, punch, or choke you ² From position on your back, tuck your knees to your chest between his arms to shield your body ² Wedge your knees or bottoms of your feet against his chest and kick/push him back and away ² Quickly roll to your feet to continue your defense
“Fire” Interception of two handed lapel grab
² Recognize two handed jacket lapel pulling grab ² Slap both his ears at the same moment ² Pull his head in for a head butt to the face ² Swing lateral shin kick or knees to his thighs ² Turn to the rear to pull him to the ground with a twisting throw

² Attacker grabs you with a two hand pull ² Push his left shoulder back and pull his right shoulder/arm forward ² Step past him-‐your right side next to his-‐sweep with your right leg behind his right leg ² Step forward with your left foot to take him back and down to the ground

“Wind” Evasive strike defense inside heavy hook punch
² Rock into evasive fighting posture, deeply flexed knees and light on your feet (Hira no Kamae) ² Slip inside the attacker’s right hook punch with right happa ken open palm smack to his left ear. ² Swing left knee or round kick to his right thigh or torso under his right punching arm ² Catch his left arm and spin left away from his punching arm to pull him to the ground ² Resume (Hira no Kamae) in preparation to flee or continue to defend.
“Wind” Reach under elbow and flatten arm for rear shoulder lock (Muso Dori)
² Attacker grabs you by the arms or sleeves of your jacket ² Pull your right side back, straightening his left arm and disrupting his balance ² When he tries to pull you back into position, if your hand is on the outside of his arm… ² Step forward with your right foot and press your right palm against the back of his left elbow ² Push up, inward, and down to lock his arm out in a flat elbow bar
Defense against grounded attacker’s roll
² Attacker is on his back on the ground between your legs ² Attacker tries to roll to the side and catch your leg ² Shift sidestep with the attacker’s movement to keep him from catching up with your leg ² Wedge his body into Do-‐Jime “body strangle” shin leverage with one leg and kick with other heel
Elbow and shoulder lock-‐ (Oni Kudaki) against clubbing attack
² Omote Oni Kudaki Push down from above elbow while pushing up from beneath wrist and pull off balance
² Ura Oni Kudaki Pull down from beneath elbow while pushing up from beneath wrist and pull off balance
“Wind” Spinning rear direction elbow or hammer fist
² Attacker shoves forward. You may be facing him on your feet or face down on the ground ² Spin with his forward momentum to a position where your back is to his front ² As you spin, reach around behind yourself with elbow or bottom fist strikes to his face or head
“Wind” Evasive escape from grab of lowered hand
² Recognize immovable grab when attacker grabs your wrist from above (your palms face down) ² Put energy in hand and spread fingers to free hand ² Step behind and shove trapped hand towards attacker’s free hand (Palm up cross, palm down mirror ² Pull trapped hand back against grip to free hand ² Use effective footwork to force him to the ground

² Attacker straddles you with both knees on the ground, and chokes you with both hands ² Reach across with your left to hold his left in place, trap-‐wedging his right in place as well ² “Buck” up with your hips as you shove up and left with your right palm on his left elbow ² Roll left to throw him forwards onto his right shoulder, then quickly roll away to escape

² Aggressor grabs you by the arms or sleeves of your jacket. ² Pull your right side back, straightening his left arm and disrupting his balance. ² When he pulls you back into position, if your hand is on the inside… ² Step forward with your right foot and press your right palm against the inside of his left elbow. ² Push down, inward, and up to scoop his arm into a bent elbow lock.
“Wind” Defense against punching attack from position on back on the ground.

² Grab his collar with both hands ² Drive your thumb knuckles into the sides of his neck or thumb tips into base of neck at shoulders

² As he tackles you around your waist, flex your knees to stabilize his force ² Smack down on the back of his head and push his head back into the center of your body ² Jam forward with your body to fold his neck down and push his chin into his chest ² Pull up on his upper arms to increase the pressure ² Lift your knees up with strikes to his face and chest
“Void” Defense against “Full Nelson” rear shoulder lock
² Attacker reaches his arms up from beneath your arms ² Drop your elbows to trap his arms in mid-‐reach and flex your knees to stabilize your position ² If his hands catch above your neck clinch before you trap his arms… ² Cover his hands with yours, pull down on his arms to lock him in, and lean to the side ² Peel his hands off and lift his arms up and off your neck ² Back up and throw him forward
“Void” Triangle choke (Sankaku Jime) from behind – Standing or counter to ground roll-‐out escape
² From behind, or “scoop” as he flips over face down on ground, press forearm against front of throat… …or wedge forearm and biceps along neck arteries.
² Push the top of your head or shoulder into the back of his neck. ² Flex your knees and pull back to tighten the choke from behind.

“Void” (Ketsu Miyaku) Defense against rear chokes; catch elbow, drop, throw over shoulder.
² Aggressor rushes in with grab around your neck. ² Catch his elbow and create space for blood and air passage. ² Drop forward to kneeling position, pulling him forward with you. ² Hug his arm and project your trapped shoulder forward to throw him over onto his head. ² Pull back to stretch the attacker on the ground.
“Void” Around-‐waist tackle defense
² As he grabs around your waist with head at side of your waist, flex your knees to stabilize his force. ² Chop down on back of his neck several times with your hand edge. ² Wrap your forearm under his neck and hold his head in place with the inside of your upper arm. ² Pull up to force his chin towards his chest with a “guillotine” action. ² Lean back to intensify the fold, or bring your knee up to his face sharply several times.
“Void” “Cover, push up and twist” wrist fold from mirror-‐side back-‐of-‐hand grab (take-‐ori)
² Grab the backs of the aggressor’s hands with your palms, your right on his left, your left on his right. ² Crouch for leverage and tighten your grip around the tops of his wrists. ² Straighten your legs to push upwards, your hands palm-‐up against the tops of his hands pulled down.
