New Shanghai Circus

by Linda Burlingame

The young performers in the New Shanghai Circus are truly amazing. Since they were very, very young they have been train-ing and practicing; and their expert performance displays their success. Amazing feats of con-tortion, flexibility and balance, “mystical music and magic” — I never know what fascinates me the most.

Nine or ten acrobats balanced on chairs, one on top of the other in a tall tower of precision! How about the it-looks-so-easy balancing of plates on spinning poles? Or the Rolling Cups balancing act? That

makes the pole climbing seem easy. Not! And just how many acrobats are bal-

anced on that one bicycle?

The cos-t u m e s and sets are gor-geous, dif-ferent for every act. Beautiful silks and b r i l l i a n t colors help make the show a feast for the eyes. The show is well staged and moves smoothly from

one astonishing segment to the next. Some production numbers fill the stage with cast members; others

like the aerial ballet feature i n d i v i d u a l acrobats. It’s all beautiful!

In 2009 Mr. Jian Lin, President of the Acrobats Assoc ia t ion t r a v e l e d from China to honor the New Shanghai Circus in B r a n s o n with recog-nition as an “International F o u n d a t i o n of Chinese

Cultural Entertainment.” The press event was reported on China’s National Television. The 1000-seat New Shanghai Theatre is located on

Hwy. 165 a few blocks south of Hwy. 76 near Stone Hill Winery, just south of the intersection of Green Mountain Drive and Hwy. 165. Flowers, plants and water-falls decorate the front. A three-legged bronze pot dominates the courtyard. From Xi’an, China, the Chinese name for it is “Ke Ding.”

There are more than 250 acro-batic troops in China and the acro-bats here in Branson have become very popular with visitors. Their acrobatics, magic, balancing — all of their fabulous feats, com-bined with beautiful sets and stag-ing, state-of-the-art lighting and sound, colorful costumes — cre-ate a show that entertains audi-ences of all ages! Don’t miss New Shanghai Circus featuring the Acrobats of China!

“a new world every day!”by Linda Burlingame You’ve heard it said, “He wakes up in a new world every day!” Meaning, you never know what to expect, things change … and you can count on fun. That’s the way I feel about the Jim Stafford show, it’s always new! As many times as I’ve seen it over 20 years, I enjoy it every time, always laugh and love watching audience reac-tion. Maybe that’s it, the audience makes the show different each time. Jim and Ann’s two children are still part of the show: that’s another change when you haven’t seen the show for a while. They’re growing up, still fun and even more talented. Shea and G.G. have been part of the show since they were babies. Sheaffer is now 17

(gasp!) and G.G. is 13. Jim’s show really is fun, and funny, whether it’s the music, the com-edy songs — Helpin’ Dixie Move is one of my favorites! — the black light number, 3-D adventure, or something as simple as “Roll Call.”

Practice makes perfect, playing the guitar or doing comedy. Jim practic-es both. He told me when he began doing comedy, he put up mirrors

all around the room and practiced in front of them. He perfected his expressions and timing: how long to pause between lines how long to maintain eye contact; is it a nod of the head or a body turn? A myriad of emotions and tiny motions make all

the differ-ence! Jim is in good company when it comes to hit songs. S p i d e r s a n d S n a k e s ( 1 9 7 4 ) sits in the top 50 of

Billboard’s Hot 100 Country Songs, along with the hits of Elvis, Glen Campbell, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Marty Robbins and other recording

artists. Jim is always working on some-thing new. Not too long ago I talked with him after a show and he played a new guitar piece he was working on. It’s a familiar George M. Cohen tune, but with new “licks,” new chords, a whole new sound. Then he took it apart for me. “This is a Merle Travis chord.” He strums; then, “this one I wrote.” It’s amazing to watch him up close, his fingers reach-ing for the intricate chords and changes. Jim will never stop practicing. I’ll never stop enjoying the show. I’m betting you won’t either!

Romano’s Macaroni Grill – Branson Landing

By Dirk Myers

When you arrive in Branson from the very start you will find so many new things to do and see; occasionally it is nice to find something that you know is con-sistently excellent to fall back on. I would recommend Romano’s Macaroni Grill located at the Branson Landing as a great place to find your center again and relax in something you know is won-derful every time.

When you walk through the doors at the Grill in Branson you will see that this will not be an ordinary

experience. The décor is modern and inviting and you will see stan-dard pieces of Macaroni Grill tradition to tie the theme all together. Mama Romano’s favor-ite flower, the Gladiola, adorns the restaurant. The Heart Stone will find it’s way into the building at each Macaroni Grill and in Branson that is located in a pillar as you walk in. Most importantly, there is a warm and friendly face there to greet you when you arrive.

You have to try the House Wines. Their Chianti is a smooth red table wine that will enhance any meal. They also have chilled White Zinfandel and Chardonnay for a crisp flavor that will dance over your palate. As

a l w a y s you can expect to see the h o n o r s y s t e m u s e d w i t h t h e i r H o u s e Wi n e s ; you trust t h e m w i t h y o u r f o o d and they trust you with the w i n e .

If those don’t suit your fancy Romano’s Macaroni Grill has a robust wine list to meet the most discriminating taste.

That’s Amore’

July/August 2010 Edition Page 7 The Shepherd of the Hills GazetteThe tradi-tion of the M a c a r o n i Grill would not be c o m p l e t e without the d e l i c i o u s I t a l i a n c u i s i n e . Dishes like the Penne Rustica, or Antonio’s B e e f Rigatoni are specialties of the house. Also, a rarely known fact is that Romano’s Macaroni Grill is the only restaurant certified to make handcrafted Neapolitan Pizza’s. Their Chefs are trained to make fresh, simple, and authentic Italian dishes. Don’t forget des-sert; the Lemon Passion is some-

thing you s h o u l d n ’ t miss.

One beauti-ful tradition that rings t h r o u g h R o m a n o ’s M a c a r o n i Grill is the s i n g i n g of beauti-ful Italian m u s i c . B i r t h d a y s and other

occasions are celebrated in song by one of the staff members for your pleasure. One never knows when someone might break into song right before you. Most weekends someone is most likely going to fill the restaurant with beautiful music. You never know where you will find

a show in Branson!

One of the best things about the Macaroni Grill at the Branson Landing is its view of Lake Taneycomo. You can sit at their outdoor bar, or have dinner on their covered patio. There is no better way to relax before going out into the Branson nightlife. They do take reservations for the patio as well as their Private Dining Room for those

special occasions.

When you come to Branson make sure you take an opportu-nity to bring those you love to the Macaroni Grill. You will be glad you took the time to visit. Walk in traffic is great, and for reservations call 417-334-6777.

Andy Williams …Paul Revere & the Raiders … The Comets and more!

by Linda Burlingame

Branson’s own Andy Williams (We love say-ing that!) has published his memoir, Moon River and Me. It’s a remarkable book. Andy recalls his early years in Iowa and the singing career his father created for

Andy and his brothers. Andy’s life has encompassed famous entertainers and public figures; you’ll love his intimate stories a b o u t f r i e n d s and fam-ily, told w i t h his cus-t o m a r y style and g r a c e . M o o n R i v e r and Me is a great souvenir or gift!

Andy’s 2009 book tour took him around the country and

overseas, included TV and radio interviews and a Homecoming Book Signing Party here at

his Moon River Grill one of my favorites! It’s popular with entertainers, “locals” and visi-tors. The bar area is decorated

with Andy’s Gold Records and fabulous photos from his television shows. The Grill is light and airy, its white walls adorned with fabulous art. Andy says, “I have been collecting pop art for the last few years. In the Grill I have two Jim Dines, a Donald Sheridan “Elvis for Andy”, a Basquiat, and the Warhol series of Flowers, Soup cans, and Marilyn’s.

During the dinner hour, enjoy “the musical stylings and dulcet tones” of Mike Cathcart at the piano. Mike is the son of Peggy Lennon and the late, great Dick Cathcart. Did I mention the delicious

Moon River Theatre

July/August 2010 Edition Page 9The Shepherd of the Hills Gazettefood?! The menu has excel-lent variety; many items are Andy’s mother’s recipes. There’s a nice selection of wines From Andy’s Moon River label.

If you don’t see Andy at the Grill, catch him this fall with the Andy Williams All Star Variety Show and later with The Andy Williams Christmas Show. (Nov. 1 – Dec.11. Call now for tick-ets!) May 27 - August 7 and again Sept. 2 – Dec. 11 Paul Revere and the Raiders and Bill Haley’s Original Comets present two hours of great rock ‘n’ roll. The Comets get the audience pumped up

the first half, and Paul and the Raiders rock the second half.

Rock Around the Clock! Comets’ Dick Richards has a seven-minute drum solo that is beautiful! Who knew drums could sound so good?! Joey D’Ambrosio makes his saxo-phone sing; I love his v e r s i o n of Louie P r i m a ’ s B u o n a Sera. Rock A r o u n d the Clock; S h a k e , Rattle & Roll; See

You Later Alligator; Crazy Man Crazy — unforgettable favorites! The Comets invent-ed rock ‘n’ roll in the 50’s.

Paul Revere & the Raiders songs are classics. Seeing them live is electrifying! I love Paul’s remarkable stories, too. Do you

know which hits he wrote? Do you know what Hostess Twinkies have to do with his show? Have you ever seen a grown man in tights drive a teeny tiny car adorned with Christmas lights? Dick Clark calls him “the madman of rock ‘n’ roll!” Louie, Louie; Indian Reservation; Steppin’ Out; Kicks Just Keep Getting’ Harder to Find, so many hits. Paul Revere & the Raiders have been together since 1958; some of the Raiders have been with him more than 30 years. The group had 25 consecutive hit singles. You’re gonna love the show! Kicks aren’t hard to find at Moon River!

at College of the Ozarks!by Linda Burlingame Dobyns Dining Room in The Keeter Center is great for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch; the Bakery is open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. The menu is wonderful, the food delicious! I’m partial to the savory vegetarian sandwich! The Aggie Burger, Hard Work U Burger, Tuscan Chicken Pasta, Signature Meatloaf … some-thing for every palate, including

scrumptious Ozarks favorites. The salads are marvelous, with flavor-ful dressing choices like balsamic herb, raspberry shallot, roasted red pepper — you get the idea! Every dish is excellent, prepared by one of the area’s top chefs and a staff that includes C of O students. Many ingredients are grown and produced at the College, including dairy prod-ucts, grain and this year, fresh pro-duce. Dine outside, enjoy the view! The Keeter Center has a fascinat-

ing history. It’s modeled after the

State of Maine Building from the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. That building was actually moved to the College of the Ozarks; read more at KeeterCenter.edu. The Keeter Center opened in 2004. Much of the con-struction was done by 250 College of the Ozarks students; 200 work there now. College of the Ozarks offers a lot to visitors as well as to its students. C

of O students pay no tuition but

work at one of more than 80 cam-pus areas to help defray their edu-cation costs. Students play a big part in every aspect of the College, including attractions visitors enjoy. The greenhouse and fabu-lous orchid collec-tion, Edwards Mill, Williams Memorial Chapel (wonderful example of new-Goth-ic architecture), fruit-

cake and jelly kitchens, tractor museum, the dairy — next time you’re in Branson, consider stay-ing at the Keeter Center; you’ll get milk from the dairy and homemade cookies at night! Rooms and suites are spacious, each with a fireplace, bal-cony, and each is uniquely decorated and furnished

in rustic elegance.

The Edwards Mill is operated by the students. Water from Lake

Honor powers the Mill. You can watch basket and blanket weav-

ing. Everything produced there is for sale at the Mill Gift Shop, unique gifts and souvenirs! Nearby are the greenhouses, home of the Clint McDade orchid collection, numbering more than 7000 plants! At the W. Alton Jones Dairy students milk 60 Holsteins. And you read about the incredible Ralph Foster Museum in our last issue. It’s all fun for the whole family, at College of the Ozarks! (Two miles south of Branson on Hwy. 65)

Prince of Magic!by Linda Burlingame

The Princess of Thailand crowned Kirby “Prince of Magic” and as befits a prince, Royal Bengal Tigers are part of Kirby’s marvelous, mag-ical show. There are also panthers, lions, sometimes a boa constrictor. (“Lions and tigers and … yikes!”)

Kirby presents elaborate, extravagant illusions as well as sleight of hand, close-up “magic.” My favorite? Hard to say. I love his Sands of the Nile, an illu-sion more than 3000 years old. Changing the color of sand … in water?! “Using water from the Nile … or, tonight, water from

Lake Taneycomo!” I was at the show with my granddaughter Courtney recently; it’s one of her favorites, too. And the HELICOPTER!! Kirby

created this illusion for an NBC special.

Cutting two girls in half always astonishes; but when they’re put back together wearing different outfits, well … all you can say is, “How’d he do that?!” Kirby has excellent stage pres-ence and presentation. His expression says, “Wait ‘til you see this!” He’s funny, t o o , when he w o r k s with a y o u n g -s t e r ( “k id” ) helping out on s t a g e .

Talking about m a g i c i a n s , Kirby mentions

Harry Houdini. Someone in the audience whoops and applauds. Kirby grins and says, “Clap all you want to, he’s not comin’ out … not at these prices!”

One of Kirby’s close-up illu-sions is tearing a newspaper into pieces and unfolding it again as one piece. (Don’t believe me. Go see for yourself!) The smaller illu-sions are no easier to “explain.” Switching bottles and glasses

Kirby VanBurch

July/August 2010 Edition Page 15The Shepherd of the Hills Gazettearound on a table — Kirby has so much fun with this one! Whether w o r k i n g with paper, bottles or helicopters, his skill is a s t o u n d -ing. (A long needle goes into the bal-loon but it doesn’t pop!?)

Kirby is an award-winning magician. He has been named International Magician of the Year, Best Illusionist in the World, and has received the Merlin Entertainer of the Year Award more than once — the “Oscar” for magicians!

Kirby’s assistant is tied up and

put into a bag, which is locked inside a trunk. Presto, don’t blink, because

now guess w h o ’ s h a n d -c u f f e d i n s i d e the bag l o c k e d inside the trunk?!The Big Cat Tour after the show is

fun, marvelous to see these beauti-ful creatures up close. They are very regal, yet can be as playful as a pet kitty cat. Just bulletproof glass separates you and the cats! Enjoy the entire experience at The Kirby VanBurch Show!

The B r a n s o n Zipline & C a n o p y T o u r s attraction combines, “ e c o l o g y and adven-

ture in a fun activity that is both exciting and safe for people of all ages,” says Emma Hamilton, GM of the new adventure. You can take flight in the Ozark Mountains only seven miles north of

Branson, at Wolfe Creek Preserve. The Ozarks Xplorer Canopy Tour is a 2-1/2 hour guided, interactive excursion. Guests will soar “through and above the trees, across numerous zip lines, platforms and walkways.” Historical, topographical and ecological information is included in the tour, in the unique Ozarks sto-rytelling tradition.

You might also enjoy (Take a deep breath.) the Blue Streak Fast Line — a one-stop “zip” from top to bottom! (Exhale now.) Branson Zipline uses a system developed in the jun-

gles of Costa Rica and is fun for all ages. (If you’re over 85, you will go on the Wolfe Creek

Branson Zipline & Canopy Tours Station Wall of Fame!)

How fun for paratroop veterans or pilots, for any-one who has ever wanted to experience a thrill like this! (Just think of the sto-ries you can tell when you get back home!)

(Author’s note: I am not yet writing in the first per-son about Branson Zipline & Canopy Tours or the Vigilante. Stay tuned.)

Fun for everyone!by Linda Burlingame

The Branson Auto Museum has become a really popular attraction because of its appeal to all ages. Remember when we had three auto-m a k e r s , each with just a few m o d e l s ? H a l f - m i l e down the road you could tell if it was a Ford or Chevy! There are many more “brands” today, and I wonder if anyone knows how many models there are?

Branson Auto Museum is on Hwy. 76, a mile west of Hwy. 65, in what’s known as The Engler Block. There are cars inside and out, and all together about 120 classic, rare, unusual, and celeb-rity automobiles (some for sale!). I recently attended a Chamber of Commerce event there. We had fun talking about how far back we could remember the cars, who had a car like this one

or that one. I think our young friends enjoyed the conversa-tion as much as the cars! I’ve been there when three generations of a family were talk-

ing about “That’s like Grandpa’s car,” “This is just like my first car!” Because some of the cars are

on consignment, your visit may be different each time. I made some notes as I went t h r o u g h o n c e . C o m e along … a beauti-ful 1954 Chevrolet C o r v e t t e Roadster, v r o o m , vroom! A 1948 Packard Super 8 Convertible Victoria, and for a change of pace, the 1969

Dodge Charger “General Lee” from Dukes of Hazard. Around

the corner was one of the most gorgeous cars I’ve ever seen: 1932 Ford High-Boy Roadster in Lapis Blue, what a fantastic color! Color was more fun back then, I think! There are

pickups, like the 1950 GMC 3/4 Ton Flatbed, original bed with replacement wood. There
