The Elizabeth Fry Society Hamilton Branch Engaging Women in the Sherman Hub Update

March 2015

Goal 2- Equal Access to Services Our Neighbours Need to Live a Healthy Life Action- Engage neighbours from across the neighborhood with a specific target plan for the women living in the North of the Sherman Hub

1) To offer a bi-weekly group to women 18 and over. This group would be developed by the women who attend. EFRY staff would offer leadership training and support to those neighbours who identify interest in leading the group. The goal is twofold to bring women together from the neighbourhood to engage struggles and celebrations that exist for women in the community and in our daily lives and to grow women leaders in the Sherman Hub so not only the group continues but so does their leadership gifts in the Sherman Hub.

2) Through our attendance in the North section of the Sherman Hub we intend to outreach to criminalized women, in particular women involved in sex work. This outreach can act as a social outlet for the women so they do not feel isolated, a source to connect to other services in the area, and a voice for women who live and/or work in the Sherman Hub and feel they are not seen as part of the community.

Outcomes December-February

- we continue to be connected with Mission Services - staff have continued a relationship with the staff at 541 Eatery and Exchange, the women attending the group were also introduced to this great resource and now gather there as part of community. - women participate in a by monthly group. The group averages 4 women per group - a new student from the Keith neighbourhood is taking a lead on designing and facilitating a group - women involved in street level sex work in this neighbourhood have engaged with staff and were offered information and /or support. Photovoice was a great success

Thank you for supporting the work we do in the Hub.

Sherman Hub CPTMeeting Format DiscussionRecommendation: That meeting agendas include a standing 30-minute period at the end of the meeting that can be used for small group work such as action team coordination, and individual networking, or if paired by a 5-10 minute presentation, used for group discussion of questions arising from that presentation.

Recommendation: That reports, including action team updates, be provided in writing and that action team updates be used principally to provide Q&A opportunities and to introduce questions for discussion during that meeting’s free discussion time.

Recommendation: That presentations from service providers and other groups include an identified ‘ask’ or question for response, or otherwise generally consist of a written submission with up to 5 minutes for Q&A.

Recommendation: That a working group be struck to prepare a ‘welcome kit’ for first-time participants, explaining the work of the Hub and Planning Team, introducing action teams, and explaining how the meetings run.

Recommendation: That, as the Sherman Hub Community Planning Team explores new venues for its meetings, priority be given to facilities that will allow alternative seating arrangements.

1. What are the purposes of the Planning Team meeting for you?- Formal: Hearing what’s happening with action teams, subcommittees, new ideas- Formal: Connection & voice to the city (government)- Informal: Getting together with great people- Create more opportunity for social interaction with other community members- Building relationships- Fostering community- Introduce new residents to action teams & plans- Inspire people to take & complete actions- Capacity building & growth is an outcome- Getting to know people/building relationships- Connecting with neighbours- Sharing Ideas/Creative Problem Solving- Finding Resources/Support Systems- Finding out about events- Have a good time- Encourage dialogue and communication

Page 13: SHERMAN HUB COMMUNITY PLANNING TEAM MINUTES€¦2/3/2015 · 2. Minutes of February 2nd Moved by Leslie Falzone and to accept the minutes as amended. Carried 3. Agenda of March 2nd

2. Is the Planning Team meeting achieving these purposes?- Yes – great event each month to invite people to- Good mix of task & relational- Good, efficient use of time focused on action updates- Seems like too much ‘planning for the planning’- Achieving- Mostly yes- YES! + NO!

YES

3. What in the meeting does not help achieve the purposes you identified?- Many people have other commitments first Monday of the Month.- Don’t assume your update is known by everybody–new folks need history of action teams;

start with a short history?- I miss space sometimes for ideas, brainstorming, envisioning- Not clear about action teams’ & action plans’ status- Too much structured/Too Formal- Rushed- Short on time- Theatre style seating is not inline with goals- Too many presentations

4. What could we do differently or add to help achieve the purposes you identified?- Need more conversation about our value of being resident-led- Would be good to see more visible minorities involved- Involve the Sherman Hub Newspaper more in SHCPT meetings- More than 1 break to facilitate relationship building- We need time to imagine new things- Working in dynamic exercises- We need action items- How can we decide what we want to investigate?- Reports as “Story”- Multiple ways of engagement: fun ways- Have a certain ‘theme’ for the month (e.g., transportation/youth)- Guest speakers/animators- More accessible space- More cohesion with past & present- Science fair model?

Page 14: SHERMAN HUB COMMUNITY PLANNING TEAM MINUTES€¦2/3/2015 · 2. Minutes of February 2nd Moved by Leslie Falzone and to accept the minutes as amended. Carried 3. Agenda of March 2nd

- At every 4th meeting, an “action team meeting” happens here instead of their regular meeting… and if you’re new, jump into one!

- Newcomer Package- Sit in circles- Presenters should provide written information in advance- Limit presentation time – 25 minutes is too long- More brainstorming sessions (coffee time–2 coffee breaks potentially)/discussions- Expanded drink selection- Updates from action team in agenda to save time- Utilizing paper for action team updates (long term)- Facilitate better discussion by having small groups- Seek more conducive, harmonious space- Stay focused on one speaker at a time

5. What is working great and helping achieve the purposes you identified?- Breaking into small groups/shared interaction- Having childcare- Name tags- Introductions at beginning of meeting- Action Team lead contact info on agenda- Social time- 1-minute updates for new/urgent items- Introductions, change format of different questions

6. If the meeting were structured to provide more time for participants to talk, arrange plans, etc. would this help achieve the purposes you identified?- Yes!!- YES!!!- More time would be great but perhaps it could happen at potluck- No–2.5 hours would be too long and discouraging [if additional]; perhaps 1 hour meeting + 1

hour social time?- More time to structure a single 1/2 hour on featured presentation
