Jesus was not a complicated

person. He came with one

purpose – to reveal the love

of God. Not the emotional,

sentimental love, although I

don’t think God finds Hallmark

commercials offensive. The

love of God is the love that

a parent has for a child. The

love that does not come and

go with situations or harsh

words or slip-ups. It is a love

that keeps on loving long after

the sentiment has faded. It

is the love that sees the big

picture in the life of the one

being loved. Corrections and

guidance, sometimes seemingly

harsh and intrusive, are the

gift of this love. It is a love

that hopes all things, believes

all things and wants all things

good for us. The love of God

will speak into our lives with

words of beauty and encour-

agement. The love of God will

say the happy things as well as

the hard things. And, because

of this love, because we have

been loved by this love, are

being loved by this love, we are

able to love. Because we know

that God’s love has our back,

our front, our inside and out,

we can live without fear. This

is the message of God spoken

throughout history. Love is

the life and breath of God lived

in Jesus Christ. And this love,

this hard as nails and soft as a

newborn love, this confront-

ing the religious phonies and

the cross of Calvary all the

while reaching out to touch

the untouchable and speak to

the outcast, is the identify-

ing mark of all those who

wear the name Christian – lit-

erally “Christ one”. What we

believe can be important. How

we behave can be impressive.

Jesus believed in God. Jesus

Youth NewsHigh SchoolAs many of you know, the old parsonage was converted into a Youth House for the high school to meet, talk, hang out and grow with each other. An Open House was held on Sunday, August 7th for members of the congregation to come and see all of the changes. If you didn't have a chance to attend the open house, ask a high school student or member of the youth ministry team to give you a tour some Sunday!

Middle SchoolNot to be outdone by the high school students, the middle school students have trans-formed the old youth office into an inviting space to meet for Sunday School and Youth Group.

FacebookThe PUMC Youth Group page on Facebook has been changed to a private group. If you would like to join, look for PUMC Youth Group and request to join. An administrator will approve your request and you will be able to view pictures, videos and updates regarding youth events and activities.

Indians GameA group of 21 middle school & high school youth and 9 adults attended the Indianapolis Indians game on Friday evening, August 5th. The group had a

great time talking, eating, oh and watching baseball and fire-works!

Kids v. Parents NightOn Sunday, August 14th we held a Back to School Night event featuring Kids versus Parents in Minute to Win It games. Both groups had a blast competing to complete tasks using simple household objects in 60 sec-onds or less. Check out the pic-tures and videos on the PUMC Youth Group Facebook page.

Youth NewsletterWe are planning to start a Youth Newsletter soon. We are look-ing for volunteers (youth and adults) who would be inter-ested in working on this pub-lication. If interested, please contact Debbie Morgan or Amy Hatton.

Volunteer OpportunitiesWe welcome anyone interested in volunteering for youth activi-ties to contact us for opportuni-ties (child protection training required). There are weekly opportunities, such as helping the leaders during Youth Group; occasional opportunities such as helping at specific events; and behind the scenes oppor-tunities, such as helping to plan special events. We encourage any adult who enjoys spending time with teens to get involved. We have some great kids in our groups and we would love to have more adults develop rela-tionships with them.

Upcoming Events

F The Sunday evening min-istry times are MS 5:30-7 p.m. and HS 7:30-9 p.m. with the middle school meeting at the church and the high school meeting at the Youth House.

F Labor Day Cook-Out: On Sunday, September 4th all youth will come together for a Labor Day cook-out from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Watch for more information on Facebook, the PUMC web-site, via e-mail and in the bulletin. Contact Mike or Marion Brooks if you would like to assist with this event.

F October 9th the high school youth will be having a bonfire at Bob and Pam Steele’s home

As a reminder, if you have a couch or chair or any other piece of furniture you would like to donate please contact the church office. We will determine whether or not we can use each piece, so please do not bring the items to the church.

Thank you to all who have already made furniture and mon-etary donations. Additionally, a large screen TV and Blu-Ray player for the Youth House were donated.

We are humbled by these dona-

tions, and extend our deepest gratitude to the donors!

We would like to thank the con-gregation for all of their sup-port during this time of transi-tion. If you ever have any ques-tions, please do not hesitate to contact Amy Hatton, who serves as the coordinator for the Youth Ministry Team, or any member of the team.

Children's Church Offering UpdateDuring the last several months, the children chose to allocate their Children's Church offer-ing to help the victims of the spring storms/tornados. Due to their generous giving, we were able to issue a donation to the Red Cross in the amount of $75. Great work kids! Through the end of the year, the children have chosen to split their offer-ing between Creating Hope in Haiti and Nothing But Nets. If you are not familiar with Nothing But Nets, $10 can buy a bed net to protect from mosquitos and ultimately malaria. You can learn more at www.nothingbutnets.net. Anyone interested in mak-ing a donation via the Children's Church offering can do so by not-ing "Children's Church offering" on the memo line of their check.

Confirmation Class Update Several members of the con-gregation have asked about the Confirmation class so we wanted to provide an update. We have eight students attending Confirmation—Madalyn Cloud, Riley Daugherty, Joshua Hatton, Molly Henley, Derek Renback, Lucas Rutherford, Emily Wagner and Taylor Yoder. We fin-ished the first six lesson unit of the new Credo curriculum, "Know Your Story" on May 22nd.

We held a Confirmation Retreat on

July 29th - 31st, and covered the six lessons of the second unit, "Confirm Your Faith." Friday evening, we met at Carmen Daugherty's home for pizza, dessert and lessons. Then we "pinked" the yards of sever-al members of the church (you may recall the pink flamingos used by the Youth many years ago as a fund raiser, we found them and decorated lawns). Ask one of the

Confirmands how they learned about the Wesleyan Quadrilateral by watching Carmen make baking powder biscuits (and then eating them as strawberry shortcakes)!

On Saturday we came together at the Youth House to complete our lessons, play games, and fellow-ship. Mike & Marion Brooks pro-vided breakfast for the group, Tom Kingseed & Maggie Lewellen pro-vided lunch for the group and stayed to help the kids in the first round of Bible Jeopardy, and Susie Garcia and Doris & Ernie Martin provided din-ner and dessert. Mid-day we went

to the Alabaugh's home for a short swim and the first half of our lesson on the Sacraments. We ended the night with the second round of Bible Jeopardy. The girls were in the lead going into Final Jeopardy by a score of $10,200 to $7,900, but the boys pulled an upset when they risked

$7,898 of their winnings and the girls missed one part of the four part question.

We rounded out the weekend with a visit to Robinson African Methodist Episcopal Church in

the Broad Ripple area. Several par-ents, siblings and even a grandparent joined us. It was a won-derful expe-rience.

We have a short break until we begin the final six les-son unit, "Live Your Commitment," on Sunday, September 11th. We will also be visiting Congregation Beth-El Zedeck (Jewish Synagogue) on Friday, September 9th. Our Confirmation journey will wrap up with a final party on Friday, October 28.

Confirmation Sunday will be held on Sunday, November 6th. We appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers for the Confirmands and leaders as we continue this journey.
