“It was a race pursued by four very different men on two different continents, and after eight years of daringly, crazily innovative research it came down to a breathless attempt to find the right donor and the right recipient at the right time. A few feverish days, hours and even minutes in late 1967 revealed the winner, and sparked a media frenzy that made him a household name around the world.”

The earliest story dates to 1683, during the Ottoman Turks siege of Vienna. Legend has it that a baker working late at night heard the Turks tunneling under the walls of the city and alerted the military. The military collapsed the tunnel in on the Turks and eliminated the threat, saving the city.

The baker baked a crescent shaped pastry in the shape of the Turk’s Islamic emblem, the crescent moon, so that when his fellow Austrians bit into the dish, they would be symbolically devouring the Turks.

In the Thomas Crown affair, Pierce Brosnan tries to steal paintings from an art museum where the security is reinforced by using Thermal Imaging cameras. Brosnan then places a suitcase under a bench which contains a heating apparatus which increases the room’s temperature to 90 degree Fahrenheit. This author got addicted to video games, primarily Super Mario Brothers thanks to his son. He would play the game for hours together and completed the game multiple times. In one book (X), one of the protagonists’ tasks is to rescue the talkative and tuneless princess Batcheat from Khattan-Shud, the Emperor of silence. There is also a moustached water genie, Iff, who uses a plumber’s wrench to turn on/off the faucet through which the Stream of Stories flow

In another book (Y), the protagonist has 999 lives to pass through several levels of increasing difficulty to reach his final destination. Each level is given a suitable “Video gaming title”. Each time the protagonist dies, it is represented by the term “BLLLAAARRRTT”

In the food industry chickens and shrimps are fed antibiotics so as to fatten them and make them larger quickly. A while back the Indian Government passed a rule whereby such animals which are fed antibiotics can only enter into the human food chain after a particular number of days.

For milk and eggs it was 7 days, for meat from poultry and mammals it was 28 days and for fish it was 500 degree days.

For what reason did the Indian Government pass this rule of having a time limit before allowing the meat to enter the food chain?

Page 63: Shiva's Informals

This is to prevent humans from becoming resistant to antibiotics.

The residue of the antibiotics tends to remain in the animals which is consumed by humans and thus making us resistant to it. This time limit ensures that the residues are not present in the animals before entering the human food chain.

Many banks in post-Renaissance Europe issued small, porcelain "borrower's tiles" to their creditworthy customers. Like credit cards, these tiles were imprinted with the owner's name, his credit limit, and the name of the bank. Each time the customer wanted to borrow money, he had to present the tile to the bank teller, who would compare the imprinted credit limit with how much the customer had already borrowed.

If the borrower were past the limit, the teller do something to the tile. This action is now used in everyday usage to describe the same scenario.

Page 65: Shiva's Informals

The tiles were broken and from this the term “Broke” came into existence

“When ________ and I turned up for the first day of shooting, he looked like a devotee and I looked like a shopkeeper, owning a stall outside a temple. We had an innocent look on our faces, with our hair neatly combed and sacred ash on our forehead. The director was stunned. It was then that he chided us. He said, 'You guys are playing thieves in this film. I don't need you to look this innocent. I need you to get your body language right.'

"So, both of us set out to look for thieves to learn their body language. We roamed for a couple of days before I finally found a guy called X Y . I roamed around with him for a few days to observe his actions and then returned to the sets to begin work on the project. We chose to retain his name for the character in the film.

"A few months later, I had the cops knocking on my door in connection with an investigation. They told my dad that I was into stealing mobiles. Apparently, Mr X Y , who, after having stolen a sovereign of gold and a few mobiles, had been caught by the cops. And at the station, during interrogation, he had named me as one of his friends."

"I had a tough time convincing my dad that I was not into stealing mobiles, thanks to Mr X Y. I don't know if he is in prison or outside, but I wish to dedicate this award to him.“
